Stayed at the Barcelo Maya Caribe Oct 2-10, 8 nights. Booked thru a package with WestJet vacations. Front Desk – friendly, helpful, pleasant to chat with as needed during my vacation. When I checked in Oct 2, there was only 1 person at the front desk. After waiting over half an hour for him to check in the 3 ladies in front of me, I chatted to him when it was my turn. He said a group of 80 showed up to check in that they were not aware of so a private check in was set up and that’s where the other staff were. Guest Services – books your Covid tests before your return home, also books your restaurant reservations for dinner. Lovely ladies in that office, very helpful, friendly. Visit them after you check in to get what bookings you need done. I was able to book more restaurant spots than I actually wanted. Paid $20US for dinner at Brazilian at the Palace one night – this didn’t count as one of my allotted dinners. In the end, I ate at Marenostrum twice, Rodizzio once, Capri once. Enjoyed variety of the buffets and not having to worry what time it was. Had I wanted, I would have been able to book 5 reservations plus the paid dinner at the Palace. Meals/restaurants: Temperature taken by the hostess before allowing entry to the buffets and/or any restaurant. Then after entering the doors, hand sanitizer. Mask wearing required at all times you’re not at your table eating. Some guests not as considerate and compliant as others when walking around the buffet for food. Several times saw a manager mention to people to put on their mask. Caribe buffet – excellent variety, always great salad bar options and fish area (loved the white fish options), meats area for lunches and dinners. Normal variety for breakfast: many fruits, omelet station, and lots of other options. Excellent table service. Friendly staff. Spanish night at the buffet offered 4 different paella options. Seafood night had excellent variety of seafood, both cold and hot. Seafood options in the salad bar lovely presentation and yummy, favourite was papaya and shrimp combo. Colonial buffet – one morning went for a walk and tried this buffet. Same type of variety but preferred the ambience of the Caribe buffet. Marenostrum – dined here twice. Delicious grilled lobster, good service. The Panna Cotta for dessert was also a delight. Capri – amazing rack of lamb. WOW. Environment was so relaxing, nice ambiance and music. Great service. Excellent salad bar, marinated mushrooms were a delight. Brazilian/Rodizio – nice salad bar that’s self serve. Skewer meats were great, large portions for some that would be a meal alone, the Churizo was sweet and nice. Bellman: they were always friendly, looking happy to be there. Walking me to my room after check-in he mentioned the resort is only 25-30% full right now. Double decker shuttle bus runs around the resort every 15 minutes, although once after dinner at the Palace waited 35 minutes. Nice to take the bus on the first morning at the resort for a refresher to see where everything is. Get oriented. The driver will dispense hand sanitizer to you upon boarding the bus. Masks are required, but many people took their mask off if upstairs and the roof was open. Hotel room: Mini bar restocked as needed. I would leave a note in Spanish with a tip asking for extra water, and always given several extra bottles. Missing slippers in room at check in but delivered once I mentioned this to the front desk next day. They misunderstood and also had another robe delivered (already had 2 in the closet). Bathroom had 4 shower towels (large in size but rough feel), face cloths, 2 hand towels, hairdryer, and amenities but I mostly used toiletries I brought. Good size closet. 16 top hangers, 4 pant clip hangers. Electronic safe in closet on a shelf. Coffee maker (didn’t use it). Decent air conditioning (never went below 22C even if setting lower), so ceiling fan was great. A/C unit dripped in front of the closet. I would just put a new folded towel down daily. Not a bad drip to report more than once during my stay. Mentioned it again at check out and FD person made a note. Room Attendant did a great job keeping my room clean and fresh. Tipped daily as you never know what day she’d be off. I would put up the sign to clean my room around 9am daily and was out until at least 4pm. A few times she was about to start my room after 4:30pm when I was going to shower and get ready for early dinner reservations. I just handed her the tip and asked for towels, or toilet paper. She was eager to mop as well as empty garbage cans too. Note that room 4322 is a connecting room. Never had a connecting room in my past visits to this resort. I had a good trip, a few aspects could have been better, but reality is I was so happy to finally be able to do a beach vacation. I'm from Canada (Vancouver) and we're had such strict Covid precautions in place. Beach/pool Towels are available at huts at the Tropical pool and Beach pool. At the Tropical towel hut, person took down my name and number of towels I took. At the Beach towel hut, just told to help myself, no record of towels taken. Asked for a towel card at check in and told not needed. Only 1 person I met was given a towel card. Pools