Nestled in a serene beachfront location, Royal Hideaway Playacar often receives compliments for its lush grounds, beautiful beach, and variety of pools, though some guests feel updates are needed. While the elegant atmosphere and cleanliness are highlights, including well-maintained grounds and rooms, visitors suggest that modern touches and livelier evening entertainment would enhance the experience.
Service is generally regarded as attentive, but efficiency can waver, particularly during check-in. Travelers have mixed feelings about value, facing a blend of affordability and unexpected costs, and while noise can be an issue for some, many find it a tranquil retreat.

My husband and I joined a large group of friends and music lovers for an event sponsored by a musician friend. We were absolutely delighted from the moment we arrived. It was quite late at night but we were offered a room service meal since we had not eaten. Our room was beyond lovely and had all modern conveniences. The grounds and buildings are beautiful. Crews work constantly to maintain pristine lawns, pools and beaches. We were in Villa 25 which was a perfect location between the main building and restaurants, and the pools and beach area restaurants. Our concierge Maria was extremely helpful in booking restaurant reservations and ensuring that we had everything we needed. She was gracious, courteous and attentive. In fact, she anticipated our needs and had box lunches prepared and waiting for us at check out. We hope to return to this lovely resort sometime in the future!

My girlfriend and I just returned from a two week vacation at Royal Hideaway. I am a seasoned cruiser and I’ve spent many vacations in the Caribbean. It was time for a change so we made the decision to change it up by booking a destination spot in the Caribbean. It turned out to be a great decision.
We totally enjoyed our stay at Royal Hideaway Playa del Carmen. When it comes to food, service, drinks, cleanliness, comfort and accommodations, Royal Hideaway does not have any problem at matching cruise lines for quality. Public spaces are large, rich with stone, and well maintained. Public washrooms have frequent cleanings all day long and are spotless at all times. Our concierge David, and all the staff at the resort took great care of us. The staff is very friendly and approachable. They aim to please.
The beach is clean, and beautiful with plenty of shade from palm trees and the half clam shelters. There is plenty of open area for suntanning and enough pool chairs around the pool. Get up early if you want one; it’s no different than any other resort or cruiseship.
We had two small issues. The drain in our shower was slow at draining when we arrived. Our concierge David called maintenance, and 15 minutes later it was repaired. We booked and paid for the chefs table but unfortunately once we did the conversion from the Peso to the Canadian dollar we found it quite pricey. We asked, and were given a full refund by the resort without having to put up any fuss.
This resort pays attention to detail and they take care of their guests. As a seasoned traveller I would highly recommend this resort and we will return in the near future.

Overall a wonderful experience. The food was excellent in all the restaurants, the treatment of all the service staff was formidable. For a low cost we were able to go fishing with Teo, the fishing instructor, on a katamaran where he taught us how to use the fishing line and then we shared a ceviche with what we caught. The hotel is excellent for walking from top to bottom without getting too tired to go to the beach and the different restaurants. The rooms are small but they fulfill their function, they are fresh, comfortable in general and have a minibar that is filled when they clean up. Our special mention and gratitude to concierge Roberto from villa 26, he is very kind and attentive, he answered all our questions and with him we contracted extra services such as Balinese beds on the beach and a tour to Xenses, all very quickly and without any setbacks, He also helped us book all of our dinners and was kind and attentive in granting our requests to change restaurants when we found our favorite. The level of attention, amenities and service are very much at the level of a Royal Level in other hotels. They also offered us free transportation to and from the airport.
Our favorite restaurant is Ventanas, where I have had the best dinner of my life so far. The recommendations of waiter David at the Ventanas restaurant surely improved my experience. Also special mention for Eduardo from the Palazzo restaurant who explained the ingredients of each dish and recommended the drinks to accompany it.
If I have to provide only one constructive criticism, it would be to increase their selection of pillows, since although they have many, they are all of great volume and hardness and they do not offer anything thinner or softer, after that everything else is excellent.
Overall an excellent experience, I can't wait to return.

