We stayed here for five days and had a wonderful experience. The overall property was beautiful. Pool was nice and room accommodations (The Ocean View Villa) were outstanding. All the staff are attentive and helpful.

My husband and I return to the Viceroy every year. It has everything we want in a 5 star experience. The private villas are beautiful and the outdoor shower is the best! We stayed 5 nights and never left the property. The food is amazing, the staff goes above and beyond to cater to you every second of the day, without being obtrusive.

After a very long year of no travel, my husband and I booked a stay at the Viceroy Riviera Maya and it was exactly what we needed. This is a boutique hotel, with only 41 rooms, and no guests under 18. That makes for a quiet, peaceful experience. The staff was very attentive, pleasant and we had zero complaints. The property is well groomed, and our room was exceptional! In addition, it was great to have the room serviced twice a day. There were some items included in the package we booked that were omitted from our welcome information, but the staff was quick to make the correction and no issues were had. However, one of the items included in our package was a "Tequila and Ceviche Tasting". Were were really looking forward to this, especially with the spread they create, with multiple bottles of tequila brands. To our dismay, we were only able to taste the well tequila. I asked why and was told it was really more about learning of the process. However, our server was very hard to understand, because they have to wear masks, so we didn't even learn of the process. I don't understand why you'd set up a table, fill it with at least 2 dozen different types of tequila, call it a "tasting" and then not open 95% of the bottles. If this isn't included in your package, I would not encourage you to add it, but I also wouldn't say this was a deal breaker or a reason not to choose Viceroy for your stay. Another tip, book anything through the concierge. We golfed Mayakoba, set it up ourselves, and paid almost $700. We then tried booking Gran Coyote and the woman there said "If you have the concierge book it for you, it's half price." I have to think the same would have applied to Mayakoba.

After a negative experience with a last minute cancellation from the property a few years ago, the Viceroy went above and beyond to address our prior grievances. We’ve been down to the Playa/Tulum area a few times, and we were previously torn between staying at Esencia or the Viceroy. A few pros and cons for travelers making the same choice: -Viceroy beat out Esencia’s service...by a LONG shot. When we stayed at Esencia, our bathroom malfunctioned and our room smelled like a septic tank. Despite having open rooms, we didn’t get moved and the problem didn’t get fixed. Luckily we only had one night left when this problem occurred. At Viceroy, meanwhile, I had emailed before we arrived and mentioned I was worried about mosquitoes. The room was DECKED OUT with bug spray, citronella candles, incense. The works. They knew I didn’t drink alcohol, and even the restaurant managers offered the mocktail list without being asked. Impressive. -The beach at Esencia wins, hands down. Viceroy is lovely and has these amazing day beds, don’t get me wrong. But there is an obnoxious number of people selling massages (you get asked if you want one no less than every 15 minutes). I get that it’s more of an annoyance than a grievance, but Esencia is much more protected and there is essentially none of this to disturb you. -The room at Viceroy wins, no contest. Each room is much more private than Esencia with a large bamboo and plant barrier from the walking path, a private plunge pool, and a much larger space. -Ultimately, I think it truly is a toss up between the two hotels. Viceroy has much of the hidden jungle flavor that Esencia does (in fact I think Viceroy maybe used to be owned by the Esencia folks). For us, Viceroy was a better experience ultimately given the service and the room, but I can see the advantages of either property!

My husband and I spent 4 nights here in March and had the most relaxing time we've enjoyed in more than a year. Service was incredible from the moment we arrived and were greeted with a cold towel and a tasty lemongrass drink. The villas are gorgeous -- luxurious with a rustic aesthetic, and we especially enjoyed the outdoor shower. We stayed in #36 which was far enough from the neighboring resorts that the music didn't bother us. Pool is incredible and there is always someone to take care of you whether it's getting a drink or adjusting your shade. We enjoyed the food at both restaurants, but ended up wishing there were more options on the menu after a few days. The beach in front of the hotel is narrow and the ocean is rocky, but the hotel provides water shoes and lots of seating options. Everyone on staff wore masks all the time, and we were able to be distanced enough from other guests that we felt safe. We can't wait to go back!
