Reviews Summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

Nestled in a prime location with stunning ocean views, Iberostar Quetzal is celebrated for its friendly atmosphere and attentive service, with staff members often going the extra mile to please guests. While the resort's beach and pool are highlights, and the cleanliness is consistently lauded, some visitors suggest that the rooms could benefit from modernization and quieter spaces. Despite its charms, the value proposition is questioned by many travelers, who point out additional costs and aggressive sales tactics that can detract from the overall experience.

We had a wonderful time at the Iberostar Quetzal. Good food, good drinks, lovely grounds with an assortment of animals and a beautiful beach. Download the Iberostar app!! It has the daily activities listed, the restaurants and menus (and the days they are open) plus other information. There are also sceens in the lobby. The Room We were in building 23 on the second floor. It was close to the pool area and also the paths that wound through the natural jungle setting that is in the middle of this resort. This area was a delight to walk through and to see the animals, peacocks, iguanas, agoutis, howler monkeys and more. Our room was exactly as pictured on the hotel's website. No issues with air conditioning or water pressure. Your bracelet is your room We even had a peacock on our balcony three times during our stay. The Food Breakfast at the Cozumel was the same each day but there was a wide variety of items to choose from and mimosas were available. Lunch was at the Tulum buffet (Toucan side of the resort). There was something different every day (sushi, poke bowls) and always grilled meats and seafood, Mexican items, salads, fruits, desserts and more. The Iberostar no longer requires reservations for the a la carte restaurants except for the Japanese one (teppanyaki). You could go to the same restaurant every night if you if want to do so. Mare Nostrum (Mediterranean/seafood) Order your entree and then get your appetizers (and desserts) in the centre of the restaurant. Grilled octopus was delicious, paella was good. We enjoyed it so much we went a second time. Bonsai (Japanese) A set menu with sushi and miso soup and then a show while cooking the main entrees. A fun evening. Make your reservation! La Hacienda (Smokehouse) A set menu for meat lovers with grilled chicken, pulled pork (both great) and beef brisket (needed to be cooked more). A lot of food and we couldn't eat it all La Gondola (Italian) Our least favourite. Why do people go here to have pizza and pasta when you can get it at the lunch buffet?? We had salmon which was slightly over done. It was also the busiest of the a la carte restaurants. Get there before 6pm as there will be a line up. Otherwise, you will have to wait an hour or so to get in. Since it seems so popular, perhaps reservations might be needed for this place. The Beach It is cleaned of seaweed and groomed every morning! Much cleaner than the beaches at the other resorts. If you want to be sitting at the beach, most loungers were marked by towels by 7:30am! The Pools The large pool varies in depth from 4.5 to 5.5 feet. If you're not a good swimmer bring a floatie (or you can purchase one there). It has a lot of activities throughout the day. The shallow spots were at the very front and back of this large pool. Once again, if you want to sit by the pool, you had to be out there before 8am to claim your place. We found the smaller sports pool more to our liking as it had good shade and was a lot quieter. We were always able to get a spot after breakfast usually by 9:30am. The Staff We found the staff to be polite and helpful. The young ladies who greeted us at the buffet always had a wonderful smile for everyone. This is one resort we would consider returning to for another visit!

Dear guest, We would like first of all to thank you for your most appreciative review. It is gratifying to know that our beautiful natural surroundings were to your liking, our natural scenarios are indeed a beautiful characteristic of our hotels. Also, we are delighted to read that the wonderful service of our team was able to make your visit memorable. On the other hand, we are saddened to hear that our culinary offer did not live up to your expectations because a passion for gastronomy is one of the strengths of our company. Daily we strive to take care of our varied menus that combine quality and quantity following high standards. We will share your comments with our team of chefs because; at Iberostar we know that the well-being of our guests is the reason for our daily work. It is nice to know that you hold us in fond memories and we hope that you visit us again soon. Best Regards, Quality Manager Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal

