Wanted to stay in Sudbury for the science museum, but the choice of B&Bs seemed limited. However, Southbay was convenient and offered what we needed. Our hosts Jose and Brenda provided lots of interesting discussions, and the breakfasts a real treat. Unfortunately the house had been closed up for a few weeks before we arrived, so it had that unaired atmosphere. Brenda has a property on Manitoulin Island as well, so perhaps they are a bit stretched? Apart from that, we really enjoyed our stay. For travellers from the UK, it was a disadvantage that payment is cash only.

We booked this trip as a getaway for my 41st birthday. Looking for something romantic and secluded, with activities close by. It ended up being the perfect spot. Brenda was a great host, she made us feel very welcome. Our room had a huge king size bed, two person jacuzzi tub and my favourite place was the solarium sun room, off our suite. It was quite peaceful sitting out there at night, with a glass of wine and some candles lit, listening to the loons on the water. We stayed for two nights. Each morning the breakfast was excellent and filling. It was the first time I had ever tried a fig. There was always a yogurt fruit dish as well as a hot breakfast. Great coffee! I was exceptionally pleased with the availability of a canoe, which most places don't have. The weather cooperated with us for the two days and we were able to take advantage of a walk on the boardwalk and got for a peaceful canoe ride across the lake. I would definitely return to Southbay as my place to stay the next time we visit Sudbury.

We booked in may for sept stay really looking forward to the b&b real canada experience, however this owner has more than one property and on our arrival presumed we were booked into her other property 2hrs away! Considering we had just driven from Niagara on the lakes we were hardly likely to go further out of our way. The owner had only given us one address which we arrived at to then say we were disappointed & frustrated is an understatement! Her off manner that she gave as if it was our problem and that we would have to find alternative accommodation was not what we would expect when booked so long ahead. Be ware!!

I spent three nights at the Southbay Guesthouse in Sudbury while on a business trip to meet with a client in the area. The property is located well off the beaten path, not far from the Laurentian University campus, St. Joseph's Long Term Care and the new Medical Centre. Also close by is Science North, if you are interested in a science museum focused on the North. Jose, the proprietor of the Southbay Guesthouse, is warm and welcoming, with lots of interesting stories to tell. The house is located on the shore of Ramsay Lake, right in Sudbury. The guest rooms are located on the main floor, and the smaller room that I stayed in had its own walkout onto a deck overlooking the lake. There is a path down to the dock on the water, and there is a canoe, a rowboat and a paddle boat that you can take out if you like. The lake is crystal clear, and in warm weather the swimming would be good. I took the canoe out solo and paddled around South Bay and Bryn Heulog Island. There are some huge homes on the bay that make for interesting sights to see. The bay has a few loons, and at twilight and in the early morning you can hear their distinctive calls across the lake. The Guesthouse is close to the Ramsay Lake conservation area, which has plenty of nature trails that you can enjoy if you have the time. In the winter, these same trails are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. You can fish in Ramsay Lake as well, but don't forget to get your fishing license before you go! Jose serves up a wonderful breakfast, and is happy to oblige your tastes. Compared to anything you would get at a chain hotel, the breakfasts can't be beat. Breakfast conversation was always interesting. About the only downside to the Guesthouse is the relative distance to restaurants for dinner. Most of the restaurants in Sudbury are in the old downtown area, about a 10 minute drive. Not too far, but far enough that you are unlikely to want to walk. If you brought a bicycle it wouldn't be a bad bike ride into downtown. The old downtown area was pretty sketchy for a long time, but the city is cleaning up the area, and new and interesting restaurants and businesses are moving into the area. Probably the biggest challenge downtown is finding parking along the street. Overall, this was a great place to stay, and I would highly recommend it!
