A unique Eco-Boutique Bed and Breakfast located close to Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil and Labnah. Quaint Maya style rooms, complete with private entrance, bathrooms, refrigerator ,coffe maker bottled water, toiletries, safety boxes, Wi Fi in all rooms ,clean, comfortable and secure, set in peaceful surroundings. Rooms are adorned with my own paintings. Beautiful gardens with labyrinth. Area for Yoga, Tai chi etc. Mini Spa.Swimming pool Excellent restaurant where you can taste some of the Yucatan cuisine. Located close to the village where you can experience Maya life as it really is.The bar awaits you for the best cocktails/margaritas in the area, as well as wine and beer. You have the luxury of Wi fi in all areas including your rooms .An artisan shop where you can buy items including locally made hammocks and snack shop if you want a small snack in-between meals. All the staff are local people from Santa Elena and all structures were build by local people too, including wood work, iron work etc I maybe a foreign owner but how good that work has been created for the local people who would otherwise not have an income.
We were on a car trip with Mexican friends We were getting away from the Quintana Roo sites to the Yucatan area we had not seen.. They choose the Pickled Onion, saying it looked interesting. We had traveled from a fancy hotel in Merida to Santa Elena. The Mayan-style dwellings/cabins were great, with hot water, A/C, and a great level of comforts away from a big city. The pool was great, we had a happy hour there, and the grounds were meticulously maintained. This area is in tropical Yucatan, but features grounds that made it a high-end property right up against the natural growth. This is Ms. Pickles life, and her soul is poured out here. We were at the pool, and had a happy hour there. We sadly did not get to eat at the restaurant as we went to the night show at Uxmal. We had a restful night in our cabin, and did greatly enjoy our included breakfast the next morning in a beautiful outdoor area. The meal was served to us on individual plates, with both hot and cold items. The hot items were indeed hot and the cold were cold. Very enjoyable. We talked to Ms. Pickles, and despite her modesty, she is the leader of charity and business in Santa Elena. A wonderful person with a wonderful establishment.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Pickled Onion. The owner Valerie made us feel welcomed and we were impressed by what she has accomplished since moving to Mexico 14 years ago. Our spacious accommodation was lovely with a king size bed and tastefully decorated with Mayan art work. We appreciated the air conditioning, the free wifi and the small refrigerator. The breakfast was served outside on the patio. It was delicious and plentiful. The restaurant menu offered a good selection of Yucatecan cuisine. Everything we ordered was flavorful and appetizing. The property and pool area was very well maintained. I would recommend this BnB to anyone who would enjoy a romantic getaway.
Thank you Rachel for your kind comments
It was a delight to have you here for three nights .. perfect guests .. very much appreciated thank you
Hope you return again .. there will always be a welcome for you here
Saludos
Valerie

Stay here to visit Uxmal, just a few miles down the road. You stay in a large thatched hut beautifully decorated in tile and with a hammock and umbrella for the sun. The restaurant is lovely open air and the menu is small by well selected. The Margarita and the guac has a bit too much lime but who cares? Breakfast is very sumptuous with many items -- the juice was so good I should have asked what it was. Valerie, the owner, was very helpful with directions for my leave-taking. The best beds AND soft pillows in the Yucatan. And the sheets were like butter. Great shower. And REAL toilet paper not that wispy stuff. Buen hecho.
Thank you so much for your very kind comments .. it was a pleasure to have you with us

The Pickled Onion is a gem in this part of the Yucatan! This is THE place to stay to visit a large number of fabulous Puuc region archeological sites (beyond just Uxmal) that do not get a lot of visitation. The owner, Valerie Pickles, has done an amazing job creating a tranquil & authentic opportunity to experience the very best that this region can offer. The accommodations provide adaptations of traditional Maya architecture that are cozy & comfortable for travelers. Valerie has a terrific restaurant with traditional dishes that are wonderful. The staff are exceptional, and most have been with The Pickled Onion for years, demonstrating that this B&B helps support the local community in Sta. Elena in many ways beyond its employment opportunities. My wife & I are anthropologists who visit this area every year. A stop at The Pickled Onion is the perfect start to our fieldwork, before we clean up our own Maya-style research station, and for a peaceful break from the relentless demands of fieldwork. I cannot recommend this place highly enough, for a real taste of living among the wonderful Maya people, the Pickled Onion is the place you want to go! …

Such a magical seating. The rooms are so beautifully decorated. Delicious breakfast outside and the restaurant serves incredible food. Perfect base for Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc...we also visited Kabah and the Coco story museum. Hummingbirds buzzing next to the pool. Valerie and her staff are wonderful. Highly recommended!

