Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favorite
Overall the Ocean Riviera Paradise experience with my wife and 5 y/o child was a memorable one and we will look back on it with mostly fond memories but we want to share how it really was for folks who are considering visiting. Also, we're going to give it 3.5 stars for the sake of this review and are rounding it up to 4 because we can't rate with half stars on Trip Advisor.
Allow us to explain why it was 3.5 stars...
The intro to the hotel, upon arrival, was a farce. We were basically given an intro by a dude who purely wanted to up-sell us on our holiday and was trying to upgrade us to Privilege-tier guests instead of the standard all inclusive we'd already paid good money for. This felt very distasteful after such a long air & land journey to arrive in PDC, from North California and he missed various important facts about the hotel, seemingly because he wanted the commission for an up-sell. All things considered, this was a terrible start to our hotel experience and it left a bad taste in our mouths throughout the stay. All this being said - we'd advise ANYone against the Privilege intro tour that these guys try to pitch you in the first few days. (We were also advised through hearsay that these take way longer than the allotted 1.5 hours)
General tours/amenity harassment (incl. spa and water sport deals) between the lobby and the beach pool were also draining. Of course, we get that people are always gonna try and sell you extra tours while on your hols. but it was pretty relentless, even on the hotel grounds! To the point at which, every time we entered the lobby we feared we'd receive another sales pitch, because of the aforementioned intro. Not to mention that the beach peddlers also became a bit of a nuisance (with the hotel seemingly doing little to deter them from hanging inside the boundaries of the hotel's borders and around the beach pool).
The laundry service at the hotel was an absolute scam. I'm sorry, but being charged per item, for what was effectively only two normal-sized loads of washing for our little family, ended up being offered to us at $140 USD, no less!!! Fortunately, we managed to find a laundromat about 1-mile up the road (by a restaurant called Funky Monkey + a 711) that offered a load of/4Kg washing for less than $5 USD - which we were able to conveniently pick up the next day ~ well worth it.
There was no beach, don't let the pics of the hotel beach fool you. While the beach pool itself was splendid, the hotel beach is now non-existent with giant sandbags taking up the space instead and tons of washed up sea weed, making the sea a murky green. As such the cordoned-off area that is ORP's safe swimming area was definitely not the beach experience we were expecting from the pics available on Google, so we felt hugely misinformed on this aspect of the hotel. We do however recommend taking a catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres for that true Caribbean Sea vibe. Note: Peak times for algae/washed-up seaweed is May to October in this part of Mexico, but for whatever reason this didn't impact Isla Mujeres, which was truly beautiful.
The monkey sanctuary was exceedingly disappointing. It's basically only a 10-meter-long viewing platform and there was lots of litter on the jungle floor. Also at the time we visited, there were 0 monkeys to be seen and we were surprised that despite the seemingly hard work that the groundsmen put in, towards the upkeep of the beautiful hotel grounds, in general, there was little to no effort made to make this an actual sanctuary. Of course, from our initial intro, the monkey sanctuary was made out to be a thing of beauty - instead, it was quite frankly a depressing site and an example of human carelessness and litter pollution :(
Moving on, I was due a FedEx delivery for some medication, which became rather urgent during my stay. However, instead of guest services keeping on top of the delivery I had to proactively ask them on 2 separate occasions to actually collect it from security. It felt like a ball was definitely dropped in this scenario and there was seemingly no sense of urgency/inquiry as to why it had been delivered to security but was not passed onto us. I then proceeded to have to wait over 24 hours to pick it up from guest services after demanding for it to be found. (I also notified the front desk of the package's arrival at least 48 hours prior to its scheduled delivery too, to no avail)
The volume/music levels for the majority of evening shows, particularly the fire show outside in the main plaza + the Disney show in the theatre were dangerously high - especially for children.
