Detailed Reviews
Six of us had a 5 day stay at Casa de la Cuesta last week. The photos before hand made it look nice, but seeing the accommodations in person was something else. Each room, each corner of each room was so beautifully decorated with the arts of Mexico, and every detail to make our stay comfortable was thought of. Heidi bent over backwards to accommodate our every need. She helped us with any arrangements we needed to make, she made us feel at home in her home....even giving us some peanut butter to go with the bread we brought home one night to eat don the veranda. Even presented a birthday cake to our honored birthday girl, with a special hat, candles and the staff sang! We just felt completely at home! The roof top bars in town are nice, but the best view of the city is from the Casa de la Cuesta upstairs patio, where there is table and chairs, cozy couches and a self serve bar! We enjoyed hiking with Bill one day, and we learned a lot about masks and Mexican culture and history from him on a tour of the adjoining Mask museum. Heidi’s lecture on folk art was fascinating and she helped us become more discerning shoppers, teaching us what to look for in terms of art in the markets. The breakfast they serve daily is delicious and healthy, and Heidi even shared some of the local recipes with me. Our stay at Casa de la Cuesta could not have been improved in any way. Heidi is the quintessential host and when we left, we felt like we were leaving a good friend!

Our family of 5 stayed at Casa de la Cuesta for 5 days. From the moment we stepped into the B&B we were greeted by Heidi and Bill with such warm and gracious hospitality. We relaxed immediately with a glass of wine and/or choice of a refreshing fruit drink. Bill shared initial information about our stay and included a list of suggested activities or places to visit during our stay. Any Room you choose will be amazing! Bill and Heidi were readily available throughout our stay with any needs or recommendations needed. Heidi conveniently called for our taxi transportation and she is a wealth of knowledge with recommendations for restaurants and shopping experiences.
My favourite time of the day at Casa de la Cuesta is Breakfast time! Table settings are beautiful and breakfast includes varieties of yogurts and marmalades with granola and bread as a first course. Second course is different every day including fresh eggs with a different side to enjoy new flavors. On a side note: my granddaughter’s 16th birthday was celebrated with Birthday cake that included our singing “Las Mañanitas” with Heidi and Bill and their kitchen staff joining in. It just touched our hearts at how memorable this moment was and it was the feeling of family with everyone. Heidi and Bill share activities and/or events that we might include in our daily plans. Included in your stay is a tour of the “Otra Cara de Mexico” mask museum which is Bill’s passion of collecting ceremonial masks. He shares their history and significance of when they were actually worn. Also, Heidi has her own art passions and can share different talents of her own and is such a detailed storyteller of her own experiences.
Casa de la Cuesta is perfect for your relaxing needs as well. Bill recommended if anyone wanted a massage he could arrange; my daughter immediately took him up on it and it was scheduled immediately for the following morning at Casa de la Cuesta! This B&B offers so many patios artfully decorated with outstanding folk art and the views from rooftop are breathtaking. One of our evenings we just skipped going out and ordered our dinner in (Italian recommended by Heidi) to enjoy the sunset views. Look no further this is the definitely the best experience that will leave you with unforgettable memories and all due to the expertise of running a B&B with excellent hospitality and personal touch that Heidi and Bill offer!

