A unique Eco-Boutique Bed and Breakfast located close to Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil and Labnah. Quaint Maya style rooms, complete with private entrance, bathrooms, refrigerator ,coffe maker bottled water, toiletries, safety boxes, Wi Fi in all rooms ,clean, comfortable and secure, set in peaceful surroundings. Rooms are adorned with my own paintings. Beautiful gardens with labyrinth. Area for Yoga, Tai chi etc. Mini Spa.Swimming pool Excellent restaurant where you can taste some of the Yucatan cuisine. Located close to the village where you can experience Maya life as it really is.The bar awaits you for the best cocktails/margaritas in the area, as well as wine and beer. You have the luxury of Wi fi in all areas including your rooms .An artisan shop where you can buy items including locally made hammocks and snack shop if you want a small snack in-between meals. All the staff are local people from Santa Elena and all structures were build by local people too, including wood work, iron work etc I maybe a foreign owner but how good that work has been created for the local people who would otherwise not have an income.

The Pickled Onion is well situated between Uxmal and several other Mayan sites (where you might be the only visitor). The rooms are in separate bungalows, clean and comfortable, spread in a nice garden. The swimming-pool is clean (which is not always the case in Mexico). You can give your laundry and get it cleaned within the day. The food is good and the staff smiling and attentive. Last but not least, the owner, Valerie, has a nice word for everyone and is full of useful information for her guests.

Quirky excellent accommodation - beds comfortable, clean bathrooms, mosquito nets provided. Great restaurant onsite - delicious dinner. Lovely breakfast on pretty garden terrace. Attractive and good size pool. Great location - very convenient for Uxmal. Friendly hostess and staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay - kids enjoyed it too.

We wanted to return to the Pickled Onion, so I found more things to do on the way! There is so much to do near here - ruins, caves, cenotes, .... We love the grounds of The Pickled Onion, the cabins are comfortable, and the restaurant is a real treat! We had the best tamale we've ever had here, and the rest of the meal was wonderful, too. A great breakfast is included.

What a fabulous short stay with charming Valerie and her staff! Wish we had stayed longer. Nicely maintained, clean and comfortable bungalow with plenty of space. Enjoyed exploring the garden and plantings along the pathways, many specimens were unfamiliar to us and we appreciated the labels. Dinner, drinks and breakfast were excellent, probably the best food we had during our 2 weeks in Mexico. Valerie has written an interesting and comprehensive guidebook in the room with information on what to see in the area, including many great local / insider tips. We did not have a chance to explore much of Santa Elena, or to have a massage at the Pickled Onion but we loved our visit to Uxmal and we do hope to return for a longer stay with Valerie and to explore the surronding area.

Our guide at Uxmal recommended this place for lunch - he even phoned ahead for us. It was only a 15 minute from from our accommodation at the Plantation Hacienda. The owner, Valerie, told us her story - orignally from the UK - circumstances brought her to Mexico to learn Spanish....she never left - set up this business and her flair for simple, authentic food and warm hospitality certainly shines.
