Ulcumano Ecolodge is a paradise for nature lovers. Eduardo de la Cadena and his wife Ingrid Mayer Heidinger go above and beyond achieving their goals in being truly sustainable. They provide guests with a five star experience off the beaten track with adventure tours, gourmet food, sparkling pristine and comfortable accommodations, and knowledgeable service. We were very impressed by the extent that De la Cadena took his university thesis, "How to Build a Sustainable Ecolodge in Oxapampa," to heart. We learned about not building above the treeline, about biodigestors, zero waste, solar panels for the entire lodge, etc, etc. This lodge walks the walk when it comes to sustainability and you really learn while you're here so it is perfect to bring kids. They also have canopy zip line, hanging bridges for bird and nature watching and various hikes of all levels (for example one day I did 25,000 steps and my SO did some serious mountain biking).
I can't not mention the food. I'm vegetation and while easy to please, Ingrid, the chef, went above and beyond. She transformed fruits, veggies, quinoa, potatoes into gourmet meals expected of the Peruvian gastronomic scene. We had fresh jungle fruit juices at every meal and out of this world desserts at each meal as well. Chocolate cheesecake, lime cheesecake, rhubarb pie, apple cake with homemade vanilla ice cream, homemade jams, homemade bread, fried plantains and yucca.....need I keep going? Ulcumano Ecolodge is worth the 10 hour drive from Lima!
Also finally, the staff clearly love their jobs as it shows in their attitudes and level of service. Their smiles and kind thoughtfulness were infectious.
We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay and all of the people and nature of Ulcumano Ecolodge.
We got to disconnect from the city and tech, which gave us a much needed time to connect with each other.
The food needs a paragraph on its own. It was OUT OF THIS WORLD! It shocked us (in a great way) how good it was, from presentation to flavors and variety. Eduardos wife cooked and she did magic for us. We booked the all inclusive package, which included breakfast, lunch and dinner, totally recommended.
The only thing that made us sad is that we couldn’t do zipline as it was closed, but we understood it was because of the weather and for our own safety. Check with Eduardo which activities are available on the time of your stay.
Heads up, you only get wifi in the dining area, signal not that strong, but who goes to a beautiful place like this to be using their techy stuff. To communicate and do basic things is more than enough.
Overall, a great stay and would recommend!
The lodge is beautiful and extremely well-taken care of. The cloudy forest provided us with some unforgettable experiences: we got to see beautiful birds, butterflies, an enormous variety of plants, and the most beautiful sky ever. The staff helped us enhance our experience by giving us walks in the surroundings, a very safe yet exciting canopy experience (walk in a bridge circuit that allowed us to walk on top of the trees), a climbing arena (palestra), among others. The food is simply spectacular and every single little detail is looked after in order to make us feel at home!
Thank you Eduardo, Ingrid and all of the staff for everything. We will surely be back!!
Eduardo - the owner - a wise naturist explained us about his project that combines one side the ecotourism and the other side the protection of our forest/environment.
Be there we enjoyed our stay and disconnected with all "today technologies" to return to nature.
We went in families with school children and we really enjoyed the tour they gave us, we learned a lot about Sustainability, Species that inhabit the Lodge and the history of Ulcumano. Really a quite inspiring project that we should all know about, a lot to learn and a way for children to internalize the responsibility we have in taking care of the planet.
The food was spectacular, the most delicious we have ever had, cooked by Eduardo's wife who is from Oxapampa. The hospitality and kindness remains in our hearts!
Thank you very much for receiving us and giving us a beautiful experience!