Immediately upon entering Casa de la Cuesta we were immersed in Spanish Colonial beauty: exquisite architecture, artful details absolutely everywhere, fresh flowers, beautiful courtyards and myriads of private patios to enjoy the beautiful views of San Miguel.
Each room is different and filled with gorgeous art, books for reading and thoughtful details; we lacked for absolutely nothing. Our room was spotless and well furnished with access to a private rooftop patio, so fun, We felt safe and pampered, sleeping with our door open, listening to the sounds of the city; from roosters to barking dogs and of course, the church bells.
Delicious coffee was available at 6:30 (perfect for us), don't miss the homemade, delicious cookies. Breakfast is beyond fulfilling, exquisitely presented table (different dishes each day), nourished the body and the spirit. Visiting with the other guests, we all knew we were in a special place and so lucky to have found it.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Mask Museum, learned so much and appreciate the Spanish culture more than ever before. It definitely was one of the best things we did in San Miguel, thank you Bill !
We explored the botanical gardens, visited the Fabrica Aurora, visited the many shops, magical rooftop dining each evening, mariachi's down at the Jardin, . We were fortunate to visit just as holy week began, being apart of that added a lot to our experience. It was hard to leave the spirit of the city square, as we made our way up the cobblestone street back to # 32 San Jose, we knew how fortunate we were to call it our home away from home.
Did I say that Bill has thought of everything: there is even an honor bar with wine and or tequila to finish off the day. As fellow innkeepers we are aware of details; we seriously could not think of one thing they were missing. (Massage is available and easily arranged, by you guessed it: Bill. He is the consummate host in absolutely every way.
While we enjoyed Mexico City and even the bus trip; on our next visit we'll fly closer to San Miguel and have Bill arrange for a driver for the drive to SMA. .There is so much more we could say; but then again, oft time's the magic comes in ones personal discovery: look no further than Casa de la Cuesta .
Tip: Take an evening walk down Aldama street, called one of the prettiest streets in the world ...you'll be taking picture after picture.
One more tip: Buy a mask, the best remembrance of a special place. (You'll understand why after your visit).

Staying at Casa de la Cuesta was like stepping into a Mexican folktale. From the moment I entered the property through its corridor of masks, I was enchanted by proprietors Heidi and Bill’s colorful collection of Mexican artifacts and crafts. Each day, something that I hadn’t seen before caught my eye.
The property is on a number of levels, each with easy access. Each of the seven rooms is tastefully decorated in a different cultural theme and most have their own outdoor seating area. Mine was themed “Milagros ‘ (Miracles), a cheerful and bright respite with its own fireplace. Outside my door was a terraced patio with comfortable seating and a spectacular view of blooming jacarandas and of the many church domes that grace the skyline of San Miguel de Allende…a great place for a morning coffee or an afternoon glass of wine. First thing each morning, I sipped coffee on the patio in the company of playful hummingbirds and watched a bevy of hot air balloons float by.
As you may have read in other reviews, a highlight of a stay at Casa de la Cuesta is the wonderful breakfast, prepared by a cheerful staff of local ladies and served each day on a different collection of Mexican pottery. Two courses, served at a communal table, are more than enough to last you until dinnertime. The first course consisted of juice, fresh fruit, a variety of yogurts, granola, bread and jam. Since I must be on a gluten-free diet, Heidi made sure that I had corn tortillas available to me. The second course was always a surprise…my favorite being huevos divorciados with both green and red sauces and served with beans and a quesadilla. Totally delicious!
Located on an uphill street, Casa de La Cuesta is no more than a 10-minute walk to most of the sites, markets and shops in the town. Don’t miss owner Bill’s tour of his on-site mask museum, a personal collection of hundreds of authentic masks with history and stories to accompany them. Be sure to also ask Heidi to share her knowledge and collection of Mexican regional crafts.
Casa de La Cuesta…a warm, welcoming and comfortable gem that you will never forget!

By far, the best B&B we’ve ever stayed at, and at an extraordinarily good price. Bill Levasseur, the owner, is welcoming, gracious, witty, and eager to share his extensive knowledge of SM, Mexico, and indigenous cultures. Casa de la Cuesta is a beautiful place with tons of charm and ambiance. The common areas include gardens and plazas that are stunning and filled with art, antiquities, and other accoutrements of Mexico, old and new. The rooms are tastefully themed. Ours, the Roman Lopez room was decorated with art from the namesake artist. Better yet, the views of San Miguel from the seating area outside our door was superb, quite the way to begin each morning and end each day overlooking the lights of the city. Did I mention the beautiful courtyards and gardens? On top of all this, each morning guests are served a two coarse breakfast, the first, a banquet of fruits, yogurts, granola, toast, etc. …… followed by a full hot breakfast of a Mexican specialty, which changes daily. Breakfast is a feast for the eyes as well as for body! Other services are extraordinary too and the staff is really on the ball. Unlike places in the US nowadays, the rooms are tended to daily, beds made, room tidied, etc.
Also of note is how seamless our transportation to and from the airport was. Bill arranged a driver to pick us up from and return us to the airport…….timely & stressless.
And then there are the masks! Bill is an authority on indigenous Mexican cultures and has spent a good many years collecting their ceremonial masks, so many in fact that he owns and operates the attached mask museum. While you’ll see a good many of these around the property, I recommend a tour of his mask museum. It will totally change your perception indigenous Mexican cultures.
In sum…….we liked it so much, we decided there was no need to consider anywhere else for our next visit. You won’t be disappointed.

