Very laid back small hostel on the eastern end of downtown. Situated in a street of jelly bean houses, it couldn't be better located. Small dormitories with shared facilities, a common room like a family sitting room and a small kitchen give it a homely feel. Great mix of guests of all ages. Met a Welsh man of 67 who... More

I was pretty willing to overlook the not so clean rooms and bathrooms and jam packed fridge- it is a hostel after all- but they overbooked and put a mattress on the floor of our room. Not only did everyone in that room pay for a "4 person" room, there is NO space in it now, the only mirror and... More

The staff is mainly constituted by "volunteers" that sometimes don't have much idea about their job. The ambience is friendly and there is always someone around for a chat and a beer. The downside are the common spaces that are too small.

This hostel was a just great! Clean, quiet, spacious, with a welcoming lounge to relax in, and great kitchen and bathroom facilities. They provided a parking pass, too! It was accommodating, well-organized, and made our stay very smooth and effortless! The welcoming staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, telling us of local activities, places to go, how to get there,... More

Reading other reviews, I was surprised at the number of negative reviews. I have been to a variety of hostels in Europe and Canada, and this hostel is among my favourites. Sure, there was the odd employee who wasn't the most inviting, but the majority were super helpful, friendly and inclusive. My friend and I stayed there between hiking ventures,... More

For the price and the location this hostel was tolerable. I stayed in a shared dorm in 1 of 4 beds. The bed was comfortable enough and with only 3 others in the room sounds and disruptions at night were kept to a minimum. Only 2 shared bathrooms in the whole place but were kept pretty clean. Compared to other... More

Stayed here for 2 nights. This hostel was cramped, scruffy and dirty. Having filled the 'TV room' with beds, and having 'the office' in the lounge which was locked at 9pm the only other place to sit was on 1 of 4 hard wooden chairs in the cramped and dirty kitchen in the basement. Only 1 fridge/freezer, mostly taken up... More

Quite honestly after staying at hostels across the world I was shocked to find this one to be the worst I have ever stayed in. Upon arrival we were greeted by an extremely rude and uncooperative staff member and told at 6pm that our room wasn't ready yet. We had booked 2 private rooms for 5 people. The Houston bed... More

I've met great people there, BUT the hostel rooms and washrooms were not clean at all and their long-stay guests (of course not all of them) were weird. In my room for example, a guest took off the bedding which had blood and other unidentifed stuff on it and just left it on the floor. Floor was not clean. I've... More

I stayed two nights last week at City Hostel, 8 Gower Street, in St. John's. Private room w/private bath, facing the back of the building and overlooking the neighbors' gardens, was $58 CAD and an excellent choice for my travel dollars. Free internet, free laundry facilities, common kitchen area, located on a quiet steet at the intersection of Gower and... More
