Hotel's Favorite
We brought our 2 kids (3&5) for one week and had the best time. It was so relaxing and exactly what we needed to get away. We’re already ready to go back!! I can’t say enough about the great staff - so kind and helpful- with absolutely anything we needed. They were so accommodating. Including our concierge, Claudia. It was so nice to have someone to help us each day; and she’s awesome! Everything was also very clean. We felt very comfortable and safe and appreciated all of their protocols to sanitize and keep guests safe. The pool and beach area was amazing. Unbelievable. We loved all of the space and that it wasn’t difficult finding chairs. Each day, we bounced back and forth. Within the big pools, they had shallow areas about a foot deep which were awesome for the kids playing! And, aside from the big pool, there are pools throughout the property - which was so nice to “change the scenery” for afternoon vs morning (so spoiled, right?!). Plenty of pool bars, which was awesome for us parents too! On that note, the property itself was so beautiful and a huge plus of the resort. Big property, with varying landscape. We loved that they have a jungle walk and paths. It made it really fun for the kids. The food and restaurants were also great. No complaints. It was really nice that each restaurant had plenty of food options for kids - and they would put together anything requested outside of their normal “kid options.” All you had to do was ask. For example, we asked for grilled chicken, rice, vegetables, etc. based on the restaurant and it was no problem at all. They say you need to have reservations, but the resort occupancy was so low when we were there that it really wouldn’t have been an issue if you didn’t have them. I do wish they would have more lunch or all day food options - for snacks, lighter food, etc. For example, they have one full service sit down lunch, but they would benefit from another beach grill type restaurant (aside from the burger bar they have, and taco cart). I do think they are working on one (construction phase). The gym onsite was very nice. About 4-5 treadmills, at least one bike and one elliptical plus great weights. It looked onto the main plaza area which was nice for treadmill runs. My one word of warning/caution: they will try to offer to you to get you in a sales pitch meeting. We sat through it and it was high pressure. About an hour time commitment (no cutting it short) and it’s awkward because it is so high pressure. I feel like there has to be a better way for them to go about this. It’s a great resort and family of properties, but the sales approach could be a bit more mature. I have such wonderful memories from this trip and am appreciative for such great staff and the resort. Highly recommend!

Where to start. Well, we're a couple in our mid-thirties with a near 18 month old toddler. This was our first long haul post covid and after an extensive search of resort reviews and destinations, we settled on The Fives. It's advertised as a family resort that caters to all 5 of your senses and has a 5* rating to boot. We arrived late into the evening to find we had no reservation for our arrival, but actually had one for a few weeks later. Luckily this was resolved quite quickly and we got taken to our suite in Villa 2. Best to describe the suite as large but old and decrepit. You have an entire kitchen at your disposal with zero utensils, plates, cups, glasses. An IKEA kitchen has more set-up than these kitchens unfortunately. We ended up changing rooms the next day as several things were broken/missing. First room had a missing hairdryer and when asked guest services to get one to the room - it never turned up. The irons here have retractable cords and over the course of 11 nights we had to have them replaced 3 times as the cords were either broken or broke meaning you couldn't plug them in without the cord retracting and ripping out of the plug socket. The 2nd room (in Villa 3) we changed to had some of the worst sinks and shower that I've ever seen, I'd genuinely expect to see them in something like a 1* hostel. There were gurgling sounds coming from the drain that started on day 7 and even after 2 visits to guest services it was never resolved. I resorted to placing a hand towel over the shower drain to dampen the sound through the night when you're trying to sleep. Suffering jet lag the next morning we waited until the buffet 'Flavors' was open and went for breakfast at 7am. The selection was poor, majority of things weren't labelled so you had no idea what you were portioning up, the food was cold and pretty flavourless ironically. The restaurant itself was depressing, the decor was tired and flat, here also started the running joke of every single table in each restaurant requiring a wedge underneath to stop it wobbling. Remember it's 7am at this point, so what music choice is currently blasting over the speakers? Dance music.. At 7am. In a family buffet restaurant. Can honestly say avoid this restaurant at all costs, whatever time of day. This may be the first time I've come home and lost weight. It wasn't until day 3 that we discovered you can get a much better experience at La Brasserie for breakfast from 8am, food is labelled and actually the correct temperature with excellent ambiance. If you do go to The Fives, please go here for breakfast. In terms of eating, all of the A La Carte restaurants had excellent food, you can't really go wrong with