This is a lovely lodge central to Kibale Chimpanzee trekking and other beautiful crater reserves. The rooms are basic, but they are clean and have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The food was average but plentiful. The small balconies of each room have beautiful panoramic views and we spent most of our free time sat watching the birds. If you like birds, you will love the variety you get to see here. All in all, we enjoyed our two nights here. I think this is a good place to base yourself for two nights but I think any longer would be too much. The owners are are a lovely couple who were always on hand to offer advice and help.
We weren't scheduled to stay hear during our safari, but we were delighted when this was our lodge while in chimpanzee country. Karen, with her dogs, cat, and great staff all made it feel like we were visiting with old friends in their home, Being vegetarians, we were particularly happy with the meals - the best we had while in Uganda. Wish we could have stayed much longer! Best for those without agility/mobility issues - be prepared for lots of up and down steps to get around this lovely property.
Isunga lodge is run by an expat Scottish couple, Karen and Gerard. The lodge is just excellent. In particular, they arrange a 4 day trip through them that was just great. Besides being extremely friendly and hospital, what I really appreciated was their sharing of honest information about what to see in Uganda. I would highly recommend anyone arranging a trip to Uganda through them. Bruce
We spent 11 days in Uganda and this was by far the best place we stayed! The 270 degree views were unbelievable, the food was the best we had during the trip, beers were cold, service was excellent with very responsive staff, plus really comfortable beds and hot showers. IT could not be beat. So happy we stayed there! Thanks to everyone at Isunga Lodge!
The Isunga Lodge is a beautiful property with a main dining and relaxation area and individual cabins, each with an impressive amount of privacy. We found ourselves wondering how the owners ever managed to construct this impressive compound given the narrow road and paths in and around the property. They disturbed the environment as little as possible and built in concert with it, using local labor and materials. The owners and the staff were absolutely lovely and extremely accommodating. Whatever we wanted, we had within minutes. The food was fantastic. I am a vegetarian and the meals I had at the Lodge were some of the best I have had anywhere. Our cabin had a phenomenal view of the valley below and mountains beyond. The main room was large and comfortable, as was the bath. We didn't use the pool or the outdoor fire pit; we just didn't have time. We all wished we had had at least one more night at Isunga to enjoy the grounds. We packed a lot into our trip and just didn't allow ourselves enough time to enjoy the places we were staying. Frankly, I didn't envision that the accommodations would be so beautiful that we'd want more time there...but they were and we did! This one very, very minor thing is something to keep in mind if you like to read in bed...you may want to bring a head lamp. The cabins have solar-electric (which I was delighted to see). It provides adequate light for getting around in the room, etc. but the overhead and bedside (battery-operated lights) are a bit dim for reading. That's a very minor thing in my book. I so enjoyed sitting on our private porch overlooking that incredible view with a glass of cold sauvignon blanc in hand. I also loved the tree with the multiple weaver nests and their beautiful singing during the day. At night, there was perfect silence. Four of us traveled together (two couples). Both couples had great cabins. Isunga was the most romantic of the places we stayed in East Africa. It is also close to Kibale so the drive to see the chimps isn't long. I loved every place we stayed in East Africa (four different places across Kenya and Uganda) but this was my favorite. It was so comfortable and beautiful. Clearly, I highly recommend the Isunga Lodge.…
