Hotel's Favorite
About 20 min from the airport. Great shuttle service. Beds were comfy, the rooms and hotel were clean and well maintained. Convenient dining (with a good view of outside) and lounge, with great food. located right in the hotel. Staff was accommodating and informative. Also, would stay there again.
I think the only thing missing, was a little store for toiletries and snacks.

As soon as the mandatory self-isolation rules lifted for non-essential travel I immediately booked a 3 night stay in Yellowknife as it has been on my 'to see' list for 4 years. I had previously researched the area and this hotel was where I intended to stay since it was central, had a restaurant and lounge, and walking distance to the Prince of Whales Cultural Centre, the Legislative building, groceries, and hiking trails.
If you're a tourist like myself or you have spare time to site see in between conferences this hotel is a great place to unwind and/or book a few outdoor activities. Decor wise, it is very warm and casual, and! Do expect yet another taxidermied Polar Bear in the lobby for that quintessential "I was up North" selfie (despite them not actually living anywhere near Yellowknife, lol).
Food is pretty good for pub grub in the evening, though breakfast at the restaurant has a bit of room for improvement for individual items. The breakfast buffet is the best choice with a fair selection given the latitude.
The Trapline Lounge was by far my favourite place in the hotel other than the king sized bed I slept on. They have a couple of the local NWT Brewing co. beers on tap and if you're not a beer drinker they have cider and some decent wines. The staff make you feel like a local.
If you need to get around the hotel reception will happily call you a cab. They were very helpful and accomodating during my stay.
In terms of cleanliness, I was told from a local to expect 'northern standards,' so I wasn't too picky, however the headboards to the bed should be wiped down, if you do not wish to acknowledge what previously occured in that spot bring yourself some sanitizing wipes if they appear less than shiny. Other than that, there were plenty of clean towels and the fridge and coffee maker were clean.
I will add that I was very warm during my stay, the room tempature does not go below 18.5 C and if you have a Southwestern facing window (Frame Lake view), the heat can be intense if you don't close the drapes during the day. I normally run hot, so even with the drapes closed I could feel the heat.
In sum, do stay at this hotel. It's the best in town especially for sight seers.
Bonus travel tip - Everything is closed on Sunday other than the cultural centre, so if you're planning a visit, try avoiding Sundays, unless you like art, history, and hikes.

We were on a group tour of 24 people and arrived a little early for check in. Some of our rooms were available immediately, for those without the hotel had a locked room where they could store their luggage until the room was ready. The few problems encountered (AC, TV malfunctions and king instead of 2 beds) were quickly resolved by staff through our tour director. The hotel is in a great location for walking to downtown, old town, and to some hiking trails. For breakfast our group was given a private room off the main dining room and we had the breakfast buffet. The first night in Yellowknife dinner was not included on our tour so we ate in the hotel restaurant - we felt the mains were a bit expensive so had soup and salad. Our group dinner on the 3rd night of our stay was a wonderful buffet in a banquet hall. We found our room to be clean and the view of Frame Lake was spectacular!

When I arrived at the hotel, 2 doubtful characters asked for money and cigarettes, giving me an uneasy feeling about this hotel. On checking in, I mentioned to the South Asian lady desk clerk about my encounter but she responded with a “Care less” attitude. I was surprised that a hotel of this size did not have hotel security or a lobby manager to monitor the area.
This hotel is falsely advertising their COVID’s cleaning practice and protocols, this hotel did not practice or enforce social distancing rules as they allowed people gathering in the lobby. During my stay, I hardly saw any cleaning crew in the public areas and on the second floor.
I was checked into the second floor, the room I was assigned was dated and not clean, the garbage can was not emptied and food from previous guest was still in the fridge. This made me doubt the cleaning standard of this hotel. I was given a room change after my complaint, but they had lots of drunk doubtful characters standing outside the hotel and wandering the floor I stayed on. Hotel should consider using security guards to patrol the property, as elevators of this property are not restricted by room cards for guests’ safety. Guest’s Safety, staff’s attitude and cleanliness are the major factors that I will not recommend to anyone!
Unfortunately, this seems a nice full-service hotel, but is definitely poorly and unprofessionally managed.

When we arrived at the hotel, driveway and parking lot full of garbage and cigarette butts, quite a number of sketchy people hanging at the front entrance of the hotel, not a good first impression, shows hotel management does not care.
The check in process was quite slow and not efficient, the front desk clerk - a tall slim Asian lady nice enough but difficult to understand, had such a strong accent but the worst part was the guest room assigned to us had a dirty towel in the bathroom, hair in the tub, and blood stain on the bed sheet. I wonder if the housekeeper had really cleaned the room thoroughly especially during this time COVD-19??
When I went downstairs to ask to speak to the general manager, again same clerk could barely understand what she tried to communicate, her respond was that general manger did not handle complaints! This is the first time I have encountered a general manager of a hotel that does not want to speak to an unhappy guest.
Overall, the hotel from appearance, cleanliness (especially during COVID-19) and guest relationship I feel this hotel is poorly managed. This will be my last time staying at this hotel even if the hotel would offer me a free stay for my next stay.

