Catalonia Riviera Maya offers an energetic vibe with nightly shows that guests love, though some have issues with dim lighting and loud music. Its location is a hit for its security and nearby attractions. The amenities, including varied dining and water sports, are generally celebrated, yet some visitors note the early pool closure and desire for updates. While the cleanliness meets standards for most, room and service experiences vary, with some highlighting upkeep and staff attentiveness and others pointing out inconsistencies. Opinions on value also differ, with some concerns over additional costs.

My fiancé, myself and another couple visited Catalonia Riviera Maya January 18 for a week. We had a really good time and honestly didn't have anything to complain about. We're pretty easy going! We really enjoyed the beach (a bit rocky at first but we didn't have water shoes and we survived no problem) and the free snorkleing was really cool as well. We also did the free catamaran which was 30 mins or so but takes you out pass the rocks ...the water is so clear!
We also absolutely loved the beach bar..Rafael, Adriana and Filiberto are amazing and so much fun. We went to the same spot on the beach every day..just enough shade and sun for everyone to enjoy.
We didn't spend much time in the pool ..stopped by the swim up bar once or twice but there isn't much seating around the pool so we usually didn't stick around.
We booked the Privileged Superior Room and did not have an issue with it at all. We found the beds to be comfortable and the large closet/armour was super spacious for our evening clothes. The bathrooms are nice and the showers had 2 options for pressure which was great. We didn't love the location of our balcony as it was completely covered with trees and right below was the staff building so you could always hear carts being rolled out/people talking but there's not much you can do about that! We still enjoyed it.
The room was cleaned every day and our fridge was restocked with water and beverages every day as well. Our cleaning lady left us a towel animal every day which was an added touch.
As for the actual Privileged wrist band...I would say it is worth it for the BLoved breakfast. We never made it for lunch or dinner but the breakfast there was always really good and the view was amazing. We did go to the pure chill out bar twice but again, because there was a lack of pool chairs, we didn't access the Privileged pool section ever and the privileged beach area was too quiet for us during the day. The pure chill out bar does have a very pretty view of the sunset.
We went to 2 A La Carte restaurants: Tappas and Steakhouse. Tappas were decent but the steakhouse was really good.
Both buffets are good as well! We found that the selection wasn't switched up often but the food quality was good and we usually enjoyed whatever we ate from there.
Lastly, we took the bikes twice and walked another time to the marina in Puerto Aventuras. We loved this..a staff member recommended the Hippo for food and it was honestly so good. Highly recommend if you want authentic Mexican food! It's also a really nice walk along the marina and you get to see Dolphin's swimming around (dolphin swimming is right there).
Anyway, we really enjoyed our stay at Catalonia Riviera Maya and definitely plan to return to Puerto Aventuras!

Stayed at the Catalonia over Christmas 2019.

Hotel has a great design and ambience and very friendly staff. Rooms are a bit tired (although some were being decorated whilst we were there) but cleaning was great.

Plenty of choices for eating. Breakfast was great and plenty of lunchtime options for eating in the buffets or getting a snack to stay on the beach. Evening buffet was a bit disappointing at times but over Christmas was great (especially Christmas Eve). Speciality restaurants good, especially Steakhouse, Italian and Japanese.

Bar service was generally good although the staff didn't seem keen to use proper glasses if they could help it. I know they aren't used on the beach but in the main bar in the evening it seemed a bit strange to have a short in a plastic glass.

Evening entertainment was really good with a live band every night and live shows most nights in the theatre. Animation team were great as they allowed you to enjoy your holiday but were still very chatty even if you didn't join in the activities. We liked the way they didn't take over the evenings with the live band (as they seem to do more and more at Rius) but let the guests dance how they wanted to. It felt like they were there to help you enjoy your holiday rather than force you to enjoy it.

One downer was the reserving of sunbeds. We arrived on 14 December and easily got a sunbed on the beach at 9 o'clock. As the hotel filled up towards Christmas we were on the beach by 745 (often sitting on our own) as people were reserving sunbeds from about 630 and then not returning until 10 or 11 o'clock. We even heard that some people were leaving towels on beds overnight. If the hotel stuck to their rule of removing these towels (or getting more beds) then it would help.

