Reviews Summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Hotel Riu Palace Mexico garners commendation for its exceptional service, as staff members frequently receive accolades for their friendly and attentive nature. While the hotel's beachfront and diverse culinary offerings are highlights for many guests, some suggest that the pools and rooms could benefit from updates. The atmosphere elicits mixed reactions, with the entertainment and aesthetic appeal pleasing some, but others find the music overbearing and the decor dated. Cleanliness is generally upheld with well-maintained premises, though some areas reportedly need attention. The hotel's prime location near the beach is a major plus for guests, yet the value proposition is met with criticism, as some guests feel the experience does not justify the cost, pointing to the need for renovations. Room experiences vary, with cleanliness and size often praised, but there's a call for modernization and resolution of maintenance concerns.

It has a very beautiful beachfront with stunning shades of blue water. You could go for long beach walks. The resort was diligent about cleaning the beach of sea weed using tractors almost every day. The food is okay, and the buffet has a variety of items. We had tasty meals at the Italian and Fusion restaurants. The steakhouse was ok. The staff was attentive and courteous. Drink service at the beach was good and a little different than past RIU visits in that the servers would come around with trays of prepared drinks from which you could choose rather than ordering something and needing to wait for it. The coffee bar was a go to every morning for a latte before heading for breakfast. We appreciated it being open early after our last non-RIU resort experience where the coffee bar didn’t open until 11AM. The room was comfortable and was kept cool with our air conditioner. The bed’s firmness was to our liking. Housekeeping service was reliable, and the minibar was regularly restocked. The resort itself is maintained by diligent cleaning and landscaping staff. There were many families with both older and younger kids giving the resort a more family oriented feel. The entertainment at this resort was better than some other Rius that we had been to. We saw several agoutis and a monkey. There was a nice variety of small shops in a nearby mall. As much as we enjoyed our stay, there was room for improvement. The entire resort could use an update particularly the bathrooms. They should replace worn fixtures including the electrical outlets and adding a new coat of paint. The guests would appreciate the enforcement of the no saving chairs policy. Diners would enjoy having their hot food served hot instead of sometimes barely warm. It would be great if the steak served at the Steakhouse was at least as good as it was at Krystal fusion restaurant. We’d consider returning to the resort but likely only after it had been updated. We additionally visited the Riu Tequila and the Riu Playacar. The Riu Playacar pool area was very congested and smoky around lunch time because the BBQ is at poolside. We also had the only dismissive service we received during our stay at the Playacar’s lunch buffet so likely wouldn’t consider staying at that resort for those reasons.

Hotel's Favorite
It has been 5 years since we last visited yet the first words from staff we recognised as we left the coach and went to reception was welcome home. That is how we felt welcomed. The staff couldn't do enough for you. The facilities in the hotel are great from room cleaning to a 24 eat drink self service area. Food temperature is checked regularly and restocking of food/ drink happens on a regular basis. No reservations required in any of the restaurant. You can check food and drink options via the Rui app or get paper ones. Food choice is plentiful and tasty. My sister in laws birthday was celebrated with a cake and song from the staff at breakfast and dinner.. The hotel also sent cake to her room and thanks to Santiago and Ĵacquim tow of the best Maitre D's she had a full bottle of prosecco on ice delivered with a chocolate basket of chocolate coated strawberries. The Coffee bar provides an excellent stop off after lunch and dinner. As always service is with a smile from wake up to head down whether maid/conciege/ wait staff or Maitre D or Management. They are there to help you enjoy your holiday and the certainly did.

Third trip to Playa Del Carmen but this time traveled here with two other families for our older kid's spring break. For an all-inclusive, we were not pleased with the food or accommodations and would not stay here again. Upon our arrival, we immediately noticed a moldy, stale smell and asked the front desk about. They replied they didn't smell anything unpleasant. On the long walk to our room, there were breezeways, and we didn't notice the smell until we entered out room. If you've ever stayed in an old home or visited an old church, you'd know the smell. The only place we did not notice the smell was in the coffee/bar area which had some type of air freshener being piped in, we assumed. Our stay was 5 days, and the smell wasn't the worst of it. The food was awful. The buffet was poorly managed and unappetizing. The place was crowded so we understood it could be hard to keep up with demand, but no effort was made by staff to tidy the buffet offerings, clean up spilled food or even change out the serving utensils which were well used. I observed several young children use hands that had been inside their pants, in clear view of staff. Each meal had the appeal of eating at a trough. We tried the Japanese "sit down" style restaurant and found it was the exact same food from the buffet and just has unpleasing. From the undercooked bacon and other meats to the reheated food served several times over during the day and generally awful tasting, it was bad. Pepe's grill was the only bright spot for food offerings, which meant there was a line to get food. We ate most of our meals away from the premises, in town, which we found very expensive, for the quality. The pools are rather small and very crowed during our stay and the beach only had palm trees as shade. Works for some, but not for us as the sun moved so did the shade. It's a busy public beach, so be prepared to be "sales pitched", multiple times. Our door key was deactivated 8 times. We found this out each time after we made the very long walk back to our room. There were no phones available or people to help, so each time the key deactivated, we had to make the long hot walk back to front desk to have it reactivated. The staff said it was our cell phone deactivating the cards, however we proved this was not case. They could not explain why it kept happening. The bed was relatively comfortable, but our pillows were too flat, and we only had one each. The air conditioner would not blow cold enough for our liking and the mold smell was strong, creating the humidity in the room. When we arrived home, we realized we brought the horrible smell from the place with us. Everything from our luggage, toiletries, shoes clothes.... everything smelled like mold and required several washings and fabric deodorizers to rid of things of the odor. It was just awful. Would I stay here again, no.

