Thanks for a memorable holiday !
Being in our 60th wedding anniversary year we decided to take our family of nine for a nine day holiday at the Athina Palace Resort and Spa with ages ranging from 11 to ourselves in our eighties. Our initial impression regarding our accommodation was that it warranted a four star rather than a five star rating. However, with my wife and I being in our eighties, we were very pleased to find ourselves situated in a room 274 which was equidistant from the reception /restaurants area and main pool ….. approximately 150 metres from each. With the complex being situated on quite an incline, had we been given a room in the ‘lower properties’ I suspect that it would have been more problematic due to the steps and incline (oldies please note) ! The youngsters in the party of course, housed in lower down accommodation’ didn’t find this a problem at all !! The reception staff were extremely welcoming and very efficient at all times and many thanks in particular the three female receptionists for all the advice and information you gave to us during our stay. The restaurant areas produced a good and varied selection of food at all times with the constant renewal of freshly cooked food. Special thanks to Kostas and Luca in the breakfast veranda…….. always amiable with their welcoming smiles and efficient service. The local coach service to Helrakion which runs from the hotel is certainly worth consideration for a mere €3 euros each way with good shopping areas and a very good selection of bars and restaurants etc. there. (Approx. a half hour journey). Agia Pelagia beach is worthy of a trip with a few boutique shops and a good selection of restaurants although the beach is very narrow and consequently rather crowded. The only disadvantage is that taxis seem to have the monopoly and charge €15 per trip for a ten to fifteen minute journey !! In conclusion, apart from our initial reaction to our room, we all thoroughly enjoyed our nine days at the Athina Palace. The complex itself is very impressive and well maintained with great views and we would like to thank all members of staff for a truly memorable holiday.
Dear guests, On behalf of team Athina Palace Resort & Spa, we would like to thank you for choosing our hotel. It's always great to hear what a good job the whole team has done to make you feel welcome and special during your stay. It's always a pleasure to welcome you to our little paradise in Crete and we can't wait to welcome you back here. Best regards from Team Athina Palace, Resort and Spa.

Not a 5* but still a very lovely hotel
So I will start by saying that the hotel isn’t a 5* however we still thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The room was light and spacious. Excellent shower! The room was cleaned every day with the added touch of bottled water and sometimes a bottle of wine, I even got a rose on our last day. The staff are lovely we didn’t have a problem with anyone. The food was not what I would call great however I am a very fussy eater so that’s on me, hubby always had a full plate and enjoyed the food. I always managed to find something to my taste. The evening meal was always accompanied with water and your choice of wine or beer. The views are spectacular! There is a very well priced bus that goes into the city which we used twice. I didn’t particularly like the use of the plastic cups but I understand why they would use them around the pool area however they could of been bigger. The pools are lovely, we didn’t use any of them as the weather has not been the best but we have enjoyed sitting around the adult pool reading and relaxing. All in all we really enjoyed our stay here, don’t let the bad reviews put you off.

    Good value
Obviously my opening comment depends on how much you paid for your stay. We got an excellent deal for a week on all inclusive basis with the flight from Barcelona included. Let me begin with the positives. Very friendly and helpfull staff. A large renovated bedroom with magnificent views ( room 136 ). A good shuttle bus to the rooms some of which are a long way from reception ( we had to walk up 155 steps to the dining room ) The pools are good and not overcrowded. We only drink wine so had no issues as reasonable quality wine was available everywhere. Now the not so good points . Despite the room and bathroom being large there is very little storage space for your clothes and the bathroom is rather dark . We twice requested early wake up calls but didn't get them. The hotel is not suitable for people with mobilty problems as everywhere you go is either up or down steep slopes. The food is not very exciting and usually it's cold . However, despite my complaints I still consider it to be good value.

not a lot of vegetarian options, the pool is really nice, they only have beds of singles, the cleaning and change of towels wasn’t good as we wished but overall was okay, the employees are nice and there’s a bus every 20ish minutes from the rooms to the beach and hotel. We enjoyed our time there, the views are amazing

