For a taste of local culture try Villa Monyet's famous barbeque night. The way we eat is unique; nasi liwet or rice cooked in a traditional wok with special spices, is served up with the freshest, most succulent local barbequed fish, crabs and prawns on huge banana leaves at one long, single table. Everyone eats together, without spoons or forks, only hands, often fighting over the best part of the fish, or the last bit of sambal, just as monkeys do. That's why our place is called Villa Monyet.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travelers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
The place is amazing , the team is so super nice, the food is delicious , loads of choice for breakfast and fresh fruits and juices. On friday night I recommend the BBQ fish night ! The place is facing the ocean and a great surf spot. This place is a gem, I can only recommend it.

Wonderful place to chill. Or just on the accommodation itself, or across the street on the street. The room was very cozy and comfortable. Jungle juice is highly recommended. Food fine. Unfortunately the coffee machine was broken, so no cappuccino, but that was just a minor matter.

My first husband and I have stayed at Villa Monyet three times now. We love it there because 1) it has a really comfortable bed and a nice bathroom, 2) a good vibe - we've always end up having a great social time there, and 3) handy to sea shops etc. The owners have done an amazing job with the garden - they've been able to develop it so all the bungalows are quite private from the others which I think is important. They organised body rafting trips and a sunset cruise and day trips. No negatives. Well priced. Highly recommend.

Hello ManPanDili Thank you for choosing Villa Monyet for your stay everytime you have holiday in Batukaras. I do not know ho many times you have been staying with us, perhaps 6-7 times !. It's always greaaaaat time !. Thank you very much that you like our gardens and bungalows, yes we design every room to have privacy, private bathrooms, private balcony or terrace. We provide the daybeds and hammocks for every room, so you can enjoy your lazy time while reading your books. Body rafting and sunset trips that we have done were always amazing. Green Canyon, Green Valley, sunset in the lagoon and picnic At The Clouds (the hills up around Batu Karas great place to watch sunset and sunrise with the beautiful view of the ocean, mountains, rice fields, river and jungles). See you again in 4 months Nano

Arrived at Monyet and within a minute decided to look for another place. First of all the Seaweed room does not live up to the pictures on the internet. Ceiling is concreet with the pins out, the bathroom looks like it's under construction. Moreover the room was not that clean with lot of stains on the curtains. The balcony is nice with the hammock but there is no chair available in Monyet to sit on. So if you are traveling together one of you get's the relaxation and the other has to sit on a very hard wooden plank. The website mentions Beachview from you balcony. All you see is trees and plants. Breakfast is not that great and all the breakfastoptions listed on the internet are not available. However the bed is good and the hot shower as well. I would not recommand the Seaweed Room because it's not worth the money. Monyet is also a bit to far from the action.

Dear Carina 850, Thank you very much for your review. Yes the seaweed room was not totally finished when you stayed but our staff did explain this to you, before you agreed to stay in the room. As soon as you complained about the room, we immediately offered help to find you other hotel, and would have quickly found you another place. But you said it was ok, and decided to stay. We had been trying to finish the Seawood Room when it was un-occupied. But because we had a lot of bookings and guests still wanted to stay there, we were unable to complete the work on the room. We explained to all our guests who walk in or book through emails that this room had not been completely finished, and we offered guests a lower weekday rate for this reason. I believe Villa Monyet staff did explain this to you. Since your review, we blocked all bookings for Seaweed Room for 3 weeks, in order to finish it. Now it has lovely wooden floors and ceiling, a hot shower, TV (local channels), a beautiful wooden daybed on the balcony to enjoy the garden, and is the only room with air-conditioning. However when you stayed, the balcony, had a long bench, which is long enough to easily seat 2 people, as well as hammock. THE LOCATION Villa Monyet is not on the main busy beach. We are on the peaceful beach side, which means we don't have big tour buses rolling past or parking in front of us. Villa Monyet is for people who seek to experience local culture, life style, warm atmosphere but in a quite, green ambiance. The main surfing beach is 10 minutes walk and the reef break beach is just a throw stone from our balcony. THE VIEW to the beach from seaweed balcony: When you were in Seaweed Room, the plants were blocking the view to the beach, as we hadn't trimmed the small garden in front. The land in our garden is very fertile, as we use organic fertilizer that makes the plants grow really fast and healthy. Now we trim plants whenever it's blocking the view from the Seaweed Room. So now you can see the beach again from seaweed room balcony. THE BREAKFAST: We have banana pancake with brown sugar, home made bread or muffin, banana jaffle, vegetable omelette, nasi goreng or mie goreng/rebus and fresh fruits are included in every breakfast. We are open to suggestion from our guests if they need to have breakfast with their own style. And 90% of our guests are satisfied with the breakfast menu. Free tea or coffee and water for 24 hours or we often have free food for lunch or dinner, just feel like home. When we have the food laid out at the table in the jungle kitchen, means it is for everyone. Help yourself to the food, and it's free. So thank you very much for your review, which helps us give better service to our guests. We would like to offer you very good deal to thank you for your review. Please send us email when you are planning to come back to Batukaras. Sincerely yours Nano

