The Hotel Riu Playacar receives high marks for its cleanliness and lively atmosphere, complete with festive decorations and music that create an enjoyable party vibe, though it's not without noise complaints. Guests appreciate its prime location, steps away from the beach and local attractions. The hotel's amenities, including pools and beach activities, are generally well-regarded, but there's a call for an air-conditioned bar and updates. While many guests commend the attentive service, some have experienced delays. Room opinions are mixed, with commendations for space and cleanliness contrasted by some criticism over noise and dated decor. Opinions on value also vary; some guests find it affordable, while others question the cost-quality ratio.

My partner and I went here in January/ February 2023 to celebrate my 50th birthday. We arrived around 17:30 and check in was very efficient. You get a welcome drink which was a nice gesture. The hotel has 8 buildings with 3 floors each and we got building 8.

A bellboy took us and our suitcases to our room which was big, nice and clean. The bathroom is huge with a big shower, two sinks, hair dryer, big mirror and there is soap, shower gel, shampoo. and plenty of towels. The room had a big bed, seats and table, a big tv, fridge + minibar, coffee machine, safe, iron board, and the wardrobe provided plenty of space and a lot of cloth hangers.

As we have been travelling for about 24 hours we were both excited and wanted to go to the beach which was a short walk from our building. Of course it was dark but we wanted to smell and feel the sand and ocean.

After we went for dinner and there are plenty of options. The main buffet and 4 á la carte, we decided to go for the buffet. We got a table outside and a waiter came straight away, introduced himself and asked what we wanted to drink. During our meal he came to us and asked if everything was ok and if we wanted something else to drink. The buffet was amazing! Soups, bread, salads, vegetarian corner, Mexican corner, live cooking, pasta and pizza station, desserts and ice cream. The variety was unbelievable. Even me as a picky eater could always find something. During our stay (14 days) we tried the Asian restaurant which was ok and the Mexican which we did not liked at all. The food was very bland, tasteless and cold. The Italian did not have any vegetarian dishes and therefore we did not eat there. Same with the Steak house. We were so happy with the main buffet so that was were we went every day.

There are 5 bars at this hotel and there are making the best cocktails ever. You can ask for whatever you want and they will make it. As we are no pool people we never went to the swim up bar but went to all the others.

We spent most of our days down at the beach which was amazing. The white sand, palm trees, turquoise water and sun, what more can you ask for. You will get free beach towels which can be changed daily. There are some vendors selling things and excursions, but if you are not interested a friendly "no, gracias" and they will leave you alone. Please bare in mind that they are just trying to earn some money and should be treated with respect.
A waiter is coming now and then with a big tray of drinks, you can also order your special wish and they will bring it to you.
It was quit windy when we were there, red flag almost every day but we are both very good swimmers, stayed close to the beach and did not take any risks. Life guards are there keeping an eye on things which felt safe.
Unfortunately, some of the days the water and beach was covered in Sargassum seaweed, those days you had to walk a bit up or down to be able to enter the water.
Workers are trying really hard to collect and get rid of it and the good thing it does not smell fishy like "normal" seaweed.
There are always sunbeds available at the beach, no need to reserve any. Cannot say anything about the pools, only time we went there was for Aqua gym and the foam party on Wednesdays which is so funny.

Entertainment is ok, they have games during the day which is fun, if you do not want to participate the entertainment staff leaves you alone. I liked the dance with the staff in the evenings, and there are some shows... some are ok, some are really good and some are.... well, we all have a different taste. We really enjoyed the Silent disco, hilarious and such a laugh.

