Simply the best resort in the Playgrounds area for singles or couples - intermediate or advanced surfers. And it has gotten even better - with a complete revamp of the menu following input from a couple of "guest chefs" and Alice working closely with the kitchen staff earlier this year. Good food is now great food. And a new high speed 10 metre fiberglass centre console surf boat will replace the old traditional wooden boat - resulting in far quicker (and drier) trips to outlying surf spots. And there are now professional yoga teachers on the island - which was a huge hit with the better half!
When we reach Rifles, the sets are pumping with 6ft+ waves. There are only a handful of guys in the water. Christie says: "Go for it! There´s a wave out there, that´s the wave of your life”. This is probably a normal day for him, but for me it will probably be the best surf session of my life. I try to contain my anxiety and stay calm, but my head and my heart are pumped with sheer excitement. What follows is pure joy. You bet, the wave of my life... This pretty much sums up my Wavepark experience. 11 days of surfing, 6 hours or more per day of surfing with mostly empty lineups. Yes, there are exceptions, with a few crowded sessions, depending on the wind and weather. There are charter boats, but most of the time it´s choosing your bomb and dropping into happiness. "The bigger, the better," as Christie says. We had two excellent surf guides, Gui and James, who made sure everyone got the most out of it, advising when it´s safe to surf and when not. Not getting hurt is a noble objective here. These guys not only share all the local knowledge, but are so kind as to concede you priority when they have it. "Are you sure you´re not going? Go, go, go!" As you paddle back to the lineup, you´re eternallly grateful. As I head back home, my mind is confused trying to remember the details of the sessions. Which one was better? When was I scared? Which wave did I miss out? It all has gotten blurred. There have been so many good waves that it´s hard to remember... The team is superb: Christie, Alice, Gui, Jana, James, the guys on the boat, the girls in the kitchen. Pure good vibes. The beach at Wavepark must be one of the most beautiful on Earth. We´ve travelled a lot, but we elected it #1. The beers, slides and dinner... one unforgettable day after the other... And then crashing into bed at 8PM physically destroyed and waking up at 5:40AM to check Hideaways right out front. Christie and the team are on the top of the learning curve of the Mentawais. 20+ years of experience have made Wavepark a world class surf resort, possibly the very best. Cheers, Olympio…
Brilliant trip! Wavepark is luxury on a remote tropical island!! Lovely rooms, good food, amazing service. Well done Christy and Alice for running such a good operation! Of course we came for the surfing and we weren't disappointed - good surf every day for 10 days. You won't believe me but by the end of 10 days they will have surfed you into the ground. Do your best to be in shape before you arrive! An incredible amount of waves in the vicinity. Waves were great in March.
Wavepark is a high quality owner run camp that draws on 2 decades of experience. It’s run to perfection. The playgrounds area needs no review. Wavepark is centrally located on a beautiful tropical island. Rooms are large, well maintained and very comfortable, with views out onto the ‘house reef’, one of the best waves around. The management team and guides, Amanda, Gui and Will looked after us so well and the staff are a delight. Thank you all. This is our second stay here, and we plan to return soon again.
The service from the WavePark crew from the time we arrived in Padang airport until the time we left was second to none. After carting three surfboards through airports it was a relief not to touch them until I stepped into my Bungalow on the island.
