I came back to kono koko after an amazing first time here back in August 2020. This time we stayed in the same sea villa and then moved to the incredible Isaraya water villas. Someone described them as the Maldives of Africa and they were right. From the minute we arrived to the moment we left we had a fantastic time. Service from all staff was impeccable and 24/7, especially from Paul. Food again was 10/10. 6 and 5 course breakfasts and dinners. Freshly cooked, tasty and refined dishes. Pool was clean, gardens kept well, the whole panoramic view of the place is picturesque. Last time we were here the resort was nearly empty as it was the height of the pandemic, this time it was nearly full but we had the same speedy, attentive service. The water villas are spectacular!!!! No more needs to be said on that! The beach which Kono Kono is on is unbelievebly beautiful, when the tide is in (twice in 24 hours) you can swim in the clear blue waters. When the tide is out of course there is seaweed seeing as it is a beach (a previous reviewer was angered by presence of seaweed in the ocean... !) Overall fantastic. If you want a dream holiday of luxury, peace, good food and picturesque views then look no further.

First, I emailed the hotel twice to arrange airport pickup and reserve a baby crib, to which I never received a reply. I had to call three times in order to book airport pick up and reserve a baby crib. The airport pick up was organized for the wrong airport and thus had to scramble to organize transport for me and my family (we are travelling with an 8 month-old baby). The reservations team called and argued saying we did not give the proper location. We had communicated via email and had properly mentioned the location to be picked up. Secondly, upon arriving in our room, we were very disappointed. The room looked nothing like the pictures and no baby crib was arranged in the room. Different low-end non-matching furniture with a stained sofa, no beach bag or designer toiletries as they say in the room description. Also no desk, no hair dryer, no highchair, no laptop-friendly workspace, HDTV, LCD TV – only one TV is in the room but never managed to get any channels. Minibar non-existent plus a dirty fridge. We requested the fridge to be cleaned only to realized it does not keep cold. We requested a new fridge but was told this was not possible. (My wife is pumping breastmilk for our son, how do you expect us to store his milk in the fridge.) The solution they gave was to keep the milk in their kitchen, so at night when baby is crying nonstop for milk, are we supposed to call the kitchen mid-night and expect them to run with the milk? The end result was a bucket of ice. How is this a solution for a 5 star hotel? The bidet is not operational and our furnished patio is also a far cry from the pictures. The pool and room was definitely not cleaned before our arrival. The rainfall showerhead lever is so difficult to put on that my wife can’t even pull it. Due to covid we wanted to limit our interactions with the restaurant so we booked this room with patio so we can enjoy room service. When we called room service we were told is was an extra USD $10 charge (our room is 100 feet from the restaurant). I don’t understand when you pay USD 675 a night you also need to pay for room service... Lastly, we also chose this hotel because we were assured that staff were wearing face masks and not one staff is. We were also advised we would be given free hand sanitizer upon our arrival, but of course, no hand sanitizer. The breakfast menu is always the same thing and we were given yogurt that expired last month. Also ensure to lock all your valuables as soon as you arrive. I have some money that disappeared and can only blame housekeeping (although I have no proof of course). Overall, satisfaction is a 2 out of 10. Good location, but it’s all they have going for themselves. Edit: Although the above is accurate, I must inform that the hotel’s general manager has met with me in order to address my concerns. The hotel’s general manager fully agrees much work is needed at this location to make it a 5 star resort as they advertise. They have addressed each of my concerns and made our stay better for the rest of the trip. Although my review above is somewhat negative, immediate action was taking from the general manager to look into the issues. Dealing with the hotel’s general manager was pleasant and their final approach to make our stay better was to our satisfaction.

We arrived from the airport just around dinner time. The hotel is located in Michamvi on the Eastern side of Zanzibar island. It was about an hour and 15 minutes gentle drive from the airport. We were welcomed by polite staff who offered us cold towels and a refreshing ginger drink. Shortly afterwards after check in we were all shown our respective rooms. On the first 2 nights I spent in what is called a garden room. It was very spacious and well furnished and I estimate approximately 100 + sqm if you include the balconies and private small pool. These are located away from the beach and surrounded by a natural forest. The beach is like a 6 minute walk from most of these rooms. I did notice though that there were a few also right next to the beach on the sand. The room was clean and well stocked with a mini bar with soft drinks but alcohol is available on request, toiletries, dressing gown and single use slippers. It also had a tv and hair dryer as well as a kettle and tea/coffee. I was pleasantly surprised on my 2nd night when I was woken up by a noisy cricket in the room and when I called reception at 2am the phone was answered promptly and bug spray delivered to my door. Meals are served a la carte by the pool area and was most impressed by a well balanced 5 course dinner menu consisting of starters and first courses before the main. The wine selection was good consisting of South African and European reds and whites. On the consecutive nights I stayed in the water villas. This of course was very luxurious and can only compare to the water villas of the Maldives. Views were amazing and the decor was top end. I noticed the rooms also had a bathtub as well as a shower and outdoor small pool. Extremely private and exclusive for those seeking high end accommodation away from everyone. The beds were of a very premium quality as well as the furniture and finishing materials. Guests of the water villas have their own private on the water dining area for all their meals. The beach area is very clean and noticed the hotel staff on my early morning jogs attending to this. All in all I would return to this hotel in the future.

