Mexicos oldest hostel that still ranks among the countries best. Built in the 1950s it is located on Isla Mujeres, a small Caribbean (7km long) island and is 20min from Cancun by boat. This hostel boasts a restaurant and bar that is open until 11pm, after which the real fun begins at the beach bar until 2.45am. Pocna has access to beach volleyball, games room, movies on demand and bikes for rent. We are close to North Beach, which is Isla Mujeres most beautiful beach and Pocna itself is situated right on its own beach that is perfect for relaxing and taking the sun. This exciting hostel offers free activities such as Yoga everymorning, Spanish classes, juggling and what ever happens to be being taught by one of the many talented people that pass through. If you have the talent and the time of at least one month, you can teach an activity and have your cost of your stay covered.Winter time brings on private parties inside the hostel and also bonfire nights with live music and jamming after. Everynight in there is live music in Pocna and the year also brings many high profile bands to play within the walls of Pocna. Those to date include Los Authentico Decadentes, Los Aguas Aguas, No Te Va a Gustar and La Renga with many more in the future plans. An amazing fun and social hostel. On the backpackers trail and full of international guests. A must to come and visit in Mexico.

Very social hostel; it is a party hostel, but the loud music moves onto the beach during the night so it’s not too difficult to sleep. Beach bar is really cool. Large lockers in rooms, but one or two of the lockers in my room had broken. I advise a room with AC (I didn’t and it was horrible and sticky). My room was upstairs and there were only 2 toilet/showers, so I had to go downstairs most times (which was a little annoying) but there were lots downstairs and always clean. WiFi was decent. Beach location is great; the town is small so it’s still not far from anything. BBQ is delicious. Breakfast is basic but decent. (There’s dulce de leche 😉) Theres always a hammock shortage during the day, so a few more would be nice.

We rent a private room with shared bathroom for two nights. Bad points: - The place is not really clean with dirty sheets. - The bathroom is very small and you wash yourself above the toilet! Only one towel for two persons... - The wifi is not accessible from the rooms or from the beach bar. - Every night from 9.30pm until 3am it's very very very noisy because of the live music then the beach bar with DJ music. It's even not possible to watch a movie quietly in your room from 9.30pm... - There's no mosquito net on the windows so during the night you are bitten if you let the window open to get some air... - The staff is neither friendly or useful. - They said there's a magic show at 8.30pm but nothing in reality. - The beach bar opens at 11pm. - You are on the beach but you can't swim in this one due to strong currents. Good points : - one of the cheapest hotel in the island - very good location to go on Playa Norte and the downtown - live music every night from 9.30 to 11pm, opportunity to meet people - the beach garden with a lot of hammocks is really cool to chill with a seaview and waves sounds and everyday 4.30pm its beach volley. - there's free ping-pong, pool table, foosball, lot of sofas and lot of places to chill in communal area. After the first night which was VERY noisy and uncomfortable, we asked to cancel the second night for free. They were not really understanding and they just agreed to cancel the second night with only a 50% refund. Finally, this hostel was advised in one of our guide and it was a bit disappointing.

I’m writing this review only to warn other visitors - was never really active on tripadvisor, but since this has never been done before... someone has to do the job. This is the worst place I’ve ever been to. Certainly there is a part of expectation management involved (bad), but even after benchmarking against ~55 hostels and ~40 hotels in +45 countries across the world (conservative estimate) this place has won the last place. Even against the Istanbul 1-room-4-people-10sqm-no-window-old-fan benchmark (2nd to last place, but at least clean). That brings me to my first point: Hygiene is a catastrophe. You smell the toilets (not in the fresh sense of the word) by a distance of 2 floors. The matrazes are virtually alive. Everywhere rubbish and empty beer bottles. Not to mention the armada of ants that’s everywhere where you are. It stinks. It’s ugly. You want to vomit. Maybe even more Import is the second issue: Security is a TOTAL FAILURE as well. Anyone can walk in and out any time, room doors can only be locked ‘superficially’, and thus at night strangers come to sleep at the place just like that (only in the hangmats, but still) Then, in the day and age of hyper transparency, it should be mentioned: Correctness of statements is not precise, either. For example, I booked a single room with AC (and paid for it), what I received was a room with an actually pretty broken fan. Worst night ever. Second to last point in this 0-of-5-Star rating: Customer Service is hell. After mentioning these topics and cancelling my stay after one night (in which I barely slept 2h - not even) instead of the five planned nights, I was charged the full amount - not even a discount or at least a free drink on the house. Gosh. I was then searching the web all night long and even walking to other places to find a better place. Luckily, Isla Mujeres has PLENTY of them (but at the same time even stranger, so it is not even a lack-of-competition story) Anyways, the WORST part of the whole episode was the ‘friendliness’ of the staff. I.E., take 100% friendliness, multiply it by -1, and you have Poc-Nas employees. Be it at the reception, in the kitchen, or just when hanging out with the dive school staff (!). On a normal comment / conversation opener the reaction is stroppy, disgusted and makes you feel really bad. Guys, I COME HERE FOR VACATION. I don’t know, it’s just a really strange place. Ownership will apparently change soon anyways, so that might explain some of the issues, but until then DON’T GO - and if, at least you have been warned. That’s more than I can say. P.S.: as from what I experienced so far, I’ll probably get a really disgusted answer on this post as well. Anyways, clearly worth it for the rest of the travellers who SHOULD NOT COME.

Nothing more to add then what is written in the title. I slept in a room with no ac but fans were promised. There were no fans for the upper beds, the door doesn’t close properly and there really is not room for 8 people. In my 9 month traveling this was the worst room I found my self sleeping.

This was a good hostel with a nice location right on the beach. The breakfast was not good but this was probably the only bad thing about the hostel. There is a nice bar where you can get food and there was a beach party on the night we stayed which was fun. They also had organised trips such as snorkelling and scuba diving.
