First off, nothing in Yellowknife is inexpensive, but the Polar Suite is probably the best value in town that is not a dive or in a rough location. It is half a block from a supermarket and the main road (Franklin Ave) in town and right downtown. It is an older, converted apartment block, with some residents and some rentals. rooms are definitely dated with a real 80's feel to them, so don't get your hopes too high for a hotel/motel experience. But because it was an apartment, the inside space is huge - living room, bedroom and huge fully equipped kitchen, with random condiments left by previous guests. Think soy sauce, sugar, tea, cooking oil, etc - which may or may not come in handy, but you could easily cook up a Christmas dinner in here! The manager will be in contact with you to give you instructions and how to arrange to get in - remember, as an old apt. block there is no "lobby" to walk into. But it worked without issue. I was able to park my rental car (very tightly) in the back. Judging by the Japanese signage and the condiments, this place is very popular with during the Northern Lights viewing season and the tour buses park just around the corner on Franklin avenue. There is an A & W close by, and the Boston Pizza sports bar 1 or 2 blocks away, which is very well run.…
It's a clean, lovely accommodation and big enough for 4 of us. We stayed in comfortable rooms and had great sleep. The location is convenience to go to market (5 min walk) and down town. The host and manager are really nice! Highly recommended to traveler. It's definitely worthy to stay here!
I recommend this place. I was staying for 3 nights with 3 friends. They came up to the airport for giving us a key. All information about there and Yellowknife(including city cab's phone number) were written on a paper. The house was really warm (though it was -25 degree outside) and clean. And full-equipped including oven, microwaves, toast machine and etc. It was just like home. Have 2 single beds and one double sofa bed. The bathroom was also so clean and everything was there! Even a body lotion! Furthermore, a big supermarket(name is independent market...?) is just across a road. It is really close. We were so happy that we do not have to endure the cold weather for grocery.
We had a great stay at Yellowknife Polar Suite, which was equipped with good use of a kitchenette, lounge, bathroom and bedroom. The guest room was only a short walk to the main shops and restaurants. We would recommend this place.
