On arrival we booked a room on the water which stated on their website that it would have two beds. It did not. Their only solution was to bring us a cot which was twice as hard as their real beds. No ac here! Although they did decide to tell me they had it. The Manager was extremely rude!!!!!!! I asked three time for cups for the bathroom and still nothing! As far as water sports, we brought out the boogie boards and decided to use them again the next day. We were told that we needed to fill out a waiver, (totally understandable), when we said yesterday we hadn’t needed one we were told that’s because they were too busy, Then rudely told us we had one hour only! It’s Covid, they are only 25% booked and still can’t accommodate. I’ve also met other people with the same bad experiences. This is my 4th Riu and I’ve never had any problems until now. Please people DO NOT BOOK HERE!

Traveled with 3 other couples and we all had an excellent time.. Resort was spotless, rooms were disinfected daily, check your temp going into buffet and restaurants, pools were not crowded and clean, etc.. All in all an excellent trip. Water was warm and sky was clear. Riu employees very friendly and helpful.. This was my second time at this resort and I would definitely go back again. Food was very good also, they closed the dinner buffet and opened up the specialty restaurants to conserve on food (very good idea) so we ate dinner at each restaurant almost twice as we stayed 7 nights and 8 days...

Quick and easy check-in. Download the Riu app it will have very useful information for you. The entire staff of the Playacar was extremely friendly, especially Edwardo and Fernando on the entertainment team. The hotel was at 27% occupancy when we checked in. Very easy to social distance on the beach and around the pool. The breakfast and lunch were buffet style and all dinners were a la cart. The food at all restaurants was excellent. The drinks were all so good too! Your temperature was taken every time upon entering the restaurants. Also a squirt of hand sanitizer required too. The beach and ocean were very clean, not to much sargasm. What little bit there was was raked up every morning. Our room was very nice, had everything we needed and wanted. The 4 booze bottles on the wall have been removed, but we got to the bar enough! Masks were required any time you were inside, unless eating or drinking. We are frequent visitors to all the Riu's in the Playacar area. We do think the Playacar is a fantastic resort. We both felt safe all week. We will be back. Thank you to all the staff!

THE GOOD- This hotel was just what we wanted. We were there to dive the Cenotes so did not need anything expensive. This resort had a great beach and lots of shade around the pool. ScubaCaribe was right on the beach and Omar really took care of us. Thanks to Covid the resort was only 1/3 full (when a door closes, a window opens) and the place was immaculate. They had teams of workers cleaning round the clock. The food was average with the exception of the Italian restaurant. They did a great beef filet and the salad bar was a cut above. The service was superior and we really felt they cared. There is a small outdoor shopping center across the street and we bought all our Xmas gifts there. The Galeria directly across from the entrance to Riu had the best items and Gorge Monje will make you an excellent deal. Gorgeous handmade sterling pendants with semi-precious stones. Very unique. Don't forget to get the Guppies for your Puppies (fish pedicure). They don't do much but it's great fun. DOWNSIDE- The mattress rivaled my neighbor’s trampoline and the thermostat would not budge above 70 degrees. You could have packed meat in that room. The furniture was made of plastic laminate/ particle board and looked cheap. I cringe to think what it will look like in 20 years especially given this is a family resort. Be very careful of wet floors. The tiles are washed but not rinsed so there is some kind of residue on everything. I almost fell multiple times.

Room Tip: We always like the ground floor. At the end of the day, who wants to climb stairs?

My husband and I traveled during the pandemic so we knew it would be different. We were very impressed with our stay and would highly recommend! The resort is not fancy by any means, but that’s not what we were looking for. And it’s super clean! The staff were awesome and attentive! They took our temps each time we went into a food area and enforced the masks. Definitely felt safe! The pools were nice and clean and the beach was perfect. They raked the seaweed away for hours each day which was a thankless job but I’m thankful they did! 5 min cab ride to 5th Avenue. Would go back 100%!