Where to begin?! This casa of seven rooms is comfortable and beautiful and filled with interesting art work at every turn. There are so many outside spaces to gather if you are with friends and smaller outside spaces if you just want to be alone and relax. Heidi and Bill are the consummate hostess and host. Both are amazingly knowledgeable about the various indigenous communities surrounding San Miguel and further. The Mask Museum is a must see and Bill's tour is enlightening. Heidi gave us a presentation on the various art of several indigenous communities and her knowledge of these artists made the art that much more meaningful. Both Heidi and Bill made each day special for us beginning with a two course breakfast that is indescribable. Their guidance about what to experience in San Miguel was priceless. As first time visitors, I can't imagine having stayed any place else that would have been more warm and welcoming and helpful. At the end of the day, we felt as if we were coming home. When we return again to San Miguel, we will stay at Casa de la Cuesta.
Remember, this is a B&B, not a hotel. This experience is much more personal then you will ever have in a hotel.

From its warm and welcoming hosts, Heidi and Bill to its rooftop terrace views, Casa de la Cuesta.offers a window into all the charm that SMA has to offer. My room was spacious, so comfortable and decorated with authentic art of many regions that I learned about from Heidi’s expertise. The sumptuous breakfasts offered a great start to our busy days to be followed by relaxing cocktail hour in the evening from the honor bar as we watched the sunset from the choice vista. Heidi and Bill graciously arranged reservations and drivers with the “mostest” “go to.” Bill’s mask museum, adjacent to the hotel, is the real deal. It’s a fascinating view into Mexican culture, and he is an expert - worth the time. Casa de la Cuesta was a fabulous place to spend a week!

If you're looking for an enchanting San Miguel experience, I would highly recommend Casa de la Cuesta. Our stay was fantastic. Bill and Heidi were gracious, knowledgeable, and down to earth hosts who made our preliminary arrangements, our stay there and our departure strategy stress free. The palatial and breathtaking property is flawlessly decorated with authentic local folk art and traditional Mexican themes. The traditional mask museum attached to the property curated by Bill is incredible and a must see. Our room was comfortable and dreamily quaint, with a fireplace and small kitchen attached. The rooftop views can't be beat. Breakfast was outstanding! If you're looking for a colorful and immersive experience with hosts who are experts on the local art and culture scene, this is your place. We can't say enough about how magical our stay there was, it was both relaxing and educational and we felt both fortified and enriched by our stay.

This beautiful and tranquil B&B is a wonderful place to stay while in San Miguel. There are so many verandas to sit and enjoy a great view of the city. Hummingbirds are everywhere! The Mexican art collection of the owners is impressive. The breakfast every morning is beautifully served and was consistently delicious and different each morning. The owners have a deep and excellent knowledge of the local community and Mexican culture and heritage which they are happy to share with their guests.I would highly recommend this location for your trip to San Miguel.

We had a tour about the indigenous masque performance and got a close look at a huge masque collections from over all over Mexico. Bill and Heidi were very passionate about explaining to us. We were really impressed with their vast knowledge which is full of interesting and important historical events.
We also got to tour their home with beautiful rooms, realizing how incredible each and every part of B&B place is so well decorated. Most of all the entire building is a work on art in itself. We felt really welcoming and would definitely recommend everyone at most ages to take a visit here.