As it was my 50th birthday, there was a bottle of sparkling wine and chocolate strawberries waiting in the room, unfortunately a day early but who cares.
When I came back from the beach on my birthday, the room was covered in flowers, petals and balloons as a complementary from the hotel.
On my birthday, my partner surprisingly proposed to me on the beach, and of course I said yes. He had booked the "romantic dinner on the beach" and it was something really special. The way to the small hut was lightened by torches, rose petals and the light at the hut was romantic red. We had a personal waiter looking after us, some nice romantic music and the sea in the back ground. What an amazing birthday and engagement environment. The food was a 4 course meal, and unfortunately this was the first big disappointment. When my partner booked this, he had informed that I am allergic to seafood and I am vegetarian. The first course was a shrimp salad, I got the salad with no shrimps (as I am allergic) but there was no substitute, just a plate with some salad leaves. Second course was a soup, unfortunately it was the same pepper soup that we have had for lunch, but in addition it was very salty and cold. Then the main course was served, and when the waiter lifted the cloche, there were 3 big pieces of meat on my plate! I was disgusted but luckily my partner covered the plate again and talked to the waiter. He run away to get me something else and came back with a plate of mashed potatoes, cauliflower and some carrots. Nice gesture but honestly, there are som many nice vegetarian options. Then the waiter and another staff member came with a birthday cake and sang for me.
All in all it was a really nice evening, but the error with the food took away the fun and enjoyment. I would definitely not say it is worth 2.700 MXN $.

So, here is my resume:

Positive:

Great hotel at an amazing location

The staff is incredible, every one from the bellboy, room maid, bar and restaurant staff, entertainers, garden maintainers, customer service, reception, just everyone. They are all so humble, friendly, smiling, And, no one is demanding or expecting tips! They are still doing their utmost to make your holiday perfect. This affects the customers who all are very friendly too. RIU Playacar should be so proud of their staff.

There is such a variety of food and drinks, 24 hours, and as mentioned we stayed here for 2 weeks and never got tired of the food. Creamy guacamole and vegetables to all meals, delicious drinks, it cannot get better.

Negatives:

Well, there are not really anything negative but some small improvements:

There are no hooks in the bath room to put the big towels on, only some for the small hand towel. We had to put our big towels over the door or over the seats.

The faux pax with the food error at the Romantic dinner, this should not happen.

I do not watch TV whilst on holiday, but sometimes I want to see the news or watch a music channel while getting ready for the evening. When turning on the TV for the first time, scrolling through the channels I really got shocked when I came to channel 55, Adrenalina! This channel should be removed from the TV list as it shows animal cruelty 24-7. Bullfighting is forbidden almost all over the world and it is a shame that RIU supports this cruelty in 2023.

All in all, we loved it here and are giving RIU Playacar 95 out of 100!
And guess what? We have booked this hotel again and are going back next year in Januari/ Februari 2024, this time for 3 weeks

Dear Thuleslapper, We are very grateful for your wonderful feedback! It is very rewarding for our beautiful staff members to read your fantastic remarks. Thank you very much for choosing us. Nonetheless, we totally agree with you, in regards to banning anything that does not condemn any act of cruelty against any being. We wish our guests to be more conscious about the importance of respecting the place they choose to visit and the animals living in it. We hope this is applied in all destinations, since, even though it is not illegal by local laws, there are practices in different destinations, such as, bull cruelty in Spain or horse-drawn carriages in Mallorca, who live in appalling conditions, that will end when tourists make the conscious choice of practising an ethical visit. We wish this takes place sooner than later and we thank you for your wholehearted review. We hope we get more visitors who share the same life values as you, we need tourists like you. The management will be notified. Wishing to see you again. Kindest Regards, Hotel Riu Playacar Online Reputation Manager

My husband and I stayed last week 2/20-2/24 which was first time with Riu and second time ever at an all inclusive. We are both picky and the idea of baking in the sun only to be rolled over and fed from the buffet and watered from the bar hasn't been our norm however we are slowing down and decided maybe there is something to the "package deal". Foremost the staff was phenomenal, front desk, entertainment, restaurants, bars, housekeeping all work diligently to keep the facility spotless and location is gorgeous. White sand beach and always a lounger to be had as well as some activity in which to participate or spectate. Front desk staff (Vidal) and transfer service Dianne Maricel (SP?) was especially awesome as I left my purse in the transfer van (passport, $400 cash, phone, etc.). It seems to be something coincident with age 50+? Purses, phones, glasses, sunglasses etc.. I'm an engineer so this is not normal and in general peeves me to no end however this incident ended no harm no foul, lucky me! I especially enjoyed the fitness classes in the pool and on the beach as well as the fun group activities. I'm not super-social however the sun, beach and energetic Riu team kept me engaged. I'm already planning a return trip - thanks for the great vacay.