were nice but wish I could have used the Beach pool. Entertainment staff start activities around the pools at 11am. From then onwards, you’ll be hearing loud music all day. Stay at 1 play at 4 was not quite accurate. Not impressed that the Barcelo Maya Beach resort was closed, specifically the pool. I learned the Barcelo Maya Colonial was closed to using hotel rooms, yet they still operated their pool, pool bar, all restaurants/buffet. Myself and loads of people I met were not happy the Beach pool was closed, chairs stacked, no water running in fountains, etc. Odd since the Towel hut was still open at the Beach pool, plus gift ship, yet no pool. It’s a pleasant free form pool without loud music and such a lovely environment. They kept all aspects of the Colonial area open (except rooms) but not at the Beach. The biggest disappointment that would not have me book this resort again is the way management dealt with (or rather didn’t deal with) a rowdy group of 80 teenagers from 3 schools. Wasn’t able to properly sleep for the first 5 nights of my trip. Same goes with everyone else I spoke with. I met lots of people, mostly from USA, who were in my building and other Caribe building. Now for the next 5 nights this is what I (and everyone else) experienced. This happened anytime from 10pm thru to 4am, usually around 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am. There is no way this group was of age to be in rooms, no way their rooms of 3-4 people each had an adult. They had a room beside me, 2 over from me, below me, below that room, and others along this building. They had numerous rooms within the Caribe buildings (4000 and 5000 buildings). Screaming, chanting as though yelling out cheerleading chants in Spanish, slamming doors, loud music, don’t let me leave off knocking and knocking and banging on my room’s connecting door one night for 45minutes straight. Yelling from one balcony to the other. This would go on for hours at a time. Music so loud vibrating thru the walls and up thru the floor below. I called the front desk nightly, sometimes several times. Each time told they would send security. When they did actually send security, usually over an hour after a call to the front desk, security would mention complaints, disburse the party room, and leave. 10 minutes later the noise, yelling, music would start up again. Sometimes moved to another room. One night I got dressed after my 2 calls to the front desk, walked the halls and noted down specific room numbers, intercepted security and gave him a list of the worst room numbers. I then watched from my 3rd floor landing of him knocking on the room below me on 2nd floor, and saw 26 girls come out of that room. My issues are not with what goes wrong. My issues are with management doing nothing about this group (front desk told me it’s 80 girls from 3 schools). I would talk to the front desk in the mornings, they would keep saying we know about this group and are not happy. We know they should not be allowed here. I was also told they ‘check out tomorrow’ a few times and they didn’t actually leave until Thursday. Staff in every department were not happy with this group. The room next to me took the room attendant over 90 minutes to clean after check out. I can live without being able to access the Beach pool (although disappointed). I cannot live thru another vacation with a resort management who cannot and doesn’t control these type of hotel guests. They were a nightmare. I’m entitled to expect peace and quiet when trying to sleep at night.…
We were booked to stay in Maya Beach but were put in Caribe instead - think it was to spread people out during Covid. Lovely hotel - rooms are all close to both the pool and buffet restaurant. The staff are all very friendly - we had a lovely lady serving us with drinks round the pool so look out for Irene Sanchez she couldn't do enough for us - kept us well hydrated! and was very friendly The evening buffet was varied every night and had something for everyone - even fussy eaters. The staff wore masks at all times (the same can't be said for all guests though!) the resort felt very Covid safe. Lateral flow tests are arranged onsite for fit to fly requirements Would definitely recommend
Came here many times and loved this resort. This year we came twice, staff is very, very rude. Room stinks. Food is disgusting. I will never come to this resort. If you don’t leave money in the fridge, they will not restock it. Wash clothes are not being replaced. Ti e to say good bye to Barcelo.
The resort had many activities available to do and was very clean throughout the resort!!! The sports bar was so much fun, we ended up at the sports bar almost every night of our vacation because of its fun atmosphere, our waiter, Miguel Calvo gave us awesome service!!!!
Ivan Vh, Irene Castillo, and Saul Canche made the best team. Everyday when we came in for breakfast, Ivan remembered our names and the whole team delivered top notch service. I also enjoyed our swim up room and the grounds were always well kept. The rooms were a little muggy and warm and the some of the food was lack luster but the staff as a whole was great and the resort is beautiful.