Hotel is in a great location as it's about a 5 minute walk to the marina where there are plenty of bars/restaurants if you want a break from the hotel.

Overall, for us a really good Christmas holiday.

Stayed at this hotel over Christmas and the hotel itself is great. Would only rate it as a three star as rooms in need of renovation. Some rooms currently being renovated and the noise continued until eleven o'clock most nights. I understand the work needs to be done but surely not over Christmas which is their busiest period. The roof in our room and three adjacent rooms leaked so had to be moved, unfortunately it took four days to do this.
The staff were all amazing and never had to queue for food or drinks at any of the bars or restaurants. Food was plentiful and a varied choice and never heard any complaints from guests which is unusual. The only complaints in this area was why they couldn't get alcohol any earlier than eleven o'clock. Why this was a problem I'm not sure as lots were drunk by six o'clock anyway, one pulling a table full of drinks over herself before vomiting all down herself while sitting by the pool.
Sun beds were always reserved by 07:00am and lots were never used as the guests would return late afternoon and collect towels before hitting the bar. Signs every where saying this was not allowed but never reinforced by the staff the same as dress codes in the restaurants. We booked the beloved restaurant for a lobster meal and other guests were sat in football shirts and shorts which in the privileged section surely isn't acceptable.
We did feel like third class citizens as some areas were for exclusive guests, some for priveledged guests and then the rest of us.
Lots of other guests were complaining (some having stayed here several times before)
Saying they would not be returning as it had gone downhill since their last visit.

Dear Pete, Thank you for your contribution. First of all, we are sorry to know the result of this experience, we are not proud at all and you can be sure that we will work to improve. The renovation of this block has been the most important project during the last semester, the opinions we received from the rooms were mediocre and that's why we encouraged ourselves to give them a 180° turn, I'm sorry that the process was uncomfortable. Regarding the different categories, it is definitely not our intention to create this impression, on the contrary, we know that our guests have different needs and preferences, therefore the creation of different categories and environments of hotels; learning from this experience, we will look for better ways to share the information so that instead of demeriting these benefits, we can add. Thank you very much for the opportunity, we will work as the great team that we are. Best regards,

If you are an experienced traveller, steer clear of Catalonia Riviera Maya. There are more flaws than benefits to this resort. For roughly CAD$300 more, we could have stayed at 5 star resort with far more than Catalonia could offer. Do not cheap out on your vacation if food, decor, quality of rooms, drinks, beach and sand quality, and service matters to you. If you plan on being drunk the whole time, or if this is your first vacation, then by all means, you probably won't notice anything wrong with the resort. This is the first resort I've visited where the minibar in the room is literally just 4 bottles of water. Room service is for an extra fee - as with almost anything. Even some bar tenders at the disco tried to refuse to make certain drinks unless you tipped them. Thankfully, our flight home got cancelled and WestJet sent us to Moon Palace Nizuc in Cancun for only a night where, unlike the Catalonia, there was soft sand and rock/pebble free beaches (the beach at Catalonia was despicable. Rocks and coral everywhere! Very low quality beach). The service and drinks at Moon Palace were flawless. Liquor dispensers in the rooms, welcome wine bottle, and 24 hour room service (with an extensive menu that delivered quite quick) all were included with the all inclusive package. I would definitely return there and leave Catalonia Riviera Maya to those who do not pay attention to the little details or are simply inexperienced travellers. I have been to 3 star resorts in Egypt that were far more impressive than Catalonia.

Spent 5 days at the resort. Overall we had a good stay.

We upgraded to the “premiere” room which gets you access to the private Beach/Pool, hydromassage in the spa and a better room. Not sure that it was worth the upgrade cost.

Room was okay, nothing impressive. The shower kept draining slow (about 3 inches of water) and even tho we complained twice nothing was done. One day we came in and the door frame had a gap, didn’t know if someone tried getting in, but was told it likely happen when cleaning came in. We did notice it at other rooms. Beds were comfortable, bedding was ok.

Overall I was really annoyed by the lack of cleanliness. The walkways in the room area were always dirty as was the elevator. Literally a piece of gum on the floor for days. Another time an employee walked out with 2 rolls of toilet paper, when we walked in there was the wrapping.