We've visited the RH 4 times in the past dating back to the early 2000's. So, we decided after a long time away to try it this December 2024. We came away very disappointed.
Pros: building facias and landscaping are beautifully maintained. The beach is now one of the largest (deepest) in Playacar. Wait staff is very attentive. Restaurants decor are generally con-temporized, and the food is good to very good.
Cons: Mind you, our visits in the past were while RH was owned and operated by Occidental. Now, Barcelo owns and operates this tired gem. The room interiors are very tired and worn. Bathroom fixtures all need updating, while room furniture shows its' age and could use major updating. Room lighting is dark, and lampshades are stained with age. Sorry RH, you can put lipstick on a pig etc... Breakfast buffet and lunch buffets are lacking diversity, with very mediocre selections. Pool chair placements are too tight like sardines cans for humans; a very tight and impersonal space. Beach chairs are the most uncomfortable we've ever sat in. While the attempt to offer beach shade falls short with personal chair 'canopies' that just don't work, or for most are lacking the 'ropes' needed to assemble them properly. This is a major failing of the pool/beach maintenance crews.
In closing: RH was a very nice hotel many years ago, but has been ignored of late. Possibly for being sold to another chain that does not but much importance on the charm and character of this hotels past owners.

Beach: The beach was beautiful with clean, clam-free waters and no seaweed or rocks in sight—perfect! A suggestion for management: it would be great if the beach could be cleaned every morning, as some neighboring resorts do.
Rooms: The rooms were comfortable, and with an occupancy of 200 adults, the size felt just right.
Lounge chairs: By the pool were incredibly comfortable—honestly, we’d probably come back just for that and the beautiful beach!
Food: While I did hear some complaints from other guests, I personally had no issues, especially since I mostly enjoy fruits and salads. Thank you for getting me my beloved FRESH CACTUSES! The best mushroom dish I had was at Ventanas (so delicious), and Azia had the best edamames. The pastries were also a treat.
Service: Our concierge, Fernanda, along with Roberto, were incredibly efficient, proactive, and all-around fabulous. I truly wish I could have them in my daily life! Rudy and David at the buffet were always pleasant, helpful, and made breakfast and lunch more enjoyable. We’d definitely miss them if they weren’t around. Michelle, along with the rest of the kitchen team, was incredibly accommodating, always willing to get me whatever I needed—even if it wasn’t on the menu. Esther, in her gray uniform, always with a warm and positive attitude. Mr. Samuel Borges and Carlos-at Ventanas made sure we had everything we needed, so professional and welcoming. Carlos and Ari from the entertainment team were wonderful, making us feel truly at home. Lupita, our cleaning lady, and the maintenance team were also fantastic—thanks for fixing our shower so quickly (even redoing the floor after breaking the ceramic).
The turndown service was a lovely touch and much appreciated.
Entertainment: The Thursday afternoon guitar player by the beach was a highlight—such a great treat! The rock and jazz bands in the evening were also fabulous and made for great nighttime entertainment.
Internet: The only downside was the internet connection, which was very poor.
Overall: Despite the internet issues, we had a fantastic stay. Thank you to everyone who made our experience so enjoyable and memorable!
N.B. For those who enjoy working out, the hotel gym is small, but there's a fantastic gym just across the street called Be Element. I loved their yoga, pilates, and barre classes—definitely worth trying!