Hotel's Favorite
Overall - amazing place. Pros: beautiful grounds, amazing jungle area where one can see lots of monkeys, peacocks, agoutis and birds. Very nice beach with no rocks or seaweed which we found at other hotels in Mexico in the past. Grounds and room were clean. Food was amazing, we all found something we liked everyday. Drinks were very good. Majority of staff nice and friendly. The bracelet you get is also the room key which we loved! Cons: First disappointment came upon check in. I specifically booked the Iberostar Tucan hotel about 7 weeks before traveling. Debated between Tucan and Quetzal but told the travel agent (SelloffVacations) that I want Tucan. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were informed that the Tucan hotel rooms are all full and we will be staying at the Quetzal side. We were not happy, but nothing we could do. We waited 2 days after arrival to book restaurants - only managed to get 1 reservation at the Italian restaurant - overall good food and nice atmosphere, although when we were seated no-one explained anything so we sat around for maybe 15 mins waiting to order the appetizers etc from the menu card, and when I asked one of the waiters when we can order she said we get them ourselves from the buffet in the middle. The water in the main pool was deep, only 2 areas of the pool were shallower. I'm 170 cm tall and had to tip toe around the pool to keep my head above the water and in some areas could not touch the bottom. I can swim so it wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it wasn't very pleasant when I tried to play ball with my daughter or relax. We stayed in room 2823 - right by the lobby. Room was very loud in the evenings until about 11 pm from the karaoke/shows. Didn't bother us bad enough to pay 300 US $ to upgrade to a room closer to the middle of the resort, but if we had a small child or liked to go to bed early, we probably would have had to do that. A lot of activities offered were at extra cost and the prices were out of this world. Evening show on the beach (fire show) $65 US pp. Temporary small tattoo of a skull $80! Massage (1 hour I believe?)- $230 US. And the list goes on. The phone in the room does not work, so no way to call the reception etc. The tv in the room also does not work (normally we don't watch tv on vacation, but when we were there, it rained daily and we had to hide in the room for hours sometimes. Good thing we brought card games and phones, otherwise would not have much to do). The evening shows were mediocre. The people in the lobby tried to get us to come to the Time share presentation. Would leave notes under the room door and get us to fill out questionnaires at the lobby. When we said we would definitely not go to it, they left us alone though. Resort is eco friendly, which means no smoking anywhere except several dedicated areas. I personally loved that, however my husband who enjoys having a cigar on vacation while having a drink in the lobby or on the balcony in the evenings - did not. Overall, we would recommend this hotel and we had a good time. Would probably return if the price is right.

We started going to Iberostar Quetzal/Tucán in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico in 2002. That year we met Rafael, a waiter in the buffet that became a very good friend of ours and is still working there. Over the years we have made many friends at the resort which some have moved up in the company and others that are still there. The wait staff at the buffet are amazing (Rafael, Jorge, Mirian) and the hostesses (Karina, Sandra) welcome you with a big smile. The food is Great! In 2016 we joined The Club to have the ultimate experience. Sayra and Igor that helped us in joining The Club are fantastic to work with. Jessica and Alexis at the Star Prestige lobby made sure that our trip was perfect. Mario the bartender in the lobby is the Best. At the Star Prestige area at the beach Javier and Emmanuel made sure our bed ready for us to relax. Neyci our beach waitress is one of the hardest working and most importantly friendly waitress around. She is the Best! This resort has a lot to offer from a white sand beach to a jungle with all kind of animals and birds. The resort is located on the southern end of Playa Del Carmen in the jungle and east of the golf course in Playacar. There are so many different animals and birds (Howler Monkeys, Sereques, Flamingos, Iguanas, Coatis, Gray Crown Crane, Great Kiskadee, etc.).

We arrived in the evening after lengthy delays at the airport and issuers with hotel transfer. Certainly no fault of the resort. It was thirteen hours from the time we left home. We were tired and hungry. Check in was quick. We were then approached by another staff who wanted to give us information on book restaurant reservations. He started talking about giving us free gifts. To make a long story short this is nothing more than trying to sell you a very expensive plan for perks at Iberostar resorts. He was relentless and would not take no for an answer. We finally walked away. Throughout our stay we were approached by three other staff with the same pressure sales tactics. We were told that they wanted us to be fully informed on how we can enjoy our stay at Iberostar to the fullest so these sessions were being offered. Any information that needed to be passed on about this sales offer can easily by done through the TV which defaults to the resort information page when turned on or to the hotel phone app or by placing information pamphlets in the room. This cheapens the whole resort experience. We were offered to upgrade to an ocean view room for $99 a night! Not an offer I would even consider. We stayed on the third floor of the 29 block, close to the lobby. The area was quiet. No noise from the lobby bar which had nightly entertainment. We stayed one night in our assigned room, then request a room change because of a strong sewer smell. Our request was met with no issues. The rooms in this resort are all similar, they are old, small and in need of upgrades. There is very limited storage space. No many place to plug in electronics. There were no issues with the TV ( only what briefly in the morning to get the news) hairdryer and iron worked. We did not use the coffee maker since we don't drink coffee, but it looked new. One thing we found a little creepy was the dim light in the ceiling which came on when it detected movement. we assumed that it was a night light. Creepy non the less. The room was very clean. In fact cleanliness was evident throughout the resort. We were very impressed. Everywhere you looked you saw someone cleaning, raking, cleaning. We did enjoy the little jungle setting and the wildlife. It was certainly worth while to take a walk around and enjoy the animals. The beach was OK but we were never able to get a lounge chair. The chairs were always occupied by people or towels. The same was true for the pool area. We would go to the pool after an early breakfast and stay for the day. We noticed that there were loungers with towels over them which did not get occupied until until later in the afternoon. We were told that staff monitor the reservation of loungers but we did not find this to be the case. The food was good and plentiful. The day after we arrived, reservations for the ala cart restaurants, except for the Japanese restaurant, were no longer required. Iberostar resorts have been our choice of resorts. This resort certainly falls short of the 5 star rating being given by some reviewers. We applaud the resort for being eco friendly, its smoke free policy, for clean rooms and grounds but the rooms are outdated and not what is expected in a 5 star. We also found that some of the staff were less than friendly and avoided engaging. We will not be returning to this resort but suggest that others could find a different experience.