The hotel may be very suitable for younger people who seek surfing and relaxing in a homely atmosphere. For elderlies who are used to more comfort may be not so convinient. However the staff is friendly and assist you in any way.
On the other hand travelling with a car to reach the place is as 200 years ago travelling through the country by horse carriage. The road from Pangandaran to Batu Karas with a distance of 30km is like you driving with a tractor on an uneven paddock and for this distance you need 2 hours. So, more convinient access is by helicopter or hoovercraft or sea access by boat from Pngandaran to Batu Karas

Dear Peter Thank you very much for choosing Villa Monyet for your holiday destination. It was great to have you at our hotel. Thank you for the review that says we are friendly, that is a nice compliment. And basically the people here in the village are also friendly to every visitor, so it is our culture for being friendly. they are happy to say hello to guests without disturbing them. We are happy to have you here We've been trying to help our guests with the informations about Batu Karas and around . Yes most of our guests are young people who come to Batu Karas for surfing, but actually we have other things to do for the guests who come here with their families. They visit the places around us which are not far from Villa Monyet such as body rafting in Green Canyon, walking and swimming to Green valley, country side tour (rice fields, home industry such as sugar cane home industry, making roofs from alang along that locals use for their houses, sunset trip to the lagoon , watching the sunset/beach/mountains/river/ricefields from up the hills or swimming at the beautiful secret beach). We are sorry if we did not give you enough information about everything. Now the guests can get informations what to do while they are at Villa Monyet, they can do the trips by themself or guided by us or other local guides. About the road from Pangandaran to Batu Karas, it's been 2 months being fixed, the government said it will be totally finish by the end of 2013. This time the road is fixed by profesional contractors that guarantee the quality of the road is as good as high way and smooth. So next time You'll come to batu Karas You will not feel like hiring a helicopter to travel around. We hope you had good time after holiday in Batu Karas. Sincerelly yours Nano

We stayed in Riversider the first day and moved to Villa Monyet after. Both places are set to be natural but Villa Monyet is way ahead! The room is spacious, clean and beautifully decorated. No need aircon because the room does catch the sea breeze. They also equip with LCD TV with some international channels although you may not need it because you'll be too busy surfing in the beach :) they also add personal touch by putting flower in some spots inside the room. Love it! Bath room is clean, strong shower, towels and bath amenities are also provided. Free flow of drinking water, coffee or tea that you can take in the kitchen. And the famous monkey feast in the night (advance order) for those who like fresh seafood BBQ and chat with all new friends all night long. Homemade bread or pancake, and local fruits available for breakfast. I heart the beach infront of the villa, it's in the quiet side of Batukaras but you can enjoy surfing as well as playing in the sand, even better than the public beach. But if you like the crowd, you can head to the public beach by bike or just 10 minutes walking.

I do not think I could write enough good things about my stay at Villa Monyet, I recommend it a thousand times over and hope to return (I have to!) some day. I had read that Batu Karas is a place that you come originally for a few days and want to stay for 2 weeks, so I planned to stay for 12 days… and still ended up changing my travel plans so I could stay for another week. The whole staff is amazing, so nice and welcoming. I was traveling by myself and really enjoyed that I became friends with the staff, and would often spend the afternoons or evenings laying in the hammock chatting with Iin and Obay or listening to Nana or some of the other guys who would stop by play the guitar. I was lucky enough to be there for 3 monkey feasts, which were delicious and so much fun. It is about a 10 minute walk to the main beach with the point break and restaurants, but it is a nice walk along the beach (or you can easily rent a scooter) or you can also order food to be delivered if you are feeling lazy at night ☺ Villa Monyet is also right near the reef break, so if you want to surf there it is super convenient. I liked being a littler further from the main part, it is so peaceful at Villa Monyet and the common area and gardens are so relaxed and beautiful. I stayed in the Reef Break room, which I loved and could hear the waves, and then when I extended my stay I moved to the Seaweed Room, which had nice high ceilings and a hammock on the front porch. The rooms are simple, don't expect anything fancy, but clean and so natural and airy, I love all of the bamboo and thatched roofs. Be prepared to hear the prayer from the mosque early in the morning, maybe pack some earplugs, but it’s Java so you just get used to it. Breakfast is awesome, they have a few options but I loved the banana pancakes so much I had one every morning, plus you are always served a plate of fresh fruit. Overall, I think that Villa Monyet is the best option if you want to have a beautiful, relaxed setting and really feel like you get to meet and become friends with locals as opposed to just staying in a hostel or the main hotel. I fell so in love with the place and all of the people in Batu Karas and am already scheming how I can return! Terima kasih to all of the monyets!

Dear Carolyn, You left your heart in Batu Karas and you will get your heart back in Batu Karas ☺. It is hard to get to Batu Karas but it is hard to leave Batu Karas ☺. The red hammock under the teakwood has your name on it. So when you come back you will know which one is yours ☺. And we are always happy to rock you to sleep with the guitar and the sea breeze after the BBQ night (monkeys’ feast) or in the day after your surf. Ibu Awat and Achi are missing you, they keep asking me when will they cook banana pancake for you again?! See you, Nana & the Monyet Crew
