I am not sure what we expected having read quite a few reviews but it is safe to say we won't be staying here when in Toronto again. There were good and bad points , but the bad outweigh the good. Arriving was tricky as the hotel sign is very faded and felt like you were using a service driveway entrance. The front of the hotel had a strong smell of marijuana the 2 days we were there. Checkin was ok, but had friends who arrived 15 minutes early and had to wait or get a ridiculous early checkin fee. The room was ok and clearly partially renovated with new furniture, but the patio door was very drafty and the carpet looked dated. There was no fridge either bit a saying you could rent one. The pool say wasn't open as the heater broke the day before our arrival which was one of the reasons we picked this hotel. Upon check out the free parking on our reservation confirmation became 11.95 +tax for each night, but it wasn't worth arguing. Overall, the location was great, but the hotel was not in the best shape and wasn't worth the cost to stay there. It is definitely not an 'urban resort' as advertised. There are plenty of other options close by. ..

The following was an email that I sent to the hotel manager shortly after our stay in October, 2022. I did not receive a response. ----- We stayed at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel from Thursday, September 29 to Monday, October 3, 2022. Our booking confirmation number was: CI41A74V With respect, and this is the reason for my email, the property has gone downhill. Considerably. We had that same feeling on our two visits previous to this trip (in September 2020 and in September 2021), but we were attempting to be understanding in the face of Covid restrictions limiting certain offerings for hotels. Unfortunately, the hotel has not only not improved, it has gone further downhill. Your website advertises the property as a "tranquil hotel in North York" and as an "urban resort". Sadly, it is neither. Our booking reservation was for a "double traditional ravine fridge" (no king rooms were available when I booked, so I added in the notes section that if one became available, I'd like to take it instead), which is advertised on your website as "overlooking the ravine." We have stayed in a ravine room before, which actually overlooked the ravine. Most recently, in September, 2021. I was told when we checked-in that there was no upgrade to a king room available as the hotel was full (no problem: we understand that). This time, we got a room overlooking the parking lot (room 255), which is distinctly not the ravine. Here are the rest of our concerns: Smell The hotel smelled. Everywhere. It was of cannabis in the lobby when we first entered. Then the lobby would alternatively smell, over the course of the weekend, of cannabis and something that seemed to have been sprayed to mask the cannabis. The hallway that our room was in smelled of garbage (and sometimes of cannabis). There were frequently bags of garbage lying around. Noise As noted above, our room overlooked the parking lot. That parking lot seemed to "host" various groups of people over the weekend. Those included people who were yelling and screaming late at night and people smoking (pot and cigarettes), which wafted up into the room. We couldn't have the window open at all, which was a shame given the extremely loud HVAC unit in the room. Room Not Overlooking the Ravine + other concerns with the room Had I only been able to book a room overlooking the parking lot, I would have not booked to stay at the hotel. A parking lot is not a ravine (or if you consider it part of the ravine, your website should clearly state that). The heating/cooling was provided by an old-style HVAC unit. Unfortunately, it loudly rattled and hummed like an old-style HVAC unit. See also the point above about not being able to have the window open. So, our "choice" to have a comfortable temperature in the room was to open the window and smell smoke and cannabis or listen to the loud rattle and hum of the HVAC unit. Neither is conducive to sleep, let alone good sleep. There was a drill-like sound that came at odd intervals (including in the middle of the night) and seemed to vibrate from below the floor. It lasted for maybe 10 seconds, but was enough to notice (or wake you up). There was no glassware in the room at all. No water glasses, no wine glasses. Just paper cups. If we wanted to have wine in the room, we were invited to come to the front desk or the bar and have it opened and then we could take it back to our room. I didn't notice anywhere on your website that advised that we should bring our own bottle opener and glass ware. Overall This felt like a budget motel experience at best. I do want to say that every staff member we encountered was very pleasant: none of our concerns related to your individual staff members. For $864.94 for 4 nights' accommodation, we would have expected to at least sleep. As noted above, there were a series of things occurring that made sleep rather a challenge. We explained our concerns about the drilling noise that we experienced in the room and your staff member who checked us out on Monday, October 3 confirmed that there was no work being done near our room. He offered to let someone know about the noise that we experienced and to remove the daily parking charges from our bill. While that was appreciated, it was clear that was all he was empowered to do in the face of our concerns. Are you prepared to adjust our accommodation bill in the face of the above-noted concerns?

We did a one nighter staycation! hung around the pool all day, ate at the patio restaurant, that had excellent service and food. Room was fine, balcony was a definite perk, only problem was a tree a little to the left of our balcony....someone had thrown something into the tree, it actually looked like underwear! So we just kind of didn't look that way. Maybe we should have told someone lol, but then what, some poor employee has to take a ladder to a tree to retrieve underwear?? Wasn't going to be us who called. We also hung out later in the evening at the in-door pool. Its awesome the ceiling. A must see! Anyway, all was great. We would stay there again for sure, with the hope someone got that underwear down from the balconies view haha. It's a great hotel.

Drain in sink would not pop up, so was always water in sink. Asked front desk in morning to fix it. Never got done. Had to brush our teeth into bathtub. Only in for two nights, at checkout asked to speak to manager. Manger … think his name was “Mr.”Potter, would not comp for issue saying he needed to ask staff first and he would call. I knew at that point comp would never happen. While he did call - his research he said was there was a do not disturb sign out. Simply not true. It said make up room. So clearly if his staff did go up. They got as far as seeing a sign on door, but never read it. Should have known what I was dealing with when a hotel manager doesn’t have a business card when asked for one! never have I had a complaint at a hotel dealt with like this. Most hotels I stay at when a guest has a concern, it’s taken care of immediately, excuse I got was if I comped everyone who complains before I checked with staff, we’d be bankrupt. HEY “MR. POTTER”, EVER THINK ABOUT THAT STATEMENT? MAYBE YOU HAVE TOO MANY COMPLAINTS! I knew checking with staff… a complaint becomes unfounded… because guess what staff do when they screw up? They lie ! They lie to keep their job… and continue to screw up. Mr potter…. I’ll tell you something else, a lesson if you will. Your customers are likely to be more honest than your staff. Why not try working with that for a little while - you’ll have less complaints to deal with - promise.

Power was off from 8am -8 pm. Hotel knew this would be off in November 8 but never told us unturned we arrived. I needed to be in room for zoom meeting. Had to leave all day. No power fir heat or lights. Or for my zoom. They told us it was not their fault or their problem. They would not give me the manager’s email. They were rude and lied and said that Expedia was told and lied and said their have no way to contact clients who use Expedia. One of us is a hotel manager. That’s a bold face lie. What a trashy way to behave. Never again. I stayed there for years because it’s convenient location but I had noticed it’s deteriorating. Never again. The manager would’ve even deal with the matter but his behind his staff. Shame on him.

Response from Kevin Porter, General Manager at Toronto Don Valley Hotel & Suites
Responded Nov 12, 2022
Mikey, certainly a challenge that Hydro created for all of us, but it was unfortunately beyond the hotels control and necessary. All guest were Informed prior to arrival and offered an opportunity to cancel without penalty. Those who booked with third parties like Expedia, we unfortunately do not get your contact details (email or phone number) with your booking- (this is not a bold faced lie per your comment) not having these details we reached out to all third parties including Expedia and asked them to inform their customers and to offer free cancellation to anyone that would like to cancel. We also setup a hotspot for guest seeking to use email and for those that needed to host zoom meetings and several guest including myself held several meetings that day. The manager assisting you offered solutions, but in the end it appears you do not feel that was sufficient. I would like to thank you for being a customer and if we can be of service again in the future we would be happy to have you as a return guest.

Hotel is old and run down, beds lumpy. Hair on toilet , tub and sink, Wifi iffy at check in walked thru weed smoke then cigarette smoke. Once at checkin were told no power for 12 hours on the Monday! 9 am to 9 pm . Great when your here gif business and need WIFI and power! .. and it gets dark at 6 pm. Of course no email warning us if this do we could try and relocate before cancellation date passed! Only thing good about this hotel now is the young lady checking us in! She was polite sympathetic and cheerful.

Enjoyed our one night stay here. Check in went well. Used the pool early in the morning My only complaint is the outside noise level was very loud. Bed was very comfortable The information for this hotel says that it has a sauna and a steam room, steam room is in the men’s change room and sauna is in the woman’s change room
