Introducing, PAPAYA PLAYA PROJECT , A MEMBER OF DESIGN HOTELS™ PROJECT a true sustainable project in Tulum. Having sought far and wide for a place to create an authentic, nurturing experience, the 900 meter stretch of oceanfront paradise cocooned on the Caribbean coast of the Mayan Riviera was the perfect spot. Together with the owners of of the existing Papaya Playa beach resort, Design Hotels™ is initiating the ultimate pop-up camp. Claus Sendlinger explains: “Our idea was to create a transitory, yet deeply culturally-rooted experience and we couldn’t have dreamed up a better place to make this happen. Capitalizing on the natural environment and multicultural character of Tulum, we quickly put together an international team of real visionaries, each enriching the experience with their own food, music, design or wellness concept. The enthusiasm and creative energy of everyone involved enabled us to renovate the camp and put together a holistic program within a very short period of time.” So come December, the authentic-pleasure seekers have a new raw-luxe camp they can sink and rub their feet into. Eighty-five cabanas have been renovated by the Design Hotels™ creative team. Integrating local materials and building techniques, they encourage its residents to soak in the warmth of the elements, both physically and mentally. The separation between man and nature diminishes in these rustic spaces while the perception of small indulgences – like high thread count sheets, flowing mosquito nets and thick towels – is heightened. The ultimate luxury in most of the cabanas, is the private porch, where hammocks gently swing guests into sync with Tulum’s laid-back rhythm.

We spent the early part of the day at PPP and it was such a great vibe. Good food, drinks, lovely beach spot. Music took a while to pick up, no heavy beats to dance up to 5pm when we were leaving but still enjoyable

I was very disappointed. We had one of the best rooms and ac was out, we had to move rooms. Had to argue with them multiple times. They charged us twice, horrible service. But the hotel itself is very nice. Lots of potential, but terrible management. Made our short trip awful because we spent most of our time in the lobby complaining than enjoying the stay. Our friends stayed 4 days later and had the same awful experience.

This spot was supposed to be everything and more. Instead since the moment we checked in we felt racism. We had two rooms one was our ones was our friends! Our friends were treated w 5 star service! mind you they are white WE are BLACK! They were immediately checked in and brought to their room. Meanwhile we were asked to wait by the beach. 2 hours later no one came to find us or check us in. We finally were checked in and our toilet wasn't working sewage backed up all over the bathroom floor and they fixed the toilet and left the mess. Then refused to change our room and said if we leave we wouldn't get a refund! After being persistent they said they would move us. It took them 4 hours to move us! They ended up moving us in the middle of HURRICANE GAMMA! While we are oceanfront in the middle of a storm. When we get to the other room its smaller than the first one! All night the casita was shaking and the roof was leaking. The next morning the hotel was in ruin bean bags were being thrown from the ceiling. Water didn't work food service took three hours. We decided it was no longer safe for us and asked to check out. We hadn't showered or ate all day! We requested a car to pick us up they never called for a car they said it would be here at 2pm. we waited an additional hour hungry and without a shower. They then said they would not compensate us for the horrible stay! and wouldn't even provide us with their name! Not to mention they couldnt even get us a sandwich from the kitchen!! Pretty much said would you like some chips? Leaving there was the best part of the day! The employees refused to give their names and refused to let us speak to management!! We were supposed to stay for 3 nights and could barley take one!! This hotel doesn't care for their guest! Especially the black ones! I paid the same as everyone else and should be treated equally! Our stay at Papaya Playa Project was unacceptable!! Don't waste your time or money you will be ignored!!

Visited PPP from 9/26 - 30. The beach staff wasn't that great. However, inside was amazing. Waiter Luis(Arturo) was great. Always attentive and knew what I wanted to drink. When you see him say "Dak said MY Mann". Hostess Arantxa were the best. She's always smiling and joking. When you see her yell "Simon" Pros: Attentive staff, good music, great location (away from a lot of traffic). We never had an issue getting a seat or Cabana. Right next to Tulum National park Cons: The lightning (I understand the vibe is jungle and low lights) however after 5 drinks you can't see ish. Beach staff wasn't as great as the inside staff. Otherwise it was a great trip #thesimons
