My family and I just came back from Viva Wyndham Azteca. We've stayed at this hotel three times now over the last four years. My wife and I travel extensively and this is one of our "return-to" resorts. Although it's by no means one of the better places is Riviera Maya, we like it. It does help that we are Viva Club members. Bottom line, it's a nice place for the money. The Good: My wife and I like the a la carte restaurants. We think the food is very good, and the service is always outstanding. In fact, the staff is great anywhere you go in the resort. We also love the beach, and the fact that there's plenty of shade for those who want it; even in the non-member area. The Bad: Right now the Riu next door is undergoing a significant renovation. They start work at 0800 and finish for the day at about 1700. It can get very noisy on that side of the resort, even inside the room. It's not noticeable at the pool or the beach, but if you're a late sleeper make sure you ask for a room away from the Riu. The other issue I'll mention is that it's not a good place to go in a large group. Anything greater than six people and getting a table for all, at the same time and in the same a la carte restaurant, is almost impossible. We were thirteen and, even when willing to split into two or three tables, we were only able to eat together twice; and on one of those we had to go with a "fixed menu". Speaking of which, I would not recommend the fixed menu. Shout Outs: Our thanks to Israel, at the Viva Club desk. He was very helpful and attentive. Also Cesar, who serves up drinks at the beach; and Pedro, at the bell desk, who was very helpful when we needed transportation.

Thank you for your comments ! We are glad to read that our Resort Viva Azteca is one of your return-to hotel. Our greatest satisfaction is knowing that our Club Viva members and customers feel like returning to our property in Playa del Carmen. it is true that our neighboring hotel is in a construction process right now but we are giving to our member the opportunity to move to the Maya Hotel for their convenience. About a la cart restaurant reservations; our policies have a maximum of people per booking to ensure adequate service to all our clients. Once again thank you and we will be glad to pass your comment to the staff that you mentioned in this review. We sincerely hope to see you again in a near future Club Viva Management

The hotel is slightly dated but I think the overall setup is pretty nice . The rooms are clean , well maintained and the hotel staff is excellent . This excellence does not apply to the reception staff (I could even mention names since I’m here now ). They’re just very lackluster and tbh, they’re not equipped , or is it within their purvey , to handle complaints or suggestions. Their apathy is apparent . The food is excellent and the beach is very nice and very well maintained . The entertainment staff is great but Americans should know that the focus is on the Europeans. This is not to our exclusion , it is simply a matter of their being the majority of the consumers/guests . Everyone on staff ,other than the aforementioned, is very atttentive for the most part . The one thing that has come up ,and seems very trite to me , is an issue with the water bottles provided in the room . After exactly a week here and one more to go , it was mentioned to my parents (with whom I am traveling) that you need to join the Viva Club to receive bottled water in your room. I was rather astounded, and somewhat amused , on hearing this. I’ve personally never seen anyone in line to refill a used water bottle and it seems that that was the front desks solution . Barring the unsanitary factor , to be held hostage for bottled water is petty. Both my parents are mobility challenged and the hotel is fairly well set up for that issue but the idea of a woman using a walker having to fill water bottles at the poolside seems ludicrous . (I would ask that hotel Mgmt not respond to this with the standard “pat” excuses I’ve seen and read from other reviews . Either fix this matter regarding water or don’t bother to respond with blather. I want to mention that I am polyglot. Spanish is my coequal language.)

Dear quinn s, Thank you for taking the time to write your feedback regarding your stay at Viva Wyndham Azteca. We sincerely appreciate hearing from our customers, as their comments are vital for us to continue improving our accommodations. We kindly inform you that we do not allow clients to refill the water bottles directly at the water stations for hygienic purposes. The bars and restaurants however provide drinking water 24 hours a day in plastic or glass cups. We would like to thank you again for your feedback and we hope to have the opportunity of regaining your trust the next time you visit the Riviera Maya. Kind regards, General Manager Viva Wyndham Azteca

