I did a great experience into the jungle to visit and live with a Mentawai tribe. The best experience of my life! Everything was authentic and perfect, not for everyone, but if you like this kind of experience, the nature and the anthropological side you must do it!

The jungle tour I have taken on Siberut island to the medicine men has been an amazing and very unique experience. When I got off the Mentawai-fast ferry in Maileppet from Padang, father Yan and daughter Sitta were already waiting for me at the docks. I spend the night at their beautiful house with ocean view 1 night before heading off to the village of Malaggasat. In the morning we hopped on a small boat in the river that took us to the medicine men. During this trip you can enjoy the beautiful jungle in a very relaxed way. Being Mentawaian himself, Yan knows everything about the culture and taught me a lot.

Upon arrival we were greeted by the people living in the uma (traditional longhouse). There were all sorts of activities planned such as fishing, making medicine, poisoned arrows, loin cloths, go hunting and a traditional dance. I loved all of the activities but my favourite was going with the medicine man to hunt as it involved physical activity.

After 2 nights we were hiking to another village called Dorougot. We were lucky that it wasn’t slippery or muddy as it wasn’t rain season.

Roughly half way we stopped for a nice refreshing swim we really needed near a beautiful waterfall.
The uma in Dorougot was clearly much larger than the one in Malaggasat and they had a basket full of delicious rambutan, my new favourite fruit. After spending 1 night here we were going back to Maileppet where we had the most amazing lobster in a spicy Padang sauce, all organized by Sitta and Yan. After all that hiking it was time for some well-deserved relaxing at the beautiful accommodation Sitta and Yan have built on the Island of Karangmajat.

We spend 3 nights on the island and we swam in the sea, went snorkelling, I was taught how to fish using just a line with a hook and bait and we also went to the mangrove forest and gathered seafood there.

The cook that was hired was really good and cooked us 3 meals per day. My favourite was the seafood rendang using the seafood we gathered earlier in the mangrove forest. Seafood doesn’t get any fresher than this!

I‘ve had a wonderful time in Indonesia and all thanks to Umata Village!

Umata house is located in the most beautiful quiet part of karamajaat (kandui) island ..directly looking out to pristine clear safe waters and deserted island located very close to some of the best waves in the area rifles , pitstops ,kandui ,baby kandui ,a frames and 4 bobs(less than 5 minutes) and within a 20 minute boatride to all the other great waves in the playground surf paradise .. the beds and house are super clean surrounded by lush tropical rainforest .. did not notice many mosquitos or insects .. the staff are super friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make sure your stay is a great experience.. fresh water, fruit and coconuts are are easily available ..the meals are beautiful and of a great size with many different choices .. Jan is a most wonderful host with a calm easy going nature with a great sense of humour who makes all of your stay extremely comfortable and well organised..also you can do a trip to see how the local mentawai tribal people live and visit their village ,( a must I feel ) I thoroughly recommend a stay at this beautiful place ..you will enjoy a true piece of mentawai paradise ... Great waves enjoy!!!

Yann is a very kind guide who lives in Siberut. He knows the Mentawai culture perfectly and knows how to pass it on.
He made us discover sublime and uncrowded places in the jungle. We met some very endearing characters and far from the tourist circuits.
We then went to the island of karengmajat in the Mentawai Islands to sleep in robinson's house. A sublime wooden house lost in the ocean. We have sinned, surfed and visited the other islands with crystal clear waters. An exceptional moment.
His cook feasted us all as we cooked with him too.
We had the great feeling of freedom and doing what we liked when we wanted.
A trip recommended but especially this great guide who knows all the best addresses.
Do not hesitate to contact him even if all this must remain secret.

I stayed in Umata many times and will continue to go there. The location is perfect, close to the surfing spots, with Baby Kandui just in front. It is also an excellent place just to relax. People working in Umata are very friendly and makes you feel home. Umata is a place to have a true Mentawaii experience.
I did a couple of trekking inland Siberut with Yan from Umata and these are trips that I strongly recommend. Yan knowledge about the Mentawaii culture really allows to understand the Mentawaii way. I will always be back.

We stayed at Umata Village for 2 nights and we absolutely loved it. It´s close to the beach and Karangmajat is a beautiful island. I really loved the traditional style of the accommodation and the fact that the owners are locals, so they have a lot of knowledge of the Mentawais. Keep in mind that it takes some time to get here. First take the (fast) ferry to Siberut and then you need to arrange a local boat to go to the island. Sitta and Yan can help you! Our trip to the Mentawais was the highlight of our Sumatra trip. Totally recommended.
