    28th visit and counting...
This was our 28th visit to OMR since we first visited in 2011! And the single most important reason we continue to return over and over is THE STAFF! We cannot overstate this. Every single person who works at OMR goes above and beyond to make sure each guest has the best experience possible. Let me start with arrival at OMR. The valet/bellhops run to greet us and are always amazed when we arrive for a 10 day stay with only two backpacks. (Vacuum bags are the key). We drop our bags with them for safekeeping until we have our room assignment. Then on to Guest Services to check in. We are Privilege but we know most of the staff on both sides. The head of Privilege Guest Services is Luis and he is a true gem. He and his team, especially Omar, are all smiles when we come in and have our paperwork ready to sign. Drinks are soon brought in and all we have to do is get our room key and we are ready to roll. Over the years we have stayed in lots of different rooms. We are happy with any room we get because we don't spend much time there. We usually get a couple of extra blankets for the bed because the AC is nice and cold. On this trip we stayed in Room 607 which has a renovated bathroom that is very nice. The balcony overlooks the main sidewalk and it's an easy walk to any area of the property. We always have our first and last dinner at La Dolce Vita. Captain Jorge Casanova is a friend going back to our first visit and he started spoiling us back then and has continued to spoil us by always trying to give us a good table, always making sure our glasses are full and always making sure we have a delicious meal. His team of pro waiters work like a well choreographed ballet! Alberto, Jose, Lydia, Jared, David all participate to make sure every diner at LDV has attention. Even when the restaurant is packed and there is a line to get a table, these guys are cool and calm and manage to make it look easy. And if there is a line to get in, you just sit in the lounge area with the amazing ocean view, have a drink and chat up new friends! For breakfast, we use Hacienda buffet. It has so many choices that I guarantee you will not go hungry. I like to get a custom omelet. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies too. All the staff at Hacienda are also special to us! From Raphael and Sandi who greet us to Vincente, Alfredo, Charley and Octavio who serve us - we love you! For lunch, we were surprised by the new option at El Charro. It was formerly a small buffet but it is now a la carte. The options are several types of tacos and a very nice green salad as well as hamburgers. We loved the shrimp tacos best. We also ate lunch at Privilege a couple of times and the menu there also has some new items like coconut shrimp and bass croquettes. The day staff at Privilege also take care of us on the beach. Managed by Captain Carolina who is another longtime friend and she is assisted by Dani, Sofia and Augustin and sometimes Roberto. It is such a joy to interact with you each day. We also ate at the Blue Moon. Captain Javier is another special friend and his waiters Esubeio, Ermelio and Jose take excellent care of us. We love to cut up and joke with them and even though we don't speak Spanish very well, we manage to communicate! Yokosoo has become another favorite spot for us because we can go there and get sushi. In fact, you do not need a reservation for the hibachi if all you want is sushi. That makes it very simple. The wait staff there are also treasured friends: David, Manuel and Mary. Shout out to Daniel, who is one of the hibachi chefs, for putting on a great show! The dinner menu at El Charro has also been revamped. We ended up making a meal out of several appetizers washed down by some lime margaritas. We want to recognize all the bartenders who keep us well hydrated including Oli, Octavio, Jorge, Tiger, Antonio, Eber, Miguel, Jonny and Diego. I bring my own sparkly plastic champagne flute and carry it with me all day. As we have gotten to know the staff over the years, we have been through all kinds of life events with them from births to deaths. Each one has a unique story and if you take the time to listen, you will be blessed. There is one girl I got to know a couple of years ago who hands out towels by the pool. I noticed she can speak English well. We started talking when we were here in December and I asked her if she had any plans to move up to another position at OMR where she could use her English skills. She told me she was applying to be a butler and I was very excited for her. So imagine how happy I was when I arrived for this trip and found she has begun her training as a butler. Way to go Brenda! There are also a couple of sweet girls who work very hard in the lobby at night that we know as Jojo and Ana! Both are truly lovely both inside and out! Such energy! How do they keep up with all those drink orders??? We were also pleased to see that Augustine is back in Mikes Cafe. He left last December but he is now back where he belongs! Mikes is a great place to get coffee and a yummy treat. We don't normally spend time in the sports bar but we do want to mention Cristobal and know that he does an amazing job there. We also don't normally stay up for entertainment but this time we did see the fire show and the Broadway show which were both fun. We did eat dinner at the Hacienda buffet a couple of nights. The food there is always outstanding. Again, so much variety, grilled options, tons of desserts. The only downside is that it is loud in there and not as intimate. Sometimes, we go there just for the desserts! We also recommend that if you are thinking of booking OMR, go to their website and sign up for the H10 Club. Just give them your email. You get automatic 5% off and free transfers. They also send you emails about special discounts. We find we save a lot of money by doing this. There is also a FB page called Fans of Ocean Maya Royale that has lots of photos and information. It's always a pleasure to return to OMR and then to share our experience with others. We feel that we were meant for OMR and it has become a second home for us. It is more than just a place to vacation. It is an opportunity to reconnect with friends, meet new friends and strengthen bonds that will last a lifetime.

