There is not much to write about this hotel. Two positives, staff was great and the pools were nice. As for the rooms they were awful. Hall ways smelt of cigarette smoke, bedroom smelt like cigarette smoke. In addition bathroom were dirty. (Shower pressure was good). I was very excited to leave hotel. I felt the room was mouldy and dirty. Beds were also extremely uncomfortable. (Mattresses need to be changed). I would not recommend this hotel. Avoid at all costs. The bed and cigarette smoke eveywhere was too much (I am not even sure if it is mould or cigarette smoke the smell…) Stay away!

This hotel is the most terrible place we have ever been to. The decor is outdated, the bathroom needs total upgrade and the air conditioning system was not working properly. The only good thing is that the staff knows how bad it is and they try to be nice.

More like a motel than a hotel. Rooms were dated with peeling wallpaper, bathrooms were falling apart. Water was under the tub “bath fitter” so it was squishy and dangerous to step in. Outdoor pool was dirty, full of debris and landscaping around pool was not kept. We were also told by the pool check in towel guy that the pool is never cleaned and he has seen people throw up in it. The indoor pool was hot, humid and hair was everywhere and there was dead bugs laying on the side of pool. Broken glass on the dome covering pool. The hotel rooms had balconies which did not have screen doors so bugs could just fly in the room and it felt like we were being bitten all night long. My kids were sick the next day, probably from the pool.

I stay at this hotel annually when I go into Toronto to attend the Caribbean Carnival Festival. A short drive to the down town core. Great value for the rate they charge. Amenities always in good order

A $40 charge for checking in early be aware at 2;45pm though can check in early for no fee Parking costs $27 for two nights Disappointed they didn’t mention indoor pool closed for construction on website Very disappointed in outdoor pool. They take your bag from you and store it in a deck box. You can’t have access to your personal stuff unless you take it all out- or walk to the deck box to get it- it is so stupid. Not very secure either as anyone could grab your bag and you wouldn’t know And the deck box they have falls apart every time the pool monitor opens it! Spend some quality money on a system They won’t let you come in with drinks or a water bottle. It is very tacky. Room was clean

Exiting the elevator with my husband to check out today (15 January 2022) after an overnight stay, there was a woman sobbing, slumped in a heap on the stairs next to the reception desk. I asked her if she needed any help or if I could do anything for her. A male member of staff dressed in a blazer was then incredibly rude and dismissive when I asked if there was a side room out of the public gaze where she could be in a quiet space so all the guests wouldn’t see her. I had previously said to the woman that I would stay with her if that would make her feel better. The staff member was aggressive and told me that it was “none of my business” and “imagine if every one of the 500 guests stopped”. At this stage the woman was still crying hysterically. I left the scene after being rebuked by the staff member, feeling upset by his rudeness and the fact that the woman was still crying on the stairs. As we had breakfast, everyone who had exited or entered the elevators by the reception had seen the woman in distress. It was check-out time so there were guests settling their bills at the reception counter. The police arrived soon after, followed by four EMS personnel, who after a while wrapped her in an orange blanket and steered her out the hotel on a gurney. Two further policemen arrived. Eventually a barefoot man, wearing jeans, and buttoning up his blue shirt came into the reception area and spoke to the staff member. The police later followed him upstairs again. The police departed the hotel just before we left for an appointment. I couldn’t believe I had been treated so shoddily by a staff member of hotel where we were guests and my husband had brought me for our three year anniversary. This staff member was contemptuous and demeaning and certainly didn’t seem to care about the state the sobbing woman was in. Whatever the case, he could have afforded her some privacy and he certainly could have been polite to me. After this incident, neither my husband nor I will ever be booking into the Toronto Don Valley suites. Wherever that woman had been, I would have stopped to ask her if she needed help. She was obviously in a state of hysteria and not okay. If I had been in her position, I would have been grateful if someone had stopped because they care how I was. Clearly, there’s a lot of work to be done in respect showing compassion and empathy to others. I do not recommend this hotel at all.