The room desk/drawer unit was broken. The drawers for this unit were totally dysfunctional in the camp bed part of our junior-style room. (Where we stored our child's toys, etc.) For a 5* hotel one would expect these things to be checked pro-actively by maintenance prior to arrival + despite there being a whole team of folks who took care of the room's facilities, this was overlooked. (In hindsight we should have reported this to reception + changed rooms or indeed drawer units, because this was unacceptable and somewhat dangerous for child's fingers)
Airport transfers ~ we were surprised the hotel didn't offer this proactively or even provide info. about recommendations on how to go about this. Instead, the airport transfer felt like a wild goose chase! After our trip, we discovered it was definitely better to get a taxi (for approximately $1,000 MXN at the time of writing, if your travel provider does not provision it, so why not suggest that ORP?). Alternatively, the on-site TraficTours tourist agency also offers transfers at a similar cost, but again these are not offered proactively anywhere by the hotel, which is disappointing.
AC in the main restaurant buildings left a lot to be desired. These rooms were seemingly too large to have efficient air-con., something we'd hope would be much improved if we were ever to return.
Paddle boarding - while the chap who ran this was great, this session definitely needs improving. There were no signs to suggest where to sign up and who was on the waiting list and at the time of writing there were only 3 paddle boards on offer, for the entire hotel! In the end we only had 20 minutes because we had to pass on the paddle boards to the next set of folks who wanted to do it, which definitely wasn't enough time to enjoy the ride.
-------------
All things considered, our stay certainly wasn't all bad and overall, like we stated at the beginning of this review, we did enjoy our stay at ORP, so it's important we also mention the pro's here too...
Room cleanliness & spaciousness was first-rate and lived up to its 5* rating. (With thanks to the maids and water re-fillers too, who made our room welcoming & spotless on a daily basis). The bathroom was also fantastic with a separate shower and toilet room + dual wash basins; a well thought out design for a little family to use all at once :)
Daisy/Kids Club - The ladies that ran this on a daily basis were outstanding and indeed lived up to the 5* experience one would expect of a hotel like this. We were so grateful to drop off our 5 y/o at kids club every day and were so impressed with how they gracefully embraced the kids who attended. Not to mention their work rate morning, afternoon and night for the general entertainment, on site! Our child also looked forward to going back to Daisy Club every day, while we were there ~ A clear sign that things were working really well <3
Aside from the excessive volume, the theatre shows were outstanding. Including, not least, the Disney show, where all the children even got to meet and be photographed with every character on stage! The shows were always compelling and again, definitely lived up to the 5* experience. We also want to give a special shout-out to the Shining Paradise crew who put on a show every Thursday evening, while we were there and truly went above and beyond with their performance, which was thoroughly entertaining, as were their musical accompaniment choices!
Air-conditioning in both our room (in extension of the ceiling fan) and indeed the lobby was always a welcomed treat, to return to. We just wish it could've been this way in the larger restaurant areas too :(
The scent of the lobby was always inviting & welcoming! I don't know what magic concoction they were using but sales folks aside, we always looked forward to walking through the lobby just for the smell of it, LoL.
Parking at the hotel was free! Thank goodness. Also, it is well worth renting a car while you're there to explore Playa Del Carmen's restaurants (we recommend Ictio & Carboncitos restaurants in downtown PDC). Also don't forget to check out the Cenotes and Mayan temples if you're feeling adventurous. Just make sure you shop around for rentals (outside of the hotel too, to compare rates Vs. convenience of hotel bookings!)
Taxis to and from these places are also relatively cheap as an alternative from time to time instead of renting a car and can be booked from the hotel/front desk ~ so long as you level-set with the drivers beforehand about the journey cost Vs. what the hotel's/locals expected rates are. Note: Above all, please don't let the taxi drivers get the better of you as a tourist, as they often can and will; especially if you don' speak the language!
----------
Finally, here's some constructive feedback/suggested improvements on how we think the hotel can improve as a whole and live up to its 5* reputation...