Drinks were good, and great selection. Food on the other hand was not. We were not impressed by the buffet or a la cart restaurants. We tried B loved, the Mexican one and the meat grill all lacked flavor, basic seasoning. Even coffee was terrible. I understand it’s all inclusive and food is made for the masses but a little attention to the food can go along way. Wait staff was great tho, very attentive. Especially, Misael, he remembered my birthday and surprised me with a birthday cake and drink.

We also enjoyed the entertainment in the feather, both game show night and Divas.

The new year celebration was put together well, the Beach are looked amazing unfortunately the fire works and count down we’re not timed correctly. Still a great night, and the entire resort staff set the time by dressing up.

So here you are looking for someplace to go on your vacation. Trying to ensure you have a great time and spend your hard earned dollars wisely. Well here’s your answer: Catalonia Riveria Maya Resort. We were at this sort resort back in 2010 and at the Catalonia Playa Maroma three times since then. Both resorts are amazing and I have only good things to say about both.

We went to the Catalonia Riveria Maya Resort in January for seven days and stayed in the privileged side of the resort. The room was super clean and the daily towel sculptures never failed to make us smile. In room there’s a safe, flat screen TV, 110v outlets, hair dryer and mini-bar stocked with cerveza, water and soft drinks.

We went to almost all of the a la carte restaurants and ate breakfast and one dinner at the buffet. Japanese is the winner, with the steak house, Italian and Mexican rounding them all out. We had reservations at The Tapas but it’s open air and it was a bit cool that night so we passed. There is an amazing spot that serves burgers, fries and all the comfort food you might miss from home right by the pool. Add to that a hot dog cart and a creperie and even the fussiest of eaters will be happy.

The staff are all smiles and willing to help you with any of your needs. There’s a bank and a couple of stores on site to check for souvenirs or supplies.

I’m always a bit worried about the nightly entertainment but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the shows. When they started to lip sync I was like, “oh no...” but by the end of the show clapping right along with the packed audience. Right outside the theater is a cool chill area with a brand new bar. Nightly entertainment before and after the shows gets everyone up dancing and having a great time.

The pools are clean and well kept and the resort is in the process of replacing all of the loungers with new ones. You’ve probably heard about the rocky beach so I would advise bringing along some slip on water socks. But if you enter on the lagoon side it’s all beautiful sand with no rocks at all.

There are lots of friendly people at this resort from Canada, USA, UK and beyond. We met one couple that has been to this resort 21 times! So that speaks volumes to me. We’re looking to book again in March because there’s something nice about going to a place where you know you’re guaranteed to have a fantastic time.

Any questions at all please send me a message and have fun in Mexico!

We have just returned from Catalonia Riviera Maya having had a great holiday for 10 days.

Positives from our trip:
Great location, you are able to go outside of the complex to the local marina, if you don't fancy walking you can hire a golf buggy
The beach was great, snorkeling and kayaking filled the kids (and the male adults!) time (for free)
Lovely food, great variety in the buffet restaurant, and even better quality of food in the a la Carte restaurants, most notably for us we enjoyed the Italian
The pool area was well serviced, drinks were bought to us promptly, and we were also served promptly in the snack bar
Sunbeds were relatively easy to get, even with 6 of us
The entertainment staff were amazing, mainly Rodrigo, Miguel and Alijandro took time out to chat and make us all feel welcome. Other staff (Georgina, David & Flow) were great too. Miguel deserves his own night on the stage, he's hilarious!

Negatives:
Whilst the hotel was classed as 4 star there is no way the bathrooms could be described this way. They are very tired and very shabby, and in desperate need of an upgrade (the answer to this is not to get guests to pay to upgrade either)
Smoking needs to be stopped in the Abuelo bar. Even though there are no windows it still has an enclosed ceiling and to sit amongst other guests who were near chain-smoking was horrible. I would hope that the management would look at this given they host children in the area

Aside from the 2 negative points we had an amazing time here and have already looked to return!

Pros: Family friendly, not over crowded, pleasant staff when we got home to Chicago we realized how miserable people are in USA immediately, room and resort were very clean, privileged dining at the Beloved Restaurant, privileged pool, bar and beach section, a tip of 5 dollars or more goes a long way with the wait staff and bartenders, meeting new people, our cleaning lady was very honest we left our safe open and she didn't touch our room left us a letter explaining why, Japanese and steak restaurant were the best dinners at the resort. I ordered shrimp and my husband ordered steak and shrimp at Japanese, at steak house I ordered mahi mahi and husband got the filet mignon we also ordered an entire lobster for an additional 30.00 USD which was huge and well worth the money. Not a ton of young wild partying teenagers or 20 something people there. Massage with privileged room was wonderful.

