2023 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
Mexico's only 5-Star rated independent hotel by Forbes Travel Guide, Hotel Esencia is a 50-acre private estate, with an awe-inspiring 500 meter beachfront, award winning spa, three restaurants, and an indulgent atmosphere fitting of royalty. In fact, the estate was once the exclusive beach-side retreat of an Italian duchess. Though friendly, warm and generous, the duchess demands the very best and Esencia still benefits from her superior taste, her impeccable style, and her zest for life. We are proud to announce that in 2023 Hotel Esencia was voted #19 on the list of the "World's 50 Best Hotels" as chosen by 580 luxury travel professionals who were asked to name their 7 favorite hotel visits during the past 5 years.

What an amazing place! From the moment you arrive on this property, you know you are in a special place. The grounds are stunning...pristine beaches and beautiful jungle. The food is exceptional...3 great restaurants on property to choose from. But, the best part of this place is the team of people that makes it go. From David & Alexa on the concierge team, to Augustine in the bar and restaurant area, to Omar at the beach, to Barracuda and Pascual for activities...each and everyone makes you feel at home. We were a year between our previous stay and most recent stay, and the team there still remembered us and greeted us like regular guests. Can't wait to get back!

Hotel Esencia is an enchanting oasis of total relaxation and luxury. Embarking on a journey through the soulful expanses of Hotel Esencia, one is gently escorted through a wondrous realm where meticulous luxury and profound tranquility converge in a heartfelt embrace. Nestled in the breathtaking expanse of the Riviera Maya, this haven unfurls a tapestry that gracefully marries nature’s pristine beauty with an unspoken, yet palpably reverent luxury. The spa, drenched in the ancient wisdom of Mayan healing arts, stands as a sanctuary where time seemingly dissolves, leaving in its wake a space for rejuvenation and introspective serenity. The incorporation of an infrared laser sauna hints at a thoughtful blending of tradition and modernity, respecting ancient practices while gracefully intertwining contemporary wellness innovations. Each treatment, rooted in ancient Mayan healing, whispers tales of times gone by, utilizing herbs plucked from the hotel’s own flourishing gardens. The spiritual and physical recalibration offered here, under the gentle hands of skilled therapists, is an immersive journey through tranquility, grounded in the rich heritage of the locale. Vanessa and Guadalupe are the most amazing therapists at the spa. Dining within the enveloping walls of Hotel Esencia extends beyond a mere meal, evolving into a symphony where Mexican and Japanese culinary arts dance in a seamless, enchanting ballet of flavors. Here, every dish is a celebration, a story told through vibrant flavors, textures, and aromas that linger tenderly in both memory and palate, enticing one to return and relish the narrative again. I highly recommend Beefbar, Mixtura and Taiyo when you visit.

Where to begin...This is one of the most special places I've ever been. If you are considering a trip here, DO IT. You will not be disappointed. No details is forgotten, and every element of the hotel is thoughtful, intentional, and spilling over with effortless style and quiet luxury. Upon arrival, we were wowed by the grounds, from the crystal blue waters to the lush vegetation, white sand beach and chic decor. The hotel is located on a cove that feels off the beaten path and undiscovered, despite the proximity to Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Everything is done in impeccable taste, yet still comfortable and without ostentation. Each room comes with a speaker and curated playlist, and bookshelves are stocked with gorgeous coffee table books for browsing. There are so many small touches throughout the hotel that make it special - from a stack of hand-drawn postcards in each room, featuring various scenes from the property, to a fun beach tote each guest is given upon arrival to bring home. The team working at Hotel Esencia is incredible. You are put in touch via text with a personal concierge at the beginning of the stay. Throughout the trip, I was able to quickly send him a text asking questions from spa reservation availability to where the amazing coffee was from that was delivered to our room each morning. Every person we interacted on staff gave just the right amount of service and attention - they were there when you needed them and incredibly gracious without overdoing it. The food is phenomenal. There are three different dining options - a more casual beachside spot (Mistura) for breakfast, lunch, and drinks; a poolside sushi restaurant (Taiyo); and a more upscale eatery called Beef Bar with everything from artisan pizzas to spaghetti with lobster. Don't miss the tableside guacamole and fish tacos at Mistura. I've heard the speakeasy is not to be missed; it was closed during our stay (we went during the off-season). Our room in the main house (702) had its own plunge pool and gorgeous deck overlooking the two pools and beach. Very centrally located. At night, my husband and I played chess in the downstairs den area with cocktails before enjoying dinner. There are so many stunning rooms and outdoor spots around the property to discover. Do not miss the excursion to see the nearby lagoon (10 minute walk) with Pasqual, who also serves as the hotel's lifeguard. We paddleboarded into the lagoon where we were able to swim with and (even touch!) manatees - they were so gentle and beautiful! The spa is a sanctuary and was the best massage I've had. Kevin Wendle has created something truly spectacular in Hotel Esencia, and we can't wait to return.

