Our group had to quickly find a new destination and resort because our original vacation plans were interrupted due to air traffic controllers striking in Jamaica. Everyone agreed to switch to fly into Cancun but where would we stay? We knew we didn't want to stay in Cancun and then searched for Iberostar properties since we had previously stayed at an Iberorstar property in Jamaica. Based on reviews, we narrowed our choices to Iberostar Tucan and Iberostar Grand Parasio. Since this switch would mean us coming out of pocket to pay for the resort we chose Iberostar Tucan. Upon arrival we were excited to see the property looked really nice. However, we soon experienced a check-in process that was super long with subpar customer service. The check-in took at least one hour (there were 6 of us checking in at one time). Nothing about the resort was explained at this time or ever. We had to ask questions as we experience or needed to know info about the resort. Someone else from our group that arrived earlier stated that they had received a map and info about the resort. So there's truly a lack of consistency. Everyone's room was ready but mine. I didn't get into my room until well after 4:20pm although check in is at 3pm. I noticed several resort employees playing on their phones instead of being helpful/answering our questions. The rooms are rather small and outdated. Mine actually had hair and dirt on the floor, yet I was told I had to wait for my room because it was being cleaned. I would definitely recommend upgrading to an ocean view room otherwise your view are trees... lots of trees. The bathroom is really small and awkward. The door literally hits the toilet when you open it. The food was decent. We ate at two of the specialty restaurants. The Japanese restaurant food was bland. The smokehouse food was really tasty. We did not try the coleslaw after we saw raisins on it. I'm not a big buffet fan but I found breakfast to be the best. The made to order omelettes were really good. Service in the restaurants and bars were decent but of course if you tipped they gave you the world. I never experienced this at the property I stayed in at Jamaica. Overall, I felt like the resort workers did a lot of indirect haggling for tips by way of the service they provided. I don't get into ocean water but I was told and saw a lot of seaweed. Overall, the beach is cool. The spa was probably my favorite. The customer service and my massage were amazing.

Hotel's Favorite
I didn't expect to like the Tucan as much as I did - big, all inclusives aren't my typical choice - but i LOVED IT!! In fact, I could barely have loved it more. There is wildlife absolutely everywhere. We had howler monkeys on our balcony every day, and were treated to marauding posses of coatis, including the cutest babies you've ever seem. And the agoutis....well, don't mention the agoutis; they're EVERYWHERE! Iguanas, frigate birds, pelicans, mot mots, woodpeckers, raccoons, where do I stop? The only sad sight were the Toucans in cages. The food's great, the beach is better (yes, there's some sargasso, but don't let that get you down - i worried too much about it before arrival, but it's almost a non-event once you're there). The cocktails are potent and the grounds are to die for. Our teenagers rated this as the best hotel they've ever been to, and that's a compliment indeed as they're well travelled spoiled little b***ers :) The entertainment is definitely aimed more at our American friends (in fact, ours were the only English accents I heard the whole time), but it's quite a laugh in short bursts. I really can't recommended this place highly enough. I guess you might get more service at some of the flashier nearby offerings (this place has the audacity to make you get out of your sunlounger to go fetch yet another margarita) but i bet they can't compete with the drama, setting and downright beauty of the Tucan! My only regret is that Grant bloomin' Shapps turned the country red half way through our trip and we had to abandon ship :( :( :(