Pros: beautiful location in terms of the views. Beach bar has a nice vibe and staff are good in the bar, very nice cocktails but you have to pay extra for these. That’s about it for the pros I’m afraid. Maria in the restaurant was so lovely. Cons; hotel is set on a cliff and is extremely hilly and steep, if you have any kind of walking difficulty this is not the hotel for you. Food is pretty average and drinks are the usual watered down all inclusive rubbish. The pool vibe is LOUD, there is something odd with the pool chlorination as it turned all our swimsuits green, soaking them didn’t bring out the chlorine so they are pretty ruined. The rooms are awful, we paid extra for a refurbished room with a sea view but it must have been refurbished 20 years ago….very dated and horrible old shower curtain, thin and worn towels. This hotel is very French centric, the entertainment is all in French which I’ve never encountered before. One evening we were told we could not get involved as it was a French game! Not very inclusive at all. All in all, not the best but we made the best of it. Not somewhere we will return to.

We went in August for 10 days and was totally disappointed. When the bus dropped us off down a dirt track road into the resort, we thought how nice the reception was and that when thing went downhill. Our room was tiny bearings in mind there is 3 of us, the beds were rock hard, the bathroom was dirty, shower curtain was dirty, bath was old and discolored and there was just a shower in the bath, which was facing the wrong direction.all the silicone and tiles was disgusting, the air-con was on constant but the room was still warm.Basically it was a 2/3 star rated room. The pool was ok and also the food was very good and most of the staff were friendly, except the animations team, they completely ignored myself and my family on our whole trip, not sure why they would talk to people next to us on sun beds on many occasions and walk straight past us MAYBE THEY DONT SPEAK ENGLISH or just plain rude. All the entertainment was in French Overall experience 2/3 star hotel that needs a lot spent on it and a lot of training to animations team.

TUI flight delayed so we ended up having one night in this hotel. We go hiking and this place put us to the test as its on a steep hill with loads of stairs and like a maze to add to it. Bar and dining room has no toilets you have to go to another floor for them which is odd. First room was ok a sea view walk in shower but they moved us into a dire 70`s style room with someone`s socks under the bed, nice. It also smell terrible and made our clothes stink too. Food and Drinks were worst I have ever encountered with added pleasure of chipped tableware and grubby cutlery. It is mainly French clients so they smoke everywhere which I disliked eating lunch n smelling cigs. The reception moved us as a group and made a complete mess of it with wrong keys etc, so we got their paperwork off them and advised what was wrong and how to fix it. I hated this place and was so happy to leave.

Our flight was delayed so TUI arranged this as overnight accommodation - what an absolute shambles. On arrival we were herded off the coach into reception. We then had to hand over passports and were given a room key. We then waited an hour and a half outside reception for one minibus to cart people around the hotel because you need three Sherpas and a donkey to find your room. They left a woman with crutches to get on the minibus herself, myself and my husband assisted her on. Halfway down a cliff whilst carting 2x 20kg suitcases and hand luggage - one of these my wedding dress - down at least 40 steps (don’t know how we are getting it back up) we eventually got to our room. Having actually stayed at a five star before our flight was delayed we can assure you this is not a five star hotel. Room was clean but outdated, A/C was very noisy (my sisters room had A/C that didn’t even work). Bedside lamp shade had been burst with holes in it. When the room door was closed there was still a gap outside. The balcony was too hot to sit at - the sun we can accept but the external part of the A/C unit sat on the floor of the balcony blowing more hot air at you which just made it intolerable. The pillows were so high I nearly had whiplash getting up in the morning, though the mattress was comfortable enough. I was terrified to flush the toilet because it made a horrible noise like something was about to explode. The breakfast wasn’t that enjoyable… orange juice had a weird after taste (a bit chemically maybe from the glasses), a staff member seen me try to lift an egg onto my plate was too impatient to wait on me doing this that she bumped my arm out of the way and proceeded to wipe the counter under me and my egg burst in the tray… wtf. Pancakes and hazelnut spread was banging but nothing else all that appetising. Hotel layout reminds of Squid Games when they all follow in single file across multiple levels of hallways - bit of a maze and not for people with mobility, cardiac, or respiratory issues. The gym is a bit of a joke and the pictures are a bit like expectation versus reality. I don’t normally do reviews but this whole experience has been a horrible end to what was supposed to be a luxurious holiday for our wedding in Crete. Disappointed with TUI and disappointed with our new digs that should be two star max. If I’d booked this for two weeks I’d be devastated. Staff were unhelpful and quite rude.

