For a taste of local culture try Villa Monyet's famous barbeque night. The way we eat is unique; nasi liwet or rice cooked in a traditional wok with special spices, is served up with the freshest, most succulent local barbequed fish, crabs and prawns on huge banana leaves at one long, single table. Everyone eats together, without spoons or forks, only hands, often fighting over the best part of the fish, or the last bit of sambal, just as monkeys do. That's why our place is called Villa Monyet.

We had the privilege of taking 1 month out of our life to stay and enjoy this peaceful village, the accommodation and people of Villa Monyet, the daily prayers, the relaxed pace, the waves and mix of cultures that are attracted to this remote paradise on earth. We love the connections we made during our stay here, the food a great, the staff are super friendly - as are everyone in the village. One just needs to overlook the litter on the streets (the locals just don't seem to see it), and get used to the haze in air due to fires burning from the leaves that are ever present and burnt throughout the day. We gorged ourselves on the abundant tropical fruits - papaya, dragonfruit, mangos especially and so, so cheap at the market in town, over the bamboo bridge. You will want to have a scooter during your stay, the staff can arrange this. Here you will eat well, sleep well, and feel well if you take the time to stop and see if for all that there is to enjoy in this simple village.

I visited the Hostel in February 2018. It was the best hostel i stayed in. The staff was amazing. The break fast was amazing. I ate the noodles everyday because they were the best asian noodles i ever had. If you are in Batu Karas, you have to stay there! The beach is also very near!

We stayed for 3 nights in the "family surf" Villa..we enjoyed ourselves staying there. The room was very unique, has a cozy traditional design with mosquito nets..felt like living in the jungle.the AC worked well, no TV and the big fridge were really helpful eventhough they need to defrost the freezer part,so we can use it to put ice blocks...but the staff helped us to move the fridge to the balcony..and my husband defrosted the fridge himself. The bathroom was nice and big, has a spot to hang your wet clothes and towels with transparant roof so the clothes get dry faster..there's a shower with a hot water, but they need to take care of the toileteries, fix the broken shower hanger and wipe all stainless steel with special chemical to make them look clean and shiny...no toothpaste & toothbrushes..but they provide clean towels. The bed was nice, bed sheets were really clean but they give us only quilt (almost the same like bedsheet)..without duner in it..so we got really cold at night cause we had no blanket..so i had to ask for more quilt the next day and they gave us some, so we slept better the next night. The breakfast was good, especially the banana muffins. We could make tea or coffee anytime for free at their dining area and get free drinking water. The staff were nice, no daily cleaning service..it would be good if they can collect the garbage from outside bin everyday and give us extra towel door mats.. We used the bycicle they provide for free...was fun! Overall we had no problem staying there..had a really nice holiday..the beach was right in front of us..you can swim anytime, the restaurants and tourist area only 700m from our villa...very recommended.. We miss Villa Monyet already..sure we'll come back next time.

I arrived to BatuKaras last summer, I was traveling alone, the hotel is little bit expensive for the service they offer. All the boys staff are trying with the tourist and all of them have family and are married, some times as a girl is uncomfortable be there, and the night they organize the bbq and all of them are drunk is getting worst. The wave for beginners hahaha is not a beginner wave, and if you are lucky to take some waves, the locals too much smile but don't share the waves, is impossible. I was there 2 weeks and I just was happy in the water when the conditions are not good if not you don't take any wave, and I'm literally saying you can be sitting in your board during 3 hours that no one, local, kid... no one let you any wave. So I don't recommend this place, only if you are a "pro" instagram surfer, then all people is super nice.

Friday BBQ night is a must go. The fish that was served was amazing. You will need to reserve a place before hand, as they only buy fish upon reservation. All the holiday goers will typically gather here for good live music on friday evening.. Really fun! Satay in the restaurant is really good too. The staff in Villa Monyet are very nice and friendly. Definitely will go back to villamonyet again if i visit batu karas.

Stayed with my husband and two kids (13&17) for five nights. It is a beautiful property and does have a great breakfast. The people that work here are extremely nice, and Acho was very helpful. It is a super chill vibe, I guess just a little too chill for us. We stayed in the family room, and the porch of it is very lovely. Inside the room and bathroom were not very clean. There were many spiders and spiderwebs, including on the mosquito netting and sometimes inside the mosquito netting (not small spiders), and “droppings” of creatures we never saw. The bathroom had an unidentifiable substance around the base of the walls of the shower. There was no daily housekeeping, which the website clearly states there is. We had to take our trash out several times and continually ask for more toilet paper. There were always several 20somethings, who were not staying at the property, hanging around the kitchen/restaurant. Seems normal, but they would be there until quite late (midnight to 2am) and were not very quiet, which is a problem if you’re staying in the family room since it is right above the kitchen. They also always seemed to kind of take over the restaurant area so there weren’t tables available for people staying there. We did do the monkey feast and that was very nice and delicious. All in all a beautiful spot but it just wasn’t for us.
