Quaint Maya style rooms, complete with private entrance, bathrooms, refrigerator ,coffe maker bottled water, toiletries, safety boxes, Wi Fi in all rooms ,clean, comfortable and secure, set in peaceful surroundings. Rooms are adorned with my own paintings. Beautiful gardens with labyrinth. Area for Yoga, Tai chi etc. Mini Spa.Swimming pool Excellent restaurant where you can taste some of the Yucatan cuisine. Located close to the village where you can experience Maya life as it really is.The bar awaits you for the best cocktails/margaritas in the area, as well as wine and beer. You have the luxury of Wi fi in all areas including your rooms .An artisan shop where you can buy items including locally made hammocks and snack shop if you want a small snack in-between meals. All the staff are local people from Santa Elena and all structures were build by local people too, including wood work, iron work etc I maybe a foreign owner but how good that work has been created for the local people who would otherwise not have an income.

I didn’t realize that kids weren’t allowed (thought something was wrong with booking.com when it only let me enter 2 adults for a 4-5 person room). But the owner was gracious in letting us stay. It was absolutely wonderful. She was so kind and generous. The food was absolutely delicious. We also loved hearing the birds sing in the morning. But! Take deet spray with you (actually throughout the Yucatán!). Muchas gracias!

We were on a car trip with Mexican friends We were getting away from the Quintana Roo sites to the Yucatan area we had not seen.. They choose the Pickled Onion, saying it looked interesting. We had traveled from a fancy hotel in Merida to Santa Elena. The Mayan-style dwellings/cabins were great, with hot water, A/C, and a great level of comforts away from a big city. The pool was great, we had a happy hour there, and the grounds were meticulously maintained. This area is in tropical Yucatan, but features grounds that made it a high-end property right up against the natural growth. This is Ms. Pickles life, and her soul is poured out here. We were at the pool, and had a happy hour there. We sadly did not get to eat at the restaurant as we went to the night show at Uxmal. We had a restful night in our cabin, and did greatly enjoy our included breakfast the next morning in a beautiful outdoor area. The meal was served to us on individual plates, with both hot and cold items. The hot items were indeed hot and the cold were cold. Very enjoyable. We talked to Ms. Pickles, and despite her modesty, she is the leader of charity and business in Santa Elena. A wonderful person with a wonderful establishment.

My husband and I have been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula since 2002 but this was the first time we stayed at The Pickled Onion which is near one of the large Mayan Ruins of Uxmal. The little cottages are simply furnished and decorated with beautiful local textiles and handicrafts. The room and bathroom are very clean. Even the public restroom near the kitchen is spotless. We ate dinner at the Pickled Onion restaurant and is was the most delicious meal we had had on our 8 day trip. Breakfast the next morning was fresh and tasty. The menu has foods prepared with regional recipes , all very yummy! The pool is sparkling clean and refreshingly cool after a long , hot day of travel. Especially fun was meeting the owner , Valarie, who is interesting to talk to and has a wealth of information on the places to visit nearby. Her impressive and delightful story is in an information notebook in the guest room. When we return in a year we will definitely stay at the Pickled Onion for several days and explore the local caves, pottery village ( called Ticul) , and other places Valerie mentions in her informative notebook. She clearly loves the area and its people and helps support the local economy in an eco friendly way.

We loved our stay here. The proximity to Uxmal and Ruta de Puuc ensured we had a day trip everyday. Breakfast was included and it was excellent. Valerie and her staff also offer lunch to go! Attention to detail is always present. Valerie offers suggestions and has a wealth of information, including off the grid temples where one can savor the Mayan vibe without crowds.

If you're looking for a nice and quite place near Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc this is the place to be. Comfortable airco huts in a beautiful garden and a very good restaurant. (Try the pollo pibil, it's excellent). Breakfast was one of the best we had so far in Mexico.