Lovely hotel, shame about the loud, drunken guests
We had two weeks at OMR in January. The hotel is lovely but during our first week particularly there were a lot of very loud guests who seemed to do nothing but sit drinking all day at the pool. We were woken twice by neighbours having a party on the balcony next door and on one occasion a girl had to be taken from the pool in a wheelchair as she was too drunk to stand. The bar staff seem to encourage this behaviour. We did notice that on the second week there were more older people there and it was a lot more sedate. The restaurants were good. Apart from the main buffet, which had a good choice and service was good, there were Japanese, Mexican, Italian and Blue Moon. We didn’t visit the Japanese as hubbie didn’t fancy it. We went to the Mexican most lunchtimes and there was often a bbq. We only went once in the evening and were very disappointed when we had fajitas that weren’t sizzling, quite cold and had no flavour. We loved the Italian though the walls are open and so if it’s a bit cool you would need a cover up and we were bitten by bugs. The food and service were very good. We went to the Blue Moon three times and it was our favourite though you sometimes had to wait nearly an hour for a table. We went for our wedding anniversary and although we had informed Tui, they hadn’t passed this on to the hotel. However, our friends told the waiter and he came back with a beautifully decorated plate. The rooms are large and the bed very comfortable. My only problem was we weren’t given soap in the bathroom and after a few days of using the hotel toiletries to wash my hands they stopped replenishing it. I had to keep moving my shower gel between shower and basin. Not a major problem but a nuisance. There are only two pools and they are right next to each other so you can’t get away from the loud foam parties. I did aquafit twice but it was exactly the same whoever ran it and I got a bit bored. To get a bed you have to put your towel down by 8 am so we did that and then went for breakfast. The beach was extremely disappointing for the Caribbean. There was no seaweed on the beach but the sea was black with it and if you went in you came out covered in it. I did manage to swim once when there was a gap in the seaweed around the pier. The pier would be a good place to get into the sea but it was closed off. We only did one trip and that was a really good day to Cobá Maya, which you can still climb the 42 metres to the top, a Mayan settlement and a lovely swim in a cenote. The hotel was too far out of the way to walk anyway though I did go along the beach to the lagoon for a little swim. Overall, what let this hotel down for us was the fact it’s too far away to walk anywhere, the lack of a good Caribbean beach and the loud, drunken guests. We won’t be back.
Dear Indiechickgranny Thank you for choosing Ocean Maya Royale for your anniversary, While we appreciate you enjoyed the hotel facilities and most of the restaurant meals, we would like to sincerely apologize for any inconvenience faced during your time here on property. Regarding the ocean conditions, this constantly change and unfortunatelly we can not control it as it happens in all the area, about other guest behavior due the alcohol you can be sure our staff is trained to stop the service when is necessar. We would love to know about the soap while you were here, we could do something about it, We will be sure to share your review with our team in order to ensure this does not happen moving forward. Thank you for share you opinion, if you change your mind, we will be very happy to take care of your reservation, Warm regards from Playa del Carmen,

