Casa del Balam is a nice hotel walking distance from all the great things going on around the square and neighborhoods where nightly activities occur. The staff are very friendly and helpful--we can't recommend them enough. The rooms are comfortable, but perhaps not 5 star; and don't plan to watch a lot of English tv. Its location and staff make... This was my 2nd visit to Merida and 1st time staying at casa del balam. On my last visit I stayed at another local hotel just up the street. I was not thrilled with the room quality. This time around I was very pleased. The rooms are decorated exactly how a boutique hotel in Merida should be. We stayed on... More

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great location for wandering around Merida. Very welcoming staff. We arrived at 2am and was no problem checking in and getting straight into our room. Which was lovely. While being a very old hotel it is in excellent condition and very clean. Our room was the cheapest and still very spacious. We had 2 double beds... More

We spend one night here since we have an early flight . I choose this hotel because it was close to the center of Merida. The staff it was welcoming and helpful. We have a short tour of Merida , a swim in the pool and a walk to S.Lucia where we have a great dinner. Nice hotel in a... More

I have stayed in two different rooms at Casa del Balam because the first room I was given was awful. I had initially booked the most expensive room (Master suite) and that was a big mistake. These rooms are in the oldest part of the building, they may have charm but no noise insulation, very dark and humid. Also no... More

Great location in Old Merida, near the town square. It's a renovated historic building, with all the style and "cool factor" that goes along with it. Don't expect brand-new and perfect everything and you will not be disappointed. Great value for the money, friendly staff, parking, and a pool. Highly recommended.

A good hotel, with a nice English Breakfast, and an OK restaurant/bar with a rather uninspired menu. The food was OK but the room showed some wear. The Central location is excellent with many surrounding restaurants offering more quality. Finding the parking lot is a challenge, I suggest that you stop outside and ask.

This is a hotel that has great potential, but it seems to be waiting for something. Great location in the middle Merida's vibrant downtown, yet the property is in urgent need for improvements in particular to its rooms. Traditional decoration doesn't imply shabby elevators, ill equipped bathrooms and noisy windows and doors. Nice pool area, and restaurant.

We love this hotel! The courtyard with the pool is very tranquil and you feel like you are hidden away in a private garden and can't hear all the street noise. This hotel has free parking and Wi-Fi. We stayed in room 112 right above the swimming pool with a huge balcony with a carved table and chairs. The room... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