This review is for The Pickled Onion Restaurant only, as we did not stay in the accommodations. We ate lunch here on December 2/2022, as it was located ideally between our day trip sightseeing to Uxmal, Kabah and the Chocostory Museum. The great thing about it too, is that it serves vegetarian fare. I ordered codzitos and papadzules which were both delicious. My boyfriend ordered the Poc Chuc (grilled pork marinated in o.j. served with pickled onions, etc.) and he also thought it was very, very good. Nice decor and seating in the outdoor covered dining space. Service was attentive and friendly from the waiters, even though they didn't speak English really. A super hi-lite was actually meeting the owner (our tour guide set it up after I had told him about a picture I saw of her with Patrick Stewart (Star Trek fame) and she was gracious enough to tell me the whole story of his visit there and that was pretty cool! Nice touch from Alex of Destino Merida custom tours for a massive Star Trek fan!!! …

What wasn't to like? I only wish I had been able to stay longer. Valerie is a lovely lady and has created a beautiful place to relax and unwind. Each bungalow is tastefully decorated and the gardens are full of beautiful plants. I loved strolling the path in the morning. The staff was so friendly. Breakfast was amazing! I also had dinner and ordered a sack lunch for my day of visiting nearby ruins. The "box lunch" was well worth it with a nice sandwich, salad, water, fruit, chips and peanuts. Valerie makes everyone feel like family and greets them by name. Highly recommended!!!!

After touring the Cacao/Chocolate Museum and on the way along the Ruta Puuc we decided to stop somewhere for lunch. The sign on the side of the road for The Pickled Onion caught our attention and decided to stop. What a delightful meal we had and very reasonable prices. The Gazpacho was an absolute gem and I could have easily made a complete meal on soup alone! Well worth the stop!!

I didn’t realize that kids weren’t allowed (thought something was wrong with booking.com when it only let me enter 2 adults for a 4-5 person room). But the owner was gracious in letting us stay. It was absolutely wonderful. She was so kind and generous. The food was absolutely delicious. We also loved hearing the birds sing in the morning. But! Take deet spray with you (actually throughout the Yucatán!). Muchas gracias!

My husband and I have been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula since 2002 but this was the first time we stayed at The Pickled Onion which is near one of the large Mayan Ruins of Uxmal. The little cottages are simply furnished and decorated with beautiful local textiles and handicrafts. The room and bathroom are very clean. Even the public restroom near the kitchen is spotless. We ate dinner at the Pickled Onion restaurant and is was the most delicious meal we had had on our 8 day trip. Breakfast the next morning was fresh and tasty. The menu has foods prepared with regional recipes , all very yummy! The pool is sparkling clean and refreshingly cool after a long , hot day of travel. Especially fun was meeting the owner , Valarie, who is interesting to talk to and has a wealth of information on the places to visit nearby. Her impressive and delightful story is in an information notebook in the guest room. When we return in a year we will definitely stay at the Pickled Onion for several days and explore the local caves, pottery village ( called Ticul) , and other places Valerie mentions in her informative notebook. She clearly loves the area and its people and helps support the local economy in an eco friendly way.…

We loved our stay here. The proximity to Uxmal and Ruta de Puuc ensured we had a day trip everyday. Breakfast was included and it was excellent. Valerie and her staff also offer lunch to go! Attention to detail is always present. Valerie offers suggestions and has a wealth of information, including off the grid temples where one can savor the Mayan vibe without crowds.
