The sounds of peacocks, bird calls, and crickets punctuate the stillness of an idyllic, retreat in the jungle. Living in a natural setting far from the incursion of modern life enables one to restore and rejunvenate the spirit. No electricity and internet enables and encourages guests to engage in meaningful conversation with each other in the evening over dinner in the "walawa" (main covered eating area). Vegetarian, natural cuisine is cooked from produce grown in the fields surrounding the retreat, tended by the villagers who live on the property and in surrounding villages. Cuisine and menu is first rate : healthy, delicious vegetarian curries and accompaniments. Sleeping "huts" and washroom / shower facilities, built according to ancient, traditional construction and design prinicples, blend seamlessly into the natural landscape. Huts with coconut palm roofs, beds with mosquito nets and walls at half height are scattered over an extensive acreage of property. Pathways lined with tropical plants meander throughout, interspersed with ponds and a "tank" or lake for swimming, surrounded by a backdrop of hills and rocks.

One of the most relaxing, spirituallly renewing and beautiful yoga retreats you could ever wish for. From the moment you arrive here the this tranquil natural environment will overcome you with a sense of peace and healing. This natural landscape is surrounded by picturesque mountains , rocky outcrops, a peaceful lake to swim in and overseen by a Buddhist temple on the mountain beyond. The natural beauty of this property is breathtaking and addictive and only enhanced by the amazing people who run it , the delicious organic vegetarian food grown by the village and the simple but luxurious huts you will stay in . The yoga hut overlooks the treescape and lily pads on the dam behind and as you do your yoga you can often hear the call of monkeys and sometimes even the elephants in the distance. There are hammocks in the trees throughout the property and it is so easy to wander along the tracks to find your own space and sense of peace. I could not recommend this Ayurevedic and yoga retreat higher.

What can I say….simply a magnificent moment out of time, a place where dame nature soothes the soul and all the senses come to life! Upotha is a haven of peace, where the beauty and simplicity of life find their place and one can truly reconnect deep inside. The beautiful array of a srilankan buffet during mealtimes, complete the séjour ! Bathing in the cool calm lake just up from the main homestead , was a daily delight. Massage and yoga … I will never forget my week in Upotha .

I come to Ulpotha regularly since it opened more than 25 years ago. Each time, I am amazed by the perfect mix between confort and nature which remains unmatched years after years. Ulpotha is beautiful, clean, safe and authentic. Ulpotha is respectful of the environment and maintains a perfect harmony with the villagers living around its huge and magnificent land. Nestled at the foot of untouched jungle at the edge of a several thousand years old reservoir, Ulpotha is heaven on hearth. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and Ulpotha is its pearl; a place where one could stay forever because it has all the ingredients to reach the ultimate peace of mind. There is something strong and magic here that I have never experience anywhere before. Is it probably the extreme beauty of its land that renders the people of Ulpotha so kind ? Ulpotha, thank you for existing.