Response from Costumer Care, Other at Royal Hideaway Playacar
The Royal Hideaway is located in Playacar a gated area just outside of Playa Del Carmen. The hotel is safe and is located on the most beautiful stretch of powder white beachfront. Upon arrival you will pull up to the resort and the hotel leaves you with a good first impression . When checking in you will immediately start to see where the issues around service rear their ugly head. Check in is a slow and painful waiting process that can take over a hour to get you settled in. The hotel has seen its better days and as of March 2024, is really in need of some updating and renovations. My wife and I were on the ground floor Sunrise Room and our balcony and view were perfect. The room was very worn out and did not meet the standards the hotel advertised. The bed was very comfortable however the room fan had cobwebs on it, there were water stains in the ceiling and areas in the room where the paint was coming off the wall . In the shared area where our concierge sat, there was rust on the support beams and very little effort to resolve this. Room service was adequate however you had to wait until 7:00 am to order breakfast in your room. We are early risers so this was a bit frustrating. I would go to the gym and order my breakfast at 7:00 am when I returned. The gym was very limited but since it wasn’t crowded I was able to get a good workout in. The breakfast buffet was probably the most limited and poorest quality of all the resorts I have visited in the area. The lunch menu was also substandard for this hotel price point. The grounds and pool areas were just ok by comparison to our 5star resorts in the area. If you wanted a poolside lounger you would have to get up very early to set your towels on your chair. My wife and I prefer the beach area but even the beach loungers were worn out and broken. Beach service was terrible and we are tippers which I found very strange because there were very few guests tipping. The dinner restaurants were very good with the exception of the Mexican restaurant which was terrible. The Italian restaurant we enjoyed the most . Dinners run late so allow 2 hours at least for every dinner. My wife and I had a great time regardless of the resort issues but that’s because we are a laid back couple. I really hope that the hotel reviews my comments and makes the necessary changes to improve the resort for future guests. I would not recommend this resort and I will not return. If you would like a much better experience I would recommend the Riu Palace Riviera Maya which is only two hotels away from the Hideaway. My wife and I have been travelling to the Mayan riviera for the past 30 years so we have visited a lot of hotels in this area. The Royal Hideaway does not meet the standards they are advertising and it is overpriced for what you are getting. Hope they make changes soon.

Dear FibberODaighre Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We deeply regret that your experience at Royal Hideaway Playacar did not meet your expectations. Your insights are incredibly valuable to us as they help identify areas needing immediate attention and improvement. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the beautiful beachfront location and felt safe within our gated area. However, we sincerely apologize for the issues you encountered, particularly with the check-in process. We understand that a long and frustrating check-in can set a negative tone for your stay, and we are taking steps to streamline and expedite this process for future guests. We also apologize for the limited room service hours and the condition of the gym. We will review these services to better accommodate early risers and ensure our fitness facilities meet guests' expectations. The quality of the breakfast buffet and lunch menu not meeting your standards is disappointing to hear. We strive to provide a variety of high-quality food options and will work with our culinary team to improve these offerings. Additionally, the condition of the loungers and the lack of attentive beach service are issues we are addressing immediately. We appreciate your positive remarks about our dinner restaurants, particularly the Italian restaurant, and we will use your feedback to enhance the dining experience across all venues, including the Mexican restaurant. Your overall experience and satisfaction are important to us. We understand that you have many options when visiting the Mayan Riviera, and we apologize for not meeting your expectations. We are committed to making the necessary changes and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future for a significantly improved experience. Thank you again for your constructive feedback. Best regards, Customer Care Lorena Luvian

My first time at an all-inclusive so Ididn’t know what to expect but my family was complaining about several things because they had done other places. I was disappointed in the spa prices. It was about $200 for a massage so we went into town and found one for $90 for an hour and a half. There was no nightlife whatsoever. A small bar with a patio setting and a band a few times while we were there, but it was very poor quality music and the bar itself had a very strong spearmint smell that gave me a headache. The bed was comfortable and sheets were always clean. Staff was always very nice and accommodating There was no nightlife and no activities The beach is beautiful and perfectly maintained, but you have to go out and fight for a chair early in the morning or you won’t get one the whole day There’s no hot tub So basically after dinner at 7:30 or 8, there’s nothing to do. I wouldn’t recommend this resort because of this. But the food was really good grounds were clean and I feel guilty giving them this review but they need to step up there game for evening entertainment, considering it’s an adult only