Add a hotel / beach pier or at least a jetty (if possible). This would be amazing for numerous reasons incl. better access to the actual turquoise sea + skipping the rocks. It would also make the beach a lot more appealing than it is now, in its current state :( Not to mention to help overcome the algae/seaweed issues for the poor staff who have to work hard clearing it all up, every-single-day. Note: A short walk away to the South of the hotel (< 1 KM), along the beach is something just like this setup with a pier and indeed a protected beach. Something which ORP seemingly do little about, when it comes to protecting their own beach unfortunately.
Improving the up selling / returning visitor / Privilege tier debacle. Please don't take advantage of brand new guests, as you did with us. This definitely marred our initial ORP settling in period and could be conducted so much better - even if it was a day or two into the holiday, out of respect, after folks have had a long journey. We might have considered things differently if this had been conducted in a more decent/professional manner, sometime into our holiday. The key take away for us was that instead of giving folks all the important information about the hotel, it felt like we were just another entity to sell to, which was disgraceful.
The standard WiFi, wasn't happening. For a 5* hotel surely it isn't too much to ask to have an optimal wireless mesh experience to sufficiently serve the hotel guests!? Even a cell phone tower that serves the guests outside of the WiFi would be nice but at the Daisy Rooms the WiFi was genuinely awful. (Not to mention that we would definitely have been willing to pay for a secure network/improved Internet experience!)
Drinks - they were just far too sweet. We definitely don't want to demean the overall service experience because the service staff in general were fantastic, but we would definitely have been willing to pay for some premium drinks at the pool bars and add the cost to our room from time to time; incl. better choice wine options and craft beer options too, of course!

Beautiful and clean resort with lots to do. Huge kids water park, bowling alley, foam pool parties for the adults, and numerous other activities and multiple pools will keep things interesting. Our room was spectacular (Privilege building) with two full baths, two deck areas, king bed etc. There is no shortage of hot water, linens, staff and this large resort was always polishing, or doing upkeep (quietly) to ensure everything was in top shape.
The buffet was excellent! Amazing sauces, flavours and variety of foods in abundance. You really don’t need anything else. The a la carts were another story. The steakhouse had thin, grisly steak and calamari so heavily battered it was unrecognizable. The Italian restaurant didn’t even use Italian seasonings and the risotto wasn’t arboreal rice. The Mexican restaurant had seviche on the menu but what came out was not - at all! I couldn’t even cut through my duck mole! The Blue Moon however was fabulous and we would highly recommend it.
The gym was well equipped with friendly and helpful staff and Mike’s Coffee was quite good. Jewelry shop was overpriced and small clothing store offered nothing elegant or dressy, just hats, t-shirts, coverups, etc.
We came for a wedding. Food, location and staff were great but the wedding couple found there were many ‘add ons’ that made the wedding quite expensive for them. It’s not the deal you think you’re getting.

We arrived home today after spending two weeks at the ocean paradise. We was there for both xmas and new year.
My first impression of the hotel was good. Got off the coach, the bell boys took our bags and we was all checked in and handed keys with in 20 min of arrival (we was a party of 14 spreed over 5 rooms).
The room we had was nice, although we had a 4 poster bed and the 2 boys had to share a pull out sofa. Both a shower and wirlpool bath in our room. It had a mini bar that was stocked every day, plus tv, iron, safe. If i wanted to be critical about the room, it looks like a 5 year old done the grouting in the bathroom. The maids done a good job every day and were very polite.
There are many restaurants to choose to eat in. Although the experience was not always the greatest. We went to the stake restaurant one night and did not return. There was many tables made up ready for people to sit down yet due to the lack of staff we waited nearly 40 min to be seated. Then waited another 35min before any one came to serve us. The food when it did eventually arrived was for me just average. We went to the Mexican twice, the second time having the same experience as the stake house. The Italian restaurant on the other hand was amazing, food cooked perfectly and the staff couldnt do enough for you. Route 66 is an American restaurant, couldnt thought the food or service in there. Same with the buffet, always something that took my fancy and the staff made sure you was happy. Sakura, the Japanese restaurant was amazing, its just a shame you have to que up in the day to book in and it is very limited space, but a great meal and very entertaining.
