This fantastic place which I've known for many years is now closed. The management said they could not withstand with impact of the pandemic. They have suggested they might reopen someday in a new form, maybe partly condo, but who really knows. The hotel has visited by many A-list people over the years, and I loved the restaurant as a place to impress visitors.

We had read mixed reviews on this but still went ahead. The staff were excellent. The room was excellent (804). If you are looking for action this would not be a good choice. Saw very few people in the lounge and virtually no-one in the restaurant (in fact we cancelled our reservation at this highly rated restaurant as we did not want to eat alone in the beautiful but empty space) The fitness facility was smaller than our room so if you are looking for a decent well equipped facility this is not it. The major critique we have (which is 100% in the control of the hotel) was the spa. An important reason for our visit was to relax in a winter spa. When we arrived we asked for a spa appointment and were told that it was closed for reconstruction!!! We did see the small massage room next to the exercise room and saw no signs of construction. OK maybe it was going to be done somewhere else in the property. However we should have been told this at the time of the reservation (which was through American Express) and certainly in the numerous reminders we received prior to the trip. We give this 4 stars because of the ambience, the room and the staff but the negatives listed above might have taken off one of the stars.

Iconic Old Montreal hotel in a gorgeous building (originally a bank) with great service. Some rooms are on the small side, drapes do a good job at blocking light, decor is tasteful. Mini-fridge, Nespresso coffee maker, free bottled water with turn-down service, free wi-fi, limited cable TV, luggage rack, dresser, closet w/ safe, robes/slippers, no microwave. Comfortable bed (sheets could be softer), squishy pillows. Nice bathrooms with a full complement of toileteries. Narrow entryway could really use some wall hooks. Unfortunately, the overheated rooms do not respond to lowering the thermostat; the staff will promptly unlock windows, but that doesn't always help depending on airflow/cross drafts. Daily newspaper delivery available, front desk will change currency quickly.

My husband and I stayed on a Monday night for my birthday. We checked in at 2 and I had a facial in the spa at 2:30. The facial was fantastic with great ambiance. My husband had lunch at the bar at XO. He had the club which I enjoyed half of after my facial. Prices reflect the hotel class but portions were good. We booked through AMEX and received a great deal with dining credits, an upgraded room and breakfast which we took as room service. Delicious! A Hollywood movie was on the last day of filming in the hotel and the service elevator was out so the crew was slowing the elevator down but a great memory for our night getting a few glimpses of the setup on the floor of filming. The room was clean, well stocked and staff was excellent and friendly. We dined in XO for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed our meals and cocktails and our server was excellent and attentive. We would definitely return for a special pampered day and night.

Many months I booked a king size bed room through Expedia. I had confirmed it several times prior to my arrival. When I arrived they informed me that they only had queen sized rooms available. They tried to appease me by offering a junior suite with a queen size bed. Reluctantly I accepted. I should have moved out that day. We spent the night and conferred with the concierge regarding the famous Montreal bagels we had heard so much about. He sent us to a cafe down the street that served no bagels. When i called him from the street he apologized and gave me another place steps from where I was. We went and again, No bagels. We ubered to our final destination through trip advisor. We just arrived home to our room, which was blazing hot. They couldn’t turn the heaters off so they opened the windows, so now I have the night noise of downtown to go to sleep to. Would never stay here again, no way, never. Will fight the bill on the credit card.

The architecture of this small hotel is quite spectacular rooms are interesting and well decorated the only problem was the service example:the staff seemed uninterested- at the restaurant, there were 3 waiters chatting with each other while we were waiting for a menu for 15 minutes

This hotel has amazing staff. Everyone my wife and I came in contact with was so pleasant, helpful, and so customer service oriented. They made our experience first class. The hotel itself is small and intimate. Our room was an upgraded suite. The room was beautiful with lots of space, an amazing bathroom, and a real comfy bed. The drain in the main bathroom sink was clogged and wouldn't drain right. I brought this to the attention of the front desk but it was not fixed correctly. If you are looking for lots of natural light and views out the window this is not the hotel. if you are looking for old world charm and the greatest personal service from everyone who works there than this place is great. We booked using AMEX and paid with our platinum Amex card. We got a great hotel rate, an updated room, credit and free breakfast. Best hotel deal for high quality suite in the city IMHO. Special kudos to Yannis and his partner at the concierge desk. Simply the best. Pat the doorman was wonderful as well! We will return!

Large, lovely rooms, impeccable service, beautiful bar and restaurant. Also within blocks of Montreal's world famous Basilica, carriage rides and wonderful dining and shopping. Concierge especially Tara and Pat were extremely helpful. I can’t remember the front desk ( think she was the manager) was also very helpful. Stayed there 2 times in one week and the second room was a suite. It was spectacular. Also a young gentleman(waiter )in the restaurant was outstanding as well. Wanted a special drink and even though they didn’t have my exact request, he went out of his way to make sure it was perfect. The French toast at breakfast was to die for. If return to Montreal would stay here. The staff were excellent

The St. James is an expensive hotel (we paid approx. £300 a night room only) and our room was dark, looked out onto the wall of a next door block and there was insufficient ceiling lighting in the room. The sky was nowhere to be seen. When we got our room the bathroom door did not close, the door handle was falling off and the room heating was not working. Maintenance fixed the first two problems but never got the heating fixed. We were left with having to leave the electric heater in the bathroom on and the bathroom door open. With hindsight, we should have insisted on a room change, but jet lag won out. The beds were comfortable, unfortunately there was no comfortable seating in the room. The free Wi-Fi worked very well and the complimentary newspaper was a nice touch. There were coffee making facilities in the room but why no facilities to make a cup of tea? We breakfasted in the hotel restaurant and the food quality and quantity were good, though again pricey. The best part of the hotel was the concierge service. These guys were really helpful and customer and service oriented – amongst the best we have come across in our travels – well done. It’s a pity the room was not really up to standard