This resort has one of best beaches in Playa del Carmen.
The resort is set into different clusters scattered through out the property sorrounded by beautiful manicured gardens with water features. Each cluster or Villa has a presonalized concierge that will take care of all your needs. In our case, I would like to mention Roberto Guerra did a wonderful job.
Rooms are very spacious, comfortable, good beds and extremely clean. We liked the detail that every night the room was setup up for sleeping with sleepers on the side, a treat on the pillow, bottle of water and glass on the side. The terrace has a couple of very comfortable chairs.
The whole staff has been great, very kind people, reception, concierge, pool people, waiters, hostess, all of them.
I would like to mention one of the outstanding restaurants, Grill with Carlos Quintal as responsible, my wife and I had such a wonderful evening, the food was delicious and above all, the staff was warm and helpful.
The place is adults only which gives some peace if you want to relax.
Pools are good and the tanning beds in the beach are great, we always found some at our disposal.

This is our second visit to Royal Hideaway. This year was even better than last year. They have improved on some things that were an issue last year...they added beach chairs which were hard to secure last year and are now grooming the beach. The food is incredible at the Royal Hideaway. Don't be afraid to order new things.
The only advise I would give is to make sure they have documentation of a request for one or two beds in the room. We had a luxury sunrise booked and are a married couple and were given a room with 2 doubles (which were actually more the size of queens). They said the hotel was full and could not give us a king. A little frustrating start to our stay.
The beach is so beautiful and the staff is incredible. If you are lucky enough to meet Ricky Rosas, a concierge, you will be so blessed.

We spent a week at this resort. The lobby is beautiful and evokes an 17th century Italian castle? Full of stone, columns, tapestries and beautifully carved wood furniture. The staff is very responsive and welcoming. They are committed to making your stay comfortable and memorable. The rooms are similarly styled to the lobby and have a separate shower, tub and toilet area as well as doors that close off bath area from sleeping area. Rooms have large king beds, lots of pillows, desk, charging poets, night stands, reading chair, patio seating area, vault and walk in closet! We found all the restaurants to have well thought out dishes that are very tasty and presented in creative and artistic ways. The beach side pools (2) are adequately sized and cleaned well. There are also several hidden pools off the beach with nice solace! The poolside waiter service serves a small menu of delicious snack/lunch items and whatever drinks you desire. The Bartenders pour generously and don't mind giving you whatever brand you prefer in your mixed drinks. The resort has several higher end liquors in each category and they don't seem to run out of the good stuff like I've seen at other resorts! This is a good resort for those who don't have great mobility because it is a short walk from lobby to anywhere! There is a really nice beach and beach loungers with shade covers. The beach has seaweed like everywhere in the region but is meticulously cleaned by about 8 a.m. My wife and I enjoyed a beautiful anniversary dinner in Ventanas restaurant. Our waiter Nicholas was excellent with his English, friendly manner, accommodating attitude, and knowledge of the menu. Bonito, our chef came to the table to meet is and prepared excellent specialties like capacity salmon veet marinade salad, scallops with a coconut curry sauce and a steak piranha with an excellent sauce on top! We also had 4 desserts! So stuffed! Special thanks to the Bartenders at pool who made great drinks including Jose de LA paz, minerva Perez, Ariel, Luis nieto, manual Reyes, and Ishmael noh. E trordinary waiters include Alfredo castellanos, Eduardo Be at pallazo, and David at Ventanas. Our Concierges Roberto Guerra and Lorena were very helpful in Making sure our rooms were comfortable and we had dinner reservations. I would also like to thank Sandra Gonzalez who came to our room to visit with my wife and I and made sure out stay was going g well and was keen on fixing any issues we encountered. Theentertainment staff speaks English well and are great at getting people involved with games, trivia, aerobics, bocci, volleyball, ping pong, cornhole etc! I would highly recommend this resort for a romantic, relaxing vacation for couples.