On the plus side: Lovely rooms, comfortable and great value, with charming pool and garden. Loved the hammock in the room and the fridge was very useful. Not fussed about air con so didn't use that, but I imagine many appreciate it. The shower was at a dribble so we had to wash with a cup and tap. But we didn't mind too much - pressure wasn't great at any place we stayed. Most dishes in the restaurant were delicious - guacamole & flautas (or sopes?) in particular; a couple of things were just average (a dry chicken breast...). On the downside: We weren't wowed by the atmosphere. Somehow it didn't feel very relaxed. Communication style felt defensive - as if guests are fundamentally a bit of a nuisance. My son splashed in the pool when he thought he saw a snake and someone appeared immediately to tell us (politely) not to splash. Fair enough, those are the rules - but it was raining so the patio was already wet and we were the only guests there. When we wanted a snack the restaurant was open, but coming from the pool & wrapped in towels we weren't suitably dressed to sit there. We said we'd go change; the waiter suggested he could serve us by the pool but only so long as we were alone as he didn't want other guests to see and ask for the same. All in all, this wasn't the kind of laid back little place you can happily hang around in, of the sort we experienced elsewhere on our trip (owner's comments on here about "inconsiderate tourists" wanting to stay too long in the restaurant and play games give an idea of the tone). But it is charming, very comfortable and well located and I'd definitely recommend.

Thank you for your review and we are happy that on the whole you enjoyed your stay with us apart from some discomfort at our hotel policies . The sign over the pool ( which many say it too big but easy to read) stating rules and regulations and one was no jumping or splashing .These rules are made for a reason as are all rules and regulations .You were actually quit fortunate that the waiter served you by the pool as the Covid restriction were still in place and we were not allowed to serve food by the pool . The health dept can come by anytime and if they see we are not sticking to the rules and regulations they can easily shut us down . Any restaurant guest that stay beyond an extended time and wish to play cards are inconsiderate to other people that may want to enter our restaurant and eat also . Not only that it can be considered gambling and we do not have a gambling licience and again if we get a visit from the health dept we could be shut down . So you see there are reasons why we ask people not do certain things .Surprising to many tourists who still think Mexico is an easy , anything goes place it is changing drastically and quickly. I would suggest to anyone coming for a visit that one should check all information online to see future changes that are developing daily Thank you Valerie

We had a nice stay here for one night on our visit to Uxmal. The property is super cute with thatch roof cabins and jungle gardens. We had dinner at the restaurant, and it was delicious (if a little expensive for the area). Valerie was very accommodating to our request for vegan food. The room also comes with a very nice breakfast. Our cabin was nice, although did not have hot water. Just remember to close the screen door as well as the regular door or you will have all the bugs of the jungle in your room.

Thank you for your kind comments …I always smile to myself when people say our prices are high for the area ..as I live here believe me I have visited all restaurants in the area and we are comparable and much lower price than Uxmal . Sorry you did not have hot water ..someone had switched the break off in the your bathroom . If you had mentioned it we could indeed have rectified that situation easily . But we are happy you enjoyed your stay with us and you got to see Mother Nature in her glory with the jungle visitors . Take care and always travel well Valerie

We really enjoyed our stay at The Pickled Onion. The owner Valerie made us feel welcomed and we were impressed by what she has accomplished since moving to Mexico 14 years ago. Our spacious accommodation was lovely with a king size bed and tastefully decorated with Mayan art work. We appreciated the air conditioning, the free wifi and the small refrigerator. The breakfast was served outside on the patio. It was delicious and plentiful. The restaurant menu offered a good selection of Yucatecan cuisine. Everything we ordered was flavorful and appetizing. The property and pool area was very well maintained. I would recommend this BnB to anyone who would enjoy a romantic getaway.

We have spent three nights in this incredible place. The lodge we have stayed in was beautifully decorated, very comfortable and spacious. The surrounding gardens have all kinds of flowering plants, exotic trees with little paths leading up to the pool, fitness, breakfast and restaurant area. The restaurant is of outstanding quality with great staff. We were really sad to leave but we will come back!

When we travel through this part of the Yucatan, we stay at the Flycatcher Inn almost across the road from the PO, however, we usually eat at the PO because the food is good and interesting. Recently, however, we ate at the PO and my wife and I both became ill. Any business can have an occasional stumble, but even one food related illness is too much.

Dear Allyn Sorry you were ill whilst visiting this area .... but have to say it definately was not the food from here .. It takes two to three days for e colgi to take a hold so you have to think where you ate in the last two to three days before coming here ... We are regularly checked with the health dept who take away our food and have it analyized and for 10 years there has never been any issue Also when one thinks that we have literally had between 100-125 people per day during the holiday season and this is the only one bad comment ! Really makes one think and know that you did not get your infection from here . Regards Valerie
