We stayed at Mahekal in a beachfront room for a week. We loved the hotel, the layout, the access to the beach and the on-site restaurants. The food was amazing and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Word of caution on the beachfront room- there is public access to the beach close to our room and it was always busy which meant a lot of noise late at night and into the early hours including parties, music, dogs barking, etc.; not ideal if you want peace and quiet. Also the bathroom was really hot; there’s no AC vent or airflow. In the hot months, it’s really hot in there. But we loved everything else enough that we’ll be back! We’ll just choose a different room.

Hotel's Favorite
My wife and I had an great stay at beautiful Mahekal Beach Resort. We arrive only hours after hurricane Zeta. They and a truck size generator powering the place due to power outage and staff of the resort did an amazing job with clean up. We we're lucky to have chosen a location prepared and ready to keep things open. Within a day you could hardly tell a storm went by. The restaurant had great food, but the attentive service was what made it special. They all knew our names and room within a day. They go above and beyond to make sure you are happy and enjoying every moment of your stay. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay. Rogelio and all the staff made it more than just a beautiful beach vacation. We'll remember the people as much as the place.

We stayed 4 nights in a Palapa King with Garden View. We chose this resort because all units are outdoors and private, and we wouldn't have to worry about crowding in a building with elevators during Covid. Even the reception is open to the outside air. WiFi is available all throughout the resort. The staff were all very pleasant, friendly, and always willing to help. They always wear their masks. Location was convenient and clean. It is only 45-60 minutes from Cancun International Airport. Mahekal is located near 5th Ave where all the shops and restaurants are. There's also a 7-Eleven and Oxxo convenience store next to the hotel. June-August is their hot season and lots of seaweed washes up on the beach. The hotel staff cleans as much of the seaweed they can. The other beaches along the cost of Riviera Maya will be the same. If you’re there during this time, you’ll most likely want to utilize the pools more. They have an infinity pool next to Las Olas and another pool next to Fuego. The Garden View area was quieter and more private than the Oceanfront homes. If you book a Palapa Room, keep an open mind. The room is very simple, but still doable if you're staying for less than a week. There is no TV, but you don't really need it when there's more relaxing things to do outside. Some bits of the dried palm leaves from the palapa roof can fall onto your bed and you'll hear the birds chirping early in the morning (they were my alarm clocks to start my days). You're outside in actual nature so you may also see coati (similar to a raccoon) and a monkey in the area. You'll have your own patio/balcony and the bellboy can help you put up the hammocks when he walks you to your room. There is no full-size mirror in these rooms, so I had to share the bathroom mirror with my boyfriend when getting ready every day. These weren't big issues for us, but if you're more used to “traditional” hotel rooms, then this room type might not be for you. We got the All-Inclusive package which was worth it! The food at Fuego and Las Olas were delicious. Some nights have live music, Lobster Night, and Happy Hour. You have a great view of the beach from these restaurants and they are open to the cool ocean breeze. These are the only restaurants at the resort that are open due to Covid. Soft drinks and liquor are included in the all-inclusive, but premium brands are an extra fee. Ice cream and coffees next to the Boutique are also included (shoutout to Cesar for the ice cream every day!). You can order drinks and snacks from the pools next to Fuego and Las Olas. Tips are already included in the prices, but I try to tip a little extra because they do provide great service. Shout outs to Ismael, Andres, Bernardino, and the rest of the restaurant/bar staff! It's our anniversary tradition to get couple's massages so we made a same-day appointment at Revive Spa. Marco welcomed us and showed us the amenities. The facility is clean and luxurious. (There is also an option to get massages on the beach if you wanted to.) With an all-inclusive package, you get a small discount on services and 10-15 minutes in the jacuzzi so arrive 30 minutes before your appointment to enjoy the perks and prepare for the massage. We were satisfied with our massages from Alejandra and Yessica. They are good at what they do! I prefer stronger massages and Alejandra delivered. Prices were reasonable and you'll get charged to your room at check-out. We decided to book last minute tours because of the seaweed on the beach situation. Normally, I use other travel sites to book excursions ahead of time, but we needed to be sure of confirmed bookings. Carlos at the hotel's Concierge was very helpful in finding us a spot on these tours that provided rountrip pickups/dropoffs. He has experienced most of these tours himself, so he was able to answer all our questions. He suggested the Whale Shark adventure tour because it was a seasonal popular activity. It was a very memorable experience! He has catalogs of many different activities to choose from. When he found out we were there for our anniversary, he made sure we received a hand-painted plaque to commemorate our stay. If your country requires a viral antigen (rapid) Covid-19 test during your departure, Mahekal offers testing for stays longer than 3 nights which is included in your booking already (PCR tests are an additional fee). When you check in, scan the QR code at the reception desk to register for an appointment. It’s supposed to take 24 hours for the testing company to reply with an appointment time. For some reason, we did not receive any reply from them, but they had us scheduled for the next day without telling us and we missed it. Cesar at the front desk helped us resolve the issues with our testing times and we were able to get scheduled on our 3rd day. Testing is done at the resort. Official results only took a few hours and you can pick up the paper copy from reception. They also e-mail it to you. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. Mahekal’s staff, amenities, and dining experiences made our anniversary memorable. We would definitely come back!

We just returned from our trip to Mahekal in Playa del Carmen. After a year of not traveling, we were hesitant to go international. And having gone and now back home, I can say it was totally worth it. I can't speak highly enough for the staff. They made us feel so cared for, like family during our stay. Every morning we were greeted by staff at breakfast. They got to know our names, and varying preferences across our extended family. Angel, Vianney, Enrique, Luis, Rogelio, Marcos are few that we will fondly remember. The property was well maintained, amenities were lovely. Food was very good for an all inclusive plan. When any issues arose, they were taken care of immediately. We will definitely return to Mahekal. The only thing that is disappointing at times is the sargassum on the shoreline and in the ocean. Though to be honest, the resort and the staff make up for it. Thank you to all the staff at Mahekal! We look forward to returning!
