VNHS opened Skwachàys Lodge, the Urban Indigenous Fair-Trade Gallery, and the Artists in Residence Program in June of 2012. The former Pender Hotel was transformed from a three-and-a-half-story derelict SRO hotel to a unique Indigenous social enterprise that combines a boutique hotel with a street-level art gallery, that supports on-site housing and studio space for 24 Indigenous artists. VNHS identified the vulnerability of many urban Indigenous artists – artists in need of housing, artists who for various reasons are not able to properly represent and market themselves or their work. Often these artists are commercially exploited through a long established ‘street or underground’ market that takes advantage of their vulnerability. They try to live ‘off their work’ by selling on the street or in the bars or through the commercial dealer network that purchases original, gallery quality art for, at times, only five or ten cents on the dollar. By creating a live/work supportive complex with a built-in gallery and community production space, VNHS took a lead role in addressing the social and economic inequities that Indigenous artists can face. The Artists in Residence Program is a unique and life-changing housing program for practicing Indigenous artists. The program includes very affordable housing in clean, unfurnished bachelor suites, 24/7 access to shared artist workshops, and participation in programming opportunities for personal and professional development that help artists develop their craft and move into the next phase of their careers. A 3-year residency in the program is dependent on successful program participation and the achievement of self-defined career goals. Emerging, mid-career, and senior artists are welcome to apply. To date we have had over 110 Indigenous artists complete the program. The Lodge, the Urban Indigenous Fair-Trade Gallery and production space are operated as a self-sustaining social enterprise. Artists are paid a fair price for their work. The model follows the established practices found in the art world. Generally an artist receives between 30%-60% of the retail price depending on the artist’s reputation and the cost that is underwritten by the gallery (framing, marketing and promotional expenses.) In short, when a guest spends their overnight travel dollars at the Skwachàys Lodge there is a social impact – people are housed. When a guest, a member of the community or a company purchases authentic Indigenous art at the Fair Trade Gallery, there is a social impact – a simple purchase fights cultural misappropriation and ensures that Indigenous artists are paid fairly for their work. Cultural tourism is one of the fastest growing segments of the tourism sector and there is absolutely a place for our urban Indigenous artists to participate in this industry as a means of reclaiming their lives and independence.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed one night at the Lodge and couldn’t be anymore impressed. From our first interaction with Rick the concierge who was welcoming and very friendly to the lovely complimentary breakfast the next morning. It was all a great experience.
We were given a suite which was well equipped, the beds were very comfortable, the room was quiet and beautifully decorated with indigenous art work. In fact the whole hotel has amazing art work everywhere, worth the time to look at it and take it all in.
The breakfast was one of the best complimentary ones we’ve had with a great selection of baking, juices and yogurts etc.
Especially nice about this hotel is their use of products from indigenously owned companies.
It is in a rough part of town but we did not feel threatened or unsafe and the lodge is safe and secure. It’s also in a great location for walking to various tourist attractions, just turn right out of the hotel, turning left might not be a great experience.
Well done Skwachays! A great example of a well run indigenous business.

Rick provided an amazing stay at for us every step of the way at Skwachàys Lodge! We were upgraded to the king suite where the bed was very comfortable and so quiet as the windows overlook the courtyard. The sage and mint body wash was amazing. The location is within walking distance to everything in the downtown core, including excellent restaurants, Chinatown and eclectic urban life.
Rick was very attentive about the current COVID restrictions and made us feel at ease for our whole stay. Also, the proceeds for our lodging go to the indigenous artists in residence which is a fantastic initiative.
Overall, a really cool, creative, and welcoming stay in Vancouver. We'll definitely be recommending Skwachàys Lodge to our family and friends! Thanks so much Rick for a fabulous stay!

Thank you for taking the time to review your great stay at Skwachays Lodge. Rick and the team at our Lodge are exceptional in all ways. You've really noted several of our Skwachays high points - our beautiful and unique art themed suites, our amenities, our easy walking neighborhood and the many local features and for sure, your very safe stay with us here during this COVID time, And we are particularly proud of our Indigenous Artists in Residence social enterprise program where we support upcoming artists in developing their career. We really appreciate all your feedback and hope that you'll come back soon.

Visited Skwachays in January and it was a pleasant quaint boutique hotel. Very clean and accommodating. Only hiccup was after the first night staying there the housekeeping was not up to snuff and did not collect dirty towels or replenish them or empty out the wastebaskets. The bed had not been sufficiently made. Front desk manager Rick E. was a great help bringing up fresh towels and in room coffee and making a note of things. The rest of our five night stay was great. Located in kind of a rough area next to the old Chinatown it's centralized to Downtown Vancouver and a stone's throw to all the sights and attractions.

I stayed 3 nights in this gorgeous boutique hotel. It was like sleeping in an art gallery. Each room is tastefully themed with indigenous pieces of art and fabrics. The room was well portioned and very clean as was the bathroom. There was a fridge and jug and also a balcony which looked over a central courtyard. You have to enter the buiding through the actual gallery, and there is a welcome room attached which serves breakfast and complimentary tea and coffee throughout the day.The reception staff were very polite and friendly.Close to both Gastown and Chinatown and a 4min walk to Stadium Chinatown metro station.Lots of less fortunate people around the hotel on the street but they were all minding their own business and not threatening in any way.Would definitely stay here again.