This is the third RIU I’ve stayed at and I must say it was another great RIU vacation. The resort was clean and there was always great entertainment. The beach was very clean and beautiful, close walk to the pools and swim up bar.

The buffet was lacking in comparison to other RIU resorts I have been too. The buffet food just seemed too basic and not much selection when compared to other RIU’s ...BUT, the specialty restaurants are amazing!! Mexican, and Italian restaurant were absolutely delicious, by far the best I’ve had on resort.

Our room was clean and the cleaning staff were great.
A few staff were not the most friendly but there were lots of staff that were more than friendly.
There is nearby shopping and the Playacar neighbourhood is a gated community and seems very safe.

There were two employees that made our vacation great, Marcos and Osovaldo at La Combia bar (theatre bar). They were very friendly and happy at all times, they remembered our names and always ensured we were taken care of. Marcos is the hardest working employee I’ve seen, Marcos always ensured his customers were happy and he was always cleaning the bar which was amazing to see! We would go to the same bar every night specifically to be served by Marcos and Osovaldo. Riu management, if you’re reading this I hope you recognize these employees because they truly work hard to satisfy RIU customers and are genuine kind humans.

The RIU fit (fun) team at this resort were great at their jobs. They had entertainment for all ages.

We stayed (my husband and me) at Playacar Resort from 8/1 to 8/8 and it was great. The resort is very nice and clean.
Everybody was very nice and helpful.
Room service is great. They were calling every day to check that everything is ok in the room.
Restaurants are great and food is always fresh and hot.
Everything is clean and sanitized every 10 min, employees were wearing masks at all times.
Temperature was taken before entering any of the restaurants.
Pool bar team (Myra) was great, drinks were always available in a timely manner.
Breakfast Buffet (Christina and Willi) were great taking care of serving coffee and cleaning tables after breakfast.
Pool entertainment (Fernando) was super duper nice, active, and friendly. He was always making sure to invite every single guest for activities at the pool and the beach.
The whole staff was always smiling and greeting everyone every day.

Thanks.
Marie

I have never stayed at this hotel but have shared the facilities when I stayed at the nearby Riu Yukatan. The lunch menu is amazing and because the restaurant is far enough away from the swimming pools wine is served in a glass not plastic. All the staff and the locals are really friendly.

When we got to the hotel we were told ocean front. We had a room on the third floor as well and told no elevators..so we hauled our luggage up all the stairs. Go to the balcony and it was far from an ocean view. We also had mounds and mounds of seaweed on the resort. So no ocean time there. The food was all buffet including the restaurants minus the steakhouse. It was always the same thing and not very good. Our door didn’t lock right so if we didn’t slam it shut you could just push it open. On the second night my significant other heard suit cases being unzipped as if someone was in our room. Turns out it was the neighbors and you could hear EVERYTHING through the walls. The staff spoke very little English. Which I get it’s Mexico, but you’d think we’d still be able to communicate a little. Our bedding was never changed just remade everyday and at one point we were changing to go to the pool and room service just walked in with no knocking or warning. The pools were smaller and to be honest unless you’re tipping very well don’t expect any kind of service at all. Overall the vacation was the worst I’ve ever been on and the most expensive. I do not at all recommend anyone staying there.