There are lots of pools to swim in, a few days they were very cold and no one was in them. If you was looking into upgrading to a swim up room, dont. You will be wasting your money, just book a normal room. The beach area was very small for the size of the hotel and there are some rocks as you walk into the sea but it is still a beautiful view and the sea was incredibly warm when the pools were to cold.
When not swimming there is plenty to do. Football courts, tennis courts, baseball lane, 10 pin bowling, inside and out side gym, pool tables and of course they have kids clubs for children of all ages.
Iv had a great time and enjoyed my self but h10 just need to tweak a few details to make this place better.

Traveled here March 2020 during all of the corona confusion. We were definitely not happy that the hotel was doing nothing to discourage social distancing, in fact, they were actually closing sections and corralling us into smaller sections. We also thought the use of hand sanitizer for everyone entering restaurants and specifically the buffet should have been made mandatory due to the risk of corona. However, all the corona craziness aside, the resort was nice.
We tried every restaurant and the service was great. I won’t bother to get into each one as everyone has different tastes but I will note my favorite was the Mexican. This isn’t just your basic Mexican menu and honestly the presentation was beautiful. My biggest complaint for all restaurants was the wine. The White House wine tasted very much like vinegar and the red made me sick both times I tried it. This may have something to do with the fact that they are always wanting you to pay extra for wine from the wine list. Paying for wine at an all inclusive is something I just won’t do. The buffet food was good but we found it didn’t change much and we grew tired of it very quickly.
We stayed in an Eden suite facing the pool. The rooms were cleaned very well each day and were tastefully decorated although the quality of the finishing is not very impressive. We had a few issues within the room and someone came right away and fixed them up. The pillows were terrible.
The beach area was beautiful and you can walk for miles. The only thing we didn’t like were the large rocks in the water. Take it slow and feel your way in and you will be fine.
We saw maps and photos so we knew what the set up would be like but the reason we ended up not liking it is because you never got to see the ocean. The resort is basically a long skinny area that funnels onto a beach area that you can’t see from anywhere but ... the beach. It is also extra hot and stuffy since you don’t get the wind coming in from the ocean. What we really didn’t like and the reason we will not be returning or recommending is the check in. As soon as we arrived they tried to get us into the sales room. My suitcase was literally pulled from my hand and taken away from me. They told us lie after lie to try and get us to listen to their sales pitch. I was actually pushed towards the door. Who, in their right mind, would think anyone would buy their block of rooms (or whatever) after that? Almost everyday someone tried to stop our holiday and try to sell us their time share. No means no.

Let’s have in mind that we are currently living the COVID-19 pandemic and we spent our holiday during yellow alert (medium). Having said that, here’s what you wanna know.
Check in, incredibly slow, the lobby way too crowded and even though there were four receptionists it took us almost an hour to get through it (and we only had 4 families in front of us).
Bar, the open bar is has almost every beverage you can imagine but don’t expect a medium quality tequila or scotch, on the other hand you can have kinda nice vodka, rum, gin, wine and some other spirits. A premium bracelet is available if you are a picky drinker. There were a total of four bars available during our stay, bartenders were cool and most of them fast, long lines from time to time, but nothing crazy.
Pools and gardens, there were only two pools available (a hurricane stroke three days before our arrival and the other pools were in maintenance). The adult pool not too crowded, chairs and umbrellas for everyone respecting at least 5 feet between each other.
Restaurants, unfortunately for breakfast there was only one place and it was pretty crowded most of the morning, the food quality was actually pretty good for an all inclusive. The other restaurant at the beach had the best buffet from my point of view, fish, seafood, soups and salads, while the other one was kinda weird american flavoured mexican style food. There’s a teppanyaki place called Sakura which I highly recommend, amazing show and food, you’ll need to wake up early and use de hotel app so you can book your table!