Cons: Booking dinners was a nightmare if you like to eat early and by early I mean 6 pm, if you're located near abuelo bar after 9 pm is noisy with live music, no real top shelf liquor for anyone, most drinks are made with rail unless specified and the ones that are specified to be made with Bacardi, casadores, or stoli do not taste like the genuine alcohol labeled on the bottles. Buffet food is bland for the most part, if you're a little into cooking you can dress up some of the things offered . For instance they have chilaquiles both red and green sauce I would order two eggs over medium to place on top of them. You can also put some salsa on top of it.

Venture over to the marina for happy hour you won't be disappointed. Book a few excursions through the people at hotel, Mayan ruins are amazing. Make sure you have confirmation emails and phone numbers for everything booked including rides to and from airport. Bring lots of 1's and 5's for tipping.

Dear Ana Maria, We love receiving comments from our guests because they always allow us to see the areas where we need to improve as soon as possible, thank you very much for having the confidence to share. Of course our Chef and Food and Beverage Manager will be paying attention to your experience, and for your peace of mind, all our spirits are certified, it could be that the different flavor is being caused by a bad preparation or that our soda is losing gas before being served, either way, both cases will be monitored, we appreciate the confidence to mention it. It will be a pleasure to know that you are coming back and we have once again achieved your total satisfaction. Thanks for your preference. Best regards,

Found this hotel in TUI brochure after looking at other hotels in Mexico. We arrived on the 18 Oct 2018, we had a brilliant time from the minute we arrived till the minute we left. We immediately felt valued as a guest at the hotel, nothing was too much trouble. The staff were brilliant. When we got to our room they had put a celebration banner on the door announcing happy birthday, inside we found a cake and a bottle of bubbly. We went for something to eat and was shown to a table, the waiter was there almost immediately pouring water for us and asking if we wanted a drink or did we want to wait a little longer. We then went to see what we could have for dinner from the buffet style menu and found plenty of choice and also noticed that anything running low was immediately replenished. The staff in the restaurant were always cleaning up the tables but never got in your face while doing so.The day after we went into the beach and found that it had been cleaned from the previous day and this happened every day. We made reservations to use the other themed restaurant that was on site our favourite being the Steak one which we visited a few more times in our two weeks there. The maids who cleaned the room always left a towel made into a sculpture on our bed they had a talent for that, and the rooms were spotless when they left. The staff who served behind the bars were great, again nothing too much trouble. We have booked to go again this year in September but that's depending on this Covid19. But we will be going back there even if we have to wait till next to do it.
Well done to the staff and management of this hotel you do a brilliant job and I can understand why you work there year after year.

I just visited Catalonia for a week for my honeymoon October 2020. This was my second trip there, I had visited once before the pandemic as well. Overall, there were far less people there than I have ever seen before, I think they can have 20% of their rooms booked at a time. All the staff was wearing face masks and face shields the entire time. All guests were required to wear face masks in any of the buildings/common spaces. Staff required guests to sanitize their hands and their feet upon entry to each building. There was an entire wing of the resort that was closed- you could still swim in the pool in that section but there was no lifeguard, bar, or food nearby. I would HIGHLY recommend you upgrade your room to "Privileged" because it gives you access to FREE room service, and the ability to eat at their good restaurants, not just the buffet. I would have been very sad if I had to eat the buffet food for every meal. However, I ate some of the best meals I've ever had at their restaurants for dinner. The staff was friendly. The wildlife was plentiful without being annoying, and the views were stunning.

The concierge will book one reservation for you. They did it for us the morning after our arrival. We chose the Japanese restaurant and it was awesome. Also with Preferred you get a 45 min Hydro spa included, we found out about it with only an hours or two before leaving the resort so we didn't use it, so be sure to take advantage of it. The restaurant booking occurs at 8am sharp and yes by 8:02am it is either all booked or only timings after 8:30pm will remain. Lots of oppotunities thoughs.