Spent a week at the Playacar from March 6-13. Check in was a breeze with a cool cocktail waiting. Nice clean room in building 4. Halfway in between the beach and the lobby . Perfect spot with balcony overlooking the walkway. Many Coati around to observe as well, especially in the morning. Lots of big bottles of water in the fridge and always more available at the lobby bar. Beach was beautiful, a couple of windy days but that’s always expected on the east side of Mexico. I’m usually a pool person but spent some time in the ocean as well. Lots of activities at the pool. Foam party on Wednesday, aqua aerobics daily, great music all around. Special shout out to Froy and Alberto at the lobby bar. We found that to be the best spot to sit in the evening and people watch and see the crazy drink requests. Tons of hand sanitizer at every turn and housekeeping staff never quits all over the resort. I hope after the covid19 pandemic settles people return to the resorts and help their tourism thrive. We will be back, we will refer. The Riu resorts never disappoint. We have been to 5 different Riu ‘s in Mexico and we will be back. Stay strong!🙏

The Playacar is once again wonderful There renos are cheery and the rooms very spacious. The once multi-coloured buildings are now all white and make the grounds seem much more open and airy. I loved it. The two new buildings fit right in and the new lobby is very large and room for entertainment after dinner.
The beach is wonderful and clean (except on rough days when the waves bring in the sea weed). You can still walk for miles either direction and the sea is nice and gets deeper very gradually, with no fast drops. Great for the kids. If you do not like the sea there are 3 pools, and not real crowded. As always the food is great and the staff in all departments are excellent and can't do enough for you. And they always have a smile.
I have been going to this hotel since it was first built and enjoy the small size in comparison to the other Riu's there, which you can use and go to shows and parties as well.
The plaza across the street is very handy with everything you need or forgot to bring!
....almost forgot... the new beds are wonderful and the pillows are plentiful and perfect
No complaints from me and will return the first two weeks of December (perfect weather) and will as usual see some return friends from many countries and meet new ones.

My wife and our 29 year old son, just got back from a Wonderful Vacation here at the Riu Playacar. We arrived Thursday Nov 5th through Tuesday Nov 10th.
We were Pleasantly Greeted by Cornealio, at the Lobby Entrance, who also took our suitcases up the stairs to our rooms. Vidal, at the Front Desk was a pleasure to Welcome us and help with all our Request. He even changed the batteries in our room Safe. Everything that could possible be done to prevent the spread of the Covid, was taken. There was mandatory Mask wearing in Lobby, Restaurants, Bars, and Public areas. Your temperature was taken and Hands Sanitized, before entering all of the Restaurants. The Resort is Very Clean and Constantly being kept up. I'm just letting you know, With all the cleaning, the floors are tile and slippery when wet. The food is great at all the Restaurants. The beach is clean and raked every morning. There is Plenty of Loungers to chose from at any time of the day. You can walk forever to the South and all the way to Playa Del Carmen to the North. The- walk by- Vendors are friendly and do not Hassle you. Just give them a, No Gracias, if you are not interested in what they have. The Service was Friendly and Fast at all the Bars and restaurants. I would like to acknowledge, several people that stood out, Concierge Cornealio, Front Desk, Vidal. Restaurant Staff, Alberto, Nestor, Romaldo, Francisco, . Bar Staff, Alberto, Rafa. Entertainment Steafanie. There were many more, but was not able to catch there names, with the fast service. We would come back here again, when it works out. Thanks to Everyone that made this an Enjoyable Vacation

We had our first stay here from March 13-20, 2021. There was low occupancy during our stay so the main buffet was not open, but the pool side buffet was and the other restaurant were open on a rotation basis. Our check in was easy and we were on the second floor of building 8, near the pools and beach. Our room was great and was cleaned daily. The food and service at all restaurants was excellent. All staff are friendly and helpful.
With the low occupancy there is never an issue finding great spots at the beach or pools. Drinks were served to you at both the beach and pools.
The grounds and facilities were were well maintained and cleaned multiple times each day.
Sanitation measures during our stay far exceed those at home in the USA. You are required to sanitize your hands and your temperature is taken when you enter each place food is served and you also step on a mat to sanitize your shoe soles.
Based upon our experience, we highly recommend the Riu Playacar.
