We stayEd for five amazing days and can't wait to go back. Let's start with the staff, they were amazingly nice and always greeted us with a smile. We stayed at the jungle cabanas which were always clean and bug free, then we moved to a beach front casita and we felt like we were in heaven. The food was... More

I can't speak enough about this beautiful architectural cluster of gems. Every room has it's own soulful vibe from beachfront to Tulum jungle view. Beautiful white sand beach was so relaxing and peaceful. Carlos and his team lend their holistic approach to their wonderful beach front massages. The staff was friendly and welcoming and more beautiful than the property itself.... More

We stayed at Papaya Playa for 5 days in July 2016. We had a great time. Details: - We had one of the cheaper rooms in the jungle part of the hotel. The room was small but it was very cozy, comfortable, clean and the AC is a life savior. - The restaurant is GREAT! The staff is so friendly,... More

We booked a fly and stay package online and arrived by shuttle (the hotel will provide shuttling to/from the airport for a fee) and they brought us these amazing drinks when we checked in. Our room was a Jungle Cabana but we were very close to the beach and could barely see bits of the ocean from the room. The... More

Papaya Playa is an incredible, quiet, and tucked away jewel in the Tulum area of Mexico. We instantly fell in love upon arriving, and the feeling only grew over our week-stay. From the beautiful beaches to the isolated feeling of the property to the rollicking Saturday night party, if you're coming to Tulum be sure to book a room here.... More

It is a very nice place, I was solo traveling and I really enjoyed myself. I had a standard single room, very simple but clean. The mosquito net on the bed works very well, that is all that matters in the jungle. Parties on Saturday are fun, lots of young people and good vibes. When I was there the music... More

The service at the beach was abysmal. 4 times I had to leave my beach "cabana" and go up to the bar for service. The beach attendants didn't even acknowledge half the guests on the beach.. And the "manager" was too busy on his laptop computer sat at the bar to even realize he had a problem. Really disappointing. Danny... More

We had a marvelous stay, this was our third visit to Papaya Playa. We came to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary. The accommodations are top notch, our Casita was elegant and spacious. We had an ocean front view to die for. The beach was maintained impeccably and never was over crowed. Everyone that works there are very friendly and were... More

The place is a few miles from the ruins, you can easily come by bike from Tulum, you can go there without staying in the hotel. The beach is simply stunning and it wasn't even crowded! Drinks were also fine and we had a really relaxing afternoon here. The waiters could have came a little bit more frequently.

This place will definitely ground you and shows how luxury can exist without extraordinary things! All here is so natural and in best possible balance with what's given by nature! Simply a magic spot that already the maya declared worthy to build one of their ritual buildings here!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Introducing, PAPAYA PLAYA, A DESIGN HOTELS™ PROJECT hitting Tulum, Mexico from December 6, 2011 to late 2012. Having sought far and wide for a place to create an authentic, nurturing experience, the 900 meter stretch of oceanfront paradise cocooned on the Caribbean coast of the Mayan Riviera was the perfect spot. Together with Emilio Heredia, owner of the existing Papaya Playa beach bungalow resort, Design Hotels™ is initiating the ultimate pop-up camp. Claus Sendlinger explains: “Our idea was to create a transitory, yet deeply culturally-rooted experience and we couldn’t have dreamed up a better place to make this happen. Capitalizing on the natural environment and multicultural character of Tulum, we quickly put together an international team of real visionaries, each enriching the experience with their own food, music, design or wellness concept. The enthusiasm and creative energy of everyone involved enabled us to renovate the camp and put together a holistic program within a very short period of time.” So come December, the authentic-pleasure seekers have a new raw-luxe camp they can sink and rub their feet into. Eighty-five cabañas have been renovated by the Design Hotels™ creative team. Integrating local materials and building techniques, they encourage its residents to soak in the warmth of the elements, both physically and mentally. The separation between man and nature diminishes in these rustic spaces while the perception of small indulgences – like high thread count sheets, flowing mosquito nets and thick towels – is heightened. The ultimate luxury in most of the cabañas, is the private porch, where hammocks gently swing guests into sync with Tulum’s laid-back rhythm. ... more   less
