It is about a mile walk to get into the business area but probably 2.5 miles to get to the Malecon area where many of the nicer restaurants and shops are located. We had a car so did not walk but would have felt safe walking during the day. Walking at night would have been less safe because your walk would be through some areas that were not well lit and did not have a lot of people present.