    Great Pandemic Vacation
My boyfriend and I stayed here September 20-24. We caught an amazing deal on the hotel through their website and signed up for their H10 program. We scheduled transportation for free through the hotel and when we arrived we had a short wait for the shuttle. When we arrived the hotel staff all had on masks and the check-in process was seamless. Hand sanitizer stations with foot sanitizers were set up at all major entrances and restaurant entrances. The hotel had just opened the week prior to arrival and the hotel wasn't packed which added to our feeling of safety. During our stay we enjoyed a delightful couples massage outside overlooking the beach and pool area. We also signed up for a scuba excursion with DiveIt! to some cenotes and the Mayan Ruins. Margarita was working the DiveIt! booth by the pool she was wonderful and wasn't overbearing about signing us up. The restaurants were great but they only had one, sometimes two, restaurant open a night which was fine considering they just opened and the resort was not at full capacity. Reservations are encouraged and during check in they explain the online process of how to do that. The menus were online as well to decrease touch points. The property was well kept and looked like the pictures. There was seaweed on the beach but it's a beach so it didn't bother us. Mask use was required for staff and highly encouraged but not mandatory for guests. It was my first trip during the pandemic and it was such an amazing experience. I highly encourage anyone considering booking here to do it!
Dear 280karela Thank you so much for choosing Ocean Maya Royale as the host of your vacation at the Riviera Maya. We are amazingly happy to read that you had such a great experience and impression about our hotel, since we are commited to achieve our guests' satisfacion and safety during this new worldwide scenario. We really hope to host you again in the nearest future and share more experiences with you. -Ocean Maya Royale

First and foremost, ocean maya royale is an absolutely beautiful resort. There is such a large selection of restaurants and bars, and generally again all the staff are wonderful. So obliging and again very helpful. There is such an array of activities on site, and again the staff are very obliging when trying to accommodate you on such, with such examples as jet-sking etc. The resort itself is very safe, we as a group found Mexico very safe as a whole, with that safety is paramount when coming and going from the resort. The only qualms I have about my week stay at Ocean maya royale is that, myself and my partner came back to the apartment one evening to find a note requesting that we contact staff the following morning in which we done, unknown to us the following morning when we met staff we were informed that we were going to be charged etc for towels and bed linen as house keeping had to dispose of such. We were told that staff were under the assumption that blood were on the linen provided, with that we informed them that these stains are a mixture of sun lotion and make up. We informed them we'd no issue paying any charge, but we were absolutely shocked that house keeping had taken pictures of our linens as 'proof', to say we were shocked was an understatement, a violation of such. This genuinely is the reason for one less star, because I can't fault the place otherwise.

The hotel is amazing, very comfortable and in an incredible location. The sea is warm and transparent and only steps from the beach area, where you could always find comfortable lounges. Food was very good and with plenty of options. We particularly enjoyed the Asian restaurant, as well as the buffet. We were especially thankful to CAROLINA in the front desk which helped us with tips and suggestions for moving around in the local area. The only issue to improve could be to have espresso/capuccino at breakfast.

It was our first visit in Mexico and I admit that I didn't expect it to be that good. We spent 15 nights in this place. The hotel is showing its age, but the atmosphere is still unique, including: due to its location in a beautiful garden where you can meet various animals. Access to a variety of food in 5 restaurants. Rooms cleaned every day. A well-equipped gym open 24/7. Finally, of course, the most important thing, the best service, and here a few people deserve a mention: - lobby bartender - Octavio - pool bartender - Jony - waiter at La Hacienda - Elias - concierge - Luis And finally, the best of the best, i.e. Blue (entertaiment) Team : - Adelaida - Brown Sugar - Vierli - Camilo - Esteban I definitely recommend this place.

This is our first time @ H10 brand. Stayed on the privileged side and it was just okay. If this is your first trip to Mexico it is an adequate Resort. The steakhouse was fantastic. The rest of the food was very average including the buffet which was below average. For $1,200 to $1,300 a person you could find a much better place to be honest. There are only two pools. There is no food service near the pool other than a very sub par Mexican restaurant. The beach area is very nice, however, there is little to no wait service on the beach. The 2 rooms we stayed in on the privileged side were very average and have many places where "repairs" have been made. I would rate this resort around a 7. If you have stayed at other 5 star resorts you are not going to be thrilled or impressed here unfortunately.

This resort was phenomenal! The entertainment staff made our stay magical. Jules went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a wonderful time by being kind, enthusiastic, and welcoming. The room was very comfortable, and had a mini bar which made getting a drink of water at night highly convenient. The beach was beautiful and super clean. The resort had something for everyone, whether you want to have fun or just spend some time relaxing. Highly recommend this place!

