Very dated musty sort of place needs a good airing but the kitchen is the most well stocked hostel kitchen I've ever seen! Bathrooms are modern, clean and good hot water and shower pressure. Very friendly, welcoming couple running it. Big downside is that we paid more for not being a YHA member then got no access to wifi whereas... More

We were at the hostal twice. The second time we came because we were again in the region and we remembered that the place had been so nice, cosy and friendly. The place is quiet, has a big lounge with a wood burner and tons of books. Moreover, it's one of the few places were you can expect a piano... More

Visited location and was greeted by the most unfriendly member of staff, described as a middle aged or older male who was very tall wearing a red shirt, he had poor communication and welcoming skills. Using the YHA brand as a marketing tool, severely let's then down. Stop and think about how you treat people when they walk through the... More

We arrived at Smylies after a long drive from franz josef glacier and we wished we'd carried on to Christchurch instead! We booked it through the YHA expecting that any affiliates would be tested and reviewed regularly to ensure they are keeping up to the standards that the YHA are known for, "quality accommodation for travelers" being their slogan. This... More

A friend and I were on a motorcycle ride when the winds picked up and rain was coming down in sheets. We cut our day short and were just hoping for a warm, dry place to stay, and this place delivered. The main communal room of this yha is a huge study/kitchen/library complete with thousands of books, a rustic pot-bellied... More

This yha is very pleasant. Everything is clean. The showers are huge and comfortable. The garden is nice. Big choice of DVD, mangas and books. The owner is wellcoming and very frendly. I recommand this place, on the road to Arthur passe. Gilles

We stayed here as a touring group. The rooms were clean, the place old but had everything we needed. We had an evening meal and this was very tasty, not the usual roast and veg. I would return just to eat here.

Great price, very nice people. Very friendly driver who showed me around at the Broken River ski club. Allowed stops at the supermarket without any extra charge. Also, a spacious car with plenty of space for skis and bags!

I don't leave reviews very often, but I feel so strongly that the operator of this hostel was hateful that I feel obliged to. I arrived at the hostel around 8pm to enquire about renting a bouldering mat. At approximately $20/day of rental, I asked a few questions about it, such as if I would be able to have a... More

We had a great stay here. The owners are really friendly and helpful, and the hostel meals are brilliant value. We had one dinner, which was 3 courses and tasty homemade food. Dinner is $20pp and breakfast is $7.50 continental / $13 fry up (we didn't have either). The main hostel building has a good kitchen, lounge, piano room, and... More