This is definitely not a 5 star hotel. Overpriced and underdelivered. We cut our stay short, cause we were becoming more and more dissatisfied with the experience. The problems: 1. Incapable front office who makes promises they do not deliver on and then make inconsistent or deceitful excuses 2. Unapologetic and unwelcoming attitude from front office and manager 3. Most of the wines from the menu were missing 4. Basic foods that were brought out on a very limited breakfast menu, were missing on different mornings: bacon (!), avocado (!) 5. Breakfast quality was low (they water down the fresh juices) 6. Not properly functioning rooms: ACs work inconsistently (either too hot or too cold, sometimes the ACs just switched off during the night), sometimes no running water, TV not working, on one occasion they didn't clean our pool 7. Quality of the food from the ordering menu definitely not worth the prices that are some of the highest on the island 8. The staff doesn't know how to respond adequately to complaints - not trained enough Some examples: * It took them 6(!) days to fix the TV in our room. Each day (from day 1) the front office promised the TV would be fixed. On one day they said that the problem is the service provider and they need to renew their package; next day they said that the problem is the monkeys who are sitting on the satellite, the day after that they said again that its the service provider. Whatever the reason, they were incapable of solving it for 6 days, although promising on each day that it would be solved. * My baby got sick and the local doctors said that it is necessary to measure her temperature every day. Hotel's thermometer stopped working, but they promised to organise a new one and even confirmed that the thermometer is on the way and will be delivered during the evening. When I went to get the thermometer the next morning, the front office lady said that they couldn't get the thermometer, because Zanzibar had changed regulations and now you need a doctor's prescription to be able to buy a thermometer (although they had said that the thermometer was on the way the evening before). I called a local doctor to organise a prescription and he said that there is no such regulation - anybody can buy a thermometer from any pharmacy. I organised a thermometer myself, without the help from the hotel. * The public areas in the hotel - restaurant, reception area etc - are open air spaces, so there is no AC. However, the temperatures in Zanzibar can be quite high also in the evenings. As we were travelling with a baby, we asked the staff for a standing fan so we could enjoy the dinner together as a family without having to be worried that the baby gets too hot. The staff informed us that they do not have any standing fan and when we asked whether they could organise one, we were asked to speak with manager called Max. I addressed Max to speak about this request, however, he was defensive and unwelcoming from the moment I introduced myself, After my request he said that standing fan is not in the room description and they can't solve all the requests their guests have. I guess Max has never visited any 5-star hotels himself and doesn't know the kind of service he should provide. We never expected that organising this request would be free of extra charge, however Max never proposed any solution. When having dinner or breakfast in the restaurant, Max never greeted or welcomed any of his guests. * Nobody asked why we were checking out early. Nobody said sorry, that the TV is not working, that there is no bacon or avocado for breakfast (although its in the set menu) etc. Apology should be a common decency in any similar situation, but even more so in a 5 star hotel. * We had to order maintenance for the ACs in our rooms multiple times, as they were not working properly. Got a feedback from the maintenance, why the AC in the main bedroom was not working properly - filter was dirty. 5 star hotel hasn't changed its filters. Wow.. * Front office doesn't answer the phone on the evenings. On some occasions they also just hang up on you. Not to end on a negative note, the hotel also has some pluses: 1) It is located in beautiful mangrove forest. Buzzing nature is all around you - monkeys, bats, birds etc. 2) The garden villas are tastefully decorated. 3) Restaurant staff and cleaning staff are very welcoming. I want to compliment one of the cleaning ladies, called Rehema, and a bartender, who was very kind. 5) Big pool with a view. 6) Great beach that you can enjoy quite privately without any disturbance from beach boys.

Dear guest Thank you for your opinion. We are deeply sorry if the hotel did not meet with all your expectations, however We would like to add some information to your experience: The Front office has tried in every way to satisfy you, but without any result. Our staff is always attentive to the requests of our customers, and in the event that something was requested was at that time not available, we apologized always trying to find a solution to your discontent. Our restaurant meets all the necessary requirements of a 5 star, with intercontinental breakfasts, with a choice of fresh juices and we are sorry if it was not to your liking, sometimes it may happen that something may be missing but you have been put in the condition to choose to find a solution but this was not taken into consideration for you. Your will was to leave our resort. In reference to the rooms, we apologize if you have had problems with the TV, unfortunately as you have seen the hotel enjoys a wonderful location in the middle of the forest however it may happen that the monkeys move the antennas but by calling the maintenance everything can be restored , as well as the swimming pool. All the staff are properly trained and polite and we are sorry to hear that you have found all these misunderstandings. We are desolated for not being prompt in your requests, we have certainly done everything possible. At your request for the thermometer, unfortunately, the one in our possession was not available at the time as it was out of order. We proposed to take a new one but your needs were far from our possibilities of the moment. As for the outdoor spaces, Konokono is in a wonderful location and it is true that there are no indoor places with air conditioning, but it is also true that it is not mentioned by any post that there are common areas with air conditioning. Our customers appreciate it and we have never had any complaints for this reason, and it is for this very reason that we do not have fans, as we have ACs. Our air conditionings are perfectly functioning and the temperature can easily be adjusted from the remote. However we are very sorry that your child has had a fever and we regret not having fulfilled what was requested. In any case we understand that the stay was not what you had thought and that unfortunately the episodes have followed one another until your stay has disappointed and for this we offer our sincere apologies and we hope to have you again among us hoping we can change your opinion.
