Sat on the chilly lap of KongdeRi, surrounded by majestic mountains on all sides, MLNKongde is hours away from, and several thousand feet above, the closest bazaar. While the trail from Lukla all the way to Everest Base camp is dotted with hamlets and busy with tourists and locals alike, the Kongde path—taken by KhumbuSherpas in centuries past—offers a purer interaction: just you and the landscape. To say the Kongde lodge is an exceptionally rare Himalayan experience would be an understatement. Its deeply layered north view of the Khumbu valley, capped by Mount Everest on the horizon, is stunning and unmatched. Stars are so numerous and bright, you’ll feel like one of them. And all of it can be soaked in from a warm, comfortable indoor setting, or the lodge’s wide-open grounds.

Detailed Reviews
Very comfortable stay -- the rooms were clean, there were nice hot showers, and even though the rooms are not heated, we were toasty warm with our electric blankets and hot water bottles. The food was excellent, and very plentiful, and we enjoyed the hot rum punch and snacks at the "happy hour."
Also, remarkable views of the high peaks and great star-gazing!

Where can you see Mount Everest from your bedroom window? From Yeti Mountain Home Kongde! The lodge is located in such a beautiful spot, with an exceptional view of the surrounding mountains. It's a perfect postcard panorama. It was a long walk from Thame to get here, some parts the path was covered with ice (there were ropes fixed on the rock). We were very surprised that the Yeti Mountain Home had two people walk down to bring us a hot cup of tea just before the most difficult icy part of the trail. What a luxury, but we really did not want to make them walk for hours just to bring us a cup of tea! Upon arrival we got a hot cup of garlic soup, very tasty. On our first night the hot water did not work, on the second night it did (you get a time frame when hot water is available and it is possible to shower).
The room was clean, the electrical blanket worked and we got a small room heater. But all very luxurious, considering this is in Nepal, in the middle of the Himalaya, at 4210m. And the view from the lodge....great, you can wake up early and stand in front of the lodge to see the sunrise (and if you are too lazy to get out of bed, you can just open the curtains and see it)..Amazing!

The best location - not only of the six Yeti Mountain Homes that we stayed in - but the best location anywhere! Also the best food. And considering how remote this place is I have to hand it to the chef - the best!
The bedroom was a bit cold but I suppose you can hardly blame Yeti Mountain Home for the weather - a heater and electric blanket only just took the edge off.

Our stay here was very disappointing - even after taking into consideration the remoteness of the place. Please bear in mind when reading this that we are independent trekkers, not part of a YMH tour and and on this trip stayed at both YMH and Everest Summit Lodges (ESL) - their main competitor for luxury lodge trekking.
There are only two ways to get here - by helicopter and by walking. We walked from the YMH in Thame, which is what most people will do. The trail is interesting but not for everyone. It starts with the first hour going down the valley from around 3850m at Thame to around 3500m. Then it gradually ascends through beautiful rhododendron and beech forests with firstly Ama Dablan coming into view, then Everest. The trail has been maintained and improved by YMH and they have done a good job of it. After lunch the ascent gets steep and there are areas where you need to pull yourselves up on wire ropes and areas where there is ice covering the trail - see photos. Our guide called ahead to the hotel and someone from the hotel came to meet us with lemon tea and helped us over the icy parts of the trail which was good. Final hour or so is a fairly boring slog across the top of the hill to the lodge. I've seen various "adverts" for the trail with times of 6 - 7 hours. We are very fit and it took us just over 7 hours but all the guides we met told us that the average time is 8-9 hours so be prepared for a long day. According to my GPS tracker total distance was 17km and final altitude 4250m.
On arrival at the lodge it's not quite clear where the entrance is and, in contrast to Everest Summit Lodges where the staff meet you at the door with hot towels, we had to stumble around in the mist and find our own way into the hotel and into the dining area where the wood burning stove was burning as by 3pm the clouds were down and it was cold. I noticed that the next day a group of 7 Japanese had similar problems finding the entrance.
Given the remoteness of the place I guess it does well to provide the level of service it does. Food is adequate, it's warm in the dining room and there are electric blankets in the rooms. Hot showers are available for 30 mins from 4pm and electricity in the rooms available from 7 - 10pm - make sure your blanket is plugged in and working! Rooms are fairly basic and I didn't expect any more but, having paid $250 a night for room and breakfast, (plus $30 each for dinner) I would hope that things would have been finished to a reasonable and safe standard. Unfortunately not. There are loose electric wires hanging down from the mirrors and the catch on the window is broken so we couldn't open it to take pix of Everest in the morning - the supposed highlight of this hotel, but I did take some pictures of the room. It is interesting that YMH are prepared to invest a lot of money in a beautiful terrace where they serve breakfast to those who are unable to walk to the lodge and arrive by helicopter for a 3 hour roundtrip incl breakfast for $2200 per person - a bargain I'm sure. This in in contrast to what guests of the lodge have to put up with - the dining room is small and cramped and the only warm place to sit. There is a beautiful spacious lounge but I was told that the wood burning stove didn't work so it was too cold to sit in there.
The other reason for only giving this place 2 stars is mainly down to the attitude of the staff. This was in complete contrast to just about anywhere else we've ever stayed in Nepal - this is our 5th trip. I was told that one lady had been there for 10 years - I'd suggest it's time for a change of location for her. Here's a couple of examples: my wife ordered porridge for breakfast the night before. Next morning after waiting 10 mins she asked if she could have her porridge as everyone else had been served. As the afore-mentioned young lady walked off to the kitchen she exclaimed (in Nepali) hmmm - she can wait. Then we asked for our water bottles to be filled. In ESL's water is readily available for everyone. We were told, "Why don't you buy bottles of mineral water?" Now I think we all know that there is a problem with too much plastic in the world so I find this attitude highly irresponsible on the part of YMH - let's sell mineral water and make even more money out of the tourists and also litter the park with plastic. Finally as there's nowhere else to sit where it's warm the staff sit in the dining room when they're not working. I have no problem with this, but what I do have an issue with is them playing loud music on their phones without any consideration for others. I asked them if they'd ever heard of earphones, or if not could they turn the volume down - this led to more mutterings from them.
So in summary, the location is stunning, the rooms are basic, the price is extortionate and the staff could either do with a lesson in customer service or a change of location.