This hotel is very dirty, parking lot, lobby and even guest room, I do understand that most hotels are not profitable during COVID, but as a responsible business, the owner should put their guests’ safety first. A few times when I walked through the hallway, I noticed the cleaning staff not wearing face masks. When I tried to express my concern to the manager in housekeeping and front desk, they seemed not to understand what I was talking about, it seems communication in English is a problem at this hotel.
I would suggest staying away from this hotel until COVID is over! NT Health Service should consider shutting down this hotel and check on their cleaning and disinfecting procedures as per Northwest Territories’ protocol on COVID until all protocols are followed meticulously.

I'd heard good things about this hotel, so I booked it instead of my usual hotel for one night between flights. The exterior is attractive and both restaurant and lounge appear pretty high end, but appearances can be deceiving.
The front desk staff member who checked me in was unfriendly and unhelpful. I had booked a king room but was assigned a double queen because I was travelling with my cat. The room itself was pretty clean but shabby. The bathroom counter was worn. The cold water in the sink dripped unless I turned the handle VERY tightly. The bed sunk and creaked slightly. The room was cold and did not warm up very much even though I cranked the heat. I'm from Nunavut so I'm used to the cold but also cannot stand a warm bedroom so if *I* felt cold it was cold!
One of the main reasons I booked the Explorer was because I wanted to eat in the hotel and have an early night before my early flight the next morning. The lounge was very busy so I didn't even try. I headed to the restaurant, waited a few minutes then when the host appeared he asked if I was meeting someone. When I replied that I was alone, he looked at me and after a long pause said he'd try to fit me in in about 30 minutes. I have no problem waiting, but was irritated by his judgemental attitude, and hungry after travelling, so I decided to go back to my room to order room service instead. I called at least six times over about 20 minutes but no one answered. At this point, I was so frustrated I just decided to order in from a local restaurant. After travelling down from a northern community without a decent restaurant, I had been looking forward to having a nice meal in an actual restaurant. Instead, I ended up eating from a take out container on my creaky bed. I appreciate that both hotel restaurant and lounge are popular with locals, but surely a hotel guest should be able to eat at the hotel too.
When I tried to shower at 5am, I had about 90 seconds of tepid water before it turned cold and I had to get out. When I checked out, I advised the counter staff (who was slightly more friendly than the staff the night before) there was no hot water and he simply blamed the city for having problems with the water supply.
Overall, my experience was disappointing from the quality of the room, to the poor attitude of staff, and unavailability of food service in the hotel. There aren't many hotels in Yellowknife, but I doubt I'll give the Explorer a second chance.

I wasn't sure what to expect form the Explorer - Yellowknife being a bit remote I didn't expect five star luxury, but I did go in with expectations of a solid 4-star experience and the Explorer did an excellent job.
Friendly staff, comfortable rooms with great climate control, clean, and very walkable to the Yellowknife city centre. The hotel was also willing to let me ship a box ahead and hold it for me for over a week until my arrival which made it very easy to arrive in the arctic from a longer trip without having to lug lots of extra clothing around.
Free airport shuttle as well.

Upon arrival at the hotel, I was informed that my booking, which had been paid in full months before through a travel agent, had been cancelled. This took an hour to sort out and was apparently due to the Canadian supplier. My travel agent in Australia is investigating.
The shower in my room was very difficult to navigate and the toilet was blocked. One of the desk staff tried to show me how to work the shower and said that maintenance would attend to the toilet at 8am next morning. I was told that if I needed to use the toilet during the night the person at the desk could unlock the toilet in the foyer. At midnight I went downstairs and spoke with William at the desk. William was like a fairy godmother. He came with me to the room, explained clearly how to work the shower, I made notes and we practised (he said he does this with other guests). He then fetched a clean plunger and, gloved, cleared the toilet which functioned perfectly from then on. By this stage it was 2 am and I was very hungry. William then went to the kitchen and made a delicious sandwich and presented this with a yoghurt and apple juice. In the next days, although I could easily work the shower, the water temperature changed without any manual adjustment. William said he would advise the boiler room.
I would definitely expect more from a hotel at that price.
I will also remember William's exceptional customer service.

When I stayed at this hotel, the staff had horrible customer service skills. Most of them were rude and condescending, when I tried to place a room order, the restaurant rarely answered the phone, with voicemail messages left unreturned in excess of 1 hour. When I brought this to the attention of the Front Desk, they said to call the restaurant again (I called the restaurant to leave another voicemail).
When I checked out of this hotel, I was expecting a parcel, but when I brought this to the attention of the Front Desk, a majority of them did not note my request. I called the Front Desk on daily basis, only to provide my information again, including my phone number which is frustrating, a lot of the staff simply did not care nor followed up with my request. This hotel lacks hospitality, and simply has no respect or appreciation for its guest. I will never stay at this hotel again. #horribleservice #nocustomerservice

On behalf of the food and beverage team I would like to apologize for the lack of service you have received. During these difficult times we have limited our hours of operation from 8 am to 8 pm. We do schedule one employee to cover the room service orders and they should have returned your call if left on voicemail during these operating hours. Thank you for passing on your feedback since it reminds us that we can always do better. Jean Paquete F@B Manager
