Me and my boyfriend stayed 9 days at Riviera del Sol this February.
We had a nice time there: the staff was very helpful and supported us with many things (e.g. calling transport shuttle to airport, ordering pizza during a heavy rainy evening etc).
The breakfast is very good and healthy, with homemade yogurt and fresh fruit always available.
There is a nice pool area, where we enjoyed chilling in the afternoon.
The location is very central; this means also a bit of noise (which is easily solvable with ear plugs for those who are light sleepers).

Love it! Only place I stay when traveling through Playa Del Carmen! Very cute boutique hotel around the corner from 5th Avenue. Rooms are really pretty and decorated nicely. Bathroom was super cute too. They provide toiletries and a coffee maker that uses pods. Pods can be purchased from front desk for $1 each. Pool area is manicured with lots of greenery. Pool is small but very tranquil. Air conditioning in rooms work great. Super clean hotel. Front desk staff are all nice. Breakfast is inexpensive and delicious. Some people complain of the noise from 5th avenue but I hardly heard anything. Bring earplugs just in case. There is a place across the street that has live music and dancing. Can get loud but hey your here on vacation so lighten up! I’ve stayed here several times and always come back!

Me and my small family (girlfriend and 1 1/2 year old boy) stayed here for five nights in february 2020. We had some problem with our airline who lost our stroller and the receptionist Victor helped us a lot. Other good things about this place is the breakfast and the clean and beautiful surroundings(there is a nice lounge and also around the pool the staff in charge did a great job with plants and trees and made it into an Oasis. The room was great. The cleaning staff really on point. Also I did yoga with the theacher Theresa and I can recomend her. So why not a full 5 star review? The wifi hardly worked (we informed the staff) and the pool was cold at times. But anyway I would still recomend a visit.

The photos on the internet are not recent. The pool area was a construction site. The rooms are noisy and next to a bar that played heavy metal music all night long. The staff didn't want to help at all and I was left for an hour in the reception before I was shown to my room.
I would avoid this property if you have children, the area around the pool is not safe,

Nice hotel on a noisy street. Good breakfast included. Everything in the hotel works which is rare in Mexico. Unfortunately Playa Del Carmen is now charging $1 per hour. If you don’t pay they boot your car.

This place was a lot more tired then what the photos made out. We were hoping for cute, romantic and authentic in style with access to a bar and light food. What we got was old bare linen and towels, unstaffed bar and basic food on offer for breakfast that seemed expensive. The staff were nice and helpful. Even though it was rundown it was still clean. Next time I'd spend more and stay elsewhere.

I want to start this review by thanking the housekeepers for keeping this please very clean at all times. The location is perfect to enjoy your vacations at its best. It is only 1 minute walking off 5 Avenida and 3 minutes away from Mamitas Playa. As a mom was perfect to swim with my child in the morning then take a walk on 5th avenue and see the sunset at the beach before going back to 5 Avenida to have diner and go back to our room .

The place, the rooms, the staff its all perfect. Thats why I have mixed feelings writing this review. We booked for 3 night but had to leave after one. One month ago, a bar opened across the street. The music in this bar is sooo loud, I never ever experienced something like this before. There werent even people in the bar and they still kept on playing music until 3 am. We did not sleep at all, which is very exhausting after a long flight. We decided to leave after one night, unfortunately we didnt get any refunds. But still, this is not the hotels fault, and I hope they figure something out with the bar since its ruining the experience for the guests of this great hotel.

This was the third time staying at this hotel and it will be my last. The pictures are old. No lighted candles anywhere, no beautiful and clean mezzanine, no updated bathrooms. Rooms and most common areas are clean. Breakfast is not great and you can have better nearby. Overall it is just not as good as it used to be. I think it changed owners. Best qualities are the location, staff and how beautiful it is.

I stayed at the Riviera del Sol with a friend of mine, while participating in a wedding at one of the large (and very expensive) all-inclusive resorts, Secrets Capri. The bride and groom stayed there, but that was way out of my budget! When I searched for reasonable accomodations in downtown Playa del Carmen, Riviera del Sol stood out given the prompt and courteous response of the staff to my emails and questions. I looked at other small hotels in the same price range- it was a difficult choice as several looked fine. I knew I didn't want to be right in the middle of 5th Avenue noise, etc. which did narrow things down. At Riviera del Sol I got a great rate- even better by paying cash upon arrival- and felt the hotel had all I needed (beach access/breakfast included/close to shopping/quiet).

I paid in advance for airport (Cancun) to hotel transfers. When we arrived at the airport, it was apparent we could have done equally well/better with local companies right on site after you get out of Immigration. It costs about $15 per person each way for the one hour trip to Playa via companies at the airport, and about $22.50 for the pre-arranged service. The good thing about paying ahead was knowing everything was already set/arranged for the morning of our departure back from Playa to the Cancun airport! That eliminated any worry, and for two people the cost difference was minimal. Another airport hint- you will be bombarded with people offering you tours, etc. when you come out of Immigration. We waited until we were settled in the hotel to decide on exactly what we wanted to do, which worked out better for us than "giving in" to any sales pitches!

When we arrived at Riviera del Sol, I knew immediately that the hotel was going to far exceed my expectations! Juan Jose was an absolutely marvelous and courteous host/manager; he went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Fabiana was equally helpful, as were all of the other staff. We received excellent service start to finish, and any requests (extra towels, questions on tours, information on where to get certain items, etc.) were quickly/courteously met. One of the staff was also a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan!