Response from Pasang S, Manager at Mountain Lodges of Nepal - Kongde
Responded May 15, 2019
Dear Guest, Thank you for taking your time to write your detailed feedback and correcting the trail's duration which is different on different blogs and platforms. We always appreciate hearing from our guests, especially in areas where we can improve. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused during your stay. To update you on Kongde, we have new team at Kongde since January and have received good feedback on their performance. The new manager Mr. Ang Dawa Sherpa has been highly recommended by our guests and the lodge is well managed. We are having a session on team building and attitude this off season as we could not put any session in between November 2018 till May 2019 because of continuous guest flow. We sincerely thank you for your invaluable feedback and we hope you will give us another opportunity in the future to demonstrate the service standards you have come to expect from Yeti Mountain Homes. Best regards, Ms. Pasang Lamu Sherpa Sales & Operation Manager

We went here as part of the Everest Helicopter tour. The views were spectacular. We had light breakfast in this lodge as part of the stopover. The area was colder as it was situated over 4500 m above sea level.

I was on helicopter tour to Kalaptthar. Initially we were about to land in Syanboche after Kalaptthar but I had already been to Syanboche so I requested our pilot if we can land in Kongde. Fortunately the weather was very clear and perfect for the landing in Kongde. Actually on may last visit to Gokyo,(few months back) I couldnot reach to Kongde because one of my friend got sick and we had to get him down as soon as possible so this time my wish to reach Kogde was fullfilled. What an amazing place it is surrounded by Himalayas all around. You can see the breathtaking view of the Everest, Amadablam , Thamserku , Choyu etc. This place is also the base camp of Mount. Kongde. I spent only 2 hours here.
There is only one hotel, Yeti mountain home and I am sure this is the best spot among other Yeti Mountain Home. When I was there the hotel was closed. But the toilet was opened and it was very helpful. I spent only 2 hours here but the memory of this place will be forever.

This hotel was the highlight of a longer trip through Asia. Staying here will give you some of the best views in the Himalayas, views of not just Everest but the greater Himalaya range. Staying here will also give you the time to see a sunrise and sunset falling on Everest. There is a very good day hiking option here of 2-3 hours - to a peak where you can get an even better view and this hike includes an ice lake.
I visited this hotel for one night, and got there via helicopter from Lukla, in mid to late November.
The hotel has hot showers (for one hour per day), and electric blankets to keep your bed warm at night. The rooms and hallways are cold, but the common eating area is warm. The wifi was actually pretty good for emails and social media, some news reading, but probably not enough bandwidth if you need it consistently.
But any problems need to be put into proper context - this is hotel is remote and you are lucky if you have the good fortune to stay there. It is only accessible via hiking and helicopter, and is off the electrical grid - solar panels and generator only. The staff do a great job preparing high quality meals even with these limitations. This hotel the height of luxury for where it is.
Also, Pasang Sherpa, the manager in Kathmandu was very helpful in planning my whole trip to the Everest region from Kathmandu, including Lukla flights, helicopter to Kongde, and hotel both in Kongde and in Lukla. The hotel has agents on the ground in Lukla to assist with airport pickup, air ticket re-confirmation (tickets out of Lukla must be confirmed in person the day before flight) and air ticket re-scheduling (often necessary out of Lukla), and guiding/hiking. Local Nepal cellular service gets reception, even in Kongde, so the Yeti Mountain Home team is always coordinating guest schedules in real time.
Great experience.

I did Yeti's Everest Trek with Yeti Mountain Home for 9 days. Kongde was the climax of the trip. The trail going to Kongde from Thame is very challenging. It is the most difficult trail I have done so far in my life. Of course I am not someone who does mountain climbing all over the world. But the trail is definitely worth the try. It is a private trail maintained by Yeti Mountain Home therefore is very quiet from the crowds. The trail cuts through mountains leading to Kongde and passes many beautiful waterfalls. Of course, there are also cliffs with landslides from the earthquake two years ago. The end of the trail has a very steep part with rope helping you. I literally crawled up on four limbs. My guide Tanzing has been encouraging all along the trekking. I don't think I would have made it without Tanzing's help and encouragement. The lodge in Kongde is remote and isolated. It is not on electric grid and relies completely on solar energy, battery backup, and the generator. So electricity is conserved and non-essential lights are only turned on during certain hours. Hot showers are only available during certain hours. Electric blanket can keep you warm at night but make sure that you get your bed really warm before you go to bed and the outlet for electric blanket may go out after midnight. But the electric blanket get very hot quickly and it should be sufficient to keep you warm all night. Wake up early and enjoy the fast changing mist and clouds and above all the view of Mt. Everest from your bedroom windows. The staffs are very friendly and kudos to the chef given how remote the lodge is. If you are adventurous and enjoy nature and quietness without the distraction of crowds, Yeti's Everest trek and the lodge at Kongde are the ideal places.
