The experience of staying at a colonial mansion. Meson del Alferez Xalapa is a charming colonial style hotel with cozy rooms, each with its unique decor. Centrally located in downtown Xalapa, the hotel is home to the most famous breakfast in town at La Candela restaurant.

Very nice, excellent location, good staff attention.

The La Candela restaurant has an excellent flavor, truly, incredible. The "rabo de mextiza" was a great discovery, but they are quite slow with the service in the restaurant. The handmade tortillas were delicious.

The place is like a large old house in the center, very beautiful, with two patios; The restaurant is located on the ground floor and the rooms are located on the upper floor.

I would give this five stars, but it’s not a five-star hotel. It’s more like a 3-star, but in that class, it’s a five. The rooms are classic Mexico hacienda style with mod-cons (AC that works, good WI, good water pressure). The street noice is intense outside, so ask for a room in back. We did, and had no problem sleeping. Some rooms have loft sleeping areas, so if you don’t want to climb steps to get to the bed, ask for a room all on one floor. The location is excellent. Breakfast is continental but good quality. For something different one morning, we went to the Cafe Don Justo around the corner, a very popular local spot with great coffee and a variety of egg dishes.

An old small finca with great history. Possibly original layout and well tended gardens, with decent reception and waiting room along with a charming barber shop.

As much as I like open inner courtyards, they do carry all kinds of sounds into the rooms, especially when the existing doors are flimsy old wood, and the windows have single glass panes.

Bare bones decor, much needed light in front of the sink to shave properly.

The restaurant below serves a good hearty breakfast a la carte.

Location in the Centro is a big plus as I was able to walk everywhere and felt safe even at night.

Staff seems to be made up of part time employees and maybe for that reason found them impersonal. It is puzzling that someone bothers to reply to reviews since there was no one behind the desk that seemed vested in the place.

My son and his beautiful bride-to-be chose this for all of his family and friends coming from out of town. We were all on the same main floor. What a wonderful amazing time. The hotel was super beautiful and clean. People working there were amazing. My room (112) was beautiful, super clean and well stocked with coffee and water, fresh towels and toiletries ... so nice. The shower was excellent. A short walk to the wedding venue and favorite restaurants. A few steps downstairs to a wonderful breakfast and delicious coffee every morning. I will never forget my stay here, or my wonderful time in Xalapa MX.

This little hillside inn is a former colonial mansion, authentically restored and located a block below the main plaza in the historic center of Xalapa. While the rooms are modest and somewhat sparely furnished, the prices are reasonable and staff is friendly and accommodating.
An additional advantage is the restaurant located on the lower floor, which serves excellent breakfasts and lunches.
Some limited parking.

The only downside is the traffic noise.

We had great difficulty finding this place (driving into town without directions), but were so glad when we did. The hotel had secured parking available for us. We had a choice of rooms... the more expensive room was bigger and quieter, for about US$55. The cheaper room (about US$33) was smaller and noisy (noisy only at peak traffic times), but we were aware of this when we chose it. Even still, the room was super clean, and though small, managed to have all of the conveniences of the larger rooms, tucked away in corners. The hotel has managed to maintain the "old" feel of the building while still keeping it clean and functional. The price of the room included breakfast in the downstairs restaurant which was excellent (continental or yogurt, or you could order something else and pay the difference) and had tasty coffee. Finally, the hotel's location is very central, only one block from the zocalo. You can't beat the value! I strongly recommend this hotel for those visiting Xalapa on a budget.

There may be other charming hotels in Jalapa, but we didn't see any- they all looked like dreadfully dreary "modrn" boxes. The Meson del Alferez had simple clean rooms and a charming antique feel. The restaurant downstairs is only open for breakfast and dinner, but from the looks of the clientele, it is a favorite with the city's professionals. there is a good restaurant for dinner in the next block and the zocalo is two blocks away. You will need to ask where to buy ice at the front desk, because though they have internet available, they have no ice machine.

Xalapa Mexico: Meson Del Alferez: “A disappointing experience"

After reading the fine reviews on this hotel on Trip advisor and in Fromers, we were very sadly disappointed. The property is not well maintained, and the actual rates at the hotel are much higher than most reviewers quoted. The rooms we were shown were all in a similar condition, neat and “apparently” clean. The one we selected, upon closer scrutiny, revealed very soiled upholstery in the sitting area (not well lighted during the tour), unsafe lamp switches (shorting wires), poorly patched holes in the wall, locks that weren’t secure, etc. However, having secured advance reservations, not knowing the town, and being tired after a very long journey we decided to stay for one night and look for better accommodations the next day.

The worst and culminating incident was having a huge cockroach drop on me from a ceiling beam shortly after retiring. It appeared that the room had not been treated for this type of insect infestation. We immediately packed our belongings, told the desk person about our experience and left to book another hotel (at half the cost!). The only good part was that the front desk person did not hesitate to void the hotel charges.

Meson Del Alferez could be a lovely property, the setting has great potential and the rooms are authentic in style and furnishings, but the patio area is sorely neglected, the electrical needs attention, for safety reasons if for no other, holes in walls should be patched to help eliminate insects, etc. Authentic and quaint do not equate to disrepair and lack of upkeep. In our opinion the hotel is extremely overrated as it stood in November/December 2005.

NO heat and NO a/c but a wonderful hotel in the middle of the shopping district, one block from the Cathedral, and one block from the most beautiful main park of any Mexican city I have visited. Rates are very reasonable. Very small hotel---I was told 22 rooms. Excellent service. The restaurant below the hotel is noted as being one of the best in Xalapa for breakfast and lunch. Your breakfast (continental) is included in the price of your room. Very limited English and sometimes no English spoken. Amazing what sign language can accomplish. DO NOT think about using American dollars---they are not known in Xalapa. There is a computer room---across from the lobby desk, no charge. We changed rooms from an upstairs/downstairs to a single floor room and I forgot and left several hundred dollars in our first room. The money was not touched and it was returned to me. The hotel was previously the home of a wealthy family and it retains that atmosphere. I was told that Sanborns will be built in the vacant lot next door to the hotel. There is a Mexican lady who sits on the sidewalk at the entrance to the hotel who sells soft drinks, candy, etc.---buy from her---very reasonable and she does beautiful embroidery.

It isn't the fault of the poor people who run this place, but a nightclub next door makes it literally impossible to sleep. How do I know? As I write this it is now 3:25 a.m. as I write this and they are still going strong . How bad is it? I have high quality earplugs in and tried covering my head with a pillow ...nope....still hear it. Inseams to make the whole hotel actually vibrate.So...great place to stay if you are a Mexican University student and want to stay up all night dancing and getting loaded and then plan t sleep it off in the next day...not so great if you just came to Jalapa to visit the museum because you are interested in culture and hoped to get some sleep the night before. In a nutshell, this place is my own personal idea of hell
