We saw an ad for this hotel along the road, so we decided to give it a try. It was excellent - very quiet and clean at 48 Euros a night. Parking was free and easy on the street in front of the hotel. The town itself is a gem with a pretty plaza where they were holding their weekly market and the estate of the Gran Duque of Alba (now a school). The gardens there were nice leading up to abandoned ruins. The most exciting thing in town were the many occupied black stork nests on their yearly migration from northern Africa. We saw them by the dozens. We had excellent tapas at a bar on the plaza. We wish we had stayed here longer and enjoyed the peace of the small town environment and mountains. Also, the drive here through the mountains from Plasencia was spectacular through orchards of blooming cherry trees. More

Piedrahita is a small market town on the edge of the Sierra de Gredos mountains, perfect for walking, paragliding and horse riding. The tourist office put me in touch with a local walking guide, Puri Almansa, who, as her rural house was full, suggested this hotel. The rooms are basic but very clean, and all ensuite. Very reasonably priced too. But the real bargain was the hotel restaurant - after tapas and drinks in the cosy bar, I went through to the charming rustic restaurant. The imaginative food (eg. starter of warm partridge salad) was served efficiently, and all I tried was perfectly cooked. The hotel doesn't serve breakfast, but there are many cafes nearby. More