My friend and I both loved our room (307), which had two queen beds, a refrigerator, and a nice balcony for relaxing. We tried to get 301/201when booking the reservation, as these are the only rooms with a view of the water (as there is a condo going up across the street)- they were already taken. However, we were totally pleased with where we were in all respects, and the description of the room given by Riviera del Sol was very accurate. The beds are definitely hard as others have described, but I was used to that by the second night. The pool is nice, with jacuzzi jets in the upper end. There is a Mexican flair to the decorations, with lots of tile and a very comfortable feeling- certainly not elaborate, but just perfect in my opinion. We also loved the second floor, open air "reading/TV room."

Maid service was excellent and thorough. The towels placed on the beds in animal shapes each morning were delightful! The large shower was fantastic- there was no bathtub, which was fine for us. I would have liked a coffeemaker in the room, but it was very easy to go downstairs to get coffee before breakfast, etc. and we could also take breakfast up to our balcony.

The beach (Mamitas Beach Club) was great and a very short walk away. We were given large beach towels and a "pass" at the front desk anytime we wanted to go there. When we visited, from May 13-19, there was no problem getting chairs/palapas after 9:30 am, though not "front row" seats by the water if you arrive later in the morning. In my opinion, its probably best to go to the bar and have your drinks mixed for you while you're there rather than having them delivered to you. By doing this and talking with the bartenders, I had absolultely no problem with anything being watered down! It was also truly wonderful to be able to walk 50+ yards into the water before it was above waist deep! My friend enjoyed swimming further out, and she said the water was calm and beautiful.

I have read other reviews that include info. on Wal-Mart, but I personally preferred "Mega," a large grocery store frequented by people who live/work in Playa. Great prices and lots of interesting foods to try- we loved some of the cookies and snacks!! The grocery store is on the second floor of a large building, with a special escalator to get the carts up and down! They had great rates on beer, pop, fruit (try the yellow mangoes), etc. Cheeses are great too! Its even closer than the Wal-Mart and offers more local flavor. We saved $ by using the refrigerator in our room for snacks and fruit. Although we didn't ask for it, I'm sure that it would be possible to warm up leftovers in the Riviera del Sol kitchen!

The breakfast at the hotel was perfect for what we wanted/needed. Its described well in other reviews- the fruit and yogurt were wonderful. I also took some Mexican coffee home (purchased at Mega) as I thought it was fantastic. Around the corner from the hotel on 5th Avenue, less than a one minute walk away, are several good restaurants and shops, and a money exchange (right at the corner of 30th and 5th). One more block away, at 32nd and 10th, is a good/very inexpensive laundry if you need anything cleaned or pressed! Hotel staff can show you how to get there. They offer same day service at bargain rates.

We took a full day tour to Tulum and Xel Ha (about $85), which was great aside from the heat at Tulum. Other ruins are more elaborate, but it was nice to be by the water and combine Tulum with the Xel Ha experience. We enjoyed snorkeling and tubing at Xel Ha, and of course the heat wasn't a problem there since we could swim, etc. The only difficulty there is that its crowded. Although its "all inclusive" admission with food and drinks included, if you aren't there very early in the day you will have to wait awhile for a restaurant meal. Snacks are quick/easy to obtain as another option. We spent a little too much time "in line" for food and therefore didn't have as much time as we would have liked to spend in the water, etc. They also have an option to swim with dolphins as an add-on, but its fairly pricey. There is alot to see on the grounds, and many shops we didn't have time to visit!

We went horseback riding one morning, and enjoyed the 3+ hour trip alot ($60 apiece). There are several places- all are similar in price. We went to a craft/tequila shop first, which was a little early in the morning for tequila (!). At the stable, after an introductory session which was very entertaining, we rode horses on a trail to the beach. Some horses were then unsaddled and we took turns "swimming" bareback- really great for anyone who loves riding! I paid $10 extra to "gallop on the beach," which was a peak experience- only 2 of us volunteered for that out of about 189-20 in our group. The total trail ride/swim was just over 2 hours. We picked up people from a few other hotels on the way there and back, but it wasn't too bad- same thing for the Tulum/Xel Ha tour. For that one we took a car to a central area to join other tourists, then a bus on to Tulum.

Restaurants in Playa were uniformly great- most were very reasonable. I doubt anyone could make a bad choice, and definitely you should try some new/local dishes. I took hints from prior reviews, and was never disappointed! There are numerous places for inexpensive tacos that are nothing like the processed variety in the US! I recommend the tacos "pastor" - seasoned pork- highly, and the small restaurant at the corner of 5th and 12th (Aca Taco?- with a large "Tasmanian devil" figure outside!) has good ones. They're small, but less than $1.00 apiece,so for a few dollars you have a great meal!

Obviously, I very highly recommend Riviera del Sol! I can't say enough good things about the staff, and I would definitely stay there again. Just FYI, the Hotel Totuga also seemed nice- its closer to the busier part of 5th for people who want that, but one block off the main street. It appears comfortable and quiet. I think its higher priced than Riviera del Sol.

We had an absolutely wonderful time both at Riviera del Sol and in downtown Playa, and it was really a good value in all respects. We definitely preferred where we stayed, i.e. the corner of 30th and 5th- this is the far end of where 5th Avenue is blocked to cars. It was less "touristy" than the lower numbered cross streets, and still a very easy walk to the busier section whenever we wanted to go there!

The big resorts are beautiful, and offer incredible amenities and a spectacular setting for a wedding/other special event. However, there's less opportunity or motivation to experience local culture and really enjoy being in Mexico! That to me is the best part of a vacation, i.e. seeing/trying new things. We felt Playa was great and wouldn't change anything about our trip. I know I'll be back!
