This was my comeback tour… we gave this hotel a second opportunity and the service was AMAZING! They really cared and they were amazing with my kid! Like out of this world. The pool, beach and restaurants were good. The food definitely was much better than last time, the only thing is I think it is a little overpriced vs other amazing hotels in the area regarding the food, other than that it didn’t disappoint…

Absolutely outstanding!!! This was one of the best trips we have ever had. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary here and it was a magical trip. The property is gorgeous. Our suite with the rooftop plunge pool looking out to the ocean was decadent. Everyday was paradise here. And what really made the trip was the staff. They attended to our every need. First I have to give a shout-out to Alejandro the front desk manager. He is one of the reasons we will be back! He made our stay exceptional and even added a few surprises for our anniversary. When we had a problem in our room he not only made up for it, corrected it, he brought our stay to the next level. Alejandro is amazing and the property is very lucky to have him. We can’t thank him enough for all he did to make us feel extra special. I also have to shout out Eric and Oliver who took great care Of us at the pool each day! These two are amazing and got to know us so well they anticipated what we wanted before we even ordered! Andrea-the restaurant manager always greeted us with a smile and also is an outstanding staff member. Daniella and Maria as well. Excellent service. Our butler Maria was amazing and attended to our needs. This staff makes this already fabulous property even more fabulous. Also the food at every restaurant is delicious. We even had a private beachside dinner and felt like royalty! I can’t say enough about this property. We will be back every year!

Having gone to Mexico 1-2 times per year over the last 20+ years, I was getting a little burnt out. Most of the resorts were average at best and besides the great weather, my wife and I needed to find a different go to destination. However, Mexico's appeal is the 3 hour flight you don't get when going abroad. We have stayed at top hotels in Europe, Asia and Africa and Rosewood Mayakoba ranks right up there. We went to Rosewood on a recommendation and from the moment we got there to the moment we left, it was amazing. The room was awesome...big, clean, comfortable, private, etc. The hotel grounds are spectacular. Probably the most surprising was the food. Every meal my wife and I had, we looked at each other in disbelief. We could not believe how fresh, innovative, romantic and tasty everything was. Our butler, Walter, was also amazing as were the rest of the hotel staff we encountered. I highly recommend this as your next getaway!

