Detailed Reviews
Playa Selva was the perfect place for our Tulum vacation! The property is incredibly beautiful and even though it's right on the beach they've left the jungle in tack so you get the best of both. We stayed in Casa Playa which is a two-story house with it's own kitchen. It has an awesome porch with a nice view of the ocean and having our own kitchen was great, though the shared kitchen looked great too. This is a great area of the beach because there aren't any big hotels close by so the beach is quieter than other areas. They also have beach toys and bikes available to use which was awesome! The staff was so kind and hard working. I didn't know in advance but they clean your room everyday, which was so nice because they cleaned up the sand from the floor and provided fresh towels. Playa Selva is also in a perfect location because it's easily walkable to all of the best restaurants in the hotel zone but it's not surrounded by the clubs and crowds. Even the Wifi was fast and pretty reliable! The only negatives were things that would apply to any hotel in this price range in Tulum: distant club music at night (not too loud), no A/C (which I was worried about but didn't bother us at all), seaweed (seasonal issue but if you don't know what I'm talking about look it up), and a few bugs. We hardly had any mosquitos though! I spent hours trying to find the best place to stay in Tulum on a budget and this is it! If we return we will absolutely stay at Playa Selva again!

My adult daughter and I stayed at Playa Selva for six nights toward the end of November and found it to be exactly what we were hoping for. We wanted a reasonably priced property on the beach in the playa hotel zone. Almost all of the other hotel options were double or triple the price for the same area of the beach. Granted, many of those properties have pools and restaurants, but that was not the most important thing on our list. We wanted a nice, clean bungalow on the best part of the beach. Playa Selva delivered much more than that! We stayed in the upstairs king size room called La Palma, and it was perfect. Big balcony with chairs and a hammock, high ceilings, a comfy bed, plenty of closet and drawer space, mosquito net, and a very spacious bathroom area. The rooms were cleaned everyday which was a nice surprise. These bungalows do not come with A/C but we honestly did not need it at all. There is a fan in the room and the natural breeze was wonderful. We only experienced a couple mosquitos the whole week so that wasn't really an issue. The one thing I do wish the rooms offered, or would accommodate, is a hairdryer. So, if you're the type of person who wants to dry and style your hair with a hairdryer, it's not available at this property even if you bring your own. Not a big deal, my hair and I had a fantastic time anyway haha :-) The communal kitchen was much appreciated with assigned fridge space and full cooking supplies (though we did not cook during our stay). Fresh coffee available to all the guests and plenty of clean drinking water was available at all times. The beach was quiet and beautiful with fine white sand and gentle waves; the best area for swimming. Plenty of shade under the palapas or sun to tan. The last time we were in Tulum there was a lot of seaweed which was a problem, but this time there was none so that was great. There were kayaks and beach toys available for free and inexpensive bike rentals which provided great fun to explore the area since we did not rent a car this trip. A short five minute walk either way down the beach will get you to more action with properties providing restaurants and more of a party atmosphere if you're wanting that for a while. But, it was always so nice to know we could walk back to the peace of Playa Selva. The staff were all amazing and kind, and Pepe was especially gracious and helpful. I can't say enough great things about this property, I would definitely stay here again!

We were in Tulum 12 years ago and have fond memories of our quiet beachfront room, listening to the ocean and birds and walking along the beach. We decided to come back for those reasons but did not realize that Tulum is very different and commercial now. What a shock it was for us who are in our 60's and were looking for another relaxing beach experience. Playa Selva to the rescue! Playa Selva is an oasis in the hustle and bustle of Tulum beach. It is located at the quiet southern end of the beach within easy walking distance of the restaurants and nightlife if you like that. The resort is very well maintained by Mauritio and manager Pepe who make you feel very welcome. We stayed in the La Duna room which was very nicely positioned near the beach with clean and comfortable amenities. I loved the communal kitchen where we met other fellow travelers and could do some light meal prep. Loved the vibe, its small size and oceanfront location. The beach is wonderful and we appreciated the comfortable beach beds and quiet location. Please do not hesitate to book Playa Selva if you want to come to Tulum but do not want to be in the middle of the party scene. It is the only place left that we could see that would give you this feeling of what Tulum used to be. Thank you Playa Selva for keeping our memories of Tulum alive.

