Each of Mansion Merida's fourteen newly restored and redecorated guest suites are different in configuration and decor. Yet they all feature Merida-style extremely high ceilings (ranging in height from 22 feet to 16.5 feet), and smooth, colorful floors of crafted geometric-design tiles, an art form unique to Yucatan. This architectural land decor combination provides an airy and cooling effect. The handcrafted meticulously restored mahogany double-door windows feature soundproof outer glass. They open to wrought-iron balconies overlooking Parque Hidalgo or the adjacent 17th-century (1618) Iglesia del Jesus.

I debated on whether to post this review of an admirably preserved establishment that plainly employs a number of fine people. In the end, I decided to make this post because I wish I had seen a review that looked past the lovely lobby and pleasant service workers and evaluated it as an actual luxury hotel - which it bills itself to be. This was easily the most disappointing of the four hotels I stayed in on my last trip. I was excited to stay here based on TripAdvisor reviews and accompanying photos. But I was also curious why this hotel seemed to be absent from recent “best of Mérida” lists I had seen. Now I know why. If you’re expecting a true five-star experience at this hotel, don’t. To be honest, this hotel has a phenomenal location. It is also a beautiful old edifice. Every single employee I interacted with was lovely. And, I have no doubt that this building was lovingly renovated a decade or two ago. Unfortunately, my room looked and felt like it had been at least 15 years since it received any serious attention. While the common spaces are gorgeous, my “King Suite” had peeling paint (see picture), extremely rusted fixtures (see picture), and – to my great distress - a lot of mosquitoes (see picture). I woke up to blood spots on my previously white sheets, obviously created when I rolled over onto the mosquitoes. On my last night, I layed in my bed and watched and waited with curiosity. Four mosquitoes arose upon me and I “caught” them. Not an experience one would expect in a “five-star” city hotel. I had spent several days traveling to and staying at rural hacienda hotels in the Yucatán, and had managed to entirely avoid mosquito bites — only to be bitten in my bed at this hotel. I normally would not be that annoyed with mosquito bites, but the serious dengue fever outbreak in the Yucatan makes me think twice. It’s almost comical that I slathered on insect repellent during the rest of my trip only to be bitten —in bed— in a supposedly top-of-the-market urban hotel on the last few nights. If I come down with dengue, I will know precisely when and where I got it. I also feel compelled to stress that my room was a big disappointment. While the hotel’s public areas are beautiful, I thought my room was both fusty and musty. Even the multiple Glade plug-ins (I’m not joking) didn’t compensate. The bathroom was, in a word, gross. I’ve attached some pictures. Imagine paying hundreds of dollars a night to be greeted by that blue-bowled, moldy-rimmed, rusted-out toilet. 🤮 It looks like something from a truck stop. Finally, In my experience, the hotel has two eating options. Breakfast in the courtyard, which is acceptable from a food quality standpoint and lovely from a setting standpoint. The other option is service in the bar/park-facing-patio. As near as I could tell, the “Monet” restaurant is not open, although I expect all food, at every venue, comes from the same kitchen on the ground floor. Any diminishment in hotel eating options was offset by the hotel’s location in proximity to a lot of good spots. In conclusion, and while I am loathe to say this because I’m a huge fan of historic hotels, I wish I had stayed in a newer build (or a newer renovation). One simply shouldn’t suffer mosquito bites in a “luxury” hotel room (at least if they do not offer and encourage use of a net around the bed). And any decent hotel room’s “modern” bathroom fixtures should likewise not be so plainly decrepit. I would venture to guess that neither Bulgari nor Molton Brown would be too pleased to see their toiletries marketed with the odious bathroom I experienced. First-world prices should get you first-world amenities, particularly in Mexico — which has countless amazing hotels. For the market, this one is priced like a Four Seasons in Mexico City, but gives a “*best* hotel in Caracas or Havana” vibe. And that’s a real shame.

Everything about Hotel Mansion Merida was stellar, from their attention to our room request, to the welcome drinks, to their assistance with our departure travel, just to name a few among a multitude of special gestures. This is a beautiful boutique hotel with exquisite service and delicious food. There would be no need to leave the hotel- except to see the sites and try some other good restaurants which are in walking distance. There are many fine touches here such as cookies at night and boxed lunches for early departures. We will be returning to this treasure! Thank you Raul and staff.

This was the nicest hotel my wife and I have stayed in and we have stayed in many. The service was outstanding. Our room was beautiful. We loved the high ceilings. The entire staff was very professional and warm. Everything is done to make guests comfortable. Staying at Mansion Merida is like staying in a museum. The breakfasts were great as were the dinners at the Restaurante. We cannot recommend highly enough! ¡Muchas gracias Raúl y todo el personal!

We had the most amazing time at this hotel. The room was fabulous and service was excellent. The breakast was lovely and the omelettes were bets i have ever tasted. The location is perfect with a lovely square to the front and easy to walk around the town. We will be returning as need to explore more of Merida and eat some more fabulous omelettes. Great bar with outdoor seating with views over square. The hotel has been restored beautifully and is so relaxing.

Photos can’t capture the grandeur of this place. Just stunning from top to bottom. As mentioned by other reviewers, the host/owner is very gracious. Raul makes it a point to personally welcome guests as they gather for the complimentary breakfast. The staff is also very polite, assuring everything is alright and all needs are being met. The breakfast menu offers a wide selection to choose from and is served in an open-air courtyard that in contrast is an intimate setting. The hotel, like all of Centro, is rich in history that dates back to the 1600’s – research it. Having been beautifully renovated, there isn’t a bad spot in the place. Being very upscale in every way, it has to be seen and experienced. Hope to return soon.

If you are looking for a home away from home stay at Mansión Merida. It is an architectural marvel with a fantastic location. Our junior suite is a marvel in opulence. Dining is fantastic. Make sure to spend time at The Bistro. Ivan and staff are exceptional. Arranging private airport transfers, tours to Chichén Itzá, Valladolid and tracking down loss baggage. No where else have we received complementary coffee for an early morning flight. Accolades for their personalized service. The highlight of our stay was meeting the owner, Sr. Raúl Casares. The most gracious and charming man in all of Mexico. Mansion Merida far exceeded my wildest dreams. We cannot wait to return! Linda Schrader

We stayed five nights here and loved it. The hotel is a great location on a small square that is extremely walkable. The included breakfast was very good. The staff were extremely helpful and gracious. We were able to do a day trip to Uxmal and a beautiful cenote. Consider this if you have time. Hotel will help you book. The hotel itself was beautiful and the rooms were quite large.

World class service doesn’t even begin to describe the treatment at Mansión Merida. My husband and I recently spent our anniversary at The Mansion. Ivan made us feel like royalty from the moment we stepped in the door. It was the highlight of our trip. They truly went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was unforgettable. All the staff was kind and courteous, going out of their way to make sure everything was perfect for us. It truly is an oasis and a palace in the heart of Centro Merida. Thank you Ivan!!!!