We have made Skwachays Lodge our home-away-from-home whenever we visit Vancouver. Each of the boutique rooms is First Nation themed like the Poet's Suite, Moon Suite, The Hat Suite, and several others. The decor in each room reflects the reverence First Nation has for these icons. The art gallery in the lobby is filled with art reflecting First Nations honors and traditions.
Important reminder for travelers driving and wish secure parking. The Lodge offers secure underground parking for a modest additional charge. However, I strongly advice using a smaller car as parking is limited, and tight.
As in every major city, Vancouver is not immune to the reality of the homeless. The Lodge is near the mouth of Chinatown, which is also a place where some of the homeless reside. It's a fact of life. We have shown them nothing but respect when we visit and have had no problems.
In summary, Skwachays Lodge is an incredible hotel, with amazing staff, located just a few blocks from Chinatown, and Gastown, with galleries, restaurants, bars, pubs, and an amazing nightlife. I highly recommend you stay.

UPDATE: This is my third time at Skwachàys Lodge (and my mother’s second time), my first return since the pandemic . I was last there in January 2020.
Skwachàys Lodge is a wonderful boutique hotel. Everything below from 2019 is still true, but due to COVID, there is no breakfast buffet. The room my mother and I were in this time was designed by artist Corrine Hunt (Kwakwaka’wakw/Tlingit).
It was great to see Rick, the Guest Experience Coordinator, again. Such a wealth of knowledge.
We hope to return next January or February!

My mother and I had a great time staying at Skwachàys Lodge in 2019. The hotel, unique and beautiful, had its own personality as a result of the incredible art that was everywhere. The art by indigenous artists was a visual manifestation of Vancouver’s —and Canada’s — indigenous past, present, and future.
Our loft room was attractive with comfortable beds and beautiful art. I slept so very well. Not only did the natural toiletries smell wonderful, the products did not irritate my skin.
Rooms have microwaves, coffee makers, and refrigerators. If the weather had not been so unusually pleasant for winter, I can imagine our spending a lot of time in our room and around the hotel without feeling deprived, especially drinking the wonderful coffee that was available.
Breakfast is provided in the morning in the common area. It is on the light side, but the bannock, yoghurt, fruit, pastries, and quiches with coffee are enough to get you on your way until lunch.
Rick, the Guest Experience Coordinator, took good care of us. I noticed how he took such personal pride assisting hotel guests in getting to know both Vancouver in general and the surrounding neighborhood in particular. Whether it be trying out a new Moroccan restaurant or going to a play, Rick was in on almost everything that was being offered that weekend. He was a real character!
Our regular hotel nearby was closed over the month of January to begin renovations; that’s why we ended up going to Skwachàys for the first time. It won’t be the last, not if Mom has anything to do with it! This indigenous run hotel is really a special place to be.

We spent 4 days in Vancouver on vacation. The location makes it easy to walk to or drive to many attractions in Vancouver. The staff are friendly and helpful. I loved reading the story behind the decor in our rooms and a bit of history of each of the artists who decorated them. The gift shop is beautiful and we found a few things to bring home as gifts. The neighbourhood is a education. The hotel borders on Gastown which has a young and vibrant vibe. Chinatown is also just outside the door as is the downtown East side. We slept comfortably and would happily book another trip to Vancouver and stay at this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Skwachays Lodge. It is great that you really enjoyed your stay with us at our special boutique hotel, with our indigenous themed and decorated rooms, as well as our gallery well stocked with art and giftware. We are in a thriving, diverse and vibrant community, that can have challenges, just like many large cities, but, as you mentioned we are so close to Chinatown, Gastown and the local stadiums all of which make it an ideal location We really appreciate your feedback and hope that you'll come back soon

This hotel is so central to everything in Vancouver. Each room is designed by a different First Nations artist and the cost of your stay contributes to the work of employing artists in residence. The rooms are beautiful. The people are lovely. The position is first rate. I thoroughly recommend this hotel to all travellers keen to support First Nations peoples and who want a divine experience of Vancouver. I’m coming back!

I assume not very many people know of this unique small hotel, the cab driver from the airport had no clue of the name or where it was & he was a local, but we found the place by it's address. Note, cab from airport was $40.00 CAD kind of expensive. Check in was quick, the nice guy explained all about the hotel & all was taken in. My room on the 6th floor (601) was large with a king size bed but was in a loft type which ment going up a flight of stairs after walking into the room which was a chore with luggage. The room & bathroom were fine, bathrobes were in the closet. The place was very clean & I had no issues with anything. Now, the hotel is not in the best of location in Vancouver (lots of homeless) but I felt safe walking at night, there is a Tim Horton's right by for breakfast which due to COVID the hotel no longer offers.

Did not have breakfast at the hotel.
Sky train to waterfront station is only a few dollars. The cab ride is about $8 from there
I can tell you that we did not hear a peep from the other rooms. Honestly, the street noise was more than tolerable with all windows to the street open. As in any major city you get street noise, however we never found it intrusive. I hope my review helped in your search for nirvana!
Easy 15 min walk to the cruise port. If you have bags and want a cab it’s only about c$8
Yes you can have a smudge room and sweat lodge experience - there is a cost to this . The best thing to do is to send a email to the hotel and find out what current rates are. If there are only 2 of you they maybe able to put you with others which reduces the cost.
I stayed there for 3 nights and September and loved the hotel.