The houses are clean and not to close to each other which makes it really nice. there is sand all around the houses and you don´t need shoes to walk around. there is a kitchen for everyone to use with an icebox for every house so you can put your food inside. Mauricio is one of the nicest people we´ve ever met. He is the owner of Playa Selva and with Bebe he can help you with every need. We had such a great time talking to him and his brother. Playa Selva is one of the rare places in Tulum which is not a Beach Club or Club. That´s the problem in Tulum right now: BeachClub next to BeachClub. Loud music until 1 am. it is awful. Tulum was such a quiet and relaxed place 5 years ago and now Playa Selva is almost one of the last places which is just beach, palm trees and no music. A place to relax and chill. A place to feel like home.

We highly recommend Playa Selva!!!
We have been visiting Tulum for the past 20 years and this was the first time at Playa Selva. The location is great!!
Been able to cook make us save a lot of money (Tulum is very expensive). The house was comfortable, no air conditioning but we had a nice breeze from the ocean.
The staff is great and very discreet.
We will definitely coming back.

Playa Selva is a wonderful place to chill at the beach and be close to nature. Very well kept and clean with friendly and helpful staff. Be aware that there is no A/C and our unit did not have screens on the main level so there were some bug bites. We had a kitchen with range and large fridge and made many of our meals. The beach is beautiful and there is not much foot traffic in this part of the beach. Restaurants are expensive in Tulum. My only complaint is that on weekend nights the nearby clubs have loud music until 5 am. Most people are probably not sensitive to it but the bass drove me crazy. I found the only way I could sleep was to use noise canceling headphones.

This place is a hidden gem! This house has an access to a private part of the best beach on earth. Unlike the nearby resorts, there is much less density of people which is especially great given COVID. The hosts are very friendly and gave us a lot of local tips, and helped us to schedule sailing in the lagune. The house was nice and clean, with an amazing view from the rooftop. It might not blow up your mind, but we enjoyed more its simplicity. We extended our trip by a few days and would stay there again!

From the moment when I was greeted by Pepe- I felt so relaxed... The bungalows are steps from shoreline making it much easier to wake up quick and watch the sunrise in the morning. That was extra special. The beach was obviously amazing. I enjoyed being able to bring my own food, to cook, eat and drink in peace when I wanted. Everything was so clean. My room was tidied up each morning by the Playa Selva crew on site. (There is warm water in the shower and towels.) There is a surf school on the beach - these guys have a lot of adventure to offer from kite surfing, surfing, SUP, cenote tours etc. @siankite Everything you want out of the real Tulum is right at Playa Selva. The location of the property is in the perfect spot on the beach road if you want to venture out and explore nearby. I felt safe and looked after! Thank you everyone who made my stay memorable. I will definitely be returning soon <3

Perfect beach location. Clean and well appointed room. Love the community kitchen for keeping food in the refrigerator and cooking meals. Great coffee, plenty of filtered water. Pepe is very attentive and helpful to guests. Good price for such an excellent location on the beach. Our only minor negative is the weak wifi signal in the room and on the beach but there is strong wifi in the kitchen so it is possible to connect if needed. I would definitely recommend Playa Selvs.

The Playa Selva is a wonderful place to stay Tulum. The bungalows are great and the location is in front of the sea next to the main attractions of the place. In addition, it has a communal kitchen. Considering Tulum's prices are pretty high, this is a wonderful option to save on food. I loved the place, the atmosphere and highly recommend it.

Jody,
I have stayed at Playa Selva twice in the past year. I'm from Upper Michigan and have traveled to Mexico yearly in the past 25 years. I too was concerned with the payment options for Playa Selva. One of the addresses they use for Paypal is in Switzerland! It looks funky - but it is worked fine for me. It was totally safe when I used it. The owner (Manuela) lives in Switzerland and employs a very good man (Pepe) to run the property in Mexico. That's why it looks strange. I was completely satisfied with Playa Selva. I had absolutely no trouble with their payment options. I found them trustworthy. For what it's worth, I would go there again in a heartbeat! I hope my comments are helpful. Go and enjoy Playa Selva.
We have had really good luck with the Happy Shuttle - It is inexpensive and reliable. We only get a one way fare from Cancun to Tulum - We usually set up our ride back to the airport with one of the local cab drivers.