We visited Hotel Esencia for my wife’s birthday as it’s been on the bucket list for awhile. From the moment we sat in the private transfer from the airport, everything lived up to or exceeded our expectations. The property is set amongst lush vegetation creating a luxuriously private atmosphere. Lili was our concierge and made sure all our needs were met. It rained every evening during our 4 night stay but we didn’t mind as it made it feel even more romantic. Lunches from Mistura were amazing and the Esencia club was my favorite. I had the best margarita on the last day of our stay. We kayaked with the manatees an activity Lili suggested that we totally enjoyed and put the cherry on top for the whole trip. Barracuda was an awesome tour guide and got some amazing footage. Hotel Esencia is an amazing property and staff. We’re already planning our return!!

Dear Rowangenre, We are so grateful you and your wife decided to visit us at Hotel Esencia! We're thrilled to hear about the seamless experience you had from the moment you arrived to the Riviera Maya, and that you felt the exclusivity we strive to create where our dense jungle meets the white sands of Xpu-Ha. That Esencia club sandwhich is certainly one of my favorites as well, and I completely understand why you thought it was delicious! We have an incredibly diverse food and beverage program ranging from Sushi, to Kobe beef, authentic regional Mexican food, and a few comfort items like the club or penne pomodoro. Our goal is that we have plenty of options to sustain a week long stay! It's wonderful to hear that you embarked on our manatee activity, as it surely creates lifetime memories. We are eagerly awaiting your return, and truly appreciate you staying with us!!

Staying at Hotel Esencia was an incredible experience. My wife and I were both truly able to fully relax and disconnect. From the design of the rooms, the great restaurants, spa facilities, to how every member of staff made you feel completely at home. It’s clear that the entire team at the hotel all care deeply about the design details, alongside providing an exceptional experience at every turn. Let’s talk about some of those details. The rooms come with iPods featuring curated playlists so you never needed to think about what music to listen to. Never miss a turndown service to enjoy a little surprise when you return your room. Be sure to check out “The Speakeasy” if it’s open when you’re there. Finally, grab a cocktail at the Beach Bar and stare at the ocean watching the sun go down. None of this amazing experience couldn’t have been possible without the great people on the team we met during our stay. A very special mention for the following folks. Kennedy, who was the kindest, most wonderful host, for nearly all our dining experiences at Beef Bar. Barracuda, the incredible guide who took us to the lagoon where we got to stand up paddle board, snorkel and see a manatee (a first for us). Moises, who went out of his way to help us with dining questions and finding the Speakeasy. Finally, Alex, on the concierge team who made everything happen, making our stay as effortless as possible. If you’re looking for a secluded escape to a place you never want to leave, then definitely consider Hotel Esencia for your next adventure.

Dear Adrian, We simply don't have the words that could adequately express our appreciation for this raving review! For all of us at Hotel Esencia, the details really do matter. We understand that feeling the level of comfort you experience at home, is an emotion you seek also while on vacation. We want your senses to be enlivened through thoughtfully curated spaces like our speakeasy, or artisanally hand-crafted turndown amenities. Of course, the visit wouldn't be complete without the unique memories made with the ladies and gentlemen who work on property every day. Kennedy was recently recognized as our team member with the most name mentions by quite a margin, and it's no secret as to why! We hope that these fond moments serve as the first of many, and that we have the opportunity to welcome you to your home away from home very soon. Best, Sean Murphy Managing Director Hotel Esencia

