I had a great time camping and rafting the last high water release of the 2021 season! Ryan and Ashley had the pleasure of guiding our rambunctious group of 12 divided over two rafts who clowned, the entire time. Needless to say, we enjoyed every second! Ryan and Ashley, along with the entire team at Northern Outdoors did a great job of ensuring that our entire party enjoyed the experience; from the campsite, to rafting prep, the rafting trip, and the delicious meal to follow. We will definitely be back! That is high praise from someone deathly afraid of water... lol

Our family are big fans of Northern Outdoors - they never disappoint. They have the whole package, offering amazing whitewater rafting experiences (among others), comfortable accommodations and great food/bar, plus games and a huge hot tub. We've rafted with them a few times and love their culture, staff and overall relaxed, comfortable vibe. On this trip, my husband, daughter, her boyfriend and I all rafted the Dead River on the last day of it's release on Oct. 2nd. It was epic! All of Northern Outdoor's guides are professionals and make everyone feel at ease. A big shout out to our guide Zach who was awesome! The Dead River is our favorite river in Maine to raft as it has more action more often. Afterwards, Northern Outdoors provides a great meal and then a video and photo show of your trip. If you want a great Maine outdoor experience with the comforts of lovely Maine lodge, I highly recommend Northern Outdoors!

This was our first white water rafting family trip, and every person at this place puts their hearts into the experience! From the tasty eats at the restaurant to the Penobscot River rapids, we would definitely do it all over again. Alexis was a fantastic server, being quick to deliver and always knowing what we were in the mood for! Callie was our awesome rafting guide, helping us pull up from the last boat to the front of the line RIGHT at the end…she’s the best blend of easygoing with sheer determination. VICTORY!!! We had an absolute blast-thanks again, Northern Outdoors!

To be fair they were having unseasonably hot weather when we were there, but no where on the website do they tell you the cabins have no AC. We went to the front desk and even asked to borrow fans, but they didn't have any. Thankfully our cabin had a basement bedroom so my hubby and I were able to have a cool place to sleep, but the upstairs where our kids were supposed to sleep was unbearable. They came down and slept on our floor. That was disappointing because the cabin was beautiful and we would have liked to enjoy it more (but the management doesn't control Mother Nature). I would suggest either bring your own fans if weather looks hot or management stocks the cabin bedrooms with one each). Also this place is in the middle of no where so bring groceries if you plan to cook (nearest town, Bingham, was about 20 minutes away) We ate at the Brew Pub both nights. Food was pretty decent, but kind of pricey for what it was. Everyone loved the burgers. My hubby loved the beers. Lodge where Brew Pub is located also no A/C so it was hot and outside was very buggy...lots of bug bites. You could play cornhole, swim or hot tub at the lodge and they also have a game room (pool, foosball, air hockey, electronic games) We also white water rafted on the Kennebec. Very well organized, well run and fairly priced and the lunch was out of this world delicious. Those guides work hard so please make sure you tip them. The black flies are BRUTAL! I'm not even sure bug spray would deter them, I think your only hope would be long sleeves and long pants....heed this advice!! I am still covered in itchy bites almost one week later!! This is described as a Class 3 river with maybe one Class 4 rapid (we have WW rafted before) and I found this river fairly tame. If you are looking for more adventure head to the Penobscot (where they also run tours). After lunch you only have 1 rapid and the last 1.5 hours is a leisurely float in (just to set your expectations). Overall we enjoyed it.

Response from Russell Walters, Owner at Northern Outdoors Adventure Resort
Responded Jun 17, 2021
Thank you for providing us with your feedback regarding your recent stay with us. We are sorry you found the cabin not as comfortable as you would have liked. Mother Nature is not always kind when we need her to be and it was very rare for us to have such hot/humid weather early in June. Combining that with the black fly season can make one frustrated. We list on our website what each accommodation has available to our guests. We do have air conditioners in our Lodge Rooms and Logdominium units, but not in our cabins. We will take certainly take your suggestion of putting more fans in the cabins in to consideration. We are pleased you enjoyed your whitewater rafting trip down the Kennebec river - including the riverside BBQ lunch. We do hope you will be able to find time to visit us again in the future when we hope to be able to deliver an experience that meets all of your expectations. We may even suggest a trip in the Fall when the bugs are fewer and the temperatures are more comfortable. :)