Response from Kevin Porter, General Manager at Toronto Don Valley Hotel & Suites
Responded Jun 17, 2022
Good Morning, Michelle, and thank you for your feedback. You may not have noticed but plain clothes police were already on scene dealing with and assessing the woman in distress. It was their decision not to move the female in distress and to keep a small distance and await paramedics and uniformed police from the distress unit to take the next steps. They were concerned of escalating her stress level and therefore attempted to move you along as you were attempting to engage in conversation with her. My apologies if this was not well delivered, but do understand that all experts were engaged with dealing with the women in distress, and just needed to keep the area clear for many reasons. Thank you again for your feedback, and we trust you were able to enjoy your anniversary.

Very disappointed with crumbs and condom wrappers on the floor when we showed up. We knew the hotel would be a little dated but we weren’t expecting anything like this. Extremely disgusted and very disappointed with this experience so far.

I’ve booked a room on Booking.com as we were coming into town for a concert and this hotel was in a good proximity to the Danforth. I called the hotel and booked an extra night. We arrived around 1:30 in the afternoon and asked if we could check into our room and was told I had to pay $40 to do so. Everything went downhill from there. When we ride in the lobby we were greeted by homeless people. There was a crack addict woman and husband who was harassing the front desk because she didn’t receive a wake up call. She had cut her pyjama pants mid-calf and you could see track marks all along her ankles. She was spun out. When I expressed my concern as to the type of people loitering in the hotel lobby, the woman at the desk Actually told me that this woman and her husband had just sold their house and they were staying in the hotel overnight so that they can move into the new place. What are the most laughable excuses I think I’ve ever heard. My daughter google the hotel and was surprised to learn that the government has been housing homeless people at the hotel. Not a place I want to stay myself with my daughter! One of the reasons we practice hotel was for the indoor pool which was being renovated and was not accessible. Some thing that the hotel did not advertise on their sitenor did booking.com. We were told we could use the outdoor pool but it was raining so really not an option. Hotel looks nothing like the photos on Booking.com or any of the other websites. Our “deluxe” room was supposed to have a fridge and a microwave and it did not. So I requested to move to another room which dead and they wanted to charge me $30 more!! They moved us to another room which smelled bad, the beds were not made properly, and the headboards had scratches all over them. I’ve includes some photos. We immediately returned to the front desk and demanded to check out. I’m still trying to get my money back from Booking.com but will escalate this as far as I have to in order for them to return my money as this hotel is disgusting. To have homeless people and crack addicts roaming around is inexcusable. This is not a family hotel. I recommend you stay far away!! Ironically the hotel has been removed from Booking.com. So I’m not sure if that says some thing or not. The front desk staff seemed nice — But honestly I feel bad that they have to deal with this kind of crap at work.

Response from Kevin Porter, General Manager at Toronto Don Valley Hotel & Suites
Responded Jun 9, 2022
Hi Joanne, and thank you for your feedback. However, I feel compelled to respond with some clarification, especially as it relates to DISPLACED GUEST. Certainly the city of Toronto, like all cities are dealing with a displacement issue relates to the pandemic, and they have taken over some hotels in the city to facilitate this displacement. THE TORONTO DON VALLEY HOTEL IS NOT ONE OF THOSE HOTELS. Those hotels that chose to deal with displaced guest are not open for other guest to book and are fully closed for displacement. The Toronto Don Valley Hotel has been a family hotel for the last 50 years and continues to be a family friendly hotel. We have not seen this HOMELESS issue you mention in our hotel, but we will share that there are certainly some societal challenges that have developed in society through a very challenging time for a lot of ppl. Again we thank you for your feedback, and it is our wish to be able to host you again in the future.

I stayed here with a friend over the long weekend in May, 2022. The location is excellent with many amenities nearby and within the hotel itself. The food in the restraunt was fantastic and the room was very clean. We did have an issue that was personally attended to by Mr. Porter, the GM, and the front desk staff were courteous and very helpful. I will be staying here again for any further trips to Toronto and would highly recommend to family and friends.
