Schloss Zeilitzheim is a country estate in the Franconian wine country. The von Halem family undertook the arduous task of restoring the estate near Volkach to its original state: the result is a family-run hotel in the village of Zeilitzheim. Its rooms are ideal for relaxing stays. Additionally, the manor-like estate with its arcade courtyard and walls partly covered by climbing roses, gardens and festive halls are excellently suited for family festivities. A winery run by the estate's owner Alexander von Halem and his two friends Heiko Niedermeyer und Christian Werr compliment the offering with its white and red wines.

The road from Geroldshofen heads straight for Schloss Zeilitzheim, which is situated right in the town centre. This castle is the heart of the village: not too big, but generously build. The inside and the outside have been restored and kept up with much care and intelligence. Right in the courtyard is a lovely fountain sculpture created by the daughter of the lady of the castle. The garden is intimately formal and reminded me of British tea gardens. Once upstairs the exploration of banquet rooms starts, only to be surpassed by the pleasure of entering the given bedroom/apartment. I entered through a very high wooden door and glanced at a wooden table with chairs placed under a huge old chimney hood. A very generously spaced bathroom and a practical charming kitchen area make this room perfect. The wonderful breakfast buffet was a great start to explore the charming town of Volkach and walk up to the little church of Mary in the vineyard, where a very famous wood carving by Tilman Riemenschneider is displayed. Back at the castle, it was time for the wine tasting with Alexander von Halem. The wines are organic and are all very different. There is a wine for everybody: from the accessible Wolf jr (Bacchus grape) to the amazing Melusine to the special barrique aged Silvaner (Baron). As long as you order 12 bottles (which was not difficult to do) the shipping is free in Germany. I will definitely come again.

Schloss Zeilitzheim was welcoming, clean, very friendly and immediately made us feel at home. This family run "Schloss" offers a retreat from the daily chores providing a peaceful ambiance set within a historical building and an artistic flair spanning the decades and providing a unique individualistic flavour . Each bedroom is different and has its own name reflecting a person connected to Schloss Zeilitzheim. We used Schloss Zeilitzheim as a base for cycling and exploring the surrounding region.

This was my second visit and again the hospitality of the von Halem family was special. The family purchased the schloss in 1979 and undertook an extensive renovation doing much of the work themselves. The property includes a small formal garden. Zeilitzheim is a typical, old Franken village located between Wurzburg and Bamberg. It is centrally located for exploring other old Bavarian towns like Karlstadt, Volkach, and Prichsenstadt. The family also operates a Weingut, winery, with their own label. The rooms are good sized and furnished with period furniture. A very good buffet breakfast is included in the rate of 65 Euros single and 90 Euros double.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The owners made us feel as though we were welcome guests invited to stay in their home. We took an auto tour of Southern Germany, staying in hotel-castles. This was the first at which we stayed and the only one not remodeled in a fashion which diminished centuries old charm of the rooms.

I just loved it. The charm of this really old building is just overwhelming. The house has been renovated and equipped with old furniture in a most lovely way. White the location is "in the middle of nowhere", this very special location makes up for the extra mile. I would go there again, definitely.
