My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in room 6, which is a semi basement room. The room was clean and had plenty space despite being advertised as one of their smaller rooms. Location of the hotel was incredible, right next door to the Fairmont - the deal they have to use the Fairmont facilities is excellent! The staff are extremely friendly. For value for money this place is perfect!

I had booked another hotel in lower Old Quebec City as it was close to the cruise ship terminal. I decided to cancel that reservation and book this one in Upper Quebec City and I am so glad we did! We had a wonderful view and actually watched our cruise ship arrive in the morning we were to start our cruise. The hotel is the yellow one in the picture and I would highly recommend it.

We stayed in room #1, and it was spectacular. Large, balcony looking out over the river, and virtually no stairs. It cost a little more than the basement or some other rooms, but very worthwhile. I think that the only way to get this room is to call the hotel directly. Breakfast is not included, but for only C$4, you get coffee, yogurt, an apple, and some bread with jam. Location is ideal.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights in room 6 which is a small, characterless, shabby, semi basement room. We chose the semi basement as we were on a tight budget and didn’t intend spending too much time in our room anyway. Having seen the photos online we hadn’t realised that there were water pipes leading to other rooms suspended under the ceiling just above the bed and a couple of boxed in ‘features’ which banged and bumped as early as 5.40 am, presumably when guests took early showers. Thankfully we always travel with earplugs which helped a bit. The decor was grim and dull and the tv was ancient. Also we hadn’t realised that there were no staff on site between 11pm and 7 am although a phone number was given for use in emergencies . However, having said that, the staff were fantastic, the location superb, the breakfast basic ( but free , as we paid in cash) the room wasn’t quite as dark as we had anticipated and the early morning wake up prompted us to get up and out to watch the lovely sunrise over the river! The hotel is also a short walking distance to the cruise port , pier 21 ( unfortunately our cruise ship departed from pier 30 which was a longer but manageable walk) Hotel rooms were in demand in Quebec when we were there as at least three cruise ships were in town plus a huge cycle ride, so at the end of the day we were fortunate to get a room at a price we were willing to pay.

Most of the reviews have covered the drawbacks - lots of stairs, no AC, could use some updates to building and some furniture/TV. The pics online were accurate for our room. We did not experience/agree with some of the other drawbacks. We were on the fourth floor and had no issues with the wifi. The breakfast is modest but for us, it was worth the extra $4/person. Parking is limited to about half a dozen spots. So book in advance. It won't guarantee you a spot as there are more rooms than parking spots but it is worth the extra $25 to be less than 100m away or you can save about $5-7 and walk a bunch. The room did get stuffy during the day. There are fans and windows that open which help. However in the thick of summer, I would not be comfortable in the room we were in. While the bathroom was small, it was private and served its purpose. The upside is our room was very clean. The bed was extremely comfortable. The staff are very helpful, friendly, and responsive. The price for the room was quite reasonable in comparison to other places. The location is awesome and it is situated on a quiet street with almost no traffic or lots of pedestrians making noise all through the night. In the end, we enjoyed our stay here and would return again. With some minor updates and better climate control, this place would be an absolute gem. That being said, it met our criteria - great location, clean, and a comfy bed. In the end, it's not often that you can say you stayed in a place that's 180 years old!