Had this been our first experience of AI 5*(?) Mexico, we would have said, 'it was okay' however, it was not. Check in, as a first impression was poor. We were led to some seating in reception. After waiting for 15 mins we approached the desk and were given a very luke warm greeting, given the rules of the hotel and were told to scan the QR code where we could find all information about our stay. The room Clean but very dated, half sized wardrobe with 10 hangers and 4 small drawers for 2 adults for 2 wks is totally inadequate. Bed was big and comfortable. Bathroom was fine, visible repairs had been carried out, mismatched tiles and paint. I would have preferred a stardard iron, especially as I stored most of our clothes in the cases but an upright steamer was provided. Food This is where the real disappintment hit. There is no facility to book a table in any of the restaurants unless you pay for Priviledge upgrade, you have to join a queue and hope that they can fit you in, we were not lucky which left the buffet. This was our 5th trip to Mexico, we keep going back because the AI we have experienced has been phenominal, not so here. There was a lack of variety / quality for those of us that had no other option but to eat here. We decided to bite the bullet for our second week and paid £500 to upgrade to the Priviledge package, this did not include a room upgrade. Please don't ever do this. It entitled us to book the restaurants using the app which never worked, a Nesspresso coffee machine and access to the priviledge beach and lounge. Serive was extremely slow. The Restaurant food, with the exception of the Japanese food, was uninspired and actually not very good. Plus side. The staff are amazing and work really hard to ensure you enjoy your holiday, restaurant staff, the entertaintment team, domestic staff and special mention to the ground staff because the Hotel complex is beautifully cared for and a pleasure to be in. The beach could use some TLC, never saw anyone tending or picking up litter/fag ends as we have seen in other resorts. Disappointing Hotel massively propped up by a fantastic staff team. Sorry but won't be back.

⭐️We absolutely loved this resort⭐️ Upon arrival we were greeted by bell boys that sorted our luggage and brought us, much needed cold refreshing drinks within minutes of being there. We arrived prior to our check in time so we were shown a room to 'freshen up' with a shower and changing facilities then taken to the buffet for lunch. After this it was time to officially check in. Our room was clean, spacious with two double beds, a balcony overlooking beautiful grounds, decent sized shower room and air con to dramatically cool us down in the 40°c heat. We found there to be plenty of sunbeds (even during summer peak season), the ones around the pool went first but there were plenty around the beach area, even after lunchtime. The entertainment pool was good fun and was definitely the place to be, with fun games and activities happening throughout the day, I hardly read any of my books!!! The swim up pool bar was great place to hang out and chat to people from all over the world (we've made some great friends from USA, Canada, UK, Spain). The bar staff were epic and very attentive to everyone, whether you had a standard wristband or a privilege one it didn't matter. Restaurants were great. The standard buffet was good fresh food with plenty of choice, we didnt get bored during our 10 days there. Blue Moon was nice food but we found it lacked atmosphere. Sports Bar was great and we spent many an hour here. Cristobel was awesome, he recognised the regulars drinks and continued to bring them over to you when he saw you were low! Wings are a great order but be sure to 'double up', trust me, one portion isn't enough!!! El Charro (mexican restaurant) was our fav during day and night. Service was great, big up Daniela for lunchtime service and Jafet for evening both equally made our holiday with great service and a friendly smile. Dolce Vita was a l9 Ely setting with nice food and service...don't forget to say hi to Poncho (friendly resort cat) Staff were attentive expecially David, Jared & Jorge, thanks for making our evening memorable. The entertainment staff (Blue Team) worked tirelessly all day/night every day and all deserve medals! They truly are the life and sole of the party pool! I blame many of my hangovers to these guys, Especially from the foam party nights!!!! (Any leftover suntan lotion please donate to them). Download the resort app prior to going for info on restaurants, bars, menus, entertainment, etc it is so useful. Beautiful lagoon to the north of the resort (to the beach and left) about a 10-15min walk. Beautiful clear cold water, perfect for a cool down but be warned, there is a strong current so stay on your guard. Any watersports...speak to Margarita at the poolside she hooked us up with a great jet ski, snorkeling afternoon from the resort beach. Loved the wildlife around the resort, check out the signs and admire from a distance, remember they are wild animals! TIP: Take plenty of low notes (dollars or pesos) for tips, these guys work so hard and deserve a little extra. Just loved everything about this place, we will definitely return. Thank you so much for the fun, laughter and epic cocktails xxx
