La Serrana is an idyllic hilltop farm just outside of Salento. The property requires you get a taxi from town, but those are so cheap and plentiful, don’t let that deter you! While it does have group dorm rooms, for about the same price you can stay in a private elevated tent, complete with very comfortable bed and other necessities and memorable views of the valley below. Do that! It was so beautiful we were inspired and got engaged on our balcony one morning as the sun was peaking up over the fields! A nice walk will take you to the Las Acacias Coffee Farm, which has a fun, educational, and personal tour. Breakfasts were very good, and while there isn’t a bar or restaurant per se, beer was quite available.

This hostel is a 15-20 minute walk from the Salento main square, so it's away from town but still close enough to walk for restaurants, groceries, etc. We were housed in Camelia's, a house that's down the road from the main hostel, so we didn't eat in the hostel restaurant or spend much time there except check-in / check-out, but that was fine with us. It wouldn't be great if you're hoping to meet people and socialize during your stay, however. Our room was a private room with "en suite" bathroom, but the bathroom was actually off the kitchen...not ideal. The shower was decent, though, and there was always hot water. There's a very friendly cat that lives in / near the house and lots of beautiful flowers around the property. It's a very peaceful place to relax and enjoy rural Colombia. Overall, the hostel doesn't seem to be run that smoothly (e.g., we accidentally locked the bathroom keys in the bathroom and they didn't have a back-up set of keys, they ordered a taxi to pick us up but it went to the wrong location, we had to remind them that we owed them payment for our stay, plus other examples), but it's fine for a couple of nights at the price they're asking.

Awesome hostel! The location is away from Salento center so it’s quiet, the view is more than amazing! The vibe is so relaxed... a place to relax, not to precisely have fun. The campfire was amazing. The bad thing is that they charge you for water, and water should never be sold. Kitchen is very basic, very slow to cook anything. Besides that, it’s a great place to stay. The location kills any possible bad experience. 9 out of 10 stars.

After reading the previous reviews I thought La Serrana was going to be a wonderful, relaxing retreat but our 4 day/3 night stay was anything but relaxing. We stayed in the separate building, Las Camelias, in the king sized room marketed to couples. If the smell of mold, no shower, lack of privacy, and nonstop barking dogs is your version of romantic then maybe this room is for you, but it fell short for us. Upon arrival, the room smelled like wet dog and mold, but when we went to open windows to air out the room we realized that the only window opened directly onto the main walkway which has all the building’s foot traffic. It’s a large window and looks directly into the room, offering zero privacy if opened. There is a large group of dogs that live on the property and they are constantly barking at anything that passes by the house. Totally doable during the day, but being woken up at 5 am to that was not pleasant. Our biggest issue with La Serrana came from the bathroom. We rented this room at a higher rate because it has a private, en suite toilet and shower. We noticed the toilet seat was broken and not attached, but that was fine because we were able to take a hot shower that evening. Unfortunately, that was our last shower for the remainder of our stay. The next day when we went to turn on the shower, the shower head broke completely off. We notified the front desk immediately (which is in a separate building 10 minutes away) and they said someone would be out the next day to fix it. The next morning we confirmed that the shower would be fixed while we were out and they said yes. After returning from a 7 hour hike and in desperate need of a shower, we realized no one had ever even come to look at the shower. We once again notified the front desk who said it was because no one had a key. How is there only 1 key (the one given to guests) for a room? And if this was truly the case, why didn’t any one ask us for it? In the end, no one came to look at the shower until we CHECKED OUT of La Serrana on our 4th day. Despite alerting the front desk and emailing the hotel, we went without a shower for the rest of our stay (3 days). At no point were we offered other accommodations or even the use of another bathroom so we could shower before our next flight. We even notified staff that we were going to remain on the property after check-out in hopes of them fixing it so we could shower, but they did nothing. I have tried following up with them via email several times asking for some sort of compensation, but no one has ever responded. Things happen, I get that, but the complete lack of attention or response from the La Serrana staff has been infuriating. Nothing about the property would warrant a stay there with all of these issues. Stay in town and save yourself a lot of aggravation.

Nice place! We pitched our tent and could use all the hostel's facilities. :) Beautiful and peaceful area and is a doable walking distance from Salento (like 15-20 minutes). Also, it is quite close to the coffee tours.