Room, unbelievable, one of the best rooms I’ve ever had in the Riviera Maya for this price, the bed felt like clouds, great living room area with a sofa and chairs, nice balcony also with lounge chairs and pool view; the bathroom wow, two sinks, the shower and toilet are separate and the bathtub is really big and you can open a curtain if you want to watch TV or stay in conversation with your partner or friends in the living room.
Spa, amazing, lots of different treatments, massages and relaxation programmes, and not expensive for a resort spa (you can find cheaper massages in the beach, but they’re not as good).
In general, really great hotel, good food, good drinks, super friendly staff, near 5th Avenue and only an hour away from Cancun. I highly recommend it and I’ll totally return here with friends or family!!!

3 of my friends and I just returned from Ocean Riviera Paradise. We had a lovely time. We were there for 3 nights, so just a quick get away. We did not have any luggage, we all brought backpacks, but if you have luggage and it’s before check in, you’ll drop your bag. Check in was easy, although our room wasn’t ready (it was 1pm, check in is at 3.) We went and grabbed lunch and went back at 3, where we had to wait in line for a few minutes and then it took them 15 minutes to confirm our rooms were in fact ready. At check in you are given “towel cards” and they charge $100 USD per card if not returned at check out. This caused some anxiety... we went to the ElBaso pool (adult only) and turned in our $400 worth of towel cards for 4 towels (1 per person). At around 5:30 the towel building at this pool closed so we kept our towels. We didn’t get new towels during our stay because the timing was never right. On our final day we had to cut our pool time short because we needed to turn our towels in to get the cards back so we had them at check out. You HAVE to return to the same place you initially got the towels because they gave your name and room # in a book. This is probably my biggest complaint. Other little things: the room did smell a little musty, but it’s Mexico and it wasn’t terrible, we didn’t have hot water one night and one morning we stayed in Daisy, the food was cold at the “romantic restaurant. The staff at the resort was great and very friendly. Vanessa, our server at the beach pool was amazing! Our meals and drinks were good. The cleaning crew did a great job. The beach was great, a few rocky spots in the ocean, but didn’t deter us. The resort is BIG but well laid out. There are carts that run but we only used them a few times, felt good to walk and work off some of the food and drink. I would absolutely return.

I'd suggest waiting until this resort is up to capacity (after Covid) as they are extremely short staffed right now. The resort is beautiful but the employees, although very nice, cannot handle the load put upon them. Pros: As stated, the property itself is very pretty, clean and well kept, and the rooms are nice. There are several pools (most with swim-up bars) and plenty of lounge chairs. There are multiple restaurants to choose from...a buffet, an american restaurant, an italian restaurant, a japanese restaurant, a mexican restaurant, a steak house, etc. The food was just OK - nothing special. The buffet was surprisingly good. They have a shuttle/tram on the property which was nice because it's a big resort. Cons: Again, keeping in mind it is Covid right now and the employees are stretched thin. Our phone in the room didn't work after the first day and even when it worked, our phone was rarely answered by room service OR the front desk. We stayed for 5 nights and our room service person only visited once and pretty much just made the bed and tossed some fresh towels in the bathroom. We had to almost beg for bottled water (which they don't have anywhere onsite other than in your refrigerator in your room...you can only get cups of water at the bars/restaurants). People's dirty dishes were left unattended outside of their rooms for days at a time which attracted the local animal scavengers and made a HUGE mess in the outside hallways. Special note: make sure to return your room key to avoid an extra charge and keep track of your pool towels. At the time of this review they offered a late check-out for $10/hour which was nice if you had a later flight. Pros & cons / Covid aside, I would recommend waiting to book this property as I believe it's much nicer with a full staff.