Ever since I read On the Edge by Edward St Aubyn whose Melrose novels made a terrific impression (do watch Cumberbatch’s pristine performance), I’ve been toying with the idea of going to a retreat. Unlike its main man, Peter Thorpe, I’m neither a disillusioned investment banker nor was I in search of an estranged lover, after a one night stand. In fact, I’ve had my feet firmly on the ground to know that no retreat would be a niche for nirvana seekers, in the third world, never a quick dose of euphoria to escape midlife crisis, nor even an antidote for my lingering inter-covid-wave depression. But I have always been fascinated by their spiritual quest, peace and bliss pursuers of Findhorn, the dream retreat of new age bon-bons: the bourgeoise bohemians whose life stops at the edge of Scottish highland wilderness. My emaciated, graduate student wallet deterred me from being part of the Findhorn family back then, in mid 90s. Yet, I’ve always been on the look out for something akin, for I’m convinced that my mortal coil deserves such rejuvenation. Thanks to a dear friend of mine’s proposal, I jumped at the idea of taking refuge at Ulpotha. Its eponymous name alone made me feel giddy with excitement, when contemplating the escape - whilst I felt trapped in my usual, all-devouringly white, tundric landscape during a Nordic winter. ‘Ulpotha’, its sonorous ring made me wonder what its distinct source is. No sooner did I land in Sri Lanka, than I left for Ulpotha. A ripe banana colour clad, nondescript man greeted us as we descended from the jeep, after a four hour drive from Colombo. Yet his very insouciant look, elevated by his sartorial simplicity made me a captive audience. Above all, his sedate tone of enunciations when greeting you, with his whole being devoted to you made me question whether he was trained at the Wharton school of U Pen. No, Sundar Pichai of Google never learnt any such benign communicative skills. Viren, whose name I learnt later, is the founder of Ulpotha. He took personal interest in every guest and ushered them into much ease, not just with the trivial banter but sharing the local lore, showing them around and above all, making all of us, jet-lagged or otherwise feeling battered, feel at home. Coming from little sunlight to the powerful evocation of the glowing sun over the verdant fields of Ulpotha was life-giving. William Turner back in early 19th century would have been in awe, in capturing the blurred effects of dissolution and transcendence. I was immediately convinced that I needn’t feel guilty for not signing up for the yoga programme. True, it held the juju. Yet, all what I wanted was to totally submit to this ethereal place where I could do nothing: sit idly, hug a tree, skirt around the body of water, known as the tank, for sure, built by the ancient Anuradhapura Kingdom kings. I had no agenda. Five days of immersing with people wearing their natural smiles, instead of shielding their faces with masks, like everywhere else in mid Dec in Covid-riddled Lanka, enjoying the healthiest array of dishes among a host of like-minded souls, and above all, spending long hours with precious of friends mine whom I missed for two years were all the prerequisites of a heavenly stay. From the very first minute, I felt a sense of affinity. Remember the feeling of going to your grandparents’ place which you loved as a kid, and now when returning, nostalgia of love, joy and warmth they shoved you with would rush back in waves. I shouldn’t hesitate to say that’s how I felt. . Ulpotha shook me to the core. There were times I could scream of joy And I did! Since I was one of the very few who could commune in Sinhalese with the staff, I took every opportunity to hear their story and share mine. What was mind blowing was that all the ones I spoke with exhibited a sense of pride in being a part of Ulpotha. They were not mere employees. Their commitment was a labour of love. No, none of the grand tourist resort personnel’s attention to detail can hold a candle to the pervasive modesty and sincerity the Ulpotha staff discharged their duties with. I knew I would have to defend to a few unreflective souls when I returned to Colombo, about what I did for five days, for I was missing in action, left out in the sticks, sans electricity, sans attached bathroom and sans anything which would bring staples of joy, according to their books. I felt elated with the challenge. It’s the very presence of the absence of the aforementioned amenities which made me feel liberated. Hermit am I not, let alone a vegan. In fact, I love food. I travel the world to eat. Here’s the rub. Ulpotha doesn’t demand you to renounce anything. The lunches, the mega meal of the day - served in the open air pavilion painted in orange as if it were a mandir in Uttarakhand, set in breath takingly, conspiring with the maturing sun seeping through the thick foliage - lulled you to spend much time you want, eating as slowly as you want by yourself, ensconced in a corner-meditating over every morsel you savoured, or howling with friends in frenzy you have met over the previous meal. I felt gripped by a sense of ineffable joy. The communal spirit Ulpotha offered was nonpareil. The Snack shack which fed us in the morning with nutrients like fresh kola kanda, green decoctions and locally churned, rustic, organic grub to get the day started was a perfect place to strike a conversation over a glass of king coconut. I was so sad to learn that the shack offered snacks between meals as well, something I missed out because I was so engrossed in my walks and talks. Anyone who may wonder why I spent a good chunk of holiday here at Ulpotha, instead of shacking up with the sun n sand sheiks in a soulless sun resort, I decided to recite Keats’ ‘Endymion’: ‘A [place] of beauty is a joy forever: Its loveliness increases: It will never Pass into nothingness; but still will keep A bower quiet for us, and sleep Full of sweet dreams, and health and quiet breathing’ 1818

I arrived Colombo at midnight and got pickup by the friendly crew of Ulpotha. Arriving in the dark, I was carefully guided to my mud hut through the jungle. Waking up to Nature's bird songs, sounds of running river and wildlife of the lush jungle everyday is so lovely. Every corner of Ulpotha is an art, even the toilet (a place for letting go) and the outdoor showers here are uniquely and individually crafted into the surroundings. Very well thought furnishings that blend very well into the theme such as claypot dustbin, brass basins and taps, wooden table, wooden flush knob and toilet seat, partly roofed and partly open sky uniting the inner and outer worlds. Greeted by freshly decorated flower mandalas around the main house and Ambalama were also my favorite. The vegetarian cuisine here is mindfully created healthy slow food. Love the fact that our food is organically grown from the gardens, prepared with traditional ways like stone mortars and hand grinders, cooked with fire and served in claypots and coconut spoons. Around 15 different dishes are prepared in every meal, making our plates so colorful and so pleasing for the eyes. My body feels so nourished by the freshness of the food. Sometimes it's even hard to believe there's no fridge at sight in the kitchen. Everyone that comes on the retreat bonds so quickly and intimately like a family. The founder Viren is such a people person and a great character. It was a pleasure to meet him. We have daily yoga classes in the yoga Shala and outdoors nature. There are Ayurveda treatments and various therapy to go to. We also have fun time swimming in the lake where the locals also take their bath at. Easy trails for walking and exploring. Nighttime in kerosene lamps, off the grid from the digital world, Ulpotha is a fairy land for fireflies and million stars, making the whole place more so romantic. We had a great Friday night party with local music and everyone danced into the night. There's really so much to talk about at Ulpotha but you have to come and experience it yourself. It's truly a place full of wonders. It's a huge honor to be in such an extraordinary place with such glowing spirit. Thank you so very much!!!

My two kids and I had the most amazing holidays at Ulpotha. The staff and the whole atmosphere is so loving and generous. Not being able to use the internet is an amazing experience - The kids loved it - they were free to do what ever they wanted to do - no computer or phone "dragging" them. Books and speaking english with new people (we are from Denmark) suddenly became fun. The feeling of really having time to other people and yourself are something we take with us home. We can definitely recomend this wunderfull place :) THANK YOU!

What a fabulous two weeks I have just spent in idyllic Ulpotha! I loved everything about it - the unique environment, yoga (Georgia is an exceptional instructor who taught me so much), warm hospitality (Suzi is incredibly attentive and gracious), delicious food, accomodation, ayurvedic treatments and wonderful massages from the visiting therapists. An added and unexpected bonus was meeting the other guests who were all so interesting and a lot of fun! I'm sure I will remain in touch with many of them. A holiday like no other!