Overall, my family had a lovely vacation. However, when we arrived at the resort, we were asked if we would like to upgrade our room for an additional cost. We did. Unfortunately, our upgraded building experienced a continuous lack of water. On three occasions , on three separate days, we could not shower or flush the toilet. When I spoke to the front desk about it, they acknowledged that the block of rooms we were in didn’t have water and that the problem would be fixed. They also mentioned that they were aware that the block we upgraded to was known to experience this problem. (This wasn’t mentioned at the time we agreed to upgrade our room. If it was, we would not have payed the additional cost!) At that time, I asked if we would still be charged the upgrade fee seeing as a room without water was definitely not ideal. I was told that the issue would be addressed at checkout. When I mentioned the situation at check out, I was met with quite an aggressive/ defensive response and was told that the lack of water only happened once. I was also told that they couldn’t do anything about reversing the upgrade fee. We were asked to sign a legal document stating that the resort would reimburse us approximately $40 if we would not address the matter further. We didn’t sign the document as we felt uncomfortable signing something that we did not have time to fully read. I totally understand that nothing is perfect, especially while travelling. And my family actually had a great time. My concern is that when something did pop up, the resort handled it in such a negative manner.

The Iberostar Quetzal/Toucan, being two resorts that function on the same property, is a resort that I've stayed at for approximately 11 out of the last 15 years. It's not the highest end resort but it has an ambience and smaller property atmosphere that we've enjoyed enough to continually return to. We've established relationships with wait staff and bartenders in most of the restaurants and lobby bars and even came to renew our acquaintance with the former site manager over the years. It was always like coming home... until this year. This year we met, or was subjected to, Hector! Ostensibly the host at the Mediterranean Restaurant, we were insulted and humiliated by him from the time we checked in with our reservation. He appeared to not understand the check in 'technology'. After I asked to be seated in a section serviced by a waiter that we had come to know quite well over the years, we were literally scoffed at and sneered at, nice look Hector!, and flat told NO. I said, "What?" and received no response whatsoever. We continued to watch, over the course of our meal, at how he addressed the entire wait staff and to say I felt sorry for them is an understatement of epic proportion. The Mediterranean is one of several 'Specialty' restaurants at the site and to have to endure a meal in that kind of setting is enough to wreck a persons whole night. I did ask one of the waitstaff what his problem is, is he just an !**^%$#? A one word answer, yes! They continue to do their surveys but the Iberostar just doesn't ask the right questions. Is there another resort who is willing to claim the ability to offer a comparable service and experience in the Riviera Maya to people willing to spend multiple years at their resort? You DON'T have a Hector do you?

Dear Guest, Thank you for choosing Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal for your recent holiday. Our main goal is to provide our guests with an amazing experience, and we are concerned to read that the quality of our service did not meet your expectations. It is important to mention that all our guests are equally important to us, without any distinction. Our team constantly strives to provide our guests the best experiences, hand in hand with a friendly, warm and timely service at all times. We thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention and we regret not having made you feel as the important guest you are to us. On the other hand, we must say we are startled to read your observations regarding our gastronomy. Allow us to mention that we work with high standards and protocols regarding hygiene, health, sanitation, service and safety. In order to maintain these high standards our team of Chefs daily supervises that the food is prepared with the highest levels of hygiene and quality, from the moment each dish is prepared, until we deliver it to our guests. In addition to this, we have daily inspections carried out by our Quality & Hygiene department as well as by an external company. Everything is continuously inspected, from our ingredients, temperatures, water, procedures, and every tool and equipment used for food handling. Once more, we would like to thank you for your invaluable opinion, and we hope that you had a pleasant journey home. Best regards, Quality Manager Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal
