The location was great as it was in the middle of downtown Sydney. The staff was really friendly and helpful. They are very accommodating as they allowed us to drop off our bags early in the morning before we were able to check-in. They gave us some suggestions on places to eat. The hotel is a little old but it... More

This was not my first choice, but my companion had stayed there before, and he strongly recommended it. The hotel was delightful...half the price of the more modern ones, clean, huge rooms, wonderful location and the best hospitality I've ever experienced.

This hotel never has made up its mind whether it's the Royal or the Royale, and from the outside the doorway looks uninviting, and the foyer looks worse - as if it's going to be scuzzy. It absolutely isn't. It's old-fashioned, yes, but the rooms have old-fashioned high standards: good solid redwood carpentry, high quality linen, excellent beds, individually acquired... More

Lovely owner, kind , generous & very personable.Good location, comfortable & clean.Stayed there 20 years ago.Same friendly service from the owner.Had some concern with the maintenance guy. He was asking too many personal questions. My last Sat. morning there he was acting very strange, had dark sun glasses on & ranting about Middle Eastern people. At the same time he was punching... If I was going to Sydney , if I couldn't stay at the Royale Hotel I would just stay home. Love the hospitality we receive there and the people. Just like being home , its all about comfort. Everyone is happy , people you have never met are sitting with the owners having a nice chat and you feel no... More

We tried the Holiday Inn but it was full and we were very glad that it was because we found the Royale opposite. A charming, old fashioned hotel, run by a lovely couple and their dog. Large rooms and bathroom, excellent value and very conveniently located. We travelled from Wales looking for Cape Breton folk music and the owner directed... More

This Hotel was a true find. After checking out the Holiday Inn across the street, we were glad they were full. Very old quaint Hotel with huge bathroom, antiques galore in your room, the most comfortable bed and the friendliest couple who run it. Lucky the dog is a big 'love'. We only stayed one night but would gladly have... More

I booked a reservation for the Royal Hotel via the Nova Scotia tourism website on June 25, 2013, for a two-night stay with an arrival date of August 11, 2013. After travelling around mainland Nova Scotia for a week, my friend and I drove across to Cape Breton and into Sydney. We arrived at the hotel around 7 pm, and... More

Just dropped by and Bert offered us a private room on second floor with bathroom. No a/c but still airy, use of table fan at night. Each bedroom has its own wash basin. Good size bathroom. Since this hotel is a "collector's item" by itself, so if do not mind the little squeaks, this is a very homey lodging. Clean... More

Cannot say enough about the friendliness and welcoming nature of the hosts. The whole place can be summed up with the word Character. You will get it in the furniture, personalities, and guests that reside in the hotel. I also have to say, brand new beds made for the best night sleep we have had in Cape Breton. They also... More