Such a beautiful resort and beach, and beautiful grounds so very lush with tons of amazing wildlife, but we will not be staying there again because of the way they trick you into upgrading and paying more. When you book your room online at at the price you can afford, you think you've got it covered, and that they would put you in a good room, right? WRONG. We booked a junior suite online, and not the standard room. We arrived early afternoon and waited around 30 minutes before they checked us in. We're hungry and tired, and they just make you wait, then they stick you in the furthest room from the beach and pool and tell you the hotel is full. Yeah, right. I immediately knew they had something up their sleeve. She says, well let me check again. Ha. They really think their guests are stupid. She comes back and says she can put us all the way at the front, next to the pool (right behind the ocean view building). Wow, it's a miracle! Ha. BUT it's a 60 dollar per night upgrade, but she'll let us have it for $30. Oh my goodness, they are just soooo generous! Ha. So that's what they do . . . probably the same in all the resorts I'm sure. Just know that whatever you book online is NOT the final price, if you care anything about a good spot in the resort. They just trick you into booking at a great rate, then stick it to you when you arrive, and take advantage of your "vacation" mood. So it took a whole hour to check in and then they want you to make your restaurant reservations. Forget it. I told them we would take care of the reservations the next day because we just want to get on with the vacation already. Not off to a good start in my book. They really need to streamline this ridiculous check in process. The food was pretty good most of the time. The Mediterranean restaurant was our fave. Hibachi was terrible, no flavor. Ate at the buffet most of the time during our week's stay. Easy to find some good food, but a lot was nasty. Especially the desserts. Yuck. Best part was the juices at breakfast. Cold pancakes, soggy waffles, and dry and flavorless desserts was not my idea of a good restaurant. By the fifth day, we were going out to town for our meals. Wait staff at the restaurants was hit and miss. We are big tippers, and we were sad to see such poor quality service, except for Benito at the main buffet. He was always excellent. All the others need to be trained by him! The drinks at the bars were mostly good. We tip big before they even start to make a drink, so this definitely helps. People in this crazy world we all live in these days are apparently deeply affected by the plandemic and the economic situation everywhere. You can see it in their faces as well as in the way people treat each other. People just don't care for others like they used to. We go to Mexico often, and this is the first time, at this resort, we have not seen smiling and friendly staff. They don't even look at you as you walk by. To be fair, a small handful of the staff were very friendly. So different from all our other experiences in Mexico. I do hope the resort sees this review. They could really stand for some improvements.

I am not one to leave bad reviews so instead I will simply list pros and cons. Lets start with the good things: - very clean resort, especially for how many animals are roaming around - friendly staff - pool never felt crowded and is very warm (however, when they advertise 4 pools they really mean 1 HUGE pool and 3 tiny pools) - scuba diving on site - a place to paint pots by the pool which was very fun - monkeys and peacocks!! Cons: - majority of workers speak little to no English - watered down alcohol - self service (no one is coming around the pool asking if you would like another drink) - not much to do after 7pm when the pool closes - no hot tub - the exchange rate from dollars to pesos is 1:19, however at the hotel they tell you the exchange rate is 1:17 (aka they rip you off) - seaweed on the beach - HORRIBLE food. I’m okay with mediocre buffet food but I expected A LOT more from the restaurants at night. The food was a deal breaker for me. I would not stay at this resort again because I felt like a spent 5 days without eating. Overall, I enjoyed time with my family and relaxing by the pool, but I would have been much happier if the food was better and drinks were stronger.

no plugs near beds. Had to unplug floor lamp and tv to plug my stuff. buffet was good, restos were okay (but didn't like the Japanese one---it was very loud and unrelaxing). The animals were awesome and are everywhere. Staff were friendly and didn't push for tips (though I tipped everytime). good location, 5 minute taxi to Centro and 10 min walk maybe...less, to playacar shopping mall. Flush didn't work had to jerry-rig something myself after complaining to reception twice and them sending nobody. (chain had corroded away) . they push you REAL hard to sign their very very expensive Elite membership (their version of time-share-not-timeshare-they-promise). They give you 150 Iberocash in exchange of 2 hours of bludgeoning you with their propaganda that you don't need to save your a mortgage when you can give them money so you can travel to the Carribean for free for 2x a year. I ultimately paid over 4k(CAD) for crappy room and having timeshare stuff pushed down my throat. I'm sure newer iberostar properties are better but this one needs renos (unless you can afford the STUNNING beachview villas ...reserved generally for their elite members). The mattress I got with my king room/poolside was like sleeping on concrete and they only give you 3 pillows and 2 seat cushions? (odd choice for 2 couples, i'd prefer 2 pillows each). Didn't feel like a 5 star experience in my room, but felt like it outside my room, so I'm torn. maybe I got gipped and it's a singular/unique exp

I had a fantastic time at the beach and my favorite employee/entertainer/friend was hands down Ivonne. She truly made our experience 100 times better. The food was much better than expected especially the beach food and although our trip isnt quite over yet were excited to try the rest of the restaurants!

