#40 of 200 hotels in Tulum
Introducing, PAPAYA PLAYA PROJECT , A MEMBER OF DESIGN HOTELS™ PROJECT a true sustainable project in Tulum. Having sought far and wide for a place to create an authentic, nurturing experience, the 900 meter stretch of oceanfront paradise cocooned on the Caribbean coast of the Mayan Riviera was the perfect spot. Together with the owners of of the existing Papaya Playa beach resort, Design Hotels™ is initiating the ultimate pop-up camp. Claus Sendlinger explains: “Our idea was to create a transitory, yet deeply culturally-rooted experience and we couldn’t have dreamed up a better place to make this happen. Capitalizing on the natural environment and multicultural character of Tulum, we quickly put together an international team of real visionaries, each enriching the experience with their own food, music, design or wellness concept. The enthusiasm and creative energy of everyone involved enabled us to renovate the camp and put together a holistic program within a very short period of time.” So come December, the authentic-pleasure seekers have a new raw-luxe camp they can sink and rub their feet into. Eighty-seven rooms have been renovated by the Design Hotels™ creative team. Integrating local materials and building techniques, they encourage its residents to soak in the warmth of the elements, both physically and mentally. The separation between man and nature diminishes in these rustic spaces while the perception of small indulgences – like high thread count sheets, flowing mosquito nets and thick towels – is heightened. The ultimate luxury in most of the cabanas, is the private porch, where hammocks gently swing guests into sync with Tulum’s laid-back rhythm.

This place is so cool! The decorations are very boho in the outside areas. We went to the beach club during the day on a Tuesday and it was very relaxing. The cost of food and drinks are reasonable for the area and everything is delicious! The man in charge of the resort, Cesar, made sure that everything was good for us and gave us the best customer service.

My wife and I had been meaning to visit Tulum for some time now, and we had narrowed down a few of the top beachfront hotels to stay at. PPP immediately caught our attention because of its beautiful casitas and villas, and the paradisiac property layout, so we decided to book there. Once we arrived, we couldn't have been more thrilled about our decision. PPP is by far one of the most magical boutique hotels we have ever seen or stayed at anywhere in the world, period. From the moment we stepped foot into the hotel, various members of the staff introduced themselves and made us feel right at home. As guests of the villas, they assigned a team of 14 butlers – who are really just a group of super cool dudes available to help with whatever we would need, from an oceanfront setup to restaurant recommendations and reservations, and from room service to putting together an incredible romantic surprise for my wife (featuring flowers, rose petals, local fruits, and champagne). The butlers were on rotation so there were always 2-4 guys available at any time (day or night) and we could communicate directly with them via a WhatsApp group which made it super convenient. The villa itself was insanely beautiful. We stayed at the Casa Palma, which I was afraid would perhaps feel too big for the two of us, but it had the perfect balance of intimacy and spaciousness. We felt like we were in our own little island whenever we were hanging in our villa, whether we were having drinks in our private pool or hanging out by the oceanfront terrace. The food in the hotel was also truly amazing. While we tried some of the top restaurants in town and were blown away – ahem, Arca... WOW and special thanks to Alfie (who was one of our butlers) for the rec and pulling a last min reservation – we also discovered that PPP has some of the best food in Tulum. Their guacamole was one of the best in Tulum and their shrimp quesadillas... let's just say I've been thinking about them nonstop since we left the hotel 5 days ago. We will definitely be back and are counting down the days for our next visit to PPP. I gotta say, the only downside of the trip was just how insanely amazing it was, since coming back home just feels like an existential crisis as we wonder if we shouldn't just drop everything and permanently relocate to Papaya Playa Project. Thank you to everyone who made our stay magical – we can't thank you enough Frank, Nizer, Sofi, Kiki, Rodrigo, Roberto, Alfie, Christian, Alex, Efrain, and everyone else who made our experience truly unforgettable!

My friend and I planned our Tulum trip last minute. Although family and friends were worried about two girls traveling alone, Papaya Playa made everything magical and more than we expected. From the friendly staff, to Kiki and the concierge helping us with reservations for 5star dinners, our week in Tulum couldn’t have gone any better! Even the Temazcal ceremony left us with a new appreciation for nature and life! Thank you Papaya Playa, we will be back soon!

My wife and I decided to do Tulum for our honeymoon and couldn’t have been happier with our decision to stay at Papaya Playa Project. We stayed in an Oceanview Casita with a personal pool on top and couldn’t have been more impressed. It was the perfect mixture of nature, at home comforts, and privacy. The room was cleaned / refreshed multiple times a day and the bugs stayed out. The air conditioning worked great and the bed was very comfortable. Additionally, we had great WiFi and a secure safe which were important to us. With that being said, the security on the property was amazing and made it feel as if we didn’t even need the safe. The amenities were top knotch. Between the quite infinity pool / raw bar for a more romantic setting and the main beach club for a more lively experience we have nothing but good things to say. However, the real experience stemmed from the hospitality of the Papaya Playa team. From Lorenzo who cleaned our room and always stopped to have a conversation with us to Charlie from guest experience who went above and beyond to make sure we had the best trip possible, the staff was incredible. Additionally, the property manager seemed like he was on site 24/7 talking to guests and making sure everyone was happy. By the time we left, we felt like we were part of the family. This was definitely a 5-Star experience and we will be back! Thanks to the PPP team for everything.
