Nothing much has changed since our last stay. The Federal police are still there. The rooms are basic and you have to ask for water and a second towel. They now have a restaurant that will serve breakfast. The desk clerk did not speak English so you need some basic Spanish. Also all the tv channels are in Spanish. Good location on that side of town.
Police sub station and sleep spot. LOTS of heavily armed federal police around in the lobby and in the rooms. It's ok for a single night passing through, and conveniently located at the edge of town, but it doesn't have anything to offer in terms of a longer stay.
Very loud hotel!!!!! The Mexican federal police has an office in the first floor and they are very loud. I felt safe there because of the police presence but they were very LOUD! The worst part is all the mold in the hotel. The room was filled with mold/mildew. It was in the bathroom, the bedroom, and on the ceiling! The room felt dirty because of all the mildew/mold. We woke up coughing the next day!
We've stayed here 2 more times since my first review of the Zar, (April 2014) and each time I have received a room of lesser quality than the one before. The last stay was really bad. No towels. Too much mold around the shower door, and the bathroom severely needed painting. I was really disappointed, because we like the location. The breakfast was okay, but they start serving later than they say. Next time we'll go down the road and stay at the Ibis. (4 - 5 miles)
The room was a welcome development since they took in our little dog, too. The room was clean and comfortable. Nice flatscreen TV, beautiful bathroom with a LARGE shower. My wife says it had the best water pressure she's seen in Mexico. There was plenty of hot water. However, there were some odd aspects: we had to ask for towels (there were none in the room). And the shower head points directly at the door spraying water all around the room if you're not careful. Also there was a guy who pounced on us as we were checking in to order room service. I proved to be very pricey and we wish we had gone out to eat. Overall we liked the room. There was lots of space and the facility was pretty good.