Not our choice of hotel. We were placed here two weeks before we were due to travel by Loveholidays as the hotel we had booked had become ‘unavailable’. First impressions, the reception area was large, clean and quite grand. The night staff ( we were delayed and arrived after midnight) gave us the information we needed and took us to our rooms. Down a steep drive, followed by 80 (yes 80) steps to our room. Athena Palace is billed as 5 star. Our room was most definitely not. It was dated, tired had only two wall sockets and a balcony door that you had to lift to open. The curtains didn’t cover the window properly and the shower was a an over bath one that you had to hook onto the wall. Very 1980’s. Breakfast was a good buffet spread with a lot of choice. The odd waiter/waitress was lovely, but mostly they spent their time catering for the French families (who are the main clientele). This is served in the restaurant next to reception at the top of the site. There are two pools, one adult only and the other dubbed the activity pool. Great for adults or children. The staff at the adult only pool were lovely. Now if you are all inclusive the only lunch option is by the activity pool. A downhill (or steps) walk from reception. The beach is also a 20 min walk downhill (or you can catch the shuttle bus, no seat belts and a wide open door 😳) For dinner, back up to the restaurant at the top of the hill. All good if you are young, able bodied, don’t have small children with you. But in 30 + degrees heat this has to be taken into consideration. We saw families with young children struggling 30 + stairs with buggies. The website boasts two lifts. And yes there are, in reception. They don’t take you to your room. Reception staff were rude, dismissive and unhelpful at times. When you need to check out they will come and collect your bags , so at least you don’t have to drag them up all the stairs. But if you’re being picked up later than check out you can carry on using the facilities. He’s took up the offer of a shower. Wish we hadn’t bothered. The showers were more like a sauna, tiny and with a fifteen minute window (not great for two people) and if your over 6 feet you’ll have to shower sitting down.

I really enjoyed my stay. The shuttle buses were excellent for me as I am disabled and so couldn’t walk from room to main complex. The guys driving the shuttle were very helpful and would lift my walker in and out of the bus to my room. Relax pool was very peaceful and we enjoyed our days there. Sophia on reception was very kind and helpful. Restaurant staff were all pleasant and food was nice and plentiful. No queuing and food was fresh. We really enjoyed our stay

Realistcally 3-4☆ Stunning views & scenery surrounding this hotel , however very hilly & wouldn't have been my choice but Loveholidays forced a change 10 days before departure however there's a free shuttle bus within hilly hotel grounds, not advisory if you have English kids wanting to participate in kids club ran by only French speaking reps,. Feel slightly outnumbered by (we don't queue) mainly French guests. Food is plentiful but can be slightly repetitive , staff are very helpful & polite ,room service daily including towels , water , bin made up & toilet bin emptied ( cant flush toilet roll )but had to ask for more coffee, ( no milk supplied but bar staff will give you cup). A la carte restaurant was 5star Maintainance was good as our door failed to lock midway thru holiday and was quickly repaired within 15mins. Would be hesitant to return due to isolated location & hilly surroundings but wouldn't say never Had to endure long transfer 2½hrs again due to love holidays changing accommodation