First time at Ocean Riviera Paradise and was pleasantly surprised. Everything was "as advertised", having heavily researched prior I knew what was expected and it all lived up to expectations. We were located in the Eden section facing the pool. Room 4310, third floor. Great location. Room was spacious and beds comfortable. My only issue was the bedding. There was only a very thin blanket on the bed. No bed covering/duvet, etc. I had to resort to using a bath towel to get a bit of warmth. AC was quite strong, even at it's lowest. Other than that everything was great. Bathroom with 2 sinks (great idea for travellers!)
Restaurants were very good, plentiful and good variety. Staff was very concerned with making sure we had no allergies or intolerances.
The pools are beautiful, however a bit cool. Eden pool was the liveliest. With lots of activities. My only negative on that would be I wish at the beach pool they would have streamed music for the day. It was spotty, only started at noon for about 1/2 hr then nothing for many hours. Didn't get that.
Great entertainment, we were there during Superbowl and they had a big party with bleachers and a tailgate buffet. As well as Oscar night they had another event with a gala dinner. There were also adult parties throughout the week, hookah party, jazz night, etc.
I would highly recommend this resort for families with children and couples.

This hotel and its parent company, H10, engage in deceptive practices and discrimination towards disabled people. Their game works like this: Reserve a room as I did, a couple of months in advance, requesting an accessible room. Try to follow up by phone - their answering system is a loop. Sent note through Orbitz to remind them. Arrive at hotel to be told accessible room requests are just that, requests that they have no obligation to fulfill. This is not like requesting a room with a view of the pool. A functional bathroom is a basic requirement of a hotel room. The hotel knew when the reservation was made if the disabled accessible room was available. All they had to do was notify me. When we got there, they told us they only had one accessible room and it was occupied. Their employee alternatively told me he was the "Hotel Manager" and the "Reservation Manager" when I asked to speak to the hotel manager. They refuse to let me speak to the person in charge. He mocked and ridiculed me in front of a lobby full of people. Their solution was to rent what I needed from a third-party rental equipment company at my own expense which I eventually had to do. This ruined an expensive, prepaid vacation and I am considering legal action. I expect Orbitz to discontinue their relationship with such an unethical company.

My friend and I spent 7 days in a Privilege Suite at Ocean Riviera Paradise and enjoyed all the perks – like discounts at the spa, access to the Privilege restaurant and ease of making a la carte reservations. The resort is well maintained, clean, well lit and has a nice ambiance. All the staff are very friendly, everything is within a short walking distance and evening strolls felt very safe.
This resort from an aesthetic perspective is beautiful and only a few years old. For an all-inclusive we were very impressed with the quality of the food and the fact that all the water that was served was bottled. We dined at Blue Moon, the Privilege Restaurant, La Locanda, Pez Vela, Sakura and the main buffet, which were all really wonderful! The only one we didn’t care for was the Mexican restaurant Villa Marina. I’d say the food was an 8.5-9/10.
The entertainment team was wonderful and energetic, especially Kevin! We hung out on the beautiful beach a couple times and at the adults only El Beso pool. The drinks were just what you would expect, flavourful and delicious! My favourite was the Mango Margarita.
We partook in a wine tasting gathering with the amazing Edgar, which was fun and enjoyed seeing the Mexican raccoons and monkeys in the animal lookout area. The resort had lots to do every day and evening like bowling, eating ice cream from the ice cream parlour, watching live theatre, dancing at the disco (which was pretty good), and listening to live music. Other special events included a popup Mexican market, a foam party and a beach party. We took advantage of it all!

Some, but not all. Depends whether you are Privilege or not.
There is a lot of food options, most are labelled, at the buffet, and are in different international sections with separate proteins, starches and vegetables, so you can pick what you like, which makes it easier for celiacs, but if you are not sure, then I would go with the obvious choices. They make corn tortillas and homemade chips, so those would be gluten free if you make your own tacos. The serving staff are pretty knowledgeable in the al a carte restaurants, so you could always order something without the sauce. Every restaurant also asks you, at the hostess stand, if you have any allergies.