choosing any of them to eat in. You can do your reservations 3 days in advance and time slots fill up quickly. The main pool didn't seem to have any consistency when it came to reserving/not reserving beds, the rules seemed to change on a daily basis and there was not enough beds to go around, there was always people there too late and had to go elsewhere, too late is around 9:30am. Music starts early at the pool bar which doesn't open until 10am and.. You guessed it. Dance music. Music so loud you struggled to have a conversation with people sat next to you. At one point it became so obnoxiously loud that I had to speak to guest services and staff to get it turned down, I'm not even going to put it down to getting old as we spoke to several other couples and families who said the exact same things to us. This isnt Cancun, the vast majority of people weren't there to party but this resorts music choice is that of a clubbing holiday. This music style transferred across to restaurants and god help you if you were eating outside at Sea Olive for lunch as you got bombarded by their music and from your other side you were getting hit by the pool bars music. Also at the lizards restaurant, again dance music but what we found bizarre was the restaurant shut at 5pm and we walked past at 9pm to an empty shut down open-air restaurant blasting out the same music even though no-one had been around for hours, this was right near people's apartments. I've always said that the best background music and ambiance is one that you don't even notice because it blends in so well. The Fives does not have this. You're incredibly drawn out of your surroundings by the volume and music choice. In fairness to the resort in the last 4 days or so of our stay the pool bar did turn the music right down so you only really heard it when you were at the bar or the swim-up seats at the bar. The resort itself is beautiful, watching the sunrise come up over the ocean down by the beach each day, surrounded by jungle and a cenote, you've got coatis and spider monkeys hanging around which are beautiful to see. The sea and beach can be walked directly onto from the resort although it's technically a public beach so expect plenty of people to rock up into what seems like the resort area. The staff are wonderful, they're the saving grace of this resort who all did an excellent job. They suffered with my terrible Spanish and their English was perfect, very rarely a lost in translation moment. The bars are relatively slim pickings, you have the main pool bar, the entertainment pool bar, gin bar and Cantina 1910. The thing that's sorely missing from ALL of them is any hint of a drinks menu, of course they have a wine list as that's where you're up-sold on bottles. But having no cocktail menu or drink suggestions inevitably left me stumped with no inspiration of what to drink, I ended up resorting to asking other people what they were drinking to get suggestions. Be prepared to be asked about getting a massage several times a day from the spa staff, I get that it's their job but repeatedly saying no thank-you gets tiresome when you've come to relax. Overall, I don't think this resort knows who they're trying to cater to. This leaves the resort without any real identity and for the money spent, we were disappointed. I know this may come across as a harsh review but it's all a genuine experience. Coming from the UK and spending the better part of £2,000pp in January has been a huge mistake. This is not a 5* hotel or resort. The only positives are the staff (Namely Rodolpho in La Brasserie), the al a carte restaurant food and the surroundings. I genuinely couldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

Great resort with numerous pools and nice rooms with confortable beds. The initial glass door of my toilet cubicle though must have been previously broken because it had been replaced temporarily by a shower curtain. Some residences on the site are undergoing renovations. Water bottles are provided generously in each room. A nice sandy beach, but quite a few stones to watch for as you enter the ocean for a swim. All in all, we had good experiences with the staff, wether in restaurants or at the beach. My favorite restaurant by far was the MESTIZO where Edgar german would always greet us with the broadest smile and have us try the many delicacies of mexican cuisine. In other restaurants though, the food quality was not always constant. As for the house wines, there were closer to vinegar ! At the beach, we could either go to the SEA OLIVE restautant for lunch or get some hamburgers or sandwiches, or else enjoy a freshly baked pizza at a pizza stand where the barrista Armando Chable charmed us with his great personality and his cocktail preparation knowledge. But most of all, we were greatly impressed by his language skills. His franch as well as his english were excellent ! A hard-working , brilliant young man with great potential , who could be more useful to this hotel at a higher function. I'd like also to mention Josè Panti at the beach, who went the extra mile numerous times to accommodate our needs, especially when my grandson ( 6 ) was sick. A major downside though, in this pandemic context, is that the measures concerning mask-wearingwere not always re-inforced. At some point, there were so many hotel guests on the beach and around the main pool that it became overcrowded making anti-covid safety measures and distanciation impossible to follow.