Returned yesterday after a 2 week stay. Overall this was a great holiday, we have been to numerous 4/5 star AI resorts in the Caribbean, This was one of the best. In a gated community, smart villas and other hotels, some of the Riu chain, which residents in the Riu Palace Mexico can use. Fantastic beach, beautiful grounds. All staff really helpful and pleasant. Delicious food in the a la cartes and buffet. The choice available in the latter was amazing. Good range of spirits, lots more choice available than the menus show. Disappointing beer choice however. No real problem getting loungers if down by 9am. Usual presence of selfish people who take a bed and not use all day. There are always some people like this wherever you go. A pleasant 1.2 mile walk to the centre of Playa Del Carmen. Would definitely recommend.

It has taken me seven months to write this review because I was so disappointed in this hotel. We have since travelled to Mauritius and had a fantastic 5 star holiday and it prompted me to give people considering spending this hotel the benefit of our experience at this RUIhotel. We have stayed in a few hotels in this chain. Our previous experience of the RUI palace standard was 5 star. However, our experience this time was seriously disappointing! The hotel let itself down very badly by not imposing the dress code throughout the hotel but especially for dinner. I acknowledge the staff had a difficult job as many of the guests were rude, loud and very dismissive of the staff. Swim wear straight off the beach was allowed in to the restaurants in the evening - I found this totally unacceptable. The swim up bar was occupied from opening till closing by the same crowd. Many were having very large vacuum flasks filled with alcohol and never left the pool throughout the day!!!! There was music BLARING from so many sources including many residents having their own source of music with no regard to other people. There were large groups of people holidaying together and they were oblivious of their noise / behaviour. The beach was gorgeous to look at but once again spoilt by loud music and inappropriate behaviour. Trying to get a drink on the beach was very difficult unless you were Mexican! The waiters totally ignored us even though they could see we wanted to order a drink. They were overly friendly with certain groups of people. The adults only pool was not reserved for adults, all ages were using it. The entertainment was in all respects terrible, and not what I expected from a hotel of this standard. It was reminiscent of Magaluf or 1970's Benidorm. The entertainment team /show artists ( other than the Mexican traditional dancing) were awful and on occasion inappropriate with their language of gestures. I do not enjoy writing such a scathing review. However, I hope to help people make an informed choice and know what they might be faced with. We are a retired couple with high expectations from a hotel of this caliber. We have travelled extensively and would always have recommended this chain. Not now! I noticed they have now introduced a premium plus RUIhotel so perhaps they have realised their Palace experience is sadly lacking. There wasn't one thing that was Palace standard in this hotel.

Don’t bother with this “upgraded palace” resort. Mother Nature provided beautiful weather and a beautiful beach but the food, rooms and service were horrible. Rooms smelled of sewer and mildew. Most of the service staff members didn’t care if you were there or not. We like to tip for extra pampering…don’t bother. Our “double junior suite” was a joke. Had items stolen from our pool chairs and were told no cameras and check lost and found. Had a letter to “meet with manage”. They did not show up. Kids cannot swim in the swim up pool bar. I could go on and on. Will never stay at another.

If I could give this place zero stars I would. It was absolutely disgusting! The room was filthy and so were the grounds. The sheets were stained yellow when I believe they were supposed to white, the entire room smelled like cigarettes. The pool was extremely lack luster. Couldn’t find a seat with shade and when we finally did find a place to sit no one came around and offered us drink service. The pool grounds were also unkept, missing tiles everywhere and stains on almost every chair to lounge on. I really can’t stress just how gross and cleanly this place is. We checked out almost two hours after check in and couldn’t get out fast enough! I’ve never left a review before but I feel like if I can spare anyone from going to this place I will.

Just came here to give a huge shout out to doormen Francisco & Manuel and the front desk. Very professional, always smiling & friendly, made us feel like family visiting. We would go again just to see them. Thank you for your help with my family visiting from Belize. I have been in hospitality my whole life & they are ( the whole staff of the resort in fact) top notch. Thank you for an incredible & unforgettable bday vacation.

From the moment we arrived and we were greeted by the wonderful Francisco at the door this holiday just got better and better. Check in was a dream and our room was lovely..everything we could ask for and more..reception give us a call quite frequently to check if we were happy and we needed anything but we never did as they had all areas covered. The food was always varied and top notch in the main buffet and the al a cart restaurants were always able to accommodate us even with a little wait they give you a buzzer so you know when your table is ready. The pool area was never really an issue to get a lounger and the bar and drinks were brilliant, the beach and the ocean were stunning.the hotel offer free water sports and we had a journey out on a catamaran one day. The best thing about this hotel are the amazing staff our lovely evening bartenders Omar and cheeky Rico looked after us so well..rico makes a mean baby Guinness. The housekeeper took time to decorate the room for my husbands birthday with balloons and banners and regularly left cute little animals made from towels on our bed..such a lovely touch. The doormen, Francisco and the gang were just the best and they never forget your name we had lots of lovely chats with the guys and you genuinely feel sad to leave your new friends…thank you Riu palace Mexico for having such an amazing team of guys and girls working for you, making our experience second to none..we will be back next year 100% mañana my amigos ♥️