My husband and I (in our late 30s) spent a week at the ocean front suite, and we absolutely loved it. Here’s what we enjoyed the most: Check-in: the fact that you don’t have to stand in a line after a long trip is just such a nice way to start! We sat down at the lobby bar and they used a tablet to complete the check in while we were drinking our mojitos :) Food: The buffets both have very tasty and diverse options. I think the quality of the food is definitely higher than the other all inclusive resorts we’ve been to. We enjoyed the fresh fruits, juices and the omelette station! Beach: I booked this hotel specifically for the beach and the location (Playacar) and it did not disappoint! Yes the see weed comes and goes but it wasn’t too bad. We loved the beach so much that we didn’t even go to the pool! Staff: They are the most accommodating! Super friendly, always smiling and hardworking people! Absolutely lovely! Room: I recommend the ocean front suites because the view is something you can never forget! The walk from the beach to the lobby is only 5 min. The location: Playacar is a gated community. Walk 5-6 min and there’s a cute plaza, a Starbucks and a great local bar with tons of little shops. There’s a bike/scooter rental too which you can take to Playa Del Carmen! Now the things we enjoyed a bit less: The mattress: I can see people have mentioned this in the other reviews as well so I do hope the hotel takes action on this! The mattress is too firm. Pillows are a bit lumpy and thin too… definitely need upgrades. The specialty restaurants: They lack the “experience” of the ala carte restaurants. The menu only offers the main dish and the appetizers and desserts are buffet style. Also you can only reserve 3 restaurants which I didn’t understand why… The night shows: We didn’t see any live bands which is a pity since I know there are tons of grear local bands in the area, playing for many similar resorts. Overall we truly enjoyed our stay and a few people made it even more special for us: Eliezer at the buffet, Vicario and Daniel at the beach bar, Jesus at the snack bar and many other wonderful people who made sure we had everything we needed. Thank you so much and we’re looking forward to seeing you again sometime soon 💙

Hands down, our favourite part of this resort was the incredible surroundings. It's like vacationing in the middle of the jungle with trees and lush gardens, monkeys, agoutis, peacocks, coatis, iguanas, it's amazing! The staff are also very helpful and kind. Our concierge, Joan, was incredibly helpful and somehow remembers the names of everyone he takes care of. He is such an asset to the resort and a real gem. We had many lovely waiters including Martin at breakfast, Trinidad, Angel, Jesus at dinner. I loved the tacos at dinner and the food was always varied with plenty of choices. Saving chairs at the pool/beach is an issue, but it has been everywhere we have vacationed down south. The beach was absolutely beautiful. I would absolutely return to Iberostar Tucan!

Our group of 11 ranging from 15 -60 had a great time! Buffet had a large selection of food each visit, from Mexican to Sushi to pizza. Breakfast buffet was really good too! We ate at Italian restaurant and Hibachi restaurant and both were good. Saw lots of monkeys, peacocks, flamingos, turtle, iguanas, and other wildlife! There was a lot of sargussum/seaweed in the water, so unfortunately we didn't really get to swim in the ocean, but the pool was fun and the entertainment staff did a great job with poolside games and dancing. Shows at night were enjoyable - the fire show was the best one, so don't miss that. We had a basic room in building 13 and liked the central location of that building and we had monkeys right outside our building one morning. There is no drink service at the pool or beach, so you have to get your own drinks, but that is no big deal to me. Bring your own yeti type cup, they will fill that for you. You do have to go claim your lounger at the pool by like 7 am if you want a good spot. We did this, and just went and had breakfast around 8 and came back by 9 or so. Noone removed our towels. Took a cab ride to downtown PDC, and it was $18 USD. There is a small shopping center that had some cute souvenirs that was about a 10 minute walk from the hotel as well. Loved our vacation and the resort!