This is a spectacular hotel. A real oasis amongst the mega hotels along the coast; you feel close to nature and the setting feels unspoilt. It’s small with 35 odd rooms. Lots of wildlife (birds, raccoons etc in the “jungle area”). Beautiful beach; the hotel does a great job of getting rid of weed keeping it perfect. Rooms are well decorated, great attention to detail. The staff are very personable, nothing is too much trouble. This creates a very relaxed atmosphere. Make sure you ask the receptionist about visiting the lagoon in the abandoned hotel; an incredible experience. They bring coffee and pastries to your room in the morning; this is a really good touch. If I was to rate it relative to some of the hotels I have stayed at in the Caribbean, it rates right up there. It’s almost perfection. There is however a but. The food and drink is good; simple but to a high standard. But the prices are ridiculous by any standard; US$10 for a Diet Coke, US$23 for a side of fries, pizzas from US$40; US$74 for a 300g rib eye etc (plus 20% service). The coast is not cheap but this is to a different level and i do not think it can be defended. Irrespective of whether you can afford it, I don’t enjoy paying over the odds and that results in me watching the pennies and that impacts on the experience. The hotel needs to have a reality check - others have raised this as well and I am not sure the message is getting through. My suggestion to the hotel; put up your room rates marginally if the high profit margins you are making from food and drinks is critical to the business model and / or offer meal plans. (Please note I am not complaining about the room rates). That all said, a really great hotel. Highly recommended subject to the price of food and drink.

Dear GSUKKENT, A million thanks for your lovely comments. “Best” is certainly something we aspire to every day! Hotel Esencia is a labor of love for me. With just 47 rooms I set out to create a magical place to welcome my friends and family, as a hobby more than anything. As such, I always strive to be fair with our menu pricing and constantly benchmark our prices against all of our competitors. I’ve personally just gone back in to review this and you’re right, though our prices have actually not been increased, our menus are in Mexican pesos. The US dollar has recently dropped by more than 20% against the peso - so anyone paying in dollars has been feeling that difference. As of today I’ve made some price adjustments and most of our sides for example are now US$14 or less, down from $17 plus tax and service. We are also currently running a promotion through November offering a $100 PER DAY food and beverage credit to make our guests feel that they are getting a better value while they are here prior to our high demand winter season. I am extremely grateful for your feedback as I always want to know what my guests are thinking. I hope we have the chance to welcome you back one day soon! Kevin Wendle Owner and CEO

Hotel Esencia exceeded our expectations on every level!  I must say that any seasoned traveler must experience this hidden gem at least once. We are already planning our trip back this winter. Honestly the photos just don’t do this place justice. It’s all so truly majestic and you can’t capture the feeling of being immersed in this natural paradise with any photo or video. The arrival experience was thoroughly delightful. There’s no sign for Hotel Esencia, the entrance is tiny and tucked away behind verdant jungle bushes. Our driver of course knew exactly where to bring us, and what awaited us on arrival was so unique I don’t even want to give it away.  Within minutes you’re facing the most spectacular crystal clear blue water sea, like something out of a movie. You have the beach all to yourself as there are no other resorts on either side, just nature, so you feel like you’re on a deserted fantasy island somewhere. We booked the entry level jungle suite which was even more spacious and closer to the beach than we expected, white-washed from top to bottom with pops of bright colors and even some mid-century antiques, and SO chic!  The suite itself was in brand new, perfect condition but with an old world feeling, an authenticity that makes you feel like you’re staying at the estate of a well travelled aristocratic Mexican friend. We found so many unique and personal touches around every corner and were constantly amazed at the attention to detail here, inside and outside of our suite. Kudos to the extraordinary kindness of the staff who anticipated our every need without being overbearing. And the food! After trying all three restaurants we cancelled our plans to go elsewhere, it was all that good and we just wanted to savor this little paradise every last minute. Our personal concierge Andres, who was so lovely, suggested many interesting activities close by, but it was hard to get us motivated to leave our private beach palapa with fresh sushi, ceviche and tacos just the push of a button away. Thank you Hotel Esencia!