In my quixotic search for serenity on vacation, I look to avoid certain anxiety-inducing situations, both en route to and from my destination and once there. Airport transfers, check-in and check-out, the ease of getting a decent meal or booking a side trip, all factor in my stress quotient, or SQ. If stress is high, there’s no joy in Mudville, and I feel like I could have saved my money staying home. If stress is low, vacation mission accomplished. Rosewood Mayakoba specializes in stress reduction. The non-stop flights from the New York area to Cancun are frequent and reasonably priced. The Cancun Airport is well organized, efficient, and completely bilingual. Our hotel concierge, Yanett, had provided us with all necessary COVID and immigration screening forms in advance, as well as arranging a car service for airport pickup. Our driver Abraham provided us with the Rosewood wifi password (hi-speed, no issues, no fee) as well as our choice of cold water or cold Corona splits. The Mayakoba complex is well under an hour south of Cancun, occupying what amounts to a nature preserve halfway between Cancun and Tulum. Inside the preserve, you can actually choose among four hotels: Banyan, Fairmount (currently closed), Andaz, and Rosewood. Rosewood is the crown jewel of this crowd, with all due respect to the others. Less than two hours from touchdown, I sat in an electric-powered, cabana-covered, open wooden boat seating perhaps ten. Ours had my family of three, the boat captain, and our butler, who promptly offered bottles of local fruit punches, offering tequila spike upon request. The small fleet of boats take you from reception to your room, wending your way through lagoons in a mangrove forest, the 129 villas and suites lining the waterfront at discrete distance from one another, save for those facing the beach and the Gulf of Mexico. Your boat stops at your private dock. Your bags are already in your room. You marvel at the spaciousness of the accommodations, including bathroom larger than a suite at the W. Most (all?) rooms have a plunge pool on the back deck, where you can enjoy a flute of champagne with your feet in the water immediately. The welcome package includes fresh fruit and drink, and a private butler assigned to your room to answer your questions or get you a dinner reservation. We were permitted to check in a couple of hours before official check-in time, but that might have been due to the lower occupancy of a late August arrival. We asked for and received a modestly late check out (two-hour extension), and neither of these gratuities should have surprised us. Staff were unfailingly polite, accommodating, and genuine throughout our stay. Rosewood features modern white stucco-style concrete and medium brown woods throughout. There are no carpets, only marble. The sleek, cool architecture and furnishings contribute to a feeling that temperatures are several degrees lower than they probably are, and I never felt the suffocating humidity I have felt in Florida or South Carolina in the same time frame. This is an eco-friendly resort that has sacrificed nothing in amenities or accommodations. They have simply built smarter. Bottled water comes in bottles, as do the variety of fruit punches, juices, even soft drinks. The only pieces of plastic I found in my room were the phones and the toilet seat. The resort has at least four pools by my count, including two free form family pools, a good-sized lap-style pool within the Sense spa grounds, and one for adults only. This is very much a kid-friendly facility that features a restaurant off-limits to children in addition to the multiple dining options for families. In-room dining is particularly well-executed, with food arriving timely, hot, and well presented. The same app lets you order delivery of that full menu to your seating lounge at the spa or your cabana at the pool. Room service will never be the same for me. There are multiple nods to the romantic. Those quiet wooden boats? You can book a candle-lit dinner for two on board, or a private wine cellar if you prefer indoors. I think there’s a cigar lounge, although I confess I wouldn’t know. Getting around: complimentary bikes with your room number displayed on the basket, so you won’t lose track of yours. Golf cart pick up available on request or regular intervals if you prefer to leave the biking to others. Walking is also an option, much of that depending on where your rooms are located relative to the beach, pools, or restaurants. Things to do: beach (including kayaking, paddle boarding, or sailing on your own catamaran, all complimentary), pool (baby pools and hot tubs included), golf (the highly regarded El Chameleon, where the coati run free, especially after the last golfer has finished for the day), tennis (traditional and paddle), and archery. Also on the Mayakoba reserve: el Pueblito, a modest replica of a traditional Mexican village, complete with restaurants, gift shops, coffee shops, and an arcade. Like all traditional villages, the centerpiece is a Catholic church. Nearby is fine example of a cenote, or sinkhole, where your local guide will walk you down a few steps into an underground pond with channels leading to the sea. Duck under the low-hanging entrance, and you’ll see clear water, sleeping bats, stalactites, and millions of years of geology on display. There are cenotes throughout the area, and each offers a unique experience. I had planned on naming names of the many helpful staff at Rosewood, but I’ve chosen not to do so (other than Yanett), for fear of leaving someone out. Universally wonderful people, they made our experience memorable in the best sense of the word. I’ve left out the many off-site activities available, but if you’re able to invest a day, drive to Chichen Itza, center of the Mayan universe, about two hours west of the coast. Tulum is less than an hour to the south, and the Gulf of Mexico beckons for serious water-bound adventures. A couple of final notes: the food is fresh, tasteful, and tastefully presented. It’s a little spendy, but not outrageously so. Comments complaining about pricing might be misplaced. These are well sourced, finely prepared meals, and I suspect the ingredients must be shipped in from distance. I can assure those distressed that these prices are well within bounds for five star hotels and resorts, and unlike many expensive hotel restaurants, the food here is uniformly good. There is still a pandemic going on. Staff take precautions, but they indulge guests who don’t. Nobody judges you. They provide free COVID testing for guests who need proof to return to the U.S. Finally, I’ll note I never saw anyone angry during my stay. Not guests; not staff. Everyone was good natured, patient, and polite. There were moments when I was transported to another time, before social media and polarizing discourse. I need more moments like these in my life. I suspect, so do you.

I spent about a month with my partner and pup at the Rosewood Mayakoba and can confidently say this will be the only hotel in Mexico we go to from now on. Rooms: 5/5. The best part of the hotel has to be the villas. We had a suite on the lagoon with a little yard for our dog and it was more than enough space for us to both work from. The aesthetic was very beachy and minimal, similar to a 1hotel. My only gripe with the room was that the wifi could not sustain hour-long zoom calls. Wish there was a business centre in the resort with high-speed internet for when I needed to jump on zoom calls, maybe that’s something they will introduce in the future now that everyone works remotely. Food: 4/5. The breakfast at this hotel was unbelievable. It was something my partner and I could not miss out on every morning. Sitting by the pool, drinking fresh-pressed juice and having a high-quality omelette was a literal dream. Try the donuts and bagels there! They are delicious. The second-best restaurant at the hotel was their lunch restaurant on the beach. Delicious quesadillas and one day we were lucky enough to get a whole fish served to us, what a treat! Every Wednesday we did do the communal dinner at the outdoor restaurant, and we ended up meeting a lot of people at the hotel we ended up staying in touch with. Attending this dinner is also a must. I will say though we had the majority of our dinners at the Bayan or Fairmont, unfortunately, I think those hotels beat the Rosewood for food. If you are in the Mayakoba, would highly recommend going to the Italian and Thai restaurant at the Bayan, did not disappoint. My biggest critique of the hotel would be their room service menu. Since we stayed for a month, some nights we just wanted to stay in and have simple food. The burgers and pasta on the room service menu were inedible, hopefully, it changes when we go back. Service: 5/5. I wish I had written down the names of everyone who made our stay special. I do remember Maria, the epitome of grace! She always attended our communal dinners, once overheard me complaining about getting sent boring fruit to the hotel and the very next day I had exotic fruit delivered to my doorstep! Sylvia was one of our hosts and an incredibly sweet person, I remember she bought our dog some food from a pet store near her home. The manager at the Rosewood also did everything possible to make us feel part of the Rosewood family. He even organized a goodbye party for us with the staff on our very last day at the resort. Thank you to everyone!