Just got back from our week vacation and wanted to post this message Everything from the check-in to check-out met with our expectations or even more for how a trouble free vacation should be. Let me start with the room: Clean, spacious, well made beds, enough power outlets (supporting all devices from North America), nice balcony facing bamboo trees Food: Great variety that suits the needs of strict vegetarians like us too. Meat and sea food lovers would have a ball I guess Bar: Being non-alcoholic, the bar tender was so innovative with us after observing us for the first two days and came up with great Mocktails and we just loved it. Manuel (the bartender at the main bar) - we love you!!! Activities: Daily activities like Yoga on the beach, Zumba, Aerobics, Aqua fit, towel decoration were all conducted by the same team members who perform the shows in the night. (Maria, Stephanie, Manuel - we will miss you guys) Night Live Shows: At par with Vegas shows standard. The professionalism and zest with which the team performed here was beyond comparison (Great performances by Catherine (from Australia), Roberto, Ernesto) Great performers with amazing dancing skills and too good to keep the audience involved in their acts Azteca - we will for sure remember this vacation and will return some time in the future. This is definitely a place to consider for those travelling as a family with kids (of any age)

The beach was beautiful...the room was okay...from there it went down hill. No air conditioning in ANY of the restaurants . No pool bar...to get a drink you have to go up a flight of steps. NO drinks what so ever are allowed in the pool ..not even if you are just sitting on the edge dangling your legs in the water. The pool is very very small and heats up fast...so by noon you feel like you are bath water ( I am not kidding). You are given three bottle of water in your fridge in your room and three cans of pop. No one told us when the water is gone you were supposed to go refill them. I don't know where you could refill them because all the water dispensers had a sign on them that said no bottle refill. The food i would rate a D- at the best. My husband got sick the third day and i got sick the very next day...we stayed ten nights. We have NEVER got sick at any other resort. No music at the pool area ...if they did decide to play something it was elevator music and was kept down really low. There were no pool games only early morning aerobics...probably because the water was so warm. There are signs on the tables in the evening that say ...shhhh...quiet. I guess no one is allowed to have fun. My daughter and her hubby and their two old came down to surprise us. They had trouble getting water too...even though they told the people at the desk they needed it to make formula for their son. They were told IF they had any pop left they could swap it out for some water!! This is the worse vacation we have ever taken ....we will never stay at a Wyndham ever again.

The only reason I give this resort 3 stars is for the amazing entertainment staff, the Kids club staff and the all the other staff members with the exception of the Lobby staff. The food and the drinks were not really what you expect to receive from an all- inclusive resort. The food was basically the same every day , they just changed the location so you thought it was different. Most of the food was reheated the next day with 1 or 2 new items that you had to search for. Just imagine that they reused the hamburger buns with sesame seeds and used them for french toast(never saw this before). The worst is that the few things that could be eaten were saturated with salt and not edible. The worst joke was that they had a Barbecue night and it was just a tray of chicken slathered in bbq sauce everything else was the food from the previous night. I saw people go out to the shopping mall in Playacar and come back with food and six packs of beer and have other guests go up to them and ask where they could buy food and beer because they were tired of the Resort food and terrible beer. This resort is still stuck in the late 80's or 90's. Ugly and uncomfortable rooms. They apparently installed a tub over the original tub and now it sits 2 feet above the floor so when you get in or out you need a step stool. The shower head is never above your head, you have to lower yourself to get your head wet (good thing I'm not tall, but my kids are and they just complained and complained). The check in was also ridiculous. I booked 2 rooms through Expedia and made sure to call the Resort and ask them to have joining rooms or at the very least be close by, I also informed them that I had booked a King size bed in 1 of the rooms which the person said that they cannot guarantee but would put it in the system. When we arrive for check in the gentleman gives us the room numbers and I ask if they were close to each other and he says no they are on different floors. They still asked us to look at the rooms to see if we wanted them. These were the reject rooms apparently no one wanted. After getting mad in the Lobby after seeing these rooms, I said that I was not going to accept the rooms and that they needed to find me something else even if I had to pay more or give me a phone so that I can make a reservation in a different hotel. Voila!!! They suddenly have 2 rooms on the same floor 3 doors from each other, 1 with a king and 1 with 2 double beds. I did notice that this was common practice of changing rooms for guests and when they complained, give them what they booked. The marketing of the Resort is great because they get you with the "if you stay here you can use the facilities at Viva Maya which is a newer hotel and looks much better than this one. I should have saved money and just stayed in the Maya instead. If you are on a budget then I guess this place is OK. I have seen better for less money than I paid for this Resort. If it wasn't for the Staff, it would have been worse