Dear Adriana, This review was an absolute pleasure to read! Thank you for staying with us, taking the time to write these remarks, and for kindly sharing them with likeminded travelers all over the world!! Internally we often comment as a team about how it's impossible to share Hotel Esencia with others through photos and videos, as there is an unparalleled sense of place one has to feel during the arrival experience which you found last week navigating through our dense jungle canopy towards the sea. We're happy to hear it felt like your own "fantasy island", as it is certainly a goal of ours to create that experience! The Jungle Suites are just a few steps from the Ocean and your private beach palapa with fresh sushi, ceviche, or taco options at the press of a button. I have to use a few of your own choice words since you described the offerings best! Of course the experience would not be complete without our lovely team, who take pride in providing the best personalized service in the entire Riviera Maya. We'll see you soon Adriana, thank you for choosing Hotel Esencia! Sincerely, Sean Murphy Managing Director Hotel Esencia, Xpu Ha

This is a good hotel. The spa is very special and the staff are lovely but the pricing in this hotel is insane. The cheapest room in the hotel that should have cost $695 is $2000. A simple meal with guacamole and chips and tacos and margaritas was $650. The beds were ok but this hotel was priced more expensively that the Cheval Blanc hotel in Paris. It's crazy. I know the hotels suffered during the pandemic but I really think hotel rooms and the food you buy there shouldn't be prohibitively expensive like this one.

Dear Culture218772, I regret that I was not at the hotel during your visit and missed the chance to greet you personally. I was pleased to read your kind words about our spa and our service, and I sincerely appreciate your overall feedback. We are a small family business with just 47 rooms, and always want to know what are customers are thinking. Our room prices are dynamic and are updated automatically by the software we use to reflect supply and demand. Today I am seeing online that our entry level Jungle Suites are being offered next week at $899/night, while the hotel in Paris you reference is asking $4100/night for an entry level room. Our standard margaritas are currently priced at $28, our fresh fish or shrimp tacos are $15 each (3 = $45), and guacamole with chips made table-side is $28. Top shelf alcohol of course is more expensive, and in Mexico we are disadvantaged by extremely high import taxes on alcohol, as much as 400%. I know on vacation that when you’re having a good time these prices can add up! Rest assured that we do constant benchmarking against other luxury hotels in the region to be sure that our pricing is on par with our peers. The really good news is that beginning this month and into October we are running a promotion offering a $100/day food and beverage credit - so in fact you could theoretically have a margarita, guacamole, and tacos nearly for free every day, not counting tax and tip. There are certainly less expensive hotel options in the region however we are proud to be the only hotel within an hour of Tulum that has been awarded with Forbes Travel Guide's highly coveted 5 star rating. We are in fact the only independent hotel in all of Mexico to achieve this. Over the past four years Forbes has sent 5 different mystery shoppers to evaluate us on 920 points of service, cuisine and comfort. I am so proud of my staff and thank you for your extremely kind words about them. I live here with my family myself and we’ve been extremely diligent to attract and keep only the best of the best, and of course there’s a high price we pay for that as well, but they are like family to us and deserve every peso. Thanks so much for choosing Hotel Esencia for your holiday. I hope we have the chance to welcome you back again one day soon. Sincerely, Kevin Wendle Owner and CEO Hotel Esencia

Hotel Esencia is a hidden gem in paradise. The location, resort and food was exceptional. We really enjoyed the property and spa. I have been to several spas and I can say this is one of the top spa experiences I received. The entire experience from the steam to massage was exceptional. The circular spa structure provides a unique experience for the guest. The only thing to be aware of is that the food and drink prices are extremely high compared to other boutique resorts in the area. For example, a regular margarita here is $40 USD compared to other resorts which are $20 USD. Expect to spend $500-$1000 USD per day on food and alcohol in this resort. Besides that, everything else was a 5 star experience.

Dear wanderingsoul32, This is truly a remarkable five star review, and we are grateful for the raving feedback about the experience at Hotel Esencia. Thank you for taking the time to write about your visit, and also for staying with us! When describing the resort, "hidden gem" is one of the best ways to do so. We have avoided a large sign on the highway for nearly a decade and appreciate you recognizing the sense of place created throughout the grounds as a result. The Spa complements the senses through ancient Mayan rituals and state of the art amenities. We aim to provide something unique to our property, and once again thank you for the recognition! Our goal in our culinary division is to provide the highest quality ingredients possible, and some of our premium items do reflect a higher value. With that being said, we do believe in options for our guests...serving both house drinks and premium cocktails based on preference. We hope to see you again soon at our little slice of paradise. Genuine gratitude for the fabulous review, and for highlighting your five star experience at Hotel Esencia! Sincerely, Sean Murphy Managing Director Hotel Esencia
